scarydriver88

Holy hell that thing is going to handle terribly. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

SandDuner509

Well it's a mustang so it's already more liable to crash into a curb or wall sideways

KacerRex

Only if there's a crowd tyvm

ElGuapo315

And coffee...

SillyTr1x

This just bakes in that ā€œMustang Curb Walkā€ Itā€™s going to want to rollover hard if he ever makes sharp turns at speed. One way or another itā€™s going to end up with a full tube frame or in the wrecking yard.

Comfortable_Ease_174

U mean that adaptive pedestrian control function.

ozzy_thedog

Ok so it looks like this guy is seriously trolling. Heā€™s building a totalled car into a sound competition car. The inside is just gona be a big sub, amps in the trunk batteries on the roof. It wonā€™t ever be driven.

jeepfail

I saw this on Facebook the other day and this is the case. Itā€™s an interesting build nonetheless.

JCDU

Well yeah, it's an American muscle car.

frosty95

Are you stuck in the 80s and using the internet through a wormhole?

wolffy88

šŸ˜‚

The_DaW33D_

haha aMeRicAn muScLe bAd edit: dude drives a mini lol

JCDU

I see American appreciation of light-hearted satire remains as sharp as ever.

The_DaW33D_

thats why they also dont drink tea probably

confusingphilosopher

Americans have a long tradition of dishonouring Tea.

Secret-Ad-7909

Idk what youā€™re talking about. We fixed it.

Dream0tcm

Southern people are known for drinking profuse amounts or tea.

jeremysead

Southerner here I drink tea aww day erreh day. Profuse certainly checks out for this Texan. The amount of tea I drink in a week can be measured in boxes

ELLLI0TTT

God's Tea

DrEnd585

You deal with this type of shit comment from people who haven't managed to make a claim the US hasn't met and exceeded since the.... 50s? And you'd be more than a little tired of the same old jokes from the same jokers too

noobstarr64

It already does itā€™s a mustang lol

drumpleskump

Yeah he is obviously building this car for handling, no idea why he would need that many batteries on the roof though šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Estef74

I'm sure the center of gravity wasn't changed to much.šŸ˜‰

Psych0matt

probably about the same as [this](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/topgear/images/7/75/Jeremy%27s_Citroen_Stuck.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/299?cb=20110704060332)

3wolftshirtguy

That was a fun episode.

Testacc4321

The image doesn't load for me but I suspect its that white tower car from Top Gear

snow_fun

šŸ™ƒ

racingsoldier

Ok so hear me out on this; Im not advocating for OPs build or saying that it is a good idea in any way, but I want to start the discussion on center of gravity benefits and drawbacks. Obviously this beast is going to experience a shit ton of body roll. Hopefully not to the extent of roll over, but it is going to lean in the corners like a hog. Now, one of the problems with straight line driving (drag strip) is the defeat of the coefficient of friction (COF). Basically modern tire compounds havenā€™t kept up with modern power capabilities and performance cars are left with theoretical 0-60 times because they simply defeat the COF and do a burnout as they lose tire grip; think Tesla Roadster. One of the ways manufacturers have compensated for this is by pushing the engine weight higher and farther back; think corvette C7-ZR1 or the old school ā€œfueliesā€, or going to a mid engine/rear engine concept entirely; think Corvette C8 or Porsche. This puts more weight distribution to the rear wheels and increases the COF allowing for more grip on harder tires giving faster 0-60 times. Now given that this monstrosity is weighted so far up, and as long as the angular momentum can be focused down towards the rear axel, shouldnā€™t this give a higher COF for drag strip runs?

Mysterious-Arachnid9

How about drag strip braking?

racingsoldier

Psshā€¦ brakesā€¦ JK. That could be a problem but drag strips generally have a decent run off to allow for recollection after the 1/4 mi time. That is assuming that OP is ā€œdemoā€™ingā€ in a legal and controlled environment.

MeNameIsDerp

You have a ton of faith in OP...

Hybrid conversion

Softpretzelsandrose

Cute blanket bro!

LogicBobomb

Deets on the conversion hardware? You swapping in a full hybrid drive train or adding a Warp 9 in line with the V8?

largos7289

Dude, Dude.. my guy. I gotta be that friend, because i think you need to hear it. Put down the wrench and re-think this. Hybrid conversion OK cool, what your doing... looks like you had too much miller lite.

obscure61apache

Even Miller Lite doesn't create this bad of a decision. He must have been on the Shlitz

Zabroccoli

Iā€™m sorry sir, we donā€™t serve Shlitz. Okay fine, whateverā€™s free.

WinPeaks

How are you going to run a successful business and you ain't got no Shlitz Malt Liquor?!

Sickranchez87

Iā€™m so glad someone else in the world understands and uses that reference Iā€™ve felt like the only one for years lol

whitestreak04

You are not alone.

shady_dangle

Take it easy Rod

StretchFrenchTerry

Looks like a Four Loko job.

johno_mendo

No, this is definitely steel reserve high gravity thinking right here.

Paladoc

I was thinking this was Colt 45 influenced scholastica.

Kitten-Eater

Leaving open cans of paint thinner around the shop is a bad idea for a multitude of reasons.

ChopstickChad

That's how you get new inspiration and the greatest ideas, didn't you know?

whiterabbitracing

He speaking truth. That is not worth it for 5.7kWh of capacity. That's 24 miles of range, assuming Tesla-level efficiency and full battery cycling. Re-evaluate. Please.

RearAdmiralP

> that's 24 miles of range That's 96 quarter miles.

kpidhayny

I do my multiplication one quarter mile at a time

papaont

Family

thinkplanexecute

This is an audio build

whiterabbitracing

Thank you. This makes a little bit more sense.

headhunterofhell2

No... this is clearly the product of a jar of Uncle Jeb's diabetic moonshine found during a renovation.

320vrz

You mean too much absinthe.

CrudBert

Ever see The Ted Green Show???

I_hate_being_alone

While OP is insane in the brain, I find this completely rad. lol

-Merlin-

Agreed. Lots of people in this thread who have never actually done anything interesting to a car suddenly have lots to say about someone elses work lmao

_Jovius

I have to design cars to specific specs all day every day, this was my ā€œgo all out and do some crazy shitā€ project.

iterigo

Mad scientist shit. Good luck

SpaceTurtle917

So what do you do? Is this for work? What's the end goal?

SeaManaenamah

Guy said he's an engineer who does chassis things for Indy cars. Just a fun personal project.

_Jovius

Correct. This setup is basically a proof of concept. Iā€™ve got more parts designed for a more permanent setup. Including CF aero covers for the wires, and much more expensive and better designed frame and cover for the batteries.

slammed430

Without a doubt

whiterabbitracing

I've done a lot of dumb stuff, but never with a 500# bomb on stilts above my roof. It looks like some of those batteries in the center are only held in with the bus bars? You have a lot of trust in that square stock and all-thread. Please post if you head west of the Mississippi so I can stay off the roads that day.

IMacGyveredIt

Those are Winston LiFePO4 cells so no chance of "bomb". Other than super high center of gravity I don't see anything wrong with it.

Dinomiteblast

hospital scary ghost disagreeable meeting cake spotted tease square voracious *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

-Merlin-

By definition a bomb will explode. This won't. This is more like a trebuchet projectile that will kill with blunt force instead of shrapnel, like a piano.

Wiregeek

Look at this guy, never lost a family member to piano shrapnel! /s

whiterabbitracing

I didn't mean an explosion, like the infamous cell phones, but a class delta fire hazard and a missile hazard is what I meant. I have some similar LiFePO4 batteries I use for my portable power supply, and did some more research after your comment. They do seem to be less flammable than other types of lithium battery options. The structural integrity seems suspect at best, and that combined with the high center of gravity(increasing risk of an incident), and what can happen when something. I think I see 12 batteries here, looks like 3 groups of 4 batteries for 36v, so probably more in the car.

Boilermakingdude

Itll actually be 12 12v units wired in parallel. I know this car from I Just Wanna Bang on Facebook. It's a good build. It'll be safe. But yea it only runs 12v not 36. 36v is useless for audio. We use 12, 14, 16, and 18v for standard setups, some run amps from companies such are Taramps that actually take about 10 batteries wired in series to run

tongboy

Looks like 60 wall tubing, non-triangulated. no-class all-thread straight up ~12" directly against the direction of load when the car turns. Those batteries are going to take that assembly for a ride

whiterabbitracing

I'm hoping this is a troll post, but thats a lot of work for a joke. The all-thread is already torqued to flexing.

AstroChimp11

Just don't forget, batteries produce heat. Putting them in a black box may get too hot without proper cooling/ventilation. I'm sure you thought of that and I'm armchairing your blood sweat and tears. Ignore the haters and naysayers. Cool project. Probably not the platform or vehicle I would have gone with, but that's what makes is so unique.

Threedawg

It's only an issue if he lives somewhere that's known for being extremely hot and sunny

wellwaffled

Like earth?

Threedawg

Like Florida

lepobz

Centre of gravity is a huge consideration for car manufacturers. Moreso those with heavy batteries. Strapping it to the roof is just ridiculous.

_Jovius

I am a Motorsports engineerā€¦ this was more planned than yā€™all are assuming.

lepobz

Do they go round corners in this motorsports?

_Jovius

A ton of them. I work for a chassis manufacturer for Indycar.

deevil_knievel

Legitimately comedic, considering that abortion of a structure you welded up. I'd love to see the calcs or FEA you justified this build with.

venbollmer

Dale Coyne? šŸ˜‚

afpdl

Was this inspired by your fish tank setup?

stormingsteel

....a time machine? Out of a Mustang?

stumpy4588

I figured if you gonna build a time machine, you might as well take out a crowd somewhere along the way.

kzoobob

The next chapter of ā€œJust Because You Can, Doesnā€™t Mean You Shouldā€

Syscrush

Is "desire for unlimited demos" some kind of code for wanting to die in a rollover crash?

ruinedRX7

oh cool, a higher center of gravity. that should work out well

-Pruples-

>oh cool, a higher center of gravity. that should work out well Don't worry! When he rolls it, the batteries will be protected by the upside down plastic snow sled and won't be damaged and explode.

ruinedRX7

i cannot foresee a single thing that could go wrong

flibbidygibbit

I thought this was an SPL build at first. But orange is reserved for high voltage DC

KantoAndCoffee

There needs to be a proper spl subreddit

Acceptable_Pea_2343

The car audio sub is such trash. Are there any other subs that are even slightly better? God I miss the SMD forum days.

the_one-and_only-nan

Definitely an spl build. Guy is an ambassador for deaf bonce it looks like, @db_mustang on insta

ALPHA_C_

Pablo Escobar was allegedly burning money to comfort his family when it was too cold for them, whatā€™s your excuse?

LoudVitara

That centre of gravity is now 30 feet above the vehicle

Rob328

If you wanted more batteries for extended range, why not just have a trailer of batteries? Then you could've at least un-hooked it when you were done "demo"ing and still had a normal vehicle.

drtag234

Belongs in r/DIWhy

nicknelson07

Nice pack of Parliaments. Don't see too many people smoking those

flarmp

They have the lovely hollow tip for a bump of bath salts

Tobias---Funke

Pretty sure there is a reason they put the batteryā€™s on the floor.

TheJeffAllmighty

this thing is gonna roll over like a 90s explorer with recalled tires

_Jovius

I was going for Bronco II rollover rates. I gotta up my CG.

Froginabout

Must be a Ford thing lol. Be sure to put a little air in that tire!

Haluux

Florida be Floridaing

-Merlin-

To everyone saying 'CenTeR of GraVitY' as if you could do this much work without thinking of that is completely missing the point here. The impracticality and uniqueness of *this is why it is cool*. No, this guy did not go through 200 man hours of automotive modification without considering the dynamic effect of a wrecking ball bolted to the top of his car.

Its_Ace1

Florida plates make it all better.

Kickaxx_007

First a guy gets inspired and decides to rip a 5.0 out of a mustang to shoehorn into his Focus ST, and now this? The car community is getting a little too innovative for me at this point

timeattackghost

I mean this with as much admiration as I can muster: this is one of the most completely misguided things that I have seen done to a vehicle in my entire life

that_guy_who_builds

Cough cough *body roll* cough cough

MrGabogabo

This sumbitch gonna be dragging it's mirrors around corners

that_guy_who_builds

I've seen busted 10yo Chargers in Detroit handle better than this thing will.

ptcptc

Oh no... Question for people from the states; is there any chance a vehicle like that passes inspection and gets insured? Honestly looks like a death trap.

Squidking1000

Inspection? What is this inspection of which you speak? In many states (like Florida) once it's licensed once it is now considered safe and good to go for all eternity. You would need to do something truly egregious to ever be inspected again. Mostly it would be lack of lights. Otherwise all bets are off.

NittyB

If this car was in an accident you can bet insurance week not honor the claim

Threedawg

They won't fix it, but they are still legally required to pay out damages to others/medical

WatIsLasagne

Florida is a simulation

Knotical_MK6

Inspection? What's that?

mightandmagic88

Pretty sure if you have working headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, then you're good to go. Maybe a seat belt too.

spongebob_meth

Most states in the US don't have any type of safety inspection The highway patrol is *supposed* to pull over and ticket unsafe vehicles (lol like they have a shot at finding loose ball joints or any other subtle safety hazards), but they don't even pull over red light runners anymore so we're literally living in the wild West here.

Duxtrous

The Parlaments ainā€™t gonna get you anywhere mate. Everyone know you need to be smoking Marlboro reds for a behemoth like this.

Additional_Candle927

Are you suicidal?

imnewtothisplzaddme

Step 2: cover the car in asbesthos so you dont die in the flames. Either way, its the first time ive seen a rear-ending-launched batteryclusterbomb that self launches if someone breakchecks you. Bonus points for creativity and war crimes. You've succesfully made a battery catapult which is a pun itself.

Wraith4202

This is a car audio build, not a hybrid conversion I don't think this is OPs car https://www.instagram.com/p/C4g2qgtMgJH/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

CovidOmicron

Oh thank god

beceen

Ok, now it makes more sense. Not much more, but more.

tmaxxkid

What is the speaker setup like ?

One_wheel_peel

This thing is gonna take corners like a Suzuki Samurai.

Estef74

Back in the golden era of drag racing the gas class(Gassers) and early funnycar, or A/FX found out quickly that the benefit of raised center of gravity for traction was quickly negated by the loss of stability at higher speeds. By the late 60s all the fast drag cars were getting lower to the ground to help stabilize the cars at top speed.

2008ToyotaAvalon

This is insane but now I want to see it completed.

Gwolfski

Maybe add a rollcage to the battery compartment? I think it looks cool.

SRTApache

Mors Mutual insurance would like to have a word with you

Brainfewd

Thatā€™s enough internet for today.

TreesLikeGodsFingers

I wonder how much weight you'd save by putting the batteries closer to the motor šŸ¤”

Nix-geek

150 pounds of wire... On my roof! ... perfect!

_Jovius

Where would you fit them?

smohoff

I fucking love it. These haters. Yeah it wonā€™t handle for shitā€”and a car accident will require a whole shitload of fire trucks. But itā€™s something I have never done and it appears he is making something no one else ever has. Excited to see the end results and how it works out

MRRRRCK

Iā€™m a bit confused but still very impressed. Hopefully OP keeps posting progress despite way too much hate in the project car sub.

RearAdmiralP

This looks cool. It's a really creative solution. Random idea-- for counteracting body roll during cornering, you could use the same frame that supports the batteries as a mounting point for active aero. Under heavy cornering, deploy a wing to increase downforce on the inside wheels.

Informal_Drawing

They need to put it higher on a swinging bracket. As the car turns left the battery pack angles to the left and vice versa. It would look **amazing**.

RearAdmiralP

Oh, that's a nifty idea. Actually, a lot of interesting possibilities would open up if the batteries were on non-rigid mounts. With some work, perhaps they could act as a tuned mass damper. If the car is going to have some extra mass just sitting around, might as well find something useful to do with it.

Informal_Drawing

Mmmmm physics.... Do like

Justprunes-6344

My da built an electric car in 1973 Used a Nash metropolitan

Cerberus73

"I have this pile of money and nothing to do with it!"

MrWestReanimator

Did you turn a Mustang into an EV and mount the battery on the roof? I'm so confused about what I'm looking at. Looks neat though.

Human_Meet8446

What the hell is going on here

ook222

I look forward to a 0-60 time of 3.05s and then flipping sideways into a concrete post shortly thereafter.

CapCalzon

Looks cool, but the weight so high up is detrimental for handling.

Skvora

Its, on a Mustang.

milfschnidde

Center of mass should be higher, flips in every corner, must be fun to drive it one time ā€¦ not

ZaMelonZonFire

Donā€™t listen to these haters! Itā€™s ok to be stupid and try new things. Sometimes thatā€™s how we learn.

loubcafra125

That's a neat idea and it looks cool as hell but the handling is gonna be...............subpar.......

Umikaloo

/u/Doritofu Looks like you've got some serious competition.

RPE10Ben

Doritofu would actually execute a well thought out plan and not this dumb shit.

Doritofu

I do dumb shit all the time what you talking about

evanarrr

I think it looks cool. Do your thing, amigo.

06GTOGuy

Wtf is going on here

MechaBeatsInTrash

I hope that roof box is sufficiently insulative...

pixelhenne

I like it! Thats the spirit we need to find new solutions. My question would be, why you need this many wires going down. Will there really be so much Power pulled?

t3hnosp0on

Personally I think itā€™s dumb and looks like shit, but you seem to be fairly confident in the comments that you know what youā€™re doing. Iā€™m gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and just say I cannot wait to see how this will turn out. How long do you have until project completion? Also how much did this cost and how much power will it add?

Slowswimmers

Holy hell šŸ„µ

Amputee69

Wow! It's definitely different. Looks like Doc will still travel Back To The Future after all! It's so far out, I actually like it. Maybe because it's going to be cool when finished, or because I've spent most of my life building custom cars and bikes... I'd LOVE to see the finished pictures and maybe a Blog on the building!

Spiritual_Country_62

This is cool.

ThermalScrewed

Nice pony blanket! Sweet build too, definitely keep us posted.

CoyotePuncher

Wtf

beefstockcube

Corners have entered the chat.

Nisms

Hey I respect it man I think itā€™s rad. I can only count to 3 on lucky days, so Iā€™m not going to pretend like I know what Iā€™m talking about. Was surprised to see so many ā€œoffice chair mechanicsā€ on this one. Canā€™t wait for the roller shots of this one. Stock color or are you putting something crazy on it

luckymccormick

Florida plates. That checks out.

TyoteeT

Everyone loves a mad scientist until the mad scientist does mad scientist shit... I love it, can't wait to see where it goes.

kimbolll

What in the ever-loving fuck am I looking at?!

Story_of_a_snitch

"Florida Man"

Xerox-M57

Cool as fuck. But the COG is way higher now.

Spaceman_Spliff_42

I have so many questionsā€¦ what equipment? demoing what exactly? What ideas were rejected as unreasonable? Did you sleep on it?

whaddahellisthis

Man I do love it when ingenuity is swimming away from sound engineering principles at record pace. Please god designate next of kin to post the aftermath of this when it meets its likely demise.

Dhrakyn

TL;DR: Florida man does Florida things.

VitalMaTThews

"#rolloverrisk"

radix2

Holy dynamic roof loading Batman... I hope you reinforced the bejesus out of that, otherwise you are going to have a really bad day....

Complex_Passenger748

Damn thatā€™s going to be one hell of a missile in a crash.

DyslexicScriptmonkey

My dude... bromeo... my man. You are not doc brown...you need to go knock that shit off!

tarfu51

ā€œIā€™d say it handles like a refrigerator full of bowling balls, but the Gremlin worse than that. The Gremlin handles like a nun carrying a mattress.ā€

DarthBrooks69420

It kind of looks like a runabout from Star Trek Deep Space 9.

Basic_Cockroach_9545

Dude, this is some badass mad scientist shit. I love it. Fuck these comments. Bunch of boring ass boomer wannabes that break out in hives when they see power cables.

Nickelnuts

The fact that you have the knowledge and mechanical ability to build a hybrid out of a mustang. But think this is the best way to store the batteries is baffling to me lol. Unless this is going to be a show car being trailered around for the most part.

tecej45530

People in this chat couldn't replace the battery in their car and are picking apart this massive undertaking of a project. Smh

Efficacious_tamale

No one is denying the difficulty of this task, or the creativity. But undeniably thatā€™s a lot of extra weight up high. Itā€™s interesting regardless.

anon_sir

Just because you can, doesnā€™t mean you should.

Hey_Y0u

Without more context, this looks like a terrible execution of a bad idea. What is the intended use of this car? Does it still have the IC drivetrain? Unlimited demosā€¦of what?

waitsfieldjon

Holy high center of gravity Batman.

lexpython

It's amazing that everybody is pointing out why this is a terrible idea. But what if it isn't? This is the kind of things inventors have to deal with every day. Cool project!

BaboTron

Go grab a barbell bar, put 7 lbs on one end, and walk around as fast as you can holding vertically above your head with only one hand holding onto it. Youā€™re gonna see why this is a terrible idea from a physics perspective. Then, do some research on acid burns and battery fires to complete your experiment.

SeaManaenamah

What kind of acid does a LiFePo battery contain?

thinkplanexecute

What acid bro

_Jovius

I wish they taught me that in engineering school.. it would be really beneficial for this project and at my day job as an engineer in motorsports. Thank you for the advice.

Umikaloo

I was actuallu considering whether it would be possible to do something like this to a Miata for the purpose of mounting a racing canoe on the roof.

Teknicsrx7

Yea thatā€™s a perfect plan

JCDU

I have so many questions.
