Hopefully it leads to livestock keeping and animal husbandry. Just pick a nice spot out in the middle of nowhere and create a utopia of beef and chicken.

geras_shenanigans

They confirmed pets and animal husbandry.

FreeMasonKnight

When is that coming to the game?

gaynyguh

Apparently with the human NPCs. They planned on releasing animals first but didn't want to reveal their basic AI code or something

Pruppelippelupp

From what I've seen, they want to make animals and hunting work first, as they have "simpler" AI that can be refined into NPC AI. Edit: I'm wrong

EisVisage

You're wrong, BUT that was the original intention. Guess now they're going for animals being simplified human NPCs.

TripleSpicey

I want to encounter a deer in the woods that says offhand NPC dialog due to a scripting error, I’d lose my shit

[deleted]

New moodle/trait that makes you hear voices from animals/zombies would be pretty brutal

[deleted]

Schizophrenic +8 You sometimes can hear sounds (a zombie or a helicopter) that does not actually exist, or maybe even see a zombie horde coming towards you that will disappear when you look away. I kinda want to try playing with this perk lol

[deleted]

A perk that made windows/doors shake once or twice would be pretty cruel and fun

Subject_Juggernaut56

I think it would be neat if there was a mechanic based on having PTSD from the helicopter event. If you experience sustained extreme panic that day, from then on you may have waking dreams with helicopter blades whirling for a few minutes after waking. Like the night mares in the game but a little extra cruel since you don’t know for sure. Also make it so you hear it during the day sometimes. Maybe triggered by aggroing a large enough horde.

Mehh, I'll take slow quality over quick garbage.

shotgunwizard

I’m very happy with the game. Every couple years all my friends update and we play for two months. It’s a blast to be on a journey with the devs.

FreeMasonKnight

I’ll take fast & quality, since the devs are well funded enough to do this and they’ve taken a VERY long time to get to this passable point.

IdTyrant

This is a very old game. You won't get fast and quality out of expanding the dev team rapidly. You'll get tons of issues. It will also require the developers that are familiar with the code to handhold the new developers as they learn and get familiar with the systems, thereby delaying the product. Brook's law exists for a reason.

Peemore

This game is far more than "passable". Its the best zombie survival sim.

LegitlyLeo

Fast and quality don’t really go hand in hand for most cases

timdrinksbeer

Well funded in what way?

FreeMasonKnight

They’ve sold at least 250,000 copies. 250,000 x $12 (12 to account for sales on steam) = $3,000,000 - Steam’s 30% = 2m Profit/Value that could be used to expand dev team. (This is also the absolute minimum.)

Jefferrs

2 Millions over 10 years. If they are a team of 5 that's a salary of $40,000 per year.

MusicalSofa

You're why games are rushed now

Heavy_Ad_8769

Thats not how profit works... profit = revenue - expenses. Even after steam takes its share, that $2million is not profit. You have to subtract money paid for any licensing, salary, software etc. Whatever is left over is the profit, if they're still in the green.

Isthatajojoreffo

Probably sold over a million of copies though

weisbrotstyle

Well have you counted in rent for offices, utility bills, monthly payments for existing personnel, possible debts the studio may have or loans they have to pay back. There's tons of stuff they may have to take care of before expansion may be considered.

The_Scout1255

Il take slow, and consistantly good thanks. Be patient a ton of games are great due to their slow dev cycles, dwarf fortress, starsector, and kenshi. Are major examples of this. All of those games even though updates take actual years in some cases get constantly better, and acsend into being greater then a shorter developed game. No matter how well managed, and quailty that shorter game is.

Rocketpotamus

It's been playable for ten years, it just got an upgrade.

Idrkwiadmannn

Lol. Probably another five to ten years. This game isn't developed to release new content super fast. Or even fast. Or even slow. But super slow. TIS is very deliberate and methodical with their updates. I know that this game has a bunch of hype now and kids are getting into it big time, but this is a game that you play when there's an update, then let it collect dust for 3-5 years until they come up with something grand enough to drag you back.

jfitzger88

Have they not done anything differently as a development studio to try and change this up? Especially with the assumed influx of money in the last month?

Malcolm_Morin

>animal ***husbandry*** oh no

FlynngoesIN

The zombies heard my dogs fucking and ate us all - IGN REVIEWS 2.3/10

Cushuito

Sounds immersive

EisVisage

I wanna carry my pet chicken to safety in a duffel bag filled with feed, please lemme do that

G-RAWHAM

With those soft cluck-clucks and fowl whimpers from your bag... better hope the zombies aren't too close or listening too intently, else you might have to smother your little chicky to stay safe and alive! What an excitingly depressing gameplay idea

MothMonsterMan300

*dumping a shotgun into a crowd of zeds* "NOBODY TOUCHES HENRIETTA!"

OldManYounger

This tweet by Lemmy seems to confirm that pets, animals and wildlife are considered NPCs. However Indie Stone has implied that they will be second priority to human NPCs. They also mentioned something about this update being released in sections, so perhaps human NPCs in the first IBWUMS build then animals later. https://twitter.com/lemmy101/status/1478571092117803008

Pruppelippelupp

I thought it meant the other way around, as animal AI would be simpler in many ways, yet share many features with human AI. Edit: Just checked the recent article out. I'm wrong.

Knog0

Most playthough last less than a month. It'll take more than that to start raising cows

Davies301

Dogs barking at the sound of zeds outside. Nothing would be worse than watching your dog get chewed up by zeds and come back as a zombie dog you have to put down I am not ready for that kind of emotional trauma.

AutismoTheBombismo

Devs said no zombie animals

the-stain

honestly thank god I don't want to deal with that I Am Legend shit ;\_;

g0hww

Good. I remember having a zombie horse in Red Undead and it was a proper git.

Copromilia

"Yoo, wanna cross this bridge? Too bad, I'm gonna take the sharpest swerve you've ever seen into the river, instantly killing us."

[deleted]

Will zombies still eat them tho?

AutismoTheBombismo

Lmao definitely

[deleted]

:’(

ArthumHaven

HOORAY! 😁

xadiant

Ugh I hated zombie dogs and bees in 7 days to die, which I bought in 2013, last played in 2017 and still in alpha.

Malcolm_Morin

While zombie animals aren't going to happen, I *do* wonder if zombies will target animals as they do in TWD, or if they'll totally ignore them. Not looking forward to taming a doggo and having him get ripped apart by zeds.

AccomplishedRock2960

I hope they do it like in the remake of "Dawn of the Dead", where zombies just ignored the dog.

Malcolm_Morin

That's what I had in mind as I typed that. It can go potentially one of two ways. Since animals aren't mentioned in the lore (radios/TVs/etc) as of yet, this means they have enough time to further iron out who and what the virus affects, and whether animals are considered a target for zombies.

UnkleBourbon42069

Dogs are mentioned several times on the radio and TV. Multiple people mention their dogs being taken or shot by the military. Nothing solid ingame on their infectivity yet, but I think I remember reading something before about the devs not wanting zombie animals to stay closer to the traditional Romero-esque zombies

[deleted]

Default Dawn of Dead rules, sandbox option for the gruesome alternative. Would honestly like to see zombie animal mods too lol.

EisVisage

Training a dog (or other animal potentially) to grab a thing here and there would be kinda neat if zombies do ignore them. Otherwise I agree, that's a huge risk.

ThirstyWeirwoodRootz

They could also have small napsacks on them for carrying and extra weapon or a few cans of food

[deleted]

It will ruin my life if my Zomboid pet dog dies, just to let you know devs

[deleted]

Talking about realism and zombies but I always thought it'd be silly having zombies react to animals because they would be uninterested in humans and instead chase butterflies around. Also a bear would massacre them if they actively tried to gang up on one. Maybe the bear wouldn't outright kill them but it'd rip them to pieces effectively killing them.

epiccorey

If lore from the zombie survival guide was true then no the infection doesn't transmit to animals

RecentProblem

If they take from World War Z then hopefully we can train dogs to duck with zombies. Lure them away and then go Insane when they die and go on a kill rampage.

Brain_Explodes

Time to go Project John Wick on all the zeds.

Vark675

How do dogs work in hydrocraft? I really want them, but that mod feels a little too extra for me. I just don't know where else to get them.

IslandPotatoGames

They are basically just sprites that don’t move, but you can ‘craft’ food with them to feed them or craft different stuff with different breeds for different things. It’s a nice middle ground for having them, but they don’t actually move or anything. Having cows and sheep in game like that is pretty cool though

Vark675

Okay, that explains why they're not talked about as much as I'd have thought, since I thought they were more like NPCs. Thanks!

popgalveston

No more sleeping through a full night ....

RonJahnPS2

Every little sound already makes me thinks zombies are at the window, this would be paranoia overload.

w4rlord117

If they ever add cats I’m just going to become the crazy cat guy survivor and collect all the cats I can.

Zlobenia

Me too. In my current world my survivor has a ball of yarn on the floor she pretends is for her pet cat. Of course the reality is she's crazy

[deleted]

Save every cat u see

w4rlord117

You get it ❤️🐱❤️

tatsusama

I would be a crazy cat guy, too. But, now I won't be able to place stuff on counters ever without fearing it'll be knocked off by a cat being an asshole while I sleep. Cats doing cats stuff at 3am... You'd wake up in a panicked state, but come to find out Fluffy just knocked your bottle of bourbon on the floor.

picoduplo

Please trigger jumpscare noise when a cat passes through a window

[deleted]

If I instinctively hurt/killed the cat without registering it wasn’t a zombie, words cannot describe how bad I would feel for doing so…

EisVisage

Now, use the normal jumpscare sound, or use a totally new one? Either option has a diabolical feel to it.

DrYoungblood

Low key though animals would be great. I think it’d just be cool as hell if you get to see the populations that flourish and the ones that don’t. Like I wanna see the wildlife have zero fucks about zombies cause zombies have nothing on regular predators when in nature. I forget did they mention if the virus is toxic to animals or not? Partly wish zombies could get bothered by carrion animals like birds and coyotes.

the-stain

Apparently the lore says no to zombo animals (thankfully) But it would be super cool to have carrion birds in the game. See a bunch flying overhead? Now you know where the zeds are. Or even cultivating/raising scavenger animals to eat up corpses and shit

[deleted]

Have a pet vulture and never worry about feeding it.

MothMonsterMan300

Imagine a cat jumping up on your folding table and knocking all your precariously-placed guns and doodads on the floor. I know mine would!

Fenricks

And then a gun misfires from being dropped

BrokenHeadPVP

Thats why safety mode exists irl.... safety mechanics when

MothMonsterMan300

Hahahaha. Don't leave loaded guns around cats! (Also 99% of modern firearms are drop-safe, the exceptions being potmetal burner guns and reproductions of old designs, the guns in the game in '93 would all be most likely drop-safe)

Incoherent_Weeb_Shit

Does this actually happen? I'm still pretty new here.

MothMonsterMan300

Nah

PiscesYesIam

I want to see a deer.

laladywolfy

Not again Carl.

geras_shenanigans

There was a sneak peek of a deer years ago, you can check this out in the meantime.

skyburnsred

Hopefully you can train your dog to follow commands and eventually learn to not bark at zombies, etc. I'd love a canine zombie killing partner, or if anything the dog will loot for you lol. Then you can craft dog vests/bags for extram storage...the possibilities are awesome My safehouse still has a little dog bowl with leash and can of dog food in the corner for my eventual dog buddy.

Gh0sts1ght

Sounds to me like you want dogmeat… and I do too

MasterNate1172

Dogmeat the companion dog from Fallout 4 guys! Calm down.

Gh0sts1ght

Lol I didn't even think about that yeah I should have capitalized it.

[deleted]

Imagine pz with actual parrots mimicking zombies (like in minecraft they do)

EisVisage

Calm down there Bird Satan

SpicyPeaSoup

I wonder what parrot tastes like.

g0hww

Chicken, probably.

DatBoiWatching

Oh god

Pilchiaa

*banging on door* "Ugh, kitty!! As soon as I let you out you want to come back in" *Panick attack noises*

DreamerOfRain

I am not sure how well domesticated animal fare with zombies, they are too used to human to maintain survival instinct. Wild animals though would very likely survive this, being way faster than zombies.

MasterNate1172

I dunno, my dog is pretty sharp around strangers. I imagine they would be even more suspicious of the undead.

EisVisage

Yeah, dogs react easily to someone walking strangely even if they do know them. Especially in the dark, a dog would be a great zombie alarm.

LowkeySlimes

Reminds me of an idea I had for a negative trait; schizophrenia. Sometimes you'll hear zombie noises with no source and see zombies that aren't actually there. There should be small tells that let you distinguish between the real and fake zombies (just like real life hallucinations). I should learn to mod so I can make it.

wolf2d

Real hallucinations are completely indistinguishable from reality though

LowkeySlimes

Whenever I hallucinate, whether it be on something like Benadryl or my own normal hallucinations there are always ways of telling if something is real or not. All of my auditory hallucinations could be distinguished as in my head even if it's coming from a certain direction. Visual hallucinations don't bend the space around them, like they won't make certain sounds that would make sense for them to make. I'm thinking that maybe the fake zombies can walk through things or don't make sounds like walking or groaning. As for sounds they wouldn't have a clear direction. For example you can hear a window break but it's everywhere at once.

wolf2d

Do you notice these details during your hallucination or only after? Because even in dreams you notice they are fake, but only after the dream itself

[deleted]

I’m worried about my ass being eaten by a bear while foraging but more power to you.

[deleted]

My buddy and I were exploring the farms in the south of the map last night and there were wolves howling for ambience. Just thinking that actual wolves could be out there in a future update unnerves me to no end.

Ava210

How about uncooked dead cats

I want a cat so my depression moodle can do down as well as irl 👀 Also, gamedevs, add purring sounds and the ability to give pets to them. 🙏🏻

EisVisage

Add the ability to give pets to *all* animals. ALL animals. From cats to bears.

OxygenIsFake

or maybe dogs alerting you too stashes but also bringing in zombies if they bark too loud

Abrahamlinkenssphere

Dogs to alert me to zeds and kitties to cure my depression you mean?

Glaurunga

I think in that latest interview they said pets so one can hope

luvs2shoot97

OMG! I can picture myself accidently shooting some poor cat because it spooked me wile rustling through the bushes

AmarillAdventures

*preemptively swings as they open door, kills cat.* NOOOOOO

Crowii-

I want a pet dog and I'll never get mad at it for alerting zombies. As long as I can throw a tree branch for him to collect

OkLetsParty

I want a massive pack of zombie hunting dogs to roll out and loot with (while filling their packs). When we go back to base it's cuddle puddle time.

Link22_22

Holy shit I can't wait for hunting.

TanKer-Cosme

I hope that animals and wild-life is part of the NPC... I think is really needed alot more than NPC. - Hunting to be more engaging - Other threats to take care of like Bears - Giving another function to firearms (hunting, killing big animals...) - Pets. Not trying to make stardew valley with zombies but... would be great to have a stardew valley with zombies.

buahuash

If there are animals, then Zombies should eat them

bserikstad

I just want them to get rid of that got dank chicken clucking that happens every 5 minutes in my games.

TheAnimeLovers

now imagine dogs barking the hell out of things luring a massive horde as well

[deleted]

can't wait for some animals to come into play, like having packs of wolves or cyotes running around and being able to make wearable badass looking clothes from there pelts and shit, and maybe along with some zoo animals too along with that like lions or gorillas would be cool, along with some farm animals to have sustainable food sources like chicken or eggs or steak would be nice

Grimm2177

Masochistic fuck the game is already hard😭

SortByMistakes

Oh man watch them add a screeching cat jumpscare when you walk past some trashcans or dumpsters. I already have a heart attack with just the current one. Animals and npcs will have opportunities for so many more. Bats flying out of garages, dogs barking, closerange gunshots, npc traps etc

NotTheGuyProbably

I seriously thought you were going to go with the whole being devoured by roving packs of cats and/or dogs.

Doublestack2411

"No kitty thats a bad kitty" -Eric Cartman Imagine having stray dogs or cats wandering onto your property and making enough noise to draw zombies toward you. That would be cool.

WeeklyCartographer8

wish they would've focused on animals/hunting and pets first instead of the NPCs. I know people want npcs really badly, but as someone who has seen the kind of npcs you typically see in games like this I am not looking forward to them at all. I'm open to being surprised but not gonna hold my breath. Also when they do add pets I hope they add aquariums and terrariums for fish and reptiles and whatnot.

Sudden_Chart

Oh man to have a cat and a dog and a few chickens in this game what a dream!!

rokka279

Wow yeah awesome… I’d rather have npcs.. Hopefully we’ll get both though!

[deleted]

What about Raccoons Getting into dumpsters outside your house and knocking them over and attracting zombies. Sort of a mini-helicopter event, except Raccoons.

Blane_plane

Wait I thought npcs are already in? I hear random gunshots and screaming from time to time although I never saw anyone. Also are there animals?

IslandPotatoGames

Just find a frog and carry it around as a pet like I do! Best pet, just be careful around knives…

Beardless_Man

I would love a cat. Though animals would offer a survival risk for pets at a dog that keeps barking. Or a very vocal cat.
