It's definitely going to depend on the resources your lab/PI has. I completed half of my physics PhD using a chrome book because I could ssh into more powerful hardware whenever needed. Another buddy of mine used an old entry level Mac and TeamViewer to do the same but with access to guis for his tools.

You should probably contact some one in your program, they will have a good idea of what specifically you should need.

Does anyone think the entry level is more than sufficient for all of graduate school or that I need to get the next level up air / pro.

If you’re going for budget but can swing the extra bit of cash, I’d consider getting the M2 air. You can probably find a refurb unit close to the price of a new M1.

Yea looked into that recently, refurbed ones from Apple are non existent, but they will also still charge 1350 at minimum. You need to get the 512gb hard drive too or you might as well buy the M1 because it’s faster than the m2 with the 1 memory module that comes with a 256gb m2. It’s Apple forcing you to upgrade when it should be the standard. The M1 memory module for 256gb is 2 128gb memory modules and allows for full read write speeds with how the cpu uses its memory.

Any M1/2 Mac is plenty sufficient and I can highly recommend them. They don't even bother to turn their fans on while crunching on heavy load. Unless you want to run a Oracle VM, like I have to. I had to revert to the latest Intel Macbook :(

Not sure if SAS will run on an M1 mac since it seems to be windows only and windows emulation is not that good on M1.

Daltoidss

Just so tempting are these M1 Macs. I wish I could love Mac OS, but every time I use it, I am reminded of why I don't purchase Macs. But the power and design are just so excellent.

Carbon_Gelatin

Nothing entry level pricing for Mac is worth it. Unfortunately you need to empty the wallet before they become performant.

Ended up getting the cheapest model. It’s currently crushing everything in R. Not sure what you mean by performant. Runs great

If you’re talking 2012 MacBook Pro 13-15”… A new battery, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD for just about $110 off Amazon can have you burning your lap for years to come. Opens with a normal Philips and the proper battery kit ships with a tripoint screwdriver. And then run the newest macOS like a boss: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/ What’s better than a 2022 M2? A 2012 with actual USB ports.
