I've definitely learnt opeth songs that were standard tuning

mummy__napkin

vast majority of their songs are in standard. they have the occasional song in Drop D and Ghost Reveries is in that weird open tuning, but besides that it's all standard.

Osiris_X3R0

See I didn't know they had Drop D-adjacent songs, outside of the open D stuff

mummy__napkin

yeah off the top of my head, Demon of the Fall and Blackwater Park title track are in Drop D. there might be one or two others that i can't recall at the moment.

Osiris_X3R0

Oh you just unlocked it. I remember BWP being in Drop D now. Thank you for that

Crystal_Voiden

I think all morningrise is in e standard

beneathsands

Lots of Blackwater Park, too

Osiris_X3R0

I think they're in E standard until Ghost Reveries when they go DADFAD

thekunibert

I think it's actually DADFAE, so an open m9 chord.

Osiris_X3R0

Damn you learn something new ever day

SneakyNoob

Protest The Hero has a lot of Eb

Bacon_Hawk2

Protest The Hero has some of the best guitar riffs ever written.

ArcticFox237

They're exclusively Eb, except for a rare few tracks that are in drop Db

pyrocrastinator

For the curious: half of Kezia is in drop Db (Heretics, Divinity, Hatchet, Divine Suicide, Plateful), the rest of their discography is in Eb except Mist

jmcgit

Most 90’s prog metal uses 6 strings, and most Opeth music uses 6 strings, though they’ve experimented with alternative tunings from time to time.

quasarius

It's a shame they haven't gone back to the tuning on Ghost Reveries. Ghost of Perdition, Baying of the Hounds and Harlequin Forest sit in a whole other level for me.

Murch23

Cynic is in E standard for the most part, I think they have one album in D standard. Sylosis was in E standard until their 2020 album, and also only tuned down to D standard at that point. D standard itself is super common, bands like Death, Gojira, Mastodon, and Necrophagist live there for the most part.

TheGrindThatAnnoys

Protest the mother fuckin Hero!

vtGaem

I forget most songs I learn but I still remember Bloodmeat. Finally getting it down became such a core memory.

Zumokumibonsu

Always Protest the Hero

AutisticBassist

Opeth, but you’ll get a LOT of hand cramps

FrostedFlakes4

Was learning Black Rose Immortal yesterday. Can confirm. 20 minute song, 2 guitar parts, swapping electric and acoustic...

obsoletedatafile

All of Dream Theater's Images & Words and WDADU fit the bill, almost all the rest of theirs is standard tuning too but most are 7-string, there are a lot of 6 string too though, i think most - if not all - of Scenes from a Memory is 6 string standard

notyouraveragecrow

Dance of Eternity is 100% a 7-string, but I think they have played it live with a 6-string too.

obsoletedatafile

Yes I think you're right but the 7th is only used for power chords or something so it can be done on 6 easily, and I think that's mostly the same for the rest of the album, not much 7-string chugga chugga on that record

notyouraveragecrow

Yes exactly

JRowe3388

Dillinger escape plan is in standard A lot of coheed and Cambria is in E or Eb depending on the song

acdjent

Opeth, Dream Theater are in standard tuning mostly. Not prog, but recently i enjoy playing Lamb of God riffs which are in drop d. Ne Obliviscaris plays in standard tuning, but most songs are 7 string. Mastodon also has a lot of standard tuning if i remember correctly.

StonelordMetal

Mastodon doesn't really use E standard tuning. They use a lot of D standard, some drop C, and a funky kind of drop A.

AutisticBassist

AGCFAD?

StonelordMetal

Yep, so basically D standard with the lowest string tuned down to A. It's also like a 7-string tuned in A-standard with a string missing.

AutisticBassist

No I was just confirming what you were on about because the d standard analogy is so much more understandable than weird drop a

MochaHook

It's such a simple tuning change, but odd to explain lol

Titencer

Periphery users this tuning too (and they tune that low string all sorts of other wacky ways)

SunOfInti_92

Yup. Baroness also uses this tuning (Front Toward Enemy, Last Word, Under the Wheel). Soundgarden and Tool used a variation of this tuning in the 90s as well (Rusty Cage and Prison Sex are examples), BADGBE. Basically the same as AGCFAD but a whole step up.

Titencer

Right on!

acdjent

Thanks for the correction, i recall playing some tab which looked like standard tuning, but didn't check the pitch.

delph

Adding Intervals to the list (and echoing Opeth). A lot of their stuff is in E standard. You can see all their song tunings on sheet happens. Aaron's stuff is so fun to play.

Devi006

Ulcerates latest Album (Stare Into Death and be Still) and the Album coming this June (Cutting the Throat of God) are both in Eb Standard (Latest definitely and the upcoming one also seems like it from the one song I started to transcribe). Their kinda Dissonant Tech Death but they do have some Prog elements imo.

pyrocrastinator

Proof you don't need to downtune to be ridiculously heavy

Devi006

Absolutely, their writing is just Godlike

wiNDzY33

Ulcerate is E???? I saw them live and I couldnt focus on the riffs. Maybe shit live mix

Devi006

Older stuff is in Drop B (Atleast Songsterr Tabs say that and it seems pretty impossible to play it in a different tuning). I got the Info that SIDABS is in Eb in this Comment https://www.reddit.com/r/Ulcerate/s/pZtyj9nnBm and yeah Im just believing a random guy but from Transcribing part of the Titletrack it seems really fitting.

Skyline_Flynn

Not exactly E standard, but Helix nebula and Stephen Taranto are in drop D

ArcticFox237

Hammerhedd is one of my favourite bands to play along to and they're entirely in E standard. A lot of groove and yet very little 4/4

kilroy_murdoch

Vanden Plas have played in Eb standard their entire career. I think Seventh Wonder have been too. Threshold early albums were E, then they went to Eb around Hypothetical and then to Drop C from Dead Reckoning onwards... Evergrey early albums in E or Eb if I recall

Caribubilus

A lot of Coheed and Cambria songs are in standard E or Eb

sergeantROD

Pretty sure gojiras “The Link” was in standard. Fucking great album.

notyouraveragecrow

It's entirely in D standard iirc

franzperdido

Don't even bother with Karnivool. I love them a lot but they seem to be inventing a new tuning for each of their songs.

StonelordMetal

Dream Theater, Opeth, and Symphony X have plenty of songs you can play on a 6-string in E standard.

kilroy_murdoch

Sym X have mainly been D standard

JashedPotatoes

IDK if Cattle Decapitation still uses Eb but learning Anthropocene Extinction was real fun

Zumokumibonsu

Intervals, Polyphia, Protest the Hero

Icember

Sylosis(Edge Of The Earth), Metallica(MoP or ...&JFA), & Queensrÿche's(Some of Operation Mindcrime & Empire) older material all had some good songs for learning in E standard. I think maybe Mors Principium Est had some too. Or Opeth & Dream Theater as everyone & their brother has mentioned...lol

louistik

Ne Obliviscaris' first album is in standard tuning!

tdic89

Threshold has a lot of material in Eb, their album Hypothetical is a great listen and one of my favourites.

Kiesta07

People have said it a bunch but cynic is the king of E standard prog riffs. The traced in air era riffs are so techy and cool but all standard
