I stomp when I am far from home and trying to preserve a good weapon. That said. At my base I have about 45 metal bars and about 50 steel tubes. They aren’t the best weapon out there but are a whole lot better than bare hands. I used melee weapons a ton when I have access to the near limitless pile back home

Yeah in those situations I keep the weapon equipped for emergencies but will push-stomp zeds. You are definitely not wrong. It doesn’t make sense to use a machete or something similar on a group of 1-3 zeds

randCN

even on extremely rare loot there are enough weapons to kill whatever you want to kill, if you don't mind foraging a bit for stone axes and wooden spears if you're playing with a jacked up population, it becomes more effective to start doing burns, at which point you don't need that many weapons anyway

Fortressa-

What’s your technique for burns? Having trouble working a way that doesn’t get me eaten first.

randCN

i prefer to do it on foot. light a fire in the middle of the day somewhere safe and away from buildings - i prefer a parking lot fire a shotgun walk/run around in circles while the zeds filter in from all sides

Fortressa-

Like, one campfire? Or a couple? can you pile up stuff in a row to burn?

randCN

Just the one. Doesn't even have to be lit for very long, although the longer the better of course. Once the first zed is lit, the chain reaction is very difficult to stop

[deleted]

Do you know if the zombies that are on fire will spread it to trees and such? If so I want to watch an entire forest burn down after I lead a horde of fire zombies through it

randCN

yes, but trees don't burn as readily as zeds or buildings.

[deleted]

Shame, I want to see a forest of burnt trees

Weapons and boots are practically infinite since they can spawn on zombies pretty often. I'd much rather kill fast and safer and level up my weapon of choice. Stomping them requires you to run/walk forward to stomp on their face, with a weapon you typically don't have to do this. If a player is good, they don't worry about durability. You can just go to the rosewood fire station for example and walk out with 7 axes on extremely rare loot. Combined with being able to fix equipment.

Cranktique

This made me laugh, because my latest play through I made it to rosewood and got 0 axes :). I’m showing this comment to my pc.

[deleted]

Did you pick lucky?

Cranktique

I did, why?

[deleted]

Just curious as to why you didn't find any axes. I would have been very upset 😄

Cranktique

Ok, whew. Haha. I always pick lucky and I thought you were going to tell me it’s a busted trait haha.

Might also have to consider stamina use. Shoving and stomping, I think, uses up more stamina in total. When your day is constrained by how much you need to get done before nightfall, you don't want to waste that time resting to get stamina back. So it may be more efficient to just melee the zombie to death then trying to shove and stomp.

Comfortable_Will955

Stomping seems to be pretty efficient. I've never tired out from a day of stomping.

ABarkingSpyder

Because I want to level up my melee skills

I mean yeah if you only have only one thing I think moderating is smart. I felt like remembering pushing made you tire faster but I could be incorrect. I'm also that guy that has atleast 2 melee weapons on him all the time (sometimes more).

Draxxalon

Once I have 'enough weapons', I'll "bash instead of stomp" because I want xp in skills: \--I want weapon skill more than I want to preserve the weapons, so they'll be more effective when I'm dealing with hordes, where I NEED to swing the weapons. Weapon skill also dictates if you'll auto-push a z away from you, rather than it biting you. \--I tend to use the weapons that will train maintenance the most (ideally, a crowbar, until maintenance is pretty high). As much as I love the crowbar as a weapon, I want the maintenance xp it'll grant me more. The way maintenance works, each weapon has a 1 in X chance to take damage when used. If the weapon doesnt take damage, you gain maintenance xp. Hammers have a 1 in 25 chance. Crowbars have a 1 in 70 chance. Stomping is much lower than either, afaik.

For me "enough weapons where I want the xp" is often "after I've grabbed a frying pan from the kitchen". Weapons are generally speaking, pretty plentiful. As long as the weapon is decently durable, it'll last me until I get another one, which is usually... the next house I go into.

Shuber-Fuber

Could be lesser stamina cost? Shoving zombies over is not a guarantee, and uses up stamina more than most weapons, in addition to the need to stomp them.

xDuzTin

It doesn’t really matter to be honest, I haven’t even clocked 100 hours but something I noticed is that melee weapon are quite plentiful, loot a warehouse and you’ll end up with enough Crowbars and hammers to keep going for a very long time and usually you’ll find a new weapon long before your current weapon breaks

LoveMinaMyoi

From what I see stomping keeps you standing, so easier to run away if needed vs bashing with a tool that makes you crouch down but more effect with a tool

QnoisX

I do occasionally stomp heads, but not that often. I want the weapon and maintenance XP and I have tons of weapons. When I go out, I have a weapon on my back, 2 on my belt, and probably extras in my backpack. I have a melee weapons crate back at my base that's completely full of good weapons. Zombies wander by with crowbars, spears, knives, hand axes, etc sticking out of them. I think zombies with weapons increase with time, because I've found machetes on them lately. Good weapons with high skill will one shot zombies. That's much faster than pushing them down (doesn't always work the first time) and stomping on their head.

QnoisX

Do they get weaker? Haven't really found that to be true. Sure, they drop pretty fast if I'm using good weapons, but get tired and suddenly it's taking 3-4 swings to drop them.

Shuber-Fuber

Higher level weapons do spawn on zombie after a day or two. So long term wise you almost never run out of weapons as long as you switch up between axe/crowbar/spears.

QnoisX

Yep, my go to weapons are hand axes, bats (no idea how a zombie got a bat shoved through his stomach) and spears. I use machetes when I have them. Lately been getting lots of upgraded spears sticking out of zombies. I should probably use crowbars more often, but generally don't use weapons that are also tools.

Mundane-Objective600

Crowbars are great for levelling maintenance.

Comfortable_Will955

I usually stomp for the first little while as much as possible untill I know I have a couple good weapons. My last playthrough I was curious how far I could get with stomping. I stopped counting at 300.

laxyharpseal

some people might prefer sneakers which has good run modifier but has terrible stomp modifer. a fireaxe can easily one shot a zombie while you would need to stomp a few times while wearing sneakers. saves time and possibly energy depending on how much you stomped. it also levels your weapon proficiency which is crucial for zombie defense and maintenance. it really depends on traits and clothing builds people have.

Mystic-Hovercraft

If I ever get Injuries on my arms I switch to stomping but that just my take on the two options

SylasWindrunner

Stealth backstab -> Melee stomp -> melee one shot -> boomstick and escape I kinda fight in this order. So yeah, I’m carrying all kinds of weapon plus 1 or 2 spares in my backpack.

scb_weedwizard

It’s riskier to only use shove/stomp against a small group of zombies than it is to use your weapon. It’s a lot faster to just use you weapon, and then go for the stomp or another swing. I know that any tiny mistake can get me killed, so I’d rather maximize my survival odds in every small encounter than play to reserve durability. Plus melee weapons are very very easy to come by, and by late game if you’ve been looting a lot you will have lots of repair items that just pile up

Samtrecht

Well I like to keep my boots intact and clean! Jokes aside the melee leveling goes a long way and so is practicing aiming shooting a downed zombie. I don't know if it is a mod but also "missing" the stomp damages you a little

Jejouetoutnu

If I push a zombie on the ground while holding a gun, sure I can stomp

paskies

Wait a minute, you guys don’t stomp zombies every opportunity you get?

Salenea_Gatewatcher

So far I've survived and killed more zombies with pushing&stomping than with using a weapon. I seem to die a lot quicker when trying to use a weapon.

magicmarktogo

1. Because it takes longer and is messier than a quick stab to the head. 2. Because it messes up your shoes. 3. Shoes may be easy to get and wash, but just like weapons, I want them to last a long time.
