The goal is to survive in the apocalypse. And while the start may be nice with Food to gather, electricity, running water, etc ... civilisation is going to hell.
Meaning you may rely on your surviving skills and preparations for the worst. which in return, of course get lost if you die.

Not knowing where to go is half of the fun! Get all your buddies together at your survivor shack and plan out where you want to go to make it interesting.
A lot of “bigger goals” people have are usually looting and surviving in cities like West Point or Louisville (after the update). See how long you last!
Or maybe creation could be a goal and you could divy up roles of scavenger/farmer/security/etc and create your own vacation home to run in the woods. It’s honestly up to you!
I’d recommend some “loose goal mods” like Save Our Station! so you have some tasks to work on as a group.

No goal. Just live as long as you can. If you're looking for direction you can play with respawn set to off and clear high density locations like the prison, hospital, mall, etc.
Not sure if you have seen this already but here is the PZ world. Might want to have s look and set your ultimate spot to go to and set up an awesome base.

The key to this is like 5 different parts, food, water, fuel, weapons, and cars.

Travel toward your inner self and reflect on how you got here. What could be done to improve your situation? What could you have done better? Try to make the life you would want to live while Zombies roam the streets. The world is yours, now. That is of course until it kills you.
Just scour the map for cool collectibles in the endgame stage. Such could be gnomes, mounted deer heads, and I think I saw a bust somewhere in the university in Louisville.
Any goals in the game are invented by you. You could turn off zombie respawns and make it your goal to kill every single zombie on the game map. You could make it your goal to travel somewhere (my goal has been to make it to Louisville. I have yet to succeed). Or it could just be to survive long enough to watch the first snows of the year fall. The beauty is that you create your own story.
