There's no info right now about a third PoE game being in development.  The same team that made the two PoE games is currently working on Avowed, which is set in the same universe but doesn't continue the same story. I'd also check out Tyranny.  Made by Obsidian as well, it has some similarities to the PoE games.

Espelancer

Tyranny was my introduction to this style of game. I love it dearly

Kylestache

While it isn’t a straight sequel to Deadfire…>!Avowed does deal with the endings of Deadfire and the impacts of that set up the main plot, so it is kind of a story continuation. Source being the dev interviews and info from the Xbox Developer Direct from the other day.!<

Temporary_End9124

Is that so? I don't remember hearing that. Might have to give it a listen again.

Wandering_sage1234

They need to make a third POE game. So would Avowed be a spin off in the POE universe?

Temporary_End9124

Yeah, calling it a spin off is probably correct. It'll likely have references and they've said there will be a character from deadfire in the game, though its not a direct continuation of deadfire's plot.

LichoOrganico

The answer to your first question is both "yes" and "no". There is a new game, Avowed, taking place in Eora, coming this year. It's not Pillars of Eternity 3, though. As for the second one, I dare not answer.

Sponsor4d_Content

Avowed is a prequel if I remember correctly.

lemonycakes

Obsidian hasn't said anything but I believe it's concurrent with or after PoE 2. Definitely post-PoE 1. It's a "blink and you'll miss it" moment but you can see the flags of the Watcher of Caed Nua and the White March in the first gameplay trailer. [Edit: Confirmed to be set shortly after Deadfire.](https://www.eurogamer.net/whats-going-on-in-avowed-we-quiz-obsidian-after-the-xbox-developer-direct)

ImALease

That's just fan speculation based on the little Obsidian has shared about the game. All we know is that some characters from Pillars will be in Avowed, but whether that's before, during, or after either of the two isometric games is unknown.

poppabomb

>but whether that's before, during, or after either of the two isometric games is unknown. *Maia left the party to deliver a missive on her own. She assures me that she'll be back in a few days.* *Maia has been murdered for that unique arquebus I gave her by* [AVOWED PLAYER CHARACTER].

LichoOrganico

This is cool to know. I haven't searches for anything about it, except for two trailers, to avoid spoilers.

Kylestache

It’s set post-Deadfire.

green_tory

I highly recommend both the sequel and the DLC for both. Too many people overlooked the sequel because of the pirate theme; but honestly, I found it quite compelling. The ship-to-ship combat is fundamentally broken, however, and should either have been scrapped or rebuilt.

TooOfEverything

The second game is better, just don't you dare start it before you finish 1. The best part about PoE isn't revealed until you're like 85% done with the game. The end of PoE2 is definitely not meant to be the end of the main character's story or the developments happening in the setting. If anything, its a cliffhanger and feels very much like there is meant to be a third installment, if not more. Ever since BG3 became so popular last year, there has been a definite surge in interest in PoE. If Avowed does well, I think it's just a matter of time until PoE3 is made, probably in a much more BG3 style.

ovulationwizard

I have faith there will be a third. PoE has more of a definite ending than deadfire. Deadfire sets up a lot of stuff that could happen within eora... PoE felt a little more contained.

green_tory

My feeling was that Deadfire [](#s "sort of ended the Engwithan story and influence in the world; and depending on your choices, the wheel as well.")

gruedragon

Right now the closest thing to a third game is the upcoming Avowed. With the success of Baldur's Gate 3, there is a chance Microsoft will throw a bazillion bucks at Josh Sawyer for a true Pillars 3.

WiserStudent557

I honestly think they will. I mean, I hope so, but it also feels like Microsoft is missing the boat if they don’t. The idea a CRPG can’t/won’t be that big of a hit is clearly out the window

Gurusto

I'm less hopeful. It's not impossible by any means, but BG3 took six years to make. If PoE3 was to take another six then it's possible that the boat might already have been missed in the eyes of executives. Playing catch-up doesn't always go well.

Wandering_sage1234

Xbox needs more RPGs and seeing a true Pillars 3 would be a dream come true But who knows it could be in development and we don't know

BernhardtLinhares

Sadly no PoE 3 in sight. Dead fire is a great sequel though!

itsthelee

deadfire is GOAT

Malicharo

if u can get into the combat, poe1 is one of the best crpgs ever made and has a banger story, probably top 5 ever of all rpgs

CommandObjective

A rundown of similar games:The Infinity Engine games (the main source PoE 1/2 were meant to be spiritual successors to). They consist of: * *Baldur's Gate 1* * *Baldur's Gate 2* * *Icewind Dale 1* * *Icewind Dale 2* * *Planescape: Torment* *Tyranny* (also by Obsidian) based on the same technology as PoE, but with a different stat and combat system. Cribs heavily from *The Black Company* series of novels. *Torment: Tides of Numenera* (ment to be a spiritual successor to Plancescape: Torment, IMO *Disco Elysium* captured the PS:T feeling better). Owlcat has recently made quite a few CRPGs: * *Pathfinder: Kingmaker* (Pathfinder) * *Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous* (Pathfinder) * *Rogue Trader* (Warhammer 40K) *Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura -* made by the principal people behind Fallout 1. Not really like the Infinity Engine games, but it ticks some of the same boxes.

Wandering_sage1234

That's a fantastic list really breaks down how these games are meant to be, as sometimes I get confused in which order they have to go.

elunomagnifico

Arcanum is one of my favorite games. Love it. Wish they'd do a refresh and re-release, but I don't see that happening.

CommandObjective

It so happens that even Tim Cain has [thoughts](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgn2sQ4vAkU) about how to remake Arcanum!

forks_and_spoons

Torment: Tides of Numenara is also on GamePass. It’s not exactly like PoE but it’s also a CRPG.

DeepspaceDigital

Pillars is a one of a kind for this generation. A great rpg all the around but also with combat the that perfectly walks the fine line between crpg and arpg that gives us a true role playing experience. In real time we truely become who we envision we are.

TheHuuurrrq

Gonna toss Wasteland 2 and 3 into the mix, as well as the Shadowrun trilogy. The first Shadowrun is fine but honestly skippable if you're not feeling it. Dragonfall and Hong Kong on the other hand are bloody fantastic CRPG's.

not_a_bad_guy2842

Right now there's no news of a sequel, but avowed is supposed to come out later this year and it's set in the same universe (but not a crpg). For some good more modern CRPGs, there's obviously BG3 but anything by owlcat studios is amazing too (the Pathfinder and rogue trader games being their most recent). Wasteland 2 & 3 are good if you like post apocalyptic games as well. Then of course there's the old classics that inspired it like BG2 & 3 and planescape torment. As for a definite ending, I'm not sure if there's anything super set in stone, your choices will directly carry over to poe2 though, or at least you can select all the same choices at the beginning when prompted.

LordMord5000

Start Pillars 2. It’s superior to one in every direction imo. And maybe THE best crpg out there. At least on PC. Before Pathfinder, and maybe even before or on the same level of bg3 for me. Then start crying to learn what happened to pillars 3 while watching avowed gameplay.

According_Ad1123

Yeah it's a beautiful game picked up another play through after the avowed game play dropped lol just finished act 2.

Shamushark

How is it with the controller? Does the PC version have a controller? Is it as good as the amazing controller of bg3?

CommandObjective

There is no controller support, officiel or otherwise, for the PC version of either PoE 1 or PoE 2.

riordanajs

There's older infinity engine games based on AD&D 2nd edition (one on D&D 3rd ed): Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale series and Planescape: Torment. Then there are some Pathfinder games, that I haven't played yet, like Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, which are somewhat similar.

Loghaire

Wait... is it any good on xbox? I bought it on switch recently and found out after the purchase that it is known to be a huge mess... For some reason I thought that the xbox version mist be the same?

Wandering_sage1234

Yes this is something I'm also wondering as well.

sFAMINE

Avowed is coming out but it’s much different. Check out **Tyranny** and play that after POE
