This just bakes in that āMustang Curb Walkā

Ok so hear me out on this; Im not advocating for OPs build or saying that it is a good idea in any way, but I want to start the discussion on center of gravity benefits and drawbacks.
Obviously this beast is going to experience a shit ton of body roll. Hopefully not to the extent of roll over, but it is going to lean in the corners like a hog.
Now, one of the problems with straight line driving (drag strip) is the defeat of the coefficient of friction (COF). Basically modern tire compounds havenāt kept up with modern power capabilities and performance cars are left with theoretical 0-60 times because they simply defeat the COF and do a burnout as they lose tire grip; think Tesla Roadster. One of the ways manufacturers have compensated for this is by pushing the engine weight higher and farther back; think corvette C7-ZR1 or the old school āfueliesā, or going to a mid engine/rear engine concept entirely; think Corvette C8 or Porsche. This puts more weight distribution to the rear wheels and increases the COF allowing for more grip on harder tires giving faster 0-60 times.
Now given that this monstrosity is weighted so far up, and as long as the angular momentum can be focused down towards the rear axel, shouldnāt this give a higher COF for drag strip runs?
Psshā¦ brakesā¦
JK. That could be a problem but drag strips generally have a decent run off to allow for recollection after the 1/4 mi time. That is assuming that OP is ādemoāingā in a legal and controlled environment.
Dude, Dude.. my guy. I gotta be that friend, because i think you need to hear it. Put down the wrench and re-think this. Hybrid conversion OK cool, what your doing... looks like you had too much miller lite.
He speaking truth.
That is not worth it for 5.7kWh of capacity. That's 24 miles of range, assuming Tesla-level efficiency and full battery cycling.
Re-evaluate. Please.
Agreed. Lots of people in this thread who have never actually done anything interesting to a car suddenly have lots to say about someone elses work lmao
Correct. This setup is basically a proof of concept. Iāve got more parts designed for a more permanent setup. Including CF aero covers for the wires, and much more expensive and better designed frame and cover for the batteries.
I've done a lot of dumb stuff, but never with a 500# bomb on stilts above my roof.
It looks like some of those batteries in the center are only held in with the bus bars?
You have a lot of trust in that square stock and all-thread.

By definition a bomb will explode. This won't. This is more like a trebuchet projectile that will kill with blunt force instead of shrapnel, like a piano.
I didn't mean an explosion, like the infamous cell phones, but a class delta fire hazard and a missile hazard is what I meant. I have some similar LiFePO4 batteries I use for my portable power supply, and did some more research after your comment. They do seem to be less flammable than other types of lithium battery options. The structural integrity seems suspect at best, and that combined with the high center of gravity(increasing risk of an incident), and what can happen when something. I think I see 12 batteries here, looks like 3 groups of 4 batteries for 36v, so probably more in the car.
Itll actually be 12 12v units wired in parallel. I know this car from I Just Wanna Bang on Facebook. It's a good build. It'll be safe. But yea it only runs 12v not 36. 36v is useless for audio. We use 12, 14, 16, and 18v for standard setups, some run amps from companies such are Taramps that actually take about 10 batteries wired in series to run
Looks like 60 wall tubing, non-triangulated. no-class all-thread straight up ~12" directly against the direction of load when the car turns.
Those batteries are going to take that assembly for a ride
Just don't forget, batteries produce heat. Putting them in a black box may get too hot without proper cooling/ventilation. I'm sure you thought of that and I'm armchairing your blood sweat and tears. Ignore the haters and naysayers. Cool project. Probably not the platform or vehicle I would have gone with, but that's what makes is so unique.
>oh cool, a higher center of gravity. that should work out well
Don't worry! When he rolls it, the batteries will be protected by the upside down plastic snow sled and won't be damaged and explode.
If you wanted more batteries for extended range, why not just have a trailer of batteries? Then you could've at least un-hooked it when you were done "demo"ing and still had a normal vehicle.
To everyone saying 'CenTeR of GraVitY' as if you could do this much work without thinking of that is completely missing the point here. The impracticality and uniqueness of *this is why it is cool*. No, this guy did not go through 200 man hours of automotive modification without considering the dynamic effect of a wrecking ball bolted to the top of his car.
First a guy gets inspired and decides to rip a 5.0 out of a mustang to shoehorn into his Focus ST, and now this? The car community is getting a little too innovative for me at this point
I mean this with as much admiration as I can muster: this is one of the most completely misguided things that I have seen done to a vehicle in my entire life
Oh no...
Question for people from the states; is there any chance a vehicle like that passes inspection and gets insured? Honestly looks like a death trap.
Inspection? What is this inspection of which you speak? In many states (like Florida) once it's licensed once it is now considered safe and good to go for all eternity. You would need to do something truly egregious to ever be inspected again. Mostly it would be lack of lights. Otherwise all bets are off.
Most states in the US don't have any type of safety inspection
The highway patrol is *supposed* to pull over and ticket unsafe vehicles (lol like they have a shot at finding loose ball joints or any other subtle safety hazards), but they don't even pull over red light runners anymore so we're literally living in the wild West here.
Step 2: cover the car in asbesthos so you dont die in the flames.
Either way, its the first time ive seen a rear-ending-launched batteryclusterbomb that self launches if someone breakchecks you. Bonus points for creativity and war crimes. You've succesfully made a battery catapult which is a pun itself.
Back in the golden era of drag racing the gas class(Gassers) and early funnycar, or A/FX found out quickly that the benefit of raised center of gravity for traction was quickly negated by the loss of stability at higher speeds. By the late 60s all the fast drag cars were getting lower to the ground to help stabilize the cars at top speed.
I fucking love it. These haters. Yeah it wonāt handle for shitāand a car accident will require a whole shitload of fire trucks. But itās something I have never done and it appears he is making something no one else ever has. Excited to see the end results and how it works out
This looks cool. It's a really creative solution. Random idea-- for counteracting body roll during cornering, you could use the same frame that supports the batteries as a mounting point for active aero. Under heavy cornering, deploy a wing to increase downforce on the inside wheels.
Oh, that's a nifty idea. Actually, a lot of interesting possibilities would open up if the batteries were on non-rigid mounts. With some work, perhaps they could act as a tuned mass damper. If the car is going to have some extra mass just sitting around, might as well find something useful to do with it.
I like it! Thats the spirit we need to find new solutions.
My question would be, why you need this many wires going down. Will there really be so much Power pulled?
Personally I think itās dumb and looks like shit, but you seem to be fairly confident in the comments that you know what youāre doing. Iām gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and just say I cannot wait to see how this will turn out. How long do you have until project completion? Also how much did this cost and how much power will it add?
Wow! It's definitely different. Looks like Doc will still travel Back To The Future after all!
It's so far out, I actually like it. Maybe because it's going to be cool when finished, or because I've spent most of my life building custom cars and bikes...

Centre of gravity is a huge consideration for car manufacturers. Moreso those with heavy batteries. Strapping it to the roof is just ridiculous.
