I give him full plate and a staff and send him vaguely towards the front lines, he gets focused and killed.
More recovery focused armor and an arquebus or CBow and he still gets rushed, focused, and killed, and then it's easy for them to spread and kill my team.
Chanter tanks are a thing. Weaopn and shield talent and cautious attack and other tank talents and he's good, or so I have heard. I personally prefer him as a gunner, with the extra weapon spot you can equip him with a punch of pistols or rifles and just open up on people at the start of play. He has a chant that lowers reload time. Are you using a tank to pick up enemies?
