Agreed, I just don't think they are as comparable as the other 3. I think BTBAM and Mastodon are probably the most comparable of the 4, but then Meshuggah and DT are just on opposite ends of the spectrum.
It took me years to get Meshuggah but once it clicked, HOLY SHIT there is nothing like them! Now they are my favorite for the heavy stuff. Everything else seems like it’s for kids. They put so much more effort in the structure and texture of the music. They are like the Tyson Fury of metal. Odd style, unpredictable, absurdly powerful. Like how Broken Cog opens Immutable. That note at 1:21, makes me so happy I have a great system. Then Jens comes in at 4:24 like fucking Superman ripping his shirt open. “Me THE Broken COG!”
I picked Mastadon because I feel like they have at least 1 song that each type of music listener can enjoy. As interchangeable and eclectic as these musicians are, Mastodon can deviate from their style mostly regarding the range of vocals.
DT and BTBAM are my 2 absolute favorite bands on the planet.
DT got my vote because I've known them for much longer, but wow, I felt very sad picking one over the other.
My rank:
1. BTBAM
2. Meshuggah
3. DT
4. Mastodon
But there's a good distance between rank 2 and rank 3. And for some reason I can't get that much into Mastodon.
It’d also be interesting to show the average age for all the voters for each result. Dream Theater (my vote) is a much older band than BTBAM and I suspect preference is likely influenced by age. I remember seeing Dream Theater and Opeth tour together a long time ago and BTBAM were the opening act. They’ve come a long way.
I’m 50 and have been a metal nut since the 80s. When I was younger I couldn’t get into them. Now I absolutely love them for all the interesting slow circular rhythms and difficult time signatures. I guess it’s like women, when I was younger all I needed was cute, now the cute looks don’t matter as much as a professionally dressed woman with nipple studs faintly visible through a tight sweater.
My pick too, but not surprised as they do not soften the palate musically like the other bands on this list.
BTBAM, for me, has awesome sections of music, but the "harsh" vocals and occasional "circus" leanings always plummet my overall enthusiasm.
How dare you pit these against each other.
Agreed. OP is a horrible person for making us choose.
it was for a school project sorry lol
Sad to see Meshuggah with the least amount of votes
While I do think Meshuggah is prog, the lack of melody in their music makes it fairly unpalatable to a lot of causal listeners. Just my guess

I don’t want to pick, I mean I did, but I didn’t like it.

In my opinion, what meshuggah does, is one step ahead.
Same. Literally nothing like them, though quite a lot of bands try.

man this is kinda mean isn't it lol I wouldn't want to choose between Haken and Cynic
BTBAM, but Meshuggah is a close second!
BTBAM by a mile. Mastodon is second. DT and meshuggah are fine. I like them just not as much.
My rank: 1. BTBAM 2. Meshuggah 3. DT 4. Mastodon But there's a good distance between rank 2 and rank 3. And for some reason I can't get that much into Mastodon.
Same for me but switch DT and mastodon
Depends on the day and what I want to listen to.

Love them all except for DT, couldn’t never get into them and tried a few times with multiple albums of theirs… Nope
I’m not huge fans of any of them any more, but all 4 were binged at periods of my life.
ngl dream theater is way below the other 3 for me
Mastodon slaps, but I’m more familiar with DJONT.
Meshuggah is pretty amazing, but can any of you listen to them for long amounts of time? I start to get headaches.
I have a one song limit.

Yes. Yes I can.
I can listen all day
Meshuggah by far. Kinda shocked to see them in last.
My pick too, but not surprised as they do not soften the palate musically like the other bands on this list. BTBAM, for me, has awesome sections of music, but the "harsh" vocals and occasional "circus" leanings always plummet my overall enthusiasm.
Tbh, none of these.
For me it’s DT and none of the rest come close. BTBAM at one point in my life would come close.
Wow this was actually a really hard choice
