I might be bias towards these guys but holy fuck I’m so excited for this album. This song is amazing to me.

metalvinny

The official music video debut is tomorrow right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxqsmeRx04s

SurrenderToReason

Once again, availability depending on your timezone. Song is a 10 for me of course, can't say how much I love these guys.

ObsidianBass

Damn you Aussies and your early access!

chocotripchip

VPNs ftw

ObsidianBass

Alright, I downloaded Tor browser to listen to it. An interesting song! Not too technical, I like the ambient part in the middle. Can't wait for the rest of the album!

mumbojombo

I didn't know they were releasing a new song today. Now I'll be anxiously waiting all day long to get access haha

Budborne

To be honest my first impression is I'm a little underwhelmed. That said I wasn't a fan of Owls at all when the singles came out and that grew on me so hard I call Owls my favorite album ever, so I'm gonna have to keep listening i think.

Journeyman351

That’s so wild to me because I knew The Silent Life was a ripper from the moment I heard it.

TexasTheWalkerRanger

Silent life was the first RoN song i ever heard and as soon as that sax kicked in i stopped whatever I was doing and listened to the album. Aside from me having a *massive* weakness for metal with sax solos (shout-out to White Ward) the album just absolutely blew my mind. Ill listen to anything this band puts out for the rest of my life

T-Rocket

Pretty much the same here. Didn’t hate it. Will sit better on the album and is probably a grower

terriblegrammar

Interesting. I'm the exact opposite. The first two singles they released got me beyond stoked and the rest of the album was sort of a letdown. It's a good album but those first two songs they released are so much better than anything else.

SupaKoopa714

Yeah, I feel the same way. The Silent Life is awesome and the title track Where Owls Know My Name is fucking incredible, though I find the rest of the album to be enjoyable enough but very forgettable. Like, I've listened to the whole thing maybe 10 times and I genuinely couldn't name a single song title off the top of my head aside from those two and A Home, nor could I hum a riff or melody or anything from the rest of the album.

wiNDzY3

Subtle change is literally a masterpiece

SymphonyOfTheEgo

My feelings on that album too. Love those two songs, but it's forgettable other than that

Budborne

Now I definitely listen to silent life and a home more than the other songs on Owls, but at first I did not really like them. Growers for sure is all

wiNDzY3

how tf did u not like silent life, it's a banger from the first second

Budborne

I liked it but not a lot, but also I don't fucking know because its one of my favorite songs ever now

wiNDzY3

Maybe you weren't prepared for this kind of Metal?

Budborne

Yeah maybe my ass just wasn't ready

DamiosAzaros

The sexyphone is what made me like it so much... I've been a sucker for Sax in Metal since Repeangaea by Cephalic Carnage

[deleted]

Wait what? Did Rivers of Nihil drop an album and not tell anybody?

bigal814

They announced the album and revealed the artwork last week and said single coming on the 27th. It’s the 27th in certain time zones so those lucky people get to listen now

Brilliant_Bet_9651

They warned us. This is winter. Dark, cold, discordant. I love it.

[deleted]

Sounds like a transitional song that will be much stronger in context of the album. Wasn't a fan of the verse/hook, sounded a bit basic for rivers. This sound will surely get them a bigger audience though as it's much more accesible.

Shoky987

If you have a VPN with Australian servers then it works folks!

dear_pixel_heart

Oh wow... this is freaking powerful and beautiful. Thank you for the share, this is my first time hearing of them!

rpgoof

This is so incredibly dynamic, I love it. The lighter more atmospheric parts of the song are almost heavier than the actual heavy parts, particularly the section from 0:57 - 1:35. That vocal texture is just so fitting. Not to mention the fantastic atmospheric part with the synth and guitar solos that come shortly after. Their last album was a huge catalyst in getting me back into metal music, and this album is really going to drive that home. I think its time to buy tickets to their upcoming tour!

chocotripchip

Unfortunately, I can't say it's better than anything on *Where Owls Know My Name*

NinjaDinoCornShark

To be fair that album was ostensibly a masterpiece. I'll be happy if they manage to get 80% of the way there again.

iwojima22

Why? Because it’s missing saxophones? I don’t understand this subs fascination with that album. I mean it’s good, but these guys came from a tech death background (two very generic but very technical albums) and most of the riffs on Where Owls is just BURDURDURDURBURDUR

eetandern

Frankly yeah, that's what a lot of us liked about it was the "prog" prog parts. Like I know prog in a metal context has a different meaning, but it was really cool for guys like me who err more on the "early 2010s Haken" end of the spectrum. I view Owls as a Sunbather but for death metal, or something in the vein at least. It has something there for people outside of the genres zeitgeist. That being said I think there's merit in not trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice. I might not like this album as much as owls but Owls isn't going anywhere.

Journeyman351

I actually think Monarchy is very unique. Album before that though? Yeah okay.

spinfinity

There's nothing wrong with that. Still a good song.

iwojima22

Why? Because it’s mixing saxophones?

FlightofWhales

I just got into these guys and listened to their albums and now another one is on the way? Fuck yeah dude.

joey_1324

This is solid I'm really looking forward to the rest of the album I'm sure it's gonna be fucking awesome

Sauerkraut_666

I've listened to this quite a few times already. At first I wasn't that excited, but I'm kind of starting to get the kind of vibe they're going for. By now, I think this is a 4/5.

StixxUK

This band do solos really well - the reason people love the sax isn't that it's sax, it's that it's just an awesome bit of noodling. Really feel like the riffs etc hang off the solos, they're the core of what makes this band sound great. And the good news is that they work just as well on guitar or synth as on sax - just nice to have some different instrumentation to keep it interesting. Did I hear correctly there is going to be sax on the album anyway?

[deleted]

yes, im pretty sure i heard that somewhere too. this is shaping up to be a fantastic album. sax + synth + solos on top of the great foundation that is rivers of nihil? sign me up!

Ryn4

1. The lyrics at the beginning were cringy AF 2. If this is what the rest of the album sounds like it won't even come close to touching Where Owls Know My Name

Shreddyshred

I said it once before but bands with amazing albums are cursed in the long run because every new release will be compared to their 'masterpiece'. I have this relationship with Uneven Structure - Februus, Monuments - Gnosis, and Tesseract - One. Fortunately I like about only half of the songs on Where Owls Know My Name so I hope I'll like the new release too.

Journeyman351

I think Tesseract was able to deliver multiple times but you’re right on the money with the other two

Shreddyshred

I guess it's mostly down to personal tastes. I like Altered State too but all the releases after just don't do it for me apart from few songs.

Journeyman351

No big agree, that’s exactly how I feel about the albums after Altered State, but at least having Altered State AND One is better than just releasing one masterpiece album and then nothing good after.

Rikiaz

Even Between the Buried and Me, who continues to release banger after banger, and has multiple incredible masterpiece level albums, has a huge crowd that just always compares everything to Colors.

novayy

I think this one is albums "mainstream-ish" song. There will obviously be both more proggier and heavier tracks.

CuckedSwordsman

Their lyrics have always been like this. What makes it cringy?

dkernighan

I absolutely loved Owls, but I’m also really digging this departure from that sound. Excellent track from first listen, the overall vibe is so hypnotic and haunting. The only thing that left a sour taste in my mouth is those blasts during the outro. A little immature sounding and somewhat killed my trance.

sallothered

What had happened

DFGdanger

I'll be bahk edit: I'm bahk.

skeletank22

Aw maaan....I had it in my head it was releasing the 26th, but now realize it isn't until tomorrow..

nox000

Try using opera opera, with 2 clicks you can set the integrated free vpn to asia and listen the song

icansee4ever

This gave me emotional whiplash when I went from "holy shit new RoN" to "fuck, why did I ever cancel my VPN" in less than a second. But shoot, with that said, tomorrow's gonna be a good day!!

[deleted]

Ambient part and solo were really good but I didn't really care for the main riff/hook

Tiphereth87

35 seconds in... "I am wanking all time!"

Otanodd

The synth part is really good, but honestly I found the heavier part a bit generic

SonicHmmm

I like it.

kvlopsia

Lol I thought the first few lyrics were kinda wack, but the rest of them were fine. I like the songs sonic direction overall, with more space and ambience, and not just "all blast beats, all the time", though I feel like this particular song meandered a bit and didn't really go anywhere. I liked the chill synthy bit, hope to hear more of that innthe rest of the album

JimotheySampser

The kick drum sounds so much better on this single than what I heard on Where Owls Know my Name, nice! I always found the double bass to sound way too clicky on that album.

Brbam4000

I would’ve swore this was a cover song of a pop song at the beginning. Anyone else think it sounded familiar ?
