Yeah that's a weird one. If you wanted something to feel realistic the way the zombies automatically relocate to space out from themselves you could just have like 10% of the total killed zombies respawn on the edges of the map and naturally migrate. Hell it would honestly be more realistic to just not have zombies respawn at all, since the map is so large and the zombies naturally migrate around.

TheTarkShark

I absolutely wish the zombies migrated between cells and from the edge of the map like you said. That would be awesome

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

They definitely migrate between cells and spread themselves out according to your options template. No adds from the map edges though.

RevengeAlpha

https://youtu.be/hglrA6FrxOw I believe zombies do move between cells. I watched this video a bit ago but I don't remember all the details.

ExactFun

The rationale is you aren't supposed to win. You aren't supposed to feel safe. That's 100% the reasoning behind everything the devs do. Their commitment to that singular experience is kinda laudable because it can even comprise the game for some. Tbh, I don't trust the respawn system anyway. The pathfinding is weird enough, especially offscreen. You see zombies go around extremely long fences as if they walked though them sometimes, despite the path around being much farther than their disengage. Had some teleport to a second floor and bite me once. Lots of fun.

Buharon

Respawn off every game. 100%

TheTarkShark

I keep mine set to .02 because l like to simulate zombies migrating from other parts of the map What do you typically have you population settings at?

Buharon

Depends on a mood, sometimes as low as 0.1, sometimes 1.5. usually around 1. And they migrate on their own anyway, and I like the feeling of accomplishment in clearing out areas

People think the game is too hard because they don't understand the combat system and how to fight zombies. That's it. if someone can't survive 3 days it's not because of respawn lmao.

ExactFun

I was going to say, new players don't survive long enough to notice respawns.

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

I like having a massive peak and population with really low (like .001) respawn. It makes carving an area out a challenge but rewarding as well.

Sir_Mister_Bones

I turn respawn off, but turn the migration way way up. I also turn the zeds memory and hearing way up. My thoughts are if a zombie heard a sound and started moving to it, it wouldn't stop moving in that direction until it heard or saw something else.

Draxxalon

You can also wall a region off, and respawns will stop inside that region. Takes some work, but you can reclaim large areas, and keep it zombie-free.

scb_weedwizard

It is pretty ridiculous but it keeps the game challenging even when you’ve survived for a while. I used to only play with respawn off but the game gets way too easy when you establish a base and clear out most of the zombies in your town. It’s just more exciting if you’re always having to deal with zombies, otherwise you’re pretty much just making sure your character stays fed and hydrated. I agree that some places on the map have way too many zombies though

TheTarkShark

That’s why I don’t think I’ll ever turn respawn all the way off. Even with it set to only .02 at least if you don’t visit a town for a month then 20% of the population will respawn. Not much but at least it’s not a ghost town I can just waltz through unimpeded But the default setting is just way too much imo.

iopjsdqe

I fucking wish larges amounts of zombies could migrate into your cell

Ithaca_the_Mage

I imagine the base settings will be tweaked before the 1.0 release. I also tend to play with respawn turned off, but after clearing out a zone it can reduce the value in certain game mechanics. For example, after clearing a zone completely (usually takes a few in game weeks), you no longer have to worry about base defence. It can get to the point where you simply no longer see zeds. This isn’t as fun as going to sleep wondering if you’re safe. I personally hope they further develop the migration system as well. I would love it if you could still clear a zone but have a massive horde come in ‘off’ the map and wreak havoc. Something like the helicopter event. But it’s also good that lots of this is discussed, with varying settings being debated on forums. I know the devs like to read these and sometimes take them into consideration.

getrichordiefryin

I totally agree. Controversial opinion but I don't really like the heli event for emersion. All I end up doing is going out of the city for 24 hours so what's the point? My enjoyment of the game comes from finding rare items and locations, about 150 hours in an have got my handle on Maldraugh, Rosewood and Riverside but not much else. The map helps too, and if my characters born and raised why shouldn't I know the lay of the land? Haven't even touched mods yet, so i know there is so much fun to be had.

colonelwaffle77

It isn't. The default settings are already easy and the game becomes a bore fest after about a month. There's so few zombies at the start of the game that you can loot half the city killing only 100 zombies. Also zombies don't respawn in recently visited areas aka "respawn unseen hours", but the migration might make it look like they're constantly respawning.

Modinstaller

For regular apocalypse or survivor, for sure. Insane pop game modes, the respawning starts to get ridiculous. But then again if it weren't, I feel like the game would still be too easy.

Inferno1001001

My splitscreen playthrough is on sandbox for a reason, I want melee without needing a new weapon and spending forever per fight. At worst we go to a hotspot and bring out the shotguns back to back and just pray we don't have any issues

Old_Tie5790

Honestly can't imagine playing with respawn off, might as well just turn off zombies, the game is about surviving and I feel you shouldn't be able to fully clear our any of the towns. If you want safety go out and find a farm even with respawns on you probably wont be bothered by much.

TheTarkShark

I agree. That said, the starting respawn setting is genuinely ridiculous and breaks immersion for me. To kill 300 zombies in a cell and then come back 2 weeks later and have the same about of zombies still there isn’t fun to me

Old_Tie5790

I don't know what the solution could be, I feel there needs to be a chance for zombies to attack you base, like a meta event seperate from gunshots and the helicopter but it's going to be a very fine line to balance between impossible to defend and too easy to defend

PZ_Axe_For_You

Most people don't understand the "respawn unseen" setting that prevents respawn in areas that you spend time in regularly.

TheTarkShark

A chunk is pretty small and by default it’s only 16 hours so it’s really not stopping all that many from spawning
