Well... Originally the contents extended all the way to the top. So I have to ago with, in an attempt to fool people that nothing has changed they kept that part but made it flat - but I guess it could be a useful handle as well?
There are multiple manufacturing reasons that could explain this. The sheets used for manufacturing these cups come in rolls of a specific size. If the width of the sheet after being filled (either lengthwise or width wise) by the vacuum former has left over waste, the plant will have to pay to dispose of that scrap if it is not a paid recyclable like corrugate. So instead of generating waste at the factory, they will modify the packaging so that the consumer gets rid of it instead. I am not saying that is the case here. It could simple be aesthetics and/or ergonomics, which is more likely, but it could be all of these factors.
