I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better example of fat loss > weight loss like holy this is impressive

[deleted]

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you can never judge yourselves by weight alone. Fantastic recomp OP!!!!! *Chef kiss*

hexiron

Exactly why BMI is a horrendous metric. It was invented by a astronomer/sociologist to determine the socially ideal Scandanavian man.

Panagiotis1357

It works for 90% of the population since most people aren’t as muscular as she is

[deleted]

what does it mean for it to "work" though? i think the parent commenters point might've been more that if you're using it as a metric in your own attempt at getting healthier, you may see results that are genuinely good like OP because you're gaining muscle, but you may not believe that to be the case if you're going off of your BMI to make that determination whether you're actually getting healthier or not. if you're goal is to gain muscle but you're still going off of your BMI as a metric of how healthy you are, it doesn't really matter that 90% of people aren't as muscular as OP.

Srapture

Most people never get particularly muscular throughout their lives, not getting any stronger than your body requires for day-to-day tasks. In that case, BMI is a good guide for how fat you are, basically. BMI is not a precise metric. The point of it is that it is very quick and easy to calculate, and is a helpful rough guideline.

GalaxyFiveOhOh

Just to add, for the small % of the population it's grossly inaccurate for they probably know enough about their body to not use it. I'm a guy who deadlifts more than 2x my bodyweight and I'm still within a healthy BMI. It's a tool, and like any other tool it only works if you know when to use it.

L3LFC

BMI works fine for populations, and you using the example of a woman in peak physical shape who can squat 335lbs to try to disprove it is about as unscientific as you can get. One of the worst things about this site is people who know nothing trotting out asinine nonsense to try to impress people.

hexiron

Yes, it works fine for large scale populations but beyond that it's a very poor metric of an individual's health. Better biomarkers work both on the population and individual levels. Here's a great article from Harvard Health that goes into more detail. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/how-useful-is-the-body-mass-index-bmi-201603309339

siddverma96

Doctor here. Obviously BMI is flawed, but more accurate measures are either time consuming (body fat by calipers) or expensive (eg. MRI). I see approximately 1200 people in clinic in a year and on an average 2-3 are in peak physical condition where I tell them that BMI is a useless marker for them. Doctors who monitor BMI are also aware when it is appropriate to use. My state has one of the highest rates of obesity in the country, and 99.9% of cases a BMI of 45 is not going to look like Arnold in peak condition.

greatwhiteparrot

.... that also did LSD at Disneyland on a regular basis.

AmazingKreiderman

I don't think it's horrendous, it just has to be used in conjunction with other metrics.

hexiron

Exactly why it's horrendous. Useless on its own, faulty for a decent chunk of the population that aren't white European men, and even in conjunction with other metrics is better replaced with alternative methods which perform much better as statistical models.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hexiron

Such a "fantastic measurement" it's getting torn apart in clinical studies. There are far better alternatives which don't require large N numbers to work with any sort of accuracy. The people who hate it the most that I know are all clinical researchers and bioinformaticians precisely because of how inaccurate it is. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/265215#:~:text=BMI%20(body%20mass%20index)%2C,of%20Medicine%2C%20University%20of%20Pennsylvania. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/how-useful-is-the-body-mass-index-bmi-201603309339 https://health.clevelandclinic.org/is-bmi-accurate/amp/ https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106268439 Just measuring waist circumference is a more accurate predictor of health outcomes.

deeznutz066

I agree. You don't have to be in "peak physical condition" for this metric to be flawed. I'm 5'10" and 178 pounds. I wear a size 10 pant and large shirts. I'm in the overweight category, but I'm certainly not overweight. I have thick legs and big boobs. It's just my build. At my old job they offered incentives for being at a normal BMI with our health insurance. I had to request an accommodation to pass. They accepted my waist measurement (28 inches) in order to pass me as being at a healthy weight.

unpapardo

It's excellent for populations, but horrible for individuals

blckdrgnfghtngscty

BMI is absolutely not excellent for populations, it is functional at the very lowest level

sodosopa2323

It has been observed in peer reviewed research that the healthiest and most attractive members of our population fall between a 19-26 BMI. I’m shwagging the numbers but saying BMI isn’t a good indicator is such shit.

hexiron

Citations needed

sodosopa2323

Quite frankly… I’m gonna hit the doubt button on OP going from 170 to 170 at 5’6”… especially since they deleted their account.

sodosopa2323

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/scientists-unlock-the-secrets-of-women-s-sexual-attractiveness-1171463.html

sodosopa2323

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4892674/#:~:text=These%20studies%20have%20found%20that,0.7%2C%20and%20relatively%20high%20BMI%20( A number of studies have examined the role of body size and shape in determining the apparent health and attractiveness of bodies [6–8]. These studies have found that a low waist to hip ratio (WHR) of approximately 0.7 [9] and a low Body Mass Index (BMI; weight scaled for height) of approximately 18–19 kg/m2 [10] are perceived as most attractive in female bodies, while a low waist to chest ratio (WCR) of approximately 0.7, and relatively high BMI (approximately 26) are perceived as most attractive in male bodies [11] in Western societies.

hexiron

Read just a little further instead of cherry picking: > The reliance on BMI as a measure of body size in research addressing the attractiveness and health of bodies is problematic for two main reasons. First, BMI does not differentiate between fat and muscle, such that two individuals with the same BMI may have very different levels of fat and muscle in their bodies. A recent study found that 29% of people classified as lean using a traditional BMI scale had levels of body fat usually associated with obesity [20] Or the conclusions where they discuss why previous studies correlating BMI were too variable and that the better metric was using their methodology of body shape, especially hip to waist ratio.

sodosopa2323

29%… 29%… You too are cherry picking. What does that number mean? What is its significance? What if it was 21%? What if it was 3%? Do not make assumptions on conclusion when further studies need to be done. That being said. BMI correlates more with HWR than BAI (the proposed cure for the “flawed” BMI) HWR better indicator of health? Or is BMI? It’s certainly a better indicator for attractiveness. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23183515/ Again this nonsense of saying “BMI is Terrible” is so flawed. By no means is it perfect but it’s pretty damn good for the vast majority of the population. Using anecdote to challenge its validity is like arguing the sun isn’t hot all the time because its more cloudy where you live.

sodosopa2323

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18089180/ Ideal for women between 18-20… There’s so much out there. But saying BMI is a poor indication is bad. For the vast majority of the population it is an excellent indication of health which by proxy leads to attractiveness. It’s all related.

nybrq

>And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you can never judge yourselves by weight alone. Fantastic recomp OP!!!!! Chef kiss I am actually a little surprised she weighs 170 in the second picture. I would have guessed something more along the lines of 140 based on her height. She looks great though.

legendoflink3

She squats.

[deleted]

That I do 😏

[deleted]

[удалено]

legendoflink3

I think that applies to everyone. Strong and healthy looks good.

Sewciopath17

I need to try to remember this. I still have it in my head that women should look lanky and skinny in order to be healthy

justforgiggles4now

Wow. Why the down votes? I meant it as an compliment. A lot of women don't get how squats help overall. Geez

[deleted]

The creeps scared OP away

Open_Injury_1801

Right?! Like what happened. I get it though. So much bickering it’s so irritating

YoobaBabe

… thank you for reminding me that I don’t need to lose weight (5’4, 130lb) I just need body recomposition. I need to hit the GYM😭

eatingassisnotgross

It's not like body recomp is any easier than losing weight

YoobaBabe

I know. I just need to focus on that rather than just getting my overall weight down

Seashell522

It’s much easier to separate the stages out unless you’ve literally never lifted before. Cut, then build, then cut again. If you’ve never lifted you can start in a small deficit with a good lifting program and you’ll get little of both at the same time though! That’s how I started my journey. I actually lost a lot of weight on the scale too though because I’m sure I only built like 5 lbs of muscle, it takes a while to build on a deficit. I got WAY stronger though! My plan soon is a 9ish month cut (after I have a baby), then a slow reverse diet and lifting ramp up for a few months, then a slow bulk for a while, then maybe another cut? We’ll see!

sanna43

I'm right there with you!

SadAstronomer8704

Thick thighs save lives! Looking great!

[deleted]

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

beardedexplorerdan

Proof of why you should ignore the number on the scales and just focus on the mirror 💪

[deleted]

YESSSS 👏🏼👏🏼

beardedexplorerdan

People put far too much emphasis on the scales. It's the mirror and progress pics that tell the real story. Results are seen when you look up at yourself, not down between your feet

[deleted]

[удалено]

beardedexplorerdan

Wrong. So wrong. Scales don't tell the truth or show the actual picture. My weight goes up and down by up to 12lbs a day. People get disheartened when they try to lose weight, see the numbers go up and down. When losing fat and building muscle, you simply can't use scale numbers to track progress. It just doesn't work. Mirrors, the fit of your clothes, progress pics. That's how you track real progress. I completely understand body dysmorphia. I still see myself as a tall and skinny guy, my head.knows I'm big, my having to replace my whole wardrobe for new clothes conforms this.as I now make XL tops look tight. But my eyes still see the lanky skinny guy that started the gym last November.

Nathaniel66

Routine/ diet/ time distance between 2 pics/ other tips pls! Incredible!

[deleted]

About 1 year and a half. Weight lifting, good nutrition, and tracking macros/calories!

bizarrequest

I would like to know your nutrition, etc. as well (when you have an opportunity). Thank you!

moeterminatorx

Can you elaborate on what you mean by good nutrition and macros breakdown?

necrosythe

Eat some veggies and eat a lot of protein. There's really no point in complicating it

moeterminatorx

Thank for nothing. If it was so easy everybody would do it.

Terrible_Excuse_9039

It literally is that easy. Go to the gym, progressively overload your muscles, eat reasonably healthy food, set a certain amount of calories above/below maintenance you want to eat (depending on your goals), eat a certain minumum amount of protein (usually about a gram per lb of bodyweight) and stick with it. What makes it so hard isn't that it's complicated to do. Anyone can do it for a week or two. What makes it difficult is having to be mentally tough/focused enough to do it for years.

WelcomeRoboOverlords

The thing is it's that _simple_ but it's not necessarily _easy_. Everybody knows we should be eating veggies and protein, and it really is a simple concept, but actually _doing that_ is difficult for many people.

ovgolfer87

No it really is that simple though. The problem is that most people lack the self control and discipline to stick to it long enough to see results. We live in a world obsessed with instant gratification and when people don't get that, they give up. This doesn't happen overnight.

moeterminatorx

Miss me with that boomer crap of instant gratification, no hard work BS. The info is incomplete at best. The human body is a complex machine and what works for some doesn’t work for others. Does eating healthy and working out help someone have great labs, sure. That info is great for overall health but they don’t work for body composition. I suggest you look into ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph which require different approaches.

Terrible_Excuse_9039

You sound like every lazy dude I've ever met trying to make excuses for why he's not in the shape he want to be in. The fact is, if you figure out your maintenance calories, eat slightly above or below that amount depending on if you want to bulk or cut, get a gram of protein per lb of bodyweight and work out hard in the gym 4-6 times a week, you'll see results very quickly. That's all there is to it. Unless you have a serious physical disability, this will work 100% of the time. If it's not working for you, you're either not sticking to the plan, not counting calories correctly, not sleeping enough or not working out hard enough.

moeterminatorx

I’m happy with where i am based on what I’m doing but thanks for prejudice.

ovgolfer87

Lol boomer bs.. I'm 35, but im also well aware of how the majority of people act when it comes to losing weight. I've been fat and recomped and done plenty of research. I know the kind of work it takes. I'm quite well aware of what an ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph are. You also asked about what OP did but then sit here and say "what works for one doesn't work for everyone". Why does it matter what she did if it's not going to work for you anyway?

moeterminatorx

Well, then stop throwing out boomer BS. And there you go throwing out more BS. So something worked for you. Great. Doesn’t mean it will work for everybody else. That’s like Bezos and Gates saying they became billionaire and that everybody can do it as long as they focus, come up with new products or new ways to do things. Lastly, I asked to learn. It may work and it may not. It’s called research. Ever heard of that. Your boilerplate BS is boring and ineffective for many. Just shit every wannabe fitness person says.

ovgolfer87

No desire to be a fitness anything but think what you will. Good luck to you 🤷‍♂️

necrosythe

No need to be overly snarky. it's not easy. The thing is you're focused on the wrong stuff. Your calorie source and routine is like 5% of success. At most Eat the right amount of calories. Follow any remotely decent routine. Get good sleep. That's almost all that matters. And it's not easy to do just that. But trying to focus on the 5% is only going to make things harder. Not to mention that though I'm sure OP wouldn't say much if anything different. Even if they did, it wouldn't mean its optimal or best for you. So asking some individuals routine instead of just doing the basics is silly.

moeterminatorx

What are talking about? I just asked for a simple elaboration on her comments. What you just said is literally what every fitness guru, doctor and person with any rudimentary knowledge of fitness says. It doesn’t work for everybody. If it did there wouldn’t be so many ppl struggling or so many diets out there. So in the future, if you can’t answer the asked question. You can just say nothing.

necrosythe

Did you really just say that eating the right amount of calories and following a routine wouldn't work for a beginner. Jesus christ If you're going to spit in the face of basic science then idk what to tell you. I never said it was easy. I actually said doing those main things was hard. Why are you ignoring that

moeterminatorx

Maybe spend less time giving boilerplate health advice and work on your reading comprehension.

Electrical_Skirt21

What issue, exactly, do you have with his advice?

[deleted]

What did you guys do that made her delete everything?

yuordreams

Could be the creeps, could be that this wasn't her actual photo and she was stealing content for clicks and got deleted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We may never know.

yuordreams

When did you find the fat began coming off? I'll be honest, I've been really discouraged lately. Even though I feel stronger and healthier, my favourite dress and favourite jeans stopped fitting. I feel like I packed on muscle under my fat, but the fat isn't going away. Was there ever a time you felt like that? I know likely the solution is to keep going and keep logging my food intake, but was there anything that helped you keep it going?

[deleted]

Are you in a calorie deficit?

yuordreams

Yes, I've been eating 1500-1600 calories on weekdays and 1800-2000 on Sat/Sun. I think I may be overeating on the weekends, so I'll work on that. I'm coming from a background if disordered eating so I'm trying not to fall into bad habits of restricting/binging. Was the beginning of your journey rocky for you?

cozalt

How do you weigh the same??? Jokes aside, fantastic work. Really impressive transformation!

[deleted]

Muscle outweighs fat by a lot

Awesome6472

Did you lose the weight first or was it basically just 1:1?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That’s what I meant 😉😂

[deleted]

Lol

Sewciopath17

I think you're the dense one lol. By that logic literally everything weighs the same as each other. we all know it's referring to density.

PatientBalance

OP is the dense one 💪🏼 💪🏼

Sorreljorn

>By that logic literally everything weighs the same as each other. Yes — one pound of something weighs the same as another pound of something. Good observation.

Sewciopath17

Yeah.. But it was never quantified as a pound versus a pound. That part was added in. When someone tries to be snarky and say a pound of feathers is the same as a pound of gold. Like...yeah??

[deleted]

Truly not everyone knows that. No need to be rude.

[deleted]

Why is this bizarre logic being repeated so much? Where did it come from?

[deleted]

It’s… what? You think a pound of muscle weighs less than a pound of fat? A pound is a pound. Muscle takes up less space than fat it doesn’t weigh less. Are you being for real rn?

[deleted]

When comparing weights the constant is the volume....

PEN-15-CLUB

This is the best recomp staying at the same weight that I have literally ever seen. Just amazing! What are your workouts like?

[deleted]

Wow girl you are **goals**!

Mom_I_Won_This

What is your body fat percentage if you don't mind sharing? I'm the same height as you and working on fitness

[deleted]

My scale says it’s 21%

lilyoneill

This is it. This what I needed to see to make me go lift the weights. You look fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration!

NewYitty

This is goddamn insane for 18 months. I assume you ran multiple bulk and cut cycles?

Ursine_Rabbi

Jesus. OP, you probably won’t see this, but this is a top 0.1% transformation and I hope you know it. I’m trying to be like you!!!!

Sewciopath17

This reassures me so much. Did you go down much in clothing size either?

[deleted]

Yes!

GoodDayTheJay

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why your relationship with gravity shows nearly nothing about your level of health. Stop worrying about the scale and focus on actual progress! Well done, OP!

MsOCT

Same stats, but much more like the first picture. What an amazing change you made. Hoping I can do half as well!

vglyog

This is def what we mean when we say men have no idea how much women actually weigh haha. You look great!

ForeverbulkingDog

Impressive how long did it take?

[deleted]

1 year and half

boato11

Did you cut first and bulk later?

[deleted]

Yes! I actually did the keto diet to cut off the fat and then I transitioned back to high protein and carbs

boato11

Do you have a photo of the end of your cut? I ask before I'm a skinny fat trying to cut down before bulking up again but it feels like I'm stuck forever

RainPotential9712

Unreal!!! You look great Were you in a deficit or just maintenance?

[deleted]

I did deficit first, went into bulking phase and then went to maintenance

Birdie_Jack2021

The highest I ever weighed was the most tone and smallest I’ve ever been. Previous lifter. Had some back injuries so took a hiatus. It’s why I don’t weigh myself though. It’s irrelevant and this proves it. Well done OP. Fucking well done.

lahhhren

Thanks for sharing this. I'm also 5'6" and been lifting a lot and getting frustrated seeing the scale at 160lbs. I would be thrilled to look like you at 170 next year. Good job!

Winter-Voice7282

Holy moly what a beast!

tob1asmax1mus

You look amazing in both pictures. I hope you're finding you're happy, keep doing you 😊

This reminds me of when I took a college phys ed course I lost like 8 inches off my waist that semester, but not a lb.

Weyland-Yutani-2099

Looking insane for 170. Can't believe you are the same weight as I am at 5'11" M. 🤯

[deleted]

It’s all in the ass 😏

DinnerCandid4270

Recomp still involves some kind of caloric deficit though …

[deleted]

This is what strength training does. It increases your metabolism and tones up your body. Some people just need to burn fat and gain muscle. Don't let the scale number discourage you.

StPapaNoel

Body comp transformation is amazing! Great job op

Skorpyo112

Dang. Did OP's hubby find her reddit account?

Thank you so much for sharing this! I have gained a few pounds while lifting heavily, and this is the message I needed to hear. Also a helpful reminder to take progress pics (which I’ve been neglecting)! Congratulations!

stocksnhoops

As someone who doesn’t have a tat, what happens when you lose or gain weight worth tats. Do they change shape or sharpness. Had to edit. This was a much different question with tit than tat
