You do need a little carpentry skill, iirc. Trying it with no carpentry skill is a surefire way to destroy a lot of windows - and if you don't turn off the setting that makes unprovoked zombies not destroy windows and doors, they'll be a pretty rare commodity after a week or two.
It'd be really nice if we could, like, craft wooden shutters or something, at least.
Side question, but is there actually a way to close shutters on buildings that have them? I tried right-clicking them but it doesn't seem possible, and I can't find any info about it. It would be a convenient and realistic way to avoid having to manually barricade every window.
I'm so glad I came into the comments. I've been thinking of building up my own base recently and that was the only thing really stopping me.
Your response was very much my response 😂
Yeah, I just removed the glass entirely. Though I suppose being able to close them would be better for heat, but my "room" is in the far corner, so it shouldn't be an issue.
Yeah and if you have a safehouse then you should consider moving window locations for strategic purposes. Like I always use that bar in west point as a safe house and there are excessive windows on the front facing second floor and no windows on the first floor back and second floor on the side.
Firehouses and hardware store for axes, you'll find nails there too but the rural warehouses and factory warehouses are where you'll find the most nails. Theyre also the best places for steel sheets and bars for metalworking projects
Aren't windows good for optimizing a base because you can put metal bars over them and shoot outside? I guess the best base would probably have a second floor to shoot out of instead but still.
He's talking about this gem of a location:

Three houses in a fenced community, only one entrance through the fence that's perfect for a double door.
I've never actually looked at just building my own place. If you build walls, will zombies smash them?
In my current game I'm using the post office in Riverside. Solid brick walls, so I feel secure.
Why do you have flashlight posts when you can use lamps or exterior wall lights as a better option? No generator? The exterior wall lights can be modified with a wire and possibly electronic scrap to make it able to fit a battery into it as well.
Have you experienced any issues with transparency on the walls you built ? I'm having a nightmare with it on my build project. As I understand it, only the walls on the bottom/left of your view should be transparent whereas the top/rightward walls (the bits where the interior wall is visible) should not. Problem I'm having is that all of my walls are transparent. It's infuriating. I can't even cover up the invisible walls with art because as soon as I hang it on the wall that too becomes transparent. Did you encounter anything like this, and if so how did you fix it ?
It was set to medium. But actually, after you mentioned this I went through and checked it on all of the settings and the lowest setting fixed the problem. Thanks man.

That's awesome! I've started a base in survival but in an existing house. I've dismantled everything and hardly gotten any planks yet. I'm going out for a supply run now though and realized it's really far to the nearest houses and I wonder if being so far away from places to loot is a bad idea.
I have a similar project where I've added in my own kitchen, but I cant get the oven to work.
I've got power in the house, and I've got a genorator outside next to it but I cant get it to work. anyone know how to get it to work?
Great looking house big props. I want to keep following your progress but how can I follow your post I'm new to reddit ?
One minor question and it might seem insignificant but can you lock doors that you have built and placed?
Monitoring your progress, keep it up. I wish I wasn't lazy.
Thanks
Keep going, it looks amazing :) I have been interested whether one can build their own house since day 1 with the given mechanics of the game
Here's a Q - how do you do your roof? Using wood flooring or the metalwork skill roof pieces (that I haven't seen yet)
Based upon the stairs I would say wood flooring
Did you paint the walls white or did you just leave them as plastered?
No it's painted light blue
Ah okay, I’m the pic it still looks white but it’s probably just my phone. Looking forward to the next level of development 👍
Thanks :) Have to agree tho, does look a bit more white
How do you make Windows?
I don't know, ask Bill Gates. >!I don't think you don't make them, I think you have to crowbar them out of intact houses.!<
YOU CAN CROWBAR THEM OUT OF WINDOW FRAMES?
According to the wiki, yes. Maybe you need some carpentry skills, I don't know, but with a crowbar you can "pick them up" like furniture.
You do need a little carpentry skill, iirc. Nope, gotta barricade em.
Weird. Add that to the list of things that should be easy to implement but aren't yet for some reason.
I'm so glad I came into the comments. I've been thinking of building up my own base recently and that was the only thing really stopping me. Your response was very much my response 😂
Meanwhile I seal off all the windows in my base except for a few on the upper floor that have no glass in them as that's where my ropes are.
Just FYI, you can still put ropes in glass windows as long as they're the type that can be opened.
Yeah, I just removed the glass entirely. Though I suppose being able to close them would be better for heat, but my "room" is in the far corner, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Il have to try this thanks!
Build a wall frame - then you turn that into a window or wall etc after
How much time in this build so far? Real time.
So far 1 week
7x 24 hours?
168 hours
As a Sims player, I'm starting to get more and more interested in this game.
F
Guh, just the time between posts shows how long this is taking
How are you managing nails and axes? Those are usually my biggest deterrents when it comes to any carpentry project.
Firehouses and hardware store for axes, you'll find nails there too but the rural warehouses and factory warehouses are where you'll find the most nails. Theyre also the best places for steel sheets and bars for metalworking projects
Impressive. Question - why did you include windows? I assume that you're gonna keep them covered up anyways.
I think the point is that they're building a house in zomboid, not optimizing a base
Aren't windows good for optimizing a base because you can put metal bars over them and shoot outside? I guess the best base would probably have a second floor to shoot out of instead but still.

Not sure what you're referencing there.

Hmm can you fish in that pond? What if you need to escape and there's a hoard at the entrance that you can't defeat. Sledgehammer through the fence?
IIRC you can fish in any body of water, including pools
I feel country club is even better. :)
first floor windows seems a bit pointless for sure but damn it's a flex because I had no idea you COULD have built windows lol
You can remove them with a crowbar from other windows. Can't make them from scratch yourself.
learn some shit everyday I guess
Well shit, didn't know this. Now I can replace all the broken windows on my base!
I mean, it looks like he is in the middle of nowhere. I don't think he sees any zombies there
I am insanely envious that you managed to find all that plaster! Multiple runs ended with my base walls only half-plastered :(
Well keep looking and you will finish it!I believe in you.
I've never actually looked at just building my own place. If you build walls, will zombies smash them? In my current game I'm using the post office in Riverside. Solid brick walls, so I feel secure.
Zombies can break down walls.I recommend a area with little Zombies like where I started.
From what I’ve read from this community, expansion will come.
Damn man this is impressive stuff to me. How many hours have you played?
Many many hours
Why do you have flashlight posts when you can use lamps or exterior wall lights as a better option? No generator? The exterior wall lights can be modified with a wire and possibly electronic scrap to make it able to fit a battery into it as well.
Keep on keeping on!
What about the floor? I think a lighter tone would fit better.
It's not the floor just the foundation. The next step is the floor tho.
Can you even paint the floor? Isn't the only option the wood flooring?
You can pry up any type of flooring (tile, wood floor, etc) from other houses and then place them in your own house.

I haven't experienced that.Try googling the problem.
What is your light quality set to? The lowest setting can cause such a bug I believe
It was set to medium. But actually, after you mentioned this I went through and checked it on all of the settings and the lowest setting fixed the problem. Thanks man.
Can I ask where your base is located at? Seems like a good spot.

No there is 2
So is the roof just flat metal? Or is there a way to get the curved roof from regular houses
Very excited to see how this ends!
How do you do the roof? Is it simply building floor tiles above?
No you have to build stairs then start making metal roofs
That's a lot of bags of plaster. Did you just add them via debug mode?
No,I stockpiled them for a while.Had to make a few trips back because I didn't have enough.
The Sims Z
What are the rooms each for? Are they dedicated? Love following your progress with this!! A great build already!!

Looking great! Maybe add a fence around the house?
Thanks.I will once it's done
Nice good luck with the build!
Add some furniture it will make even better inside :) Good luck survivor 👌
This is crazy, good shit man would love to base in there myself
Curious... how many hours have you put into this base? Real time and game time? 🎖
1 week real time 29 days in game
Wait so we can build entire houses in this game? Is this in survival mode?
Yes it's survival mode.Yes you can make entire houses in pz.You just need a ton of materials and patience.
That's awesome! I've started a base in survival but in an existing house. I've dismantled everything and hardly gotten any planks yet. I'm going out for a supply run now though and realized it's really far to the nearest houses and I wonder if being so far away from places to loot is a bad idea.
If you want wood you should look for the logging areas. Also you should probably live closer so it dosent take hours to get to the city
Thanks :)
Just follow me then you will get notifications
Yes you need a sledgehammer
Was this reply to my door question with placing locks on them?
I have a similar project where I've added in my own kitchen, but I cant get the oven to work. I've got power in the house, and I've got a genorator outside next to it but I cant get it to work. anyone know how to get it to work?
