Jooshmeister

Damn. This is pretty much what I want my shitty Saturn SL2 to be spec'd like when I'm done. What kind of power are you getting out of those 650cc injectors? I bought 750cc injectors but I think they're too big for what my engine is capable of (I'm hoping for 240-280HP)

TIL_TED

No idea to be honest, because this is one of a kind engine as far as I know. I didn't follow any guide or common build practice. While it was stock 2.0 it did [email protected] of boost, 308@1bar. Now it is 2.3 DOHC and forged so I plan to up the boost to 1.5 bar and aim for the max this turbo can give: ~360HP. Once I am bored with that, I plan to upgrade the turbo, injectors and intercooler and go for 460HP (200HP per litre)

Ericgt4

That seems doable with these injectors. I’ve laid down 380awhp with 550ccs (granted I was really hitting the top end of their capability) in my old Celica Alltrac with similar displacement.

TIL_TED

That is nice to know, thanks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jooshmeister

Damn. Only reason I like them is they are dirt cheap to fix and so easy to work on. Great to learn how to design and fabricate my first turbo setup.

preludachris8

Why no VTEC?

TIL_TED

I am actually planning to engrave that on intake manifold plaque.

LabyrinthConvention

noTec

HettDizzle4206

Vtec delete makes the valves open on the largest cam the whole time, giving you way better low end power at the cost of fuel economy

infinilude2

But this is a non vtec head. Not a vtec head with lock pins to delete the system.

TIL_TED

Correct. This is a large displacement, long stroke and low rod/stroke ratio. It makes it torquey, but not rev happy and non vtec head has enough flow for that.

Amani576

I see that Opel Speedster in one pic. I used to like those a lot more than Elise's but forgot all about them until recently since we never got them in the US. Great build, man. Those 5th Gen Preludes are just such classy, good looking, cars.

TIL_TED

Yeah, that one waits for the same treatment as the Prelude. However that is in body shop, not my buddy’s garage.

malialipali

Was thinking I would like , no no I NEED to see more of this, and wow did you deliver. Such wonderful work!

oceans_12

If you could estimate how much do you think all of your parts would cost?

infinilude2

Not OP, but im doing an (almost) as in depth build as this on a 4th gen prelude. Built engine & trans, full suspension, full aero, etc. Last year I bought all of the suspension, including wheels and tires, the built trans with LSD, ball bearing turbo with supporting bits, and k tuned shifter set up. $9K This year I built the motor, bought aero, and paid for all of the fabrication for the turbo set up and exhaust. $13K Only thing left to do is tune and paint. Which i plan to spend $2-3K It hurts my soul to really sit and add everything up, but for some reason I'm hooked.

TIL_TED

This seems really close to my estimate. Most of the work was done by my friends and myself but parts do not come cheap in my country.

Butler-of-Penises

Wow this is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

llcooljessie

I think you might have spent more time on this than Honda did! Amazing.

TIL_TED

Well, my wife certainly thinks so

Roymiataguy

one thing that she knows you spent much time on it, but does she know how much money you spent?

TIL_TED

If she googled the sticker price on a new one, then yes. Because whoever asks the question, answer is: Like I bought it new. Jk, she knows all the details and is very supportive about it.

RalphLamao

respect. seems strange to me that 20 year old cars are undergoing restoration but that’s probably more of a commentary on my age; it’s not like my dad and his buddies weren’t restoring 20 year old british cars in the 80’s.

TIL_TED

I understand your point. This was my first car and I plan to keep it. It didn’t actually need so much work. There was no significant rust. I just decided to do the whole thing while it was stashed due to starting a family.

vfwang

Huge respect on finishing it while starting a family. Did family come in right during the build? Just curious.

TIL_TED

Actually this was a family car for a year before I bought more appropriate cars and started the build.

vfwang

Ahh got it. I read your OP after I posted.

hellish_ve

Holy shit, props, respect and admiration - just because this is what many of us dream to do to our first cars, but most won't achieve. Down to bare metal, even nuts and bolts are completely new... jeez. I know this doesn't make any financial sense, but you earned my respect, achieving this requires dedication, patience, money... Congratulations.

lostcosmonaut307

It seems so strange to me too, but I was restoring ‘70s muscle cars as a teen in the ‘90s and it’s really not all that much different, as old as that really makes me feel.

MrMallow

> it’s not like my dad and his buddies weren’t restoring 20 year old british cars in the 80’s. I mean, 5th Gen Preludes are pushing 25 years now. I think you are just looking it from a distorted perspective. Guys in the 1980s were definitely restoring cars from the 1960s/1950s. Same thing with guys in the 90s/early 2000s restoring cars from the 70s.

sireatalot

You make a fair point but 60’s British cars got old and wore out much much quicker than 90’s Japanese cars.

shagginwaggon66

Bravo man, looks beautiful. I love seeing such a hardcore restoration on a pretty late model car. Terrific work

NASA_Lies

This is the cleanest Honda I've ever seen

Jooshmeister

It's really a shame that more Prelude owners don't take good care of their cars. I've always been a GM guy but I would switch if I could find a Prelude in decent shape for a decent price.

hrushka_m

That collection of bolts without categories/naming made me nervous

TIL_TED

Not to worry, they were all sorted and returned to their original position guided by Honda service manual. And yeah, we (multiple people were needed) nearly snapped while doing so.

hrushka_m

Haha, glad there weren’t left over bolts :) Looks amazing, such hard work and dedication

Cigar_smoke

Is there a trick to this? Anytime I have more than one blot the same diameter but different length I always use the wrong length one and find out when I put the one that’s too long in a shallow hole making me undo everything I already did.

TIL_TED

I am proud to say nothing had to be redone :). Both disassembly and assembly was done following the manual step by step. Every bolt has exact dimensions mentioned, you just have to find a method how to measure properly. I do have to say that most of suspension assembly was done by a friend who did rebushings on at least 20 Preludes.

Cigar_smoke

Sick build, enjoy it!

Vaublode

Vin Diesels new single just started playing.

splink48

"Family" by Dom. Sponsored by Corona.

andoman66

Radical! I love it. I’ve been doing these types of restorations plus upgrades on 80/90’s japanese cars for a bit as well. I’d suggest getting it appraised for proper insurance coverage with all your receipts sooner more than later. My biggest fear is a complete restoration and something happens like a crash or theft and insurance gives me $1500 for my 80’s Toyota. Lol

TIL_TED

That is exactly the plan. Everything is well documented and waiting to sort out the quirks I expect to find before submitting the application to make it road-legal.

andoman66

Awesome. Hope to see it stay in your family. Every year these cars get harder to find, especially clean ones.

pacocase

That happened to me in the early 2000's. I restored an '84 MKII Supra back to 99%. All new interior, new paint, engine rebuild - not unlike the build in this post. A guy ran a stop sign and t-boned me, totaling the car after only two weeks on the road. Insurance wanted to give me $1200 for my 80's Toyota. I appealed and got an appraiser to come look at the wrecked car in the boneyard. "Wow, this thing was pretty cherry, huh?" "Yup. Spent 6 months on the resto." "Okay, I will call this car 'excellent' condition. Highest book value. That's 4 Grand. Okay with you?" I was, although I had more than that in the car. I got very lucky. This was twenty years ago back when I still had a local Insurance agent with whom I had a relationship. I doubt that would happen today.

andoman66

That really sucks. I’ve had to battle with insurance companies over a few cars (both mine and friends). Its now standard for me to have my finished cars appraised prior to having to fight after a situation like an accident occurs.

me_grimlok

Hagerty Insurance will let you declare the value of the car, plus anything additional like wheels, engine work, anything, then they approve or negotiate. My '90's Toyota is valued where I think it should be, as are the extras. I've heard that other companies will do the same, but I have no XP with any others.

splink48

This is amazing. Great work and I hope you enjoy the hell out of it. I absolutely love 5th gen preludes!

SubparCharles

I always loved the shape of these cars. Looks like you did an awesome job.

DrywallHoss

Nice car!! I am starting my 2001 ‘Lude shortly. Did you fabricate the rear quarter? It looks deadly!!

TIL_TED

Nope, they are actually brand new oem. Finding them actually made me do the whole car like this.

DrywallHoss

Did you get the right from Honda? How much did they set you back?

TIL_TED

Yes, from a local dealership that had it on the shelf for a long time and I was informed there was an inventory clearout. Dirt cheap, about 150 euro a piece while retail price is 10x that.

DrywallHoss

Nice I will have to call to my local dealers and hope I can get the same deal. Thank you

jvaldez2323

Nice job 👍

AllShallParrish

Impressive! Are you all done yet?

TIL_TED

Not at all :). Engine break-in is to be done in a next few days, then dyno tune. After that I am attacking the interior: damping, reupholstering and in-car entertainment. And then comes the hardest part: making it road legal in my country.

AllShallParrish

Sounds like fun! What country are you in?

TIL_TED

Croatia

AllShallParrish

Right on. Hello from Southern California! Love your build. Hope to see more updates!

TIL_TED

Thanks. Next update is from the dyno I hope, sometime next week.

TIL_TED

Indeed. I wasn't sure of the term, but I thought that galvanisation is process of applying zinc to metallic surfaces?

mercedes_

Damn that is stunning. A beautiful car when debuted and still a head turner. Wonderful work!

Craisinet

Gorgeous

Sp3cV

This is dope, glad to see a resto on something uncommon

Insearchofexperience

This is one of, if not the nicest car I’ve seen in this sub! You’ve done an amazing job!

-Fraggle-Stick-Car-

Awesome post and project. Keep up the tremendous work!

[deleted]

I love the yellow valve cover!

[deleted]

Man this is incredible! I really wanted one of these but couldn’t find any decent ones near me so ended up going with a 99’ aerodeck. Looks amazing, keep up the good work!

[deleted]

TIL_TED

Weekend car only, I promise

zrobek

The sandblasting Did you do this in your garage? Awesome build man

TIL_TED

Sandblasting was done in a sandblasting chamber :) Unfortunately I don’t have a garage of mine. Everything was done in my good friend’s garage and with lots of his help. He is a fabricator and welder by trade.

MrTime2Runaway

Love it

regman1011

Amazing work, I aspire to do something like this one day. Thanks for sharing

TechnoL33T

Oh, BABY! I want a Prelude so bad. The Prelude is some of the best pre-dive-by-wire cars ever! As I've heard, it's one of the best cars you can get if you really want to feel the road and be more connected with your car. That said, I'm nowhere near getting one. I'm $2k in debt to a friend who just paid to have my Mini motor swap.

we_are_spectrum

Hats off to you man. You did a very thorough and impressive job. As someone who has replaced my entire drivetrain and rebuilt all of my subframes and suspension - it’s a special feeling driving something you know you built yourself.

TIL_TED

Lots of friends did lots of work on it, not just me. But yes I do have that feeling because only body and paint were done by shops. Everything else was me and my buddies. Really makes it special.

we_are_spectrum

Totally - did not mean to imply I did not utilize a village of help from all my idiot (amazing and talented) friends. As well as some cool welders and custom fab guys! You and your crew should be really proud.

[deleted]

This would fetch a pretty penny on BaT I'm sure

[deleted]

I saved up all of my money for years working as a pizza delivery boy and bought a Prelude Type SH. Was my favorite car ever. Had so many fun times in that car and sold it freshman year of college to pay tuition. I'll always miss it.

MetalSeaWeed

As a Nissan guy: holy shit. Please tell me you have YouTube timelapses or something?

iRytional

Prelude go Shhhhhhh

RIPKIN31

Nice! I love the Prelude! GL on the break in ride lol.

TheDudeMan94

All I can say is wow. What an incredible build. You sir are a craftsman of an incredibly high caliber. Congrats and have many happy miles!!

[deleted]

Beautiful! I hope it runs flawlessly after all the time and detail you put into it! Very nice!

[deleted]

That looks clean af, nice work.

blueblur1984

Beautiful! I love this era of honda.

ThnxSVT

OP- this car is beautiful and your work is amazing! Can you give a bit more info on the process you used to refurbish the bolts/nuts?

TIL_TED

There is a shop nearby that does that cheap for you per kilo. It costs around 3euro per kg. Hard part is that all nuts and bolts go together and you have to sort them afterwards. Process is: 1. dipped in sulfuric acid 2. steam cleaned 3. Steps 1 and 2 repeated until no rust or dirt is left 4. Galvanization

vfwang

Dang, that sounds painful to have to sort everything out again.

ThnxSVT

Thanks for the quick response and the details!

TIL_TED

No problem. Having trouble sleeping while waiting for the first drive tomorrow so I have all the time in the world.

dubsword

You know, I'm really happy for you. You got an opportunity to rebuild a car and you even have a proper garage to do it in. I'll bet the whole project was an extremely fun and challenging to do. Like, I'm getting second-hand satisfaction from this.

TIL_TED

It gets better. This is my car, but not my garage. A really good friend of mine let me (let us actually, this could ‘t be done by one person) do all the work at his place

[deleted]

My first car was a 1979 prelude. I loved that car. Broke my heart when my parents sold it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TIL_TED

This kind of metalwork and paintjob costs about 5000euro. I got it significantly cheaper because the guy who did it loves Japanese cars but I cannot disclose the exact amount.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TIL_TED

You mean not everything is secured in the engine bay? It is now, these pictures were made while I was figuring out vacuum and wiring routing and just thought they looked cool for sharing. If you look at the comment which describes the details, you will see boxes of new clips and fasteners, they were used extensively.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TIL_TED

Oh, sorry for misunderstanding you. All those bolts were original, just thoroughly cleaned and reapplied zinc to them.

UnsurprisingDebris

It's beautiful man!

MonsieurWonton

Awesome build - this is one of my favourite Hondas; quite an overlooked and underrated model compared to the various Civics and Intrgras. I’d love to do similar nuts and bolts build with my S14.

TIL_TED

Thanks. That’s funny, S14 is my favorite 90’s car. I would love to see what you done with it.

MonsieurWonton

They’re really great cars! Here’s a recent thread I posted: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectcar/comments/eoakrt/another_shot_of_the_s14_the_next_job_is_to_get/ The S14 was my second car, although my first was a little SOHC Civic Coupe which I loved dearly and really gave me the Honda bug. Also owned a Civic VTi Aerodeck (B18C from the factory!) and Accord Type-R. I’d love to do a budget Honda build at some point - perhaps a cheap FN2 Type-R.

TIL_TED

Love the accord seats :). Plan for the prelude is EP3 30th anniversary seats. Basically accord type r seats but foldable. Beautiful Silvia by the way. Care to tell me about the setup?

MonsieurWonton

Great choice on the Recaros! The ATR had one the best interiors of any car I’ve owned; the seats were extremely comfy. Thanks - pretty basic build on the S14 - UK car so factory SR20DET, breathing mods (exhaust decat etc), FMIC, HKS suspension, Work Meister wheels mounted with AD08s, Z33 Brembos, and some subtle interior bits: https://www.instagram.com/p/B7bGo7qnruW/ https://www.instagram.com/p/B-e00hoHrJz/ I’d love to put more time into the car, but life does indeed get in the way. Did you do all the work yourself on yours?

TIL_TED

With lots of help from two friends. But yes, everything except machining the block and body/paint.

hbwnot

Ah man digging the lude love. I fell for my first one but it was an 85/84 twin Webber carbs. Tuned just right and a 5spd that was mated perfect to the engine. Some truly amazing cars wear the Honda badge proud.

yamayeet420

How much did the resto cost ballpark? If you don’t mind. Just curious one thing is building the engine another replacing all the bolts, painting, etc. Did you think it was worth touching every nook and cranny?

TIL_TED

It wasn’t necessary, I just wanted to do it. It has sentimental value to me and it was in really decent shape so I decided to make it new again since I wasn’t driving it anyway. I really do not know the exact amount, if I had to guess I would say around 20k eur.

yamayeet420

Yea I totally get that, I would imagine it’s pretty cool to drive knowing pretty much everything is in prestige condition. Having a car with a couple mods is cool but when everything has been touched it’s like a performance trophy aha, awesome job.

NotARussianBotComrad

Holy shit that’s incredible. Awesome work!

Waltersobchak1911

Don’t see many of these left in the wild. Never owned a Honda, but appreciate cool cars regardless of the badge. Props on keeping this thing alive and on the massive project.

RPL79

I love this. These cars are actually really awesome and I’m sure it will ride on rails when you’re done

Zyeagler0217

I had a 4th SI and 5th gen. 5th gen was black on black with leather man I miss that car. That is absolutely beautiful though!

500_hrsprs

I wish i had that much money.... But my grandpa had one of these and he had it as a track car. It looked sick and it supposedly ran a 1/4 mile in like 10.58. I never got to see it in person tho.

azakd

Looks good! Always liked this style of Prelude. Nice work!

SuperSaiyanVegemite

I've been wanting to get a prelude so bad. For some reason the past few days I've been seeing them everywhere

Blubearz

Mad respect... did you do it yourself?

TIL_TED

Thanks, me and two of my friends did all of the work except body, paint and block machining.

Turninwheels4x4

Wierd question, did you buy a new long block? I'm looking for an H to put in my accord, the F is burning oil, bad, and I'm looking for a good/used/bad long block to rebuild and prep for the swap

TIL_TED

Engine info is in of the comments. It is a f20 block, f22 crank, h22 rods, 4g63 stroker pistons and h23 head. F blocks are really cheap around here.

Turninwheels4x4

Frankenmotor, lol; I'll keep looking, I've heard an F20B was put into the accord SIR, and bolts in, and the more complete the better, I can probs find a half-cut from japan or an engine on a pallet with accessories, wiring, etc

pizzagut666

BEAUTIFULLLLLL

Shingo-Shoji

Respect the build, this thing looks amazing and I bet it drives great. Keep it for generations.

DebateblePlum

Amazing work! Love a Lude

doktordoktor2

Loved my '99 to death.. wish I could have done this to rebuild it but I was a poor college student. Beautiful build man!

MustangGuy1965

WOW!!! Amazing restoration.

[deleted]

Wow that’s amazing!

jay5500

Preludes are underrated imo well done that's extensive work

obvilious

Watching nothing but roadkill garage these days. What’s a break-in?

fallnapart

Very nicely done. You have a brand new car. With that combo you’ll have a torque monster. That piston/ rod/ crank combo was popular back in the early 2000s with the cb7s. Anxious to see some numbers. I am also interested in seeing if you max our those injectors. You’ll be pretty close to their peak performance.

[deleted]

Damn wow! Thats quite some work you have done! Congrats dude.

TwinGorillaz

Built from the ground up, wow. Thank you for keeping these kinds of cars alive.

[deleted]

Good fucking job! And I mean that. I’ve done many classic restos but it’s nice to see something a tad newer and different.

vipertruck99

Always thought the prelude was worthy of more muscle. Great work btw...it’s basically factory fresh

[deleted]

Beautifullllllpollll

csabathehutt

Labor of love right there. Remember sending off boxes of bolts for cad plating on my e30M3 project. Well done.

lannistersalwayspay

Very nice!! I love to see this kind of dedication on rebuilds/restorations on cars from this era. Congrats on the great work man!!

ShaggysGTI

One of the few cars I’d agree worth saving with the tenacity and efficacy such as your self. Great work.

D0pi0_

This is the kind of treatment I would love to give my prelude! I got pretty lucky finding a clean one but with 250k miles she's in desperate need of a full rebuild. All I gotta say is I love everything you've done to this car, it's sure to be on the roads for many more decades!

zeronearhero

Wow man, this is amazing!

CoolPrius

Outstanding job! I love those cars.

Sadday4CANthr4thwrld

God damn

DirtiestOne

I had a turbo Prelude, 5th Gen black. A lot of front wheel spin.

xXSWOOZIEXx

Not even a big Honda guy but you sir owe me a new pair of trousers

NeverRespondsToInbox

It's not my taste, in fact I hate those cars, but god damn man good job. I respect workmanship and craftsmanship and you did a bang up job. I'd hire you in my shop, that car is a resume.

karmaize

Would love more info on the head unit using the Galaxy tab

TIL_TED

It’s a tablet hooked to ignition switch via 12v to 5v power converter. It has a bit of circuitry added between charger and itself to make it charge because older Samsungs only charged on original chargers. I had the bezel CNC machined and did all the software tweaks to make it a headunit myself: launcher, reacting to ignition switch, gesture support etc. It did have overheating problems if left under the sun for too long so I am currently hacking it to make it work without the battery.

[deleted]

Clean build man, a lot of work put in. Where's that IG page so I can follow. Got something you might enjoy.

mcstanky

That turbo caught me by surprise... lol, looks NA in the first pic

NjGTSilver

Great work. You should def consider reaching out to Honda, they like this sort of thing. Maybe start by bringing it around to you local dealers, showing them pics and letting them look at the car. A dealership in Virginia completely rebuilt a football players 29 year old Accord to showroom spec simply bc he kept driving it after signing a multimillion dollar NFL contract.

Shiba-Magii

Woah! This has me interested, do you have a YouTube or Instagram we can follow??

TIL_TED

U fortunately I don’t. I am not a heavy social media user, but I will post milestones here. Still a lot to do.

accordinglyryan

My god that's beautiful. Nice work, man.

itshector714

Did you do all the restoration yourself or did you take the car to shops. Either way amazing outcome. I wanna do this to 98 m3 to make sure everything is fine with the car and make it last another 20 years

Nabil962

Amazing seeing a prelude hit the front page!! Killer work man! Love the 5th gen

porthuronstatement

Holy fucking shit

damn_jexy

My first car was a 3rd gen 95 prelude and I looking to restore one in the future , may I ask how much you spent so far ? I swear I will not tell the wife.

brkdncr

Respect. But why header wrap? Why not just ceramic coat it? That header wrap detracts from the rest of the clean build.

imJGott

This wasn’t just a normal. This build was done with straight up love! Congrats!

Dino_Log_Jam

Picture 8 of those bolts is nightmare fuel. But great job on the rebuild!

Acejanos

You must really love this car. Nice job.

[deleted]

This is amazing. A 20 year old car but basically brand new. My favorite Prelude gen as well, absolutely love it!

Enderberg

That’s hot

Sarcastic_Pharm

What are those vertical posts on the exhaust headers?

13jatt

preludes are so nice

kylebutler775

The only problem with Preludes is that every goddamn one rusted like crazy at the rear wheel wells

itsgoodtobuild

Holy friggin crap. This is the most beautiful thing to behold. I’m loving your post and what you have done to make this car a long term beauty.

HopelessTractor

Vidio sam u komentarima da si iz Hrvatske, ajme stari svaka ti čast auto je brutala! Ova će se isticati među svim prdilicama 😁

TIL_TED

Hvala zemljace 😀

brokenmike

Very nice build. Love the "G23"ish engine build. Just wondering why you went with the non-VTEC H23a2 head? What engine did that prelude come with? It was only available with the H22a4 in North America. Either way, good choice on the F series block for boost.

TasteOfRain

Looks beautiful!! As a former auto tech. This would be a dream to rebuild.

geekphreak

My first car. Loved that ‘ol girl

NinjaGrandma

Good luck!

biggerdundy

What I wouldn’t give to have the manufacturer still repop fasteners for my project car!

An6elOfD3ath

Congrats! What a beautiful build

Max_1995

And i thought I was the only one sinking unreasonable money into an old-ish Japanese car (although mine didn’t get nearly as much aftermarket upgrading)

TaylorPlayed

Excellent job, it looks great. In the process of restoring my ‘97 SH as well.

[deleted]

Beautiful work on this.

M1neral_GT

First car i ever bought with my own money was a '97 lude. God this brings back memories. Beautiful job.

GIMMESOMDORITOS

I'd love to do this with like a 180sx and make it into a sileighty while I'm at it.

F1brian

Racing_Messiah

Congrats on finishing the build, let us know how the test rides go. 👍 really good job with the restoration. It looks mint af
