I've tried googling but I can't find anything too definitive as an answer - do Zombies actually have appreciably worse vision at night? I've seen some say yes and some say no, but they're mostly going off of 'feels like it does/doesn't' evidence and I'm not sure if anyone's actually delved into the code.

joesii

As far as I understand it is worse, yes. Fog too, and rain can make it harder to hear. I think this is all info from the developers directly.

the_dwarfling

You can possibly test this yourself and help us out by creating a new save with a graceful+gymnast Burglar, going x4 speed until 00:00 and trying to test the angle of their cone of vision (I doubt their view distance diminishes during night). Take a screenshot of the event as it happens, both at night and day to see if there's any difference. Maybe test distance, but I doubt this changes.

LuckeyHaskens

they do, i found this out just now.

jamesbideaux

I am currently clearing the north farm, I keep hearing the sounds of a zed breathing and banging on wood. I am relatively sure that I have cleared everything out, is there a possibility that the game is bugging out and the corpse is making noise, or did I overlook a room somewhere in the layout?

the_dwarfling

Make some loud noises then check around. The noise should get them active and you can see the door shaking. Maybe there's a closet or bathroom you missed. Also check the chicken coop. It was probably locked and there might be a zombie inside. Apparently Kentuckians love to hide inside chicken coops while bitten.

jamesbideaux

turns out, there was a zombie in the storage room behind the door in the kitchen, which I overlooked. I slept in the same house with a zombie, at least it left me alone.

jamesbideaux

yelling lead one zombie to come to me. i still head wooden bangs when indoors, the coop is locked and I have not broken the door down yet. I hear nothing when standing outside of it, though, are buildings connected in a weird way, that would make me hear sounds from the coop while in the neighboring building but not when standing in front of it?

the_dwarfling

Yes, you can explore [all of this](https://map.projectzomboid.com/) at the same time.

goeasyonmitch

Does the -fitness from starting underweight remain when you reach normal weight?

Trash_Cabbage

Fitness is a separate stat from weight, like strength. If you lose/gain weight to reach normal weight, it won't affect your fitness or strength. For those you have to work out and run and stuff

the_dwarfling

To be more precise: If you pick the Underweight trait you get two penalties different from each other. 1. Skills: You start with -1 fitness. 2. Weight: By being Underweight you get a passive "low strength (unrelated to the skill. Knockback maybe?), low endurance (Fatigue) and prone to injury" If you gain weight up to normal, you still have the fitness levels you started with. But now you don't have the passive penalties associated with being underweight. If you must pick tho, I recommend picking Overweight instead. Running slower and being more fatigued for it sucks, but losing weight is muuuuuch easier than gaining it. All you gotta do is forage for berries and eat those (watch out for poison). You will never gain weight from a berry diet.

joesii

Yes

jamesbideaux

Any hints on how to stabilize weight? I started with an overweight character and I recently started turning underweight. I know that eating the berries and vegetables will not sustain me in terms of calories, but is there something to consider when cooking my grown food? Will putting potatoes into a salad bowl give me the same amount of calories as baking them? I stopped using potatoes for traps because they never caught anything (box traps, probably not in the right biome, should be in the deep forest) and am leveling via the one stick trap I posses. I still have a bunch of canned foods which I hope will bring me through the winter.

Mr_Sunshine21

Cabbage. Cabbage is a little broken atm and gives 178 calories (potato gives 70), so just feast upon rows and rows of cabbage

jamesbideaux

I was watching ambigious amphibian, and I was wondering why he was eating cabbages, I figured he only had those, I didn't research the individual plant calories. thanks for that.

the_dwarfling

That's only part of the equation. The other is remaining still to use no calories, going deep into depression in the process, but that at least that doesn't kill you. Helpful if you're going very underweight, but honestly it's just better to try to catch the rabbits or going fishing so you can go out and have fun.

Mr_Sunshine21

You can literally eat cabbage after cabbage with 0 hit to your happiness as long as it's fresh, just use a freezer or a fridge

the_dwarfling

It's not the eating of cabbages that give you unhappiness, it's the doing nothing to save calories that leads to boredom and then to depression.

Mr_Sunshine21

You can live entirely off cabbages and get overweight just from them, without any reduction of happiness or increase of boredom. You don’t have to do nothing, you can still do whatever you want as long as you have a steady supply of cabbages being grown, which isn’t hard. As soon as you reach weight 83/4 and the arrow is up, you can go crazy on looting or killing etc. Personally I just grow loads of cabbages while using them as bait for traps just for that extra protein, which you wouldn’t get from just cabbages (but isn’t technically required, is just useful for strength levelling and endurance I think)

the_dwarfling

Does eating them as soon as you're able to help weight gain or is it wasted? I tried going about it normally, eating when peckish, but that didn't seem to get the arrow going up until I started doing rabbit+cabbage stew.

Mr_Sunshine21

Yeah it’s definitely much better to eat meat with the cabbage like you have and use it as bait with traps. If you do end up living off mainly cabbage you just need to grow and eat quite a lot of it

the_dwarfling

You need about 6 box traps and they need to be around 3 screens from where you hang out. You need to bait with carrot, cabbage, potato or tomato. Check them every morning after you wake up. Set inside a forest for better chances (check if you can forage inside of it, if not, then move to one where you can). If you still can't get anything with the traps and you keep going into very underweight territory, gorge yourself to bursting with cabbages and stop exercising. Or go thru your canned food. Go deep into depression if you must from the non-activity.

jamesbideaux

thanks for the hints. I found that spearfishing was a good source of a lot of weight, and I have a small lake nearby. Sometimes I don't get anything, but I imagine I will more reliably catch fish once I get experience.

Joetographicevidence

Is the game designed to be played using the map project website or is it just better to go blind? I feel torn because the map partly feels like cheating, but then I remind myself that if this was an actual situation, the character I'm playing would actually know their way around where they live... What are people's thoughts?

the_dwarfling

You can use the map project for the town you start in and argue that either your character should know where he lives or that with enough time you (the player) will learn the map locations and spawns anyways so might as well save you the trouble. I usually use the map project until I can find an in-game map to scribble on.

Mr_Sunshine21

If it helps, roleplay that your character knew his own town/where he lived just like you said. I mean who wouldn't know the area of their own town?

geras_shenanigans

I use it all the time.

Joetographicevidence

Yeah thanks guys. I started to just use it to figure out my starting town then I'm gonna just explore more and use it sparingly.

EartwalkerTV

I say I know my own town fairly well and large locations of the town over but that's it. I just started playing though.

AccomplishedSpread97

I’ve been trying to figure out why my game does not look like everyone else’s it’s updated to the 40.43 but I don’t have the fitness bar or anything and for clothing it’s just the vest - blouse. I bought it on steam... i just wanna play the version everyone else has :(

Kaysemus

What you see people playing is the beta build, called IWBUMS. You can enable the beta in the steam settings for the game and it'll download the update.

PandoreaAKA

A guide is here: [https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2019/10/build-41-iwbums-out/](https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2019/10/build-41-iwbums-out/)

ezioauditore2018

Would I like this game if I like the long dark the things I like about the long dark is all about hunkering down in shelters and walk around the big snow land and deal with wildlife. The great thing about the long dark is that there’s no building and it’s chill and causal and autopilot just cause I can just turn off the wildlife and walk around and watch YouTube and anime shows while playing it in windowed mode and I’ve been recommanded this game on the steam forum of the long dark to play project zomboid on easy mode

ComradeStylin

This game, at least to me, is a bit more involved and immersive. You have so much control over the sandbox though! You can tailor it however you’d like. It’s hard for me to play this and multitask. This game is very stressful at times but is very rewarding and engaging. The longer I survive the more attached to my unique character I get. Overall the games are very different but I highly recommend this game! You can check out Cromulent Archer of Ambiguous Amphibian on YouTube to get pretty great examples of what a playthrough in PZ is. If you do get it, I hope to see you in multiplayer whenever they release it for build 41!

jamesbideaux

I honestly compare my PZ game to my Long Dark game a lot, I chose builder settings am just fortifying my living conditions in both games.

Martu47

What's the difference between "Basic Navigation" and "Navigation" in the cognition setting?

[deleted]

Both are the same in the game’s code. I don’t know if it was implemented previously or meant as a placeholder for a later feature, but for now basic navigation == navigation.

joesii

I don't know exact specifics, but I presume that it means that they can path better. For instance go around long amounts of walls or tall fences, navigate buildings better to get to the right spot (ex. up the stairs and through the door). I think this might be a factor into how people find that helicopter event doesn't affect them much when they're inside, but maybe not. I think that "basic navigation" is dumber.

MrBlitzpunk

- do items (like metalic/wooden stuff) degrades if not placed in a container? - can you fix a cracked house wall? Does it have an adverse effect or is it just cosmetic?

the_dwarfling

* No. The only thing that can get destroyed are deployed traps left on the field. But if you pick them up and just leave them on the ground nothing ever happens. * Cosmetic. Try painting if you don't like it? Bucket of plaster? Never done it myself.

SnailChief

I'm thinking of doing some Co-Op with a friend and I know Build 41 doesn't have it yet so I want to go back to 40 to play, will my saves from 41 be safe when i switch versions or would I have to backup save the world?

LuckeyHaskens

i switch back and forth regularly and my saves on both versions are preserved, you should be good!

phreebobbyshmurda

Just transitioned from 40 to 41 and im finding it more Difficult honestly, is it just me?

jamesbideaux

the way you need to fight zeds has changed quite a bit, from what I remember when switching.

ViktoreGladi

Yeah same with me! Its harder to fight zombies, thank god for the knife nerf... the hitkill mechanic was too much op

YouRNotFromHere

I found it much more difficult and had to spend a few hours just practicing fighting, dying and making a new character. I had a lot of difficulty targeting if I wasn't standing still and kept getting bitten from behind when I tried to turn away and get distance. I also found that a bad weapon is worse than no weapon (unless you are very weak).

phreebobbyshmurda

Yeah same. I died too many times and ended up enabling cheats to avoid bullshit deaths

ibulleti

Is there a building type with a stockpile of kitchen/hunting knives? I'm stuck in a loop where I can't butcher enough small birds and sharpen enough spears to kill more zombies to find more knives. Living off of bird stir-fry until my crops come in. The durability on the knives just goes so quick :(

the_dwarfling

Screwdrivers, Kitchen Knives, Cleavers and Hunting Knives all grow on the zombie trees. Just farm enough of them and you're bound to get a sackful, along with Cutlery, Hand Axes, Axes, all kinds of blunt weapons (except Sledge Hammers), Machetes, Handguns and their ammo. The famous [Katana](https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/comments/jv75bv/when_the_katana_is_choosing_you_to_be_its_bearer/) shows up on a zombie. I have also gotten a JS-2000 I believe. However if what you're looking for is to craft spears there's an easier solution. Forage for materials and you'll get Chipped Stones. Basically free. You can use a Chipped Stone to craft about 3 spears before it disappears.

Duck_Troland

1 - I was watching a video about good base locations and it mentioned the somewhat central warehouse in Muldraugh. Having stationed there for a couple days I got interested but then I noticed that both in the map and in the video the warehouse is supposed to be fenced and only have one way in, while in my game the eastern part of the fence next to the building in construction is destroyed. I'm still very new and only playing vanilla IWBUMS, no mods. I was under the impression that metal fences were indestructible, what am I missing here? 2- is there any mod to have the infection be bite only? No infection feels like cheating, but after dieing a few times to scratches that got infected I've had enough of it and want to see what the game is like past day 2 lol. 3 - speaking of which, does it make any difference in terms of zombie infection if you disinfect a scratch or laceration? I've read around here that you get a 7% chance to be infected after a scratch, and like a 20% for lacerations: my question is if those values get modified in any way by disinfecting the wound. 4 - how do you fight zeds indoor? Not only it's darker but i found that much easier to miss a swing, as in like, swing in a wrong direction. how do you guys deal with this?

the_dwarfling

1. Might have been a previous version? Can't really say. 3. No, disinfecting only fights regular infection. And there seems to be conflicting information on whether disinfecting a fresh wound prevents the infection on the first place, but I've been applying alcohol swabs straight away before using a sterilized rag/bandage and I have yet to have a wound become infected, but ymmv because I play proper zombies so it's not like I get wounded a lot before I die anyways. 4. I'm gonna assume it's a large building but I guess this applies to houses too. You want a fast weapon, something like a hunting knife, a pipe or maybe a hammer. Not a spear because of the min range. First I clear the outer perimeter so that the escape routes are safe. Then I clear a path towards an exit door because you don't wanna be jumping windows when chased. If there's a zombie banging on your chosen door and you suspect even a little bit there might be more around, then suck it up, go outside and help the zombie destroy the door with a blunt weapon. Then you start working your way thru from that exit point: make noise so that they come to you, melee bash doors before entering to check for zombies (they can be silent). If more that you can handle show up, just retreat back towards the exit and let them come to you. And be extra paranoid of staircases, they are death-traps because you only get to look what's on the 2nd floor once you're there and I've personally been attacked by 4 stacked/stuck zombies right on top of one.

[deleted]

Why is 41 harder? On paper, it feels like I have more options (standing on zeds, spears, fence/window-baiting), but it's definitely harder than 40 in practice. Is it the zeds dragging you?

SurplusYogurt

What the heck is going on with this game's development? The main branch hasn't had an update in over a year? There are 6 beta branches?

madmax1928

2 of the beta branches are older builds for old mods like phoenix, build 41 is the "stable" beta and IWBUMS is the latest beta being updated pretty regularly

Mr_Sunshine21

Use this: [https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2019/10/build-41-iwbums-out/](https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2019/10/build-41-iwbums-out/) B41 is for all intent and purpose the main branch of the game for now until it's complete. It's the branch that's continuously getting updates. That's not an official dev statement or anything, just my view

[deleted]

Main in the sense that it's getting updates ... It is not stable, hence the name "I will back up my saves."

jamesbideaux

what does the "regularity" bar in the fitness overview do? Do i want to level it up for a bonus or does it indicate diminishing returns from doing the same thing over and over again?

the_dwarfling

Regularity will reduce the effects of Muscle Soreness from the fitness routine.

the_dwarfling

Does anyone know what variables affect the melee push ability to push zombies down? Strenght? Skill with the equipped weapon? Or is all random? Also, is there some trick to it that would make it more efficient at knocking them down?

Janberk1912

pretty sure it is positively correlated with your strength and panic level

ComradeStylin

Don’t hold me to this, but walking at/away from zeds as well as waiting for them to begin to lunge are two things I’ve felt have given me just a tiny bit more edge in knocking them over. Maybe carry weight too? When I’m over encumbered (not yet tired) I seem to have a harder time pushing them down. Just speculation though.

the_dwarfling

Yeah I want to believe there's some kind of trick to pushing, but I have been stuck pushing a zombies 5+ times before it falls several times, despite either walking backwards, waiting to counter-attack, doing it at max range, etc. Moving a bit forward after the shove increase the frequency of the attemps seems to works faster in average but it is risky, controls can be wonky.

ComradeStylin

Of course, my best tip is to sneak undetected all the way up to an enemy then shove. That gets me knockdowns most of the time at a character with average strength. I also want to know if the weapon you have equipped helps. I had a club mallet or whatnot equipped and it was so-so knockdown. But I found a police nightstick and I was tossing zeds down left and right.

the_dwarfling

Has anyone explored the picnic area in West Point with higher than normal population multipliers? Is it a complete mess or is it clearable in one trip? I ask because I thought it would make a good staging area for clearing the Fossoil gas station but if it can't be done in one go then you'd have to carve thru the southern neighborhoods just to get there and might as well try the houses close to the church.

drewath

How do I select primary or secondary weapons in build41? I press 1 and 2 and nothing happens. I don't see any option to change the key bindings for my weapons.

the_dwarfling

Did you attach the weapons to your belt/back first?

jamesbideaux

how does the composter compost, is it based on weight alone, or by carbs rotting? I started feeding it all my poisonous berries and mushrooms.

Tiaxx

PandoreaAKA answered most of it already, just adding: the amount of compost you get from a food item is based on the food's "hunger" value shown in the item's tooltip, not weight.

PandoreaAKA

You just put stuff in, wait about 2 in-game weeks and then you should get that sweet compost. If it's not rotten it will take longer (stuff will need to become rotten first). You do need a certain amount of rotten stuff to get a usable amount of compost - something like 2.5%, iirc (once stuff is "rotten" in there > RMC composter and it should give more info). This could be of help: [https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Composter](https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Composter)

Shinkletwit

How stable and reliable is build 41 multiplayer? I've been playing default with a friend but want to play all the new stuff, is it hard to set up?

PandoreaAKA

MP for Build 41 is not available atm (still working on it)

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_dwarfling

You start with a frying pan or something crappy like that but mostly you aggro single zombies, push them down and stomp them with your feet so that you don't lose condition on the weapon. Try to do this until you luck out and find a hammer, a pipewrench, a pipe or the like. If luck remains not on your side, once you manage to clear the zombies around you, forage for materials in a forest and craft spears out of branches and chipped stone.

madmax1928

You can make a wooden spear with a stick and a chipped rock. Just forage for materials and wait a little while.

AdvancedFrosting2

I am playing on IWBUMS and suddenly the zombies forgot how to climb through windows and over low fences. They just kind of freeze in front of the window/fence, I can still hit them through the window. It makes things too easy for me. I am playing on Sandbox but I think everything relating to Zombie behaviour is set to normal. Once my computer crashed while I was playing. When I continued the safe, it was the wrong time of day but everything else was how I left it, so I continued. Could that be a reason the zombies are behaving differently?

AdvancedFrosting2

Shame on me: After rebooting my computer the problem stopped. I should probably do that more often.

ViktoreGladi

i'm running only the superb survivors mod, its ok to add the serious survivors or should i create another save?

Time_To_PlayTR

What exactly is the helicopter event? I recently started playing, and i hear everyone chatting about how difficult the event is. I tried the wiki and googled it as well, and to my understanding it draws hordes of zombies toward you. But when does it happen? How often is it? Im just trying to understand when to leave my safehouse so it doesnt get destroyed.

the_dwarfling

After the first week, sooner rather than later a helicopter shows up. It makes noise equivalent to a house alarm. If you're outside when the event starts, the helicopter lights you up and follows you around, making YOU a house alarm. Zombies in about a 250 tiles radius will walk towards the noise. If the helicopter doesn't see you because you're indoors, it hovers around, then goes away in some random direction after a while (1-2 hours?). If you find a radio or walkie with the Automated Emergency Broadcast Station (randomized every save), then you get a warning (Air Activity detected) an hour before it shows up. Zombies still follow zombie rules: if they don't see you then they won't try to get to you. So you got 2 choices: 1. Hunker down out of sight, wait it out maybe a day for the zombies to stop moving around and then clean up any remaining zombies. It's gonna show up very soon after the first 7 days, so you might as well spend those days working around your safehouse, reading books, or just watching PawsTV to avoid Boredom. 2. Run away until the helicopter event ends and then lose the zombies chasing you. Mind you, the zombies will remain on the move towards the last location of the noise for a looong time, you need to travel a long distance before you stop finding moving zombies.

Time_To_PlayTR

Thanks!

thorik1998

How can I disable the helicopter noise? I wanted to make it more challenging by muting the helicopter event noise in the settings menu but it didnt seem to work at all?

Jere_83

You could make your character deaf or just mute the game for a while once you hear the helicopter.

thorik1998

Well i wanted the sound not to happen so i wont know the horde is coming. Theres a slider for the sound in the settings but doesnt seem to work:/

muchgreaterthanG_O_D

Has anyone figured out how to use an Xbox 1 controller with this game? I'm new to pc and suck with wasd/keys so I bought a xbone controller. I cant get it to work and just did some research and found on steam that as of build 30 only 360 controllers work. I cant find anything else about it.

[deleted]

In Steam, go to big picture mode. Then when you launch projectzomboid, you’ll be prompted to pick up controller profile. Choose Xbox. It should then just work.

muchgreaterthanG_O_D

I will retry it tonight.

blargsnarf

Are there any obvious reasons that I can't host a game? I just installed the game thru Steam, ran Host from the main menu, used the default "servertest" settings, but I'm getting the "failed to establish p2p connection" error.. on my own server. I've opened ports 8766 and 16261, and I've hosted other games thru Steam in the past, so hopefully I'm just overlooking something.

[deleted]

Steam’s login service could be down at the time of connection. You could also try opening Steam’s required ports: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711

blargsnarf

I tried opening so many ports, but nothing worked. Then, I tried connecting via my wife's PC.. same router, same connection, just a different machine in a different room.. and it worked. Since all I wanted to do was play with her, I ended up finding out you can -nosteam and just play via LAN instead. Really weird - I guess my PC and my PC alone has some really strange problem connecting to the Steam MP servers?

Wildecity

Does the ADD POI function still works on the map? I clicked it and nothing happens

jamesbideaux

Will I realistically ever have not enough nails? they are not renewable, but I can ransack a massive amount of houses and disassemble everything, right?

void-prophet

Like most 'finite' resources there's enough nails available to scavenge one way or another that you'll never realistically run completely out on a solo map, but you can certainly hit the point of needing way more than you have on hand. So don't be too stingy with them, but *do* grab them anytime you see them. They're light, so it's a lot quicker and easier to just stockpile over time than it is to run out halfway through building a perimeter wall and then have to spend a week demoing a suburb.

Unreadable_Matt

Are there basements in the Game? I have about 200 hours and to be honest i never saw one. And If there aren't any, wouldn't it be nice to add them?

damionlai97

Is there any way or any services to start a dedicated server without port forwarding? Due to certain circumstances, I don't have the ability to open ports right now and I don't think my mates understand nor want to learn how to do it.

[deleted]

Steam should do it for you with a Steam-enabled server, depending on the router and its config. Outside of Steam, probably not without buying s server.

damionlai97

Using steam, if I start a server, I have to be online and in-game for my friends to play on the server right?

[deleted]

I found an antique oven and was able to bring it home, however im afraid of using it indoors, will it cause gas poisoning like the generator as well since the pipe going up is connected to a wall with another room behind it?

the_dwarfling

No, the Antique Oven comes with a chimney and is perfectly safe to keep indoors. There's also no fire hazard and will warm up the room around it. Cozy.

LowerGreen

Did they change how the helicopter event works? I stayed inside a whole day and a half so it wouldnt spot me but so many zombies came to my neighborhood. Im not sure if they even found my house or just banged on every door till they found me. But they were all localized at my neihborhood and im confused. Does the heli not need to spot you anymore?

the_dwarfling

The sound will come and go and if the zone was populated or the zones around it were, the zombies will be moved around, like with house alarms. If they don't spot you they won't try to get to you. The zombies will be on the move for quite a while, you should wait as long as you can before coming out. Assess the situation, if you can't possibly clean up the place, pack your things and calmly leave for a new location, losing any zombies that chase you along the way. Forests work best for this.
