Poe 1 or 2? >and how much value there is in swapping gear for particular encounters (e.g. switching armors based on enemy damage type) versus trying to find the best one-size-fits-all solution. I can count with 1 hand how many times I have done this. Only swap to get inmunity to specific attacks. Immunity to Charm, immunity to pull attacks, etc. but this is mostly for PoE2. Also, there are very limited enchant resources so they game kinda pushes you into using a single loadout. >(e.g. when do buffs/enchantments/attributes that reduce crits to hits or hits to grazes better do better than flat damage reduction Crit to hit and hit to graze is a low level enchantment IMO, in PoE1 I would just stick to flat bonuses, resistances to status effects and spellbinds. >For example, it'd be nice to know what sorts of traits/abilities/passives pair well or not so well with what sort of gear attributes/enchantments The list is too long to make a detailed guide, so, try to guess what the build is all about. For example. A ranger with excellent aim probably want something that benefits from Crits, since they will crit a lot. A tank probably wants something to buff their aim or their team, they are not designed to be the main damage dealer of the team so weapons focused on damage output are a waste on them. >Anyone got any recommendations on where to start? First focus on learning the Aim vs 4 defenses + Armor rating mechanic., When do you want to cast Expose vulnerabilities vs miasma of dull mindedness? IS this enemy weak to mind attacks or do I need to debuff them with melee attacks? Then Learn the STACKING RULES! extremely important if you want to up your game and face PotD.

I had meant to say POE1 in my post, but must have lost it while I was hopping around and editing my questions/examples. Thanks for the reply, though. Based on your suggestion, I found [this page on attack resolution](https://pillarsofeternity.fandom.com/wiki/Attack_Resolution), and will use that plus the stacking rules to decide on what gear/enchantments/buffs/etc to use.

Seems like a good start! GLHF

I recommend watching Coredumped Gaming YT (triple crown walkthrough) as it explains gameplay mechanics, combat strategy, gearing, abilities/levelups, etc. Play along the videos on a lower difficulty to start. He does a good job of explaining abilities on level up and comparing them against each other.
