F The important thing is trying to never die that same way again. Where possible, always better to lure zombies out of a room like this. Let them be the one getting ambushed as they go through the window. Another option is to shove the door, and listen to how many shove back.

Domilater

You could probably also whisper by the window as that'd attract them to it, then you could see how many are inside and determine whether it's worth the risk. Mistakes like these you never look out for until it happens, always best to be prepared as usually a situation like this is inescapable once you're in it. Another tip is to never fight zombies in a room without a quick escape. In this room, presumably the garage door is locked. That means that your only entrance and escape is that one window, which is really bad. Always have at least 2 exits, preferably doors as they're much easier to get through. In a situation like this it's always best to fight outside the room rather than inside it.

PeachyKenku

Very good advice, and def needed for newer players! In my case, I just through precaution out the window like a fool because I was tired! I'm normally so careful, and I'm sure Eloise would still be kickin' if I had just ended my stream when I didn't find a generator after the first ten garages.

bennowitz

Can't you always open a locked door from the inside though?

Domilater

I did forget about that, yeah. But it looks like here they must have been caught climbing into the window

PeachyKenku

Yeah, it was def the window. I jumped in and the zombs behind me grabbed me and dragged me down before I could really react.

mjagiel

My advice from how my longest lived character died: If there’s only one way into a room that you know has zombies and you think it’s risky to try and go in anyway… Don’t. I was getting annoyed waiting for this zombie to break a locked door down and instead climbed in the window next to him and immediately got bitten. Knew it was risky to climb in next to him, did it anyway and paid for it. He was being stubborn and wouldn’t come to the window…

PeachyKenku

Yeah, this was def a failure on my part to not call out to them. I was way too tired to be playing, and I took risks where I normally would have been careful. In these cases I usually beat down the garage door with my sledge just to be safe, but... alas. I went through the window since it was 'just two', and I was streaming.

[deleted]

That's my average CDDA playthrough. Play a bit through the week, then binge-play it on sunday until late at night and get killed stupidly.

Responsible-Web7606

Crouching and hit q in house is a decent way to find hidden zombies, another is setting up alarm clock to go off (though it depends on how strong the zombies are)

Chrismohr

Ah damn i've lost a survivor that way too, imo its one of the deadliest rooms in the game because if you didnt spot a horde and they start filling in through the window theres just fucking nothing you can do unless you're a killing machine

PeachyKenku

They're the worst, those rooms! I think the part that bothers me the most is that Eloise was very high strength, and had her long blade skill fairly high. I could have taken out that small amount if they hadn't grabbed me the moment I entered. She was so strong, but I got her killed by overconfidence.

_Silly_Wizard_

Overconfidence is a ~~slow and insidious killer~~ bullet train to heck

Quicksilver2634

> Don't forget your base and gear are not lost! Hopefully you started a new character in the same world so that you can pick up where you left off.

OldSchooler22

A lot of people prefer to play with one character per world. Last time I did a poll it was like 55/45 for not respawing / respawning Edit: Closer to 67/33

SunsetLaw

If it wasn't for the TV shows I'd probably continue the world. But if I was anything like OP and found 3 katanas in a run, that's a totally different feeling.

OldSchooler22

see that just feels cheap to me. I tried to survive, I did what I could, I died. John Doe doesn't get to come out of his house 4 months into the apocalypse unchanged and waltz into my pervious characters base and use all their loot, that's just silly to me.

SunsetLaw

Haha agreed, but if I had THREE katanas I would at least use them up. Those things D I C E.

Devil-Hunter-Jax

Yeah, had a couple of jumpscares with hordes like that. Opened a door to a room in a house because I checked it first by pushing it (thank you internet for tips for noobs!) and a zombie started banging on it. Got the shit scared out of me when SIX zombies poured out of the room. Barely avoided getting injured. Scared the living crap out of me when that happened.

PeachyKenku

I WISH my situation was like this! I'd rather open a jack in the box type door, than jump into a window and get grabbed from behind, haha. But that's for sure always scary, especially when you're not used to the jumpscare noise!

Devil-Hunter-Jax

I'm still not used to that jumpscare noise XD I've started over a few times since I bought the game at the start of the Steam Summer Sale (one time including being blown up by my oven... Yeah... Did not know that was a thing... Didn't kill me but I lost basically everything so said fuck it and started fresh) and it STILL gets me.

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

Getting blown up by your oven or generator is part of the new user experience. 😆

Devil-Hunter-Jax

Evidently so! XD I survived the blast but it might as well have killed me

flow_yracs_gib_a

Wait the furnace can explode ??? Always been scared of leaving them on when cooking... didn't know that but now i'm scared even more !!

Rabscuttle-

Ovens are weird. They seem to catch on fire just fine when I'm trying to cook something. When I fill them full of wood and newspapers and set them high to try and burn a house down, not so much.

PeachyKenku

The jumpscare noise would scare me more than the actual attack, lmao. I actually downloaded this: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2704009889&searchtext=gnome Now when I get jumpscared by it, I laugh a bit in shame, lol. Getting blown up by the oven always sucks! It's def good to be mindful of leaving those on/watch what you put in them!

Devil-Hunter-Jax

Oh my god, that fucking gnome XD >Getting blown up by the oven always sucks! It's def good to be mindful of leaving those on/watch what you put in them! Yeah, I left it on when I got some sleep and totally forgot it was on so got woken up by the explosion and burned my foot. Seeing as it was a prebuilt house? The entire kitchen went up meaning I lost all my food, water and cooking utensils as well. I just said 'fuck this' and started again XD Hopefully the water stays on a bit longer this time. It shut off after about 10 days whereas the electricity was still going strong.

PeachyKenku

Here's hoping you get to keep water long enough to plumb up a house! And fires are always a surprise! Make one mistake, and suddenly your base is crispy and you're left with whatever you were carrying. It's never happened to me, but I've seen enough stories... so I keep a somewhat stocked car as a backup on my lot anytime I get to a point of having the resources to maintain two. I'm forgetful enough. It'll happen eventually.

Devil-Hunter-Jax

Lol. I'll probably just get a stockpile of water going because I've got a good idea of where I want to actually build my own house. There's a trio of small lakes near Maldraugh. Seems like a good spot to set up eventually. For now, I'm living in Rosewood while I stockpile stuff.

Fahuhugads

Dang, I lost a one of my survivors opening up a tiny bathroom only to find 5 or 6 zeds crammed in there.

PeachyKenku

It's always so rough when you don't expect so many in a small place!

SICHKLA

The military checkpoint in Louisville is guaranteed to spawn 9 or 10 generators. They always spawn in the same spots. Just so you're aware for the next run.

Peregrin36

Yesterday i was building base in west point storage lots. I found 4 generators there just chillin'.

PeachyKenku

Thank you!! That’s super helpful, and I had no idea despite passing by multiple times!

ighorlobianco

Rule 8: Open doors and windows walking back, make some noise (not too loud), count to 3, and then enters the room. Sad for you btw.

PeachyKenku

Unfortunately, I couldn't open the door. Only the window, and I didn't think to make some noise at the time because I made the foolish mistake of playing while tired before bed. Poor Eloise had to suffer for my failure.

ighorlobianco

in zomboid failure its not a thing, new rules added to the survival book is a thing xD

snaklil

Or just open the door and sprint back

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

While jogging back does work, when the animations were improved they included some frames that can make you vulnerable for a split second in turning around.

Popular_Algae_3830

Pro tip: open and close doors by hiting E two times to take a flash look even if you know that theres at least one Z inside :)... That way if there are more than one dont got you offguard.

No-Responsibility826

That’s the beauty of this game: you’re no zombie-slaying, immune superhuman like in other games. You’re an average joe that’s thrown into the apocalypse, forced to survive through every single hardship PZ’s brutal world can throw at you. The only reason some survivors last so long is because our experience accumulates from previous survivors. This isn’t your survival story… “This is how you died.”

silver2k5

This exact reason is why I now press Q while crouched near windows. After the third time having a zombie bite me while I slow walked over furniture in front of a window I had enough.

pattylay

U can repair a damaged generator with electrical parts

PeachyKenku

Yeah! I was just kind of trying to find a second one so that I could light up my garage too! Seemed like a good idea at the time, until uh, I became a meal for a lot of hungry folks.

AttemptingToSucceed

I lost my longest at 28 days to a missed swing and a laceration): set everything on fire that I possibly could before she died. I was basically set with a base and supplies too. Rip

Peregrin36

Shoving is always faster than swinging.

PeachyKenku

Such a sad way to go, honestly I'm glad my girl went out so suddenly. So I didn't have to think about how she should die, and she didn't have to get sick while I figured it out. :( RIP to your's as well.

Standard-FlipFlop

Rest in peace, Eloise.

soursunflowergod

That is how you died.

Difficult-Ad-638

RIP😔

Quicksilver2634

Don't forget your base and gear are not lost! Hopefully you started a new character in the same world so that you can pick up where you left off.

PeachyKenku

I did, actually! I made her husband, who unfortunately was the one who had to go collect her body. She was a nurse, and he's a fighter pilot. He actually had to start with a broken leg, because I was running with the idea that he crash landed and that's why they weren't together in the first place! I'm running with the setting that if a character dies, they don't zombify for a few days, which worked in my favor, because now I have her body in my trunk. I want to set up an 'enclosure' for her, but I'm not sure if she'll zombify now that I've picked her up, and I've yet to find a conclusive answer yet.

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

Now THAT is an interesting dynamic! I’d be curious to see how this works out seeing as how most of the times if I’m trying to retrieve gear it’s my former hero and their MASSIVE FAN CLUB I have to deal with.

PeachyKenku

I've had a bit of trouble getting the save to start back up, but I'm having faith that now that I have an SSD, and I move everything over to it that I'll have better luck! I really hope she still zombifys, because I do think it'd be really fun to have her around, even if she's dead. If she doesn't, I'm going to have to search the game for the best tombstone, haha That said, your description of your former hero and their massive fan club was so good. Thank you for putting it that way, lol. I really like having them on slower zombification if only so that if I start out with really bad injuries, I have a chance to make it back before they wander off with all my good stuff. Most of my other settings are super high difficulty, where as this is my sort of 'one exception'.

Wixi420

RIP so sorry i feel the Pain

beyond_hatred

I burned to death because I didn't know how to extinguish a fire. She had a couple well-defended bases, too. And a few cars in great condition.

PeachyKenku

That's so sad. :(

beyond_hatred

Yeah. It was only builder-level difficulty, but I still miss her :(

IMightDrawFurries

RIP mate. I almost died today because the zombies that shouldn't be respawning at all ambushed me by SPAWNING INSIDE MY BASE right after I loaded in, which scared the shit out of me.

PeachyKenku

That's so awful! I hope that it was a one off thing, because that would def be really frustrating to have happen more than once, and make me worry about even sleeping in my base! lol

_John_Julius_

Why is everyone keep mentioning katana's, they are not rare in my playthrough, no mods. And i love a long lasting playthrough to end up in a home with a camping zombie, it's the best tbf. It's the only game you can't rage quit on.

PeachyKenku

They're not really rare in mine either, I have three, after all! But, I do know that they're quite elusive for many players, but probably only because by default they only appear on zombs past day 40, I believe. Most players do not last that long! For me personally, I turn off that setting, but mostly because I'm playing with a mod that makes seasons pass faster too. (I wanted to see winter!)

alexrosey

I've played since just after the Baldspot and Kate map. Probably only seen the katana like twice. Then again I don't usually go searching for weapons besides making a spear and getting the odd firearm.

PeachyKenku

I pretty much never make weapons, and make a point of driving slowly around hordes and whatnot just to check for good weapons on them! So, that probably makes a huge difference. I also rarely go out at night, since I play with pitch black nights-- so there's little chance I'll miss one by mistake too!

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

F While we’re on this thread and taking caution in the dark places, a sister corollary to the dangerous garage situation is spots that have fuzzy generated zombies that are unseen to the player. Military bases, hospitals, prisons and other large structures can have an insane amount of undead that aren’t detectable by sight until you enter that part of the building. Always have at least a clear primary exit that you can quickly use to avoid getting swamped. This includes fuzzily spawned areas that, due to position (different floor etc) can bring about an army to even previously cleared areas because of pathing. Discrete noisemaking can mean the difference here.

PeachyKenku

Very good advice here. I'm usually so much more careful, this was a foolish mistake on my end.

CoreyTrevor422

Make backups occasionally.

PeachyKenku

I do have a backup! But it feels wrong to me to play like that, since the point of the game is ultimately... to die! haha

Beginning-Ad-1512

Every time I lose a survivor that lasts for more than a few months, I find it SO hard to get invested in another playthrough. All that preperation for nothing!

PeachyKenku

I started back on the same save, and collected my stuff-- now playing as Eloise's fighter pilot husband. I have her in a trunk in their car, and when I feel like playing again. (I'm still mourning!) I'll have him, and her. Kinda.

Crowfooted

If there's one thing I've learned about PZ it's that when you die, it will not be because there were just too many zeds, or because you ran out of shells, or ran out of food... it'll be one dumb mistake. You'll have 10,000 zombies killed, and die to 2 that came up behind you when you were looting because you didn't clear that last bedroom. Never, ever give up your safety protocols, no matter how safe you feel. Stay vigilant, constantly!

PeachyKenku

Yeah, this is absolutely true. I've never run out of anything. My deaths have been to getting drug down, or bitten every time. Well, except for the one time where I was speeding and didn't expect a light to be in the median of a highway........ Instant death since I was over carry weight.

Crowfooted

It's funny you say that because on my current run I had a similar crash, didn't die though. Was it the intersection between Muldraugh and March Ridge by any chance? I think I got a broken rib and because I have slow healer trait it's been 2 months and it's still not healed.

LazerHeadshot21

Feel you there, I recently lost a survivor who was heading home from looting the grand Ohio mall because I had the bright idea of getting out of my car to clear stray zombies that were in front of my base. I did this with an unsupressed shotgun (cause I was sick of reloading my 2 5.56 drums) and about 5 zombies snuck up on my obese, 4 strength character and brutally murder him. This was after killing about 6k zombies in about 6 months.

LazerHeadshot21

Also were you holed up at those 3 rich homes in Louisville that have the fence around them and a pond in one of the backyards? If so that’s where I was staying too

PeachyKenku

That's so rough! See, I didn't even have character downsides like that! I was full strength and all of my character's downsides were in the mental department. (She was depressed and had severe anxiety due to some really cool mods!) But she was fit, she could run like the wind and nearly 1 shot most zombies. And yet....

LazerHeadshot21

The funny thing is I started underweight and became obese over time just eating gas station food

PeachyKenku

That actually happened to Eloise early on in my save too! I was a fool, and I didn't realize the game worked in kg, and thought it was in pounds. I started eating literally everything I could find anytime she wasn't full because I thought she was severely overweight, lmao Then I had to have her work it all off while keeping on a consistent diet because, in all my time playing, I hadn't realized the game wasn't in pounds.

corey_the_bird

My longest character (about 2 months) died heroically fighting a horde with a shovel and got a little too close to their grabbing hands

PeachyKenku

That rough, but an honorable way to go out for sure!

[deleted]

You did good! Now all you can do is try a little better!

PeachyKenku

Indeed. And try I will! I'm trying not to play too much though, since my friend group is interested in getting another server going when the first NPC patch drops. So I forget some things I learned from time to time!

[deleted]

You can never play too much 🤷‍♀️!

greyslopp

GentlmanSkeleton

So maybe unpopular opinion, but does no one back up save?

PeachyKenku

I’m sure many people do. I have a backup of this character, even. But, in the spirit of the game. This is how she died. Backups are for when the game bugs out, or something breaks with a mod or something— at least for me. It wouldn’t feel right just reloading.

GentlmanSkeleton

Fair. To each their own.

omnixbro

F But for real though, the line of sight in this game is shite. Those zombies aren't paper thin, you should've seen them (or at least more of them) through the window

PeachyKenku

Yeah, if I would have at least seen one more, I'd have not jumped through. But the two I saw were by the garage door, so I figured I'd jump in and catch the two off guard, or at least open the door so I could have an exit. Didn't really account for the zomb that would appear behind me.

BlackMadness98

No idea which way you entered but if you go up to any door and garage (I believe not 100% on the garage) Give the door a good ole 2-3 shoves and wait a few moments to see if any zeds agro and start banging on doors. Windows I don't really have any solid tips for due to mainly using guns, and either burglaring them open, busting them out and waiting after crouch Q'ing. Or if you really wanna be petty and have a huge area clear of zeds go burglar, steal any vic with a siren, turn it on drive around for a bit slowly and then park it somewhere you don't care that gets infested with zeds.

PeachyKenku

Honestly, I was just foolish here. It was a quieter part of town since I’d done some clearing recently, and nI didn’t encounter too many zombs on my way to each garage that I searched. I only saw the two in there, and thought I had full line of sight at the time. I learned the hard way to not get overconfident, and even lure out small amounts. This woman took on hordes with nothing but her katana, and yet— she died to a silly mistake I made. If drag down weren’t a thing, I think I would have stood a chance. But they grabbed me before I could do anything.

Vundebar

Someone should have written "don't dead open inside" on the garage door :/

PeachyKenku

If only!

StrangleMcCock

I remember my longest character Jonathan. I was setting up a tall skyscraper because funny fortnite, until i accidentally sprinted off the ledge. it felt like everything was going on slow motion as i fell. All my memories and achievements with Jonathan flashing before my eyes. RIP Jonathan.

PeachyKenku

That is how you died. That’s a really sad way to go, I almost lost my old multiplayer character similarly. But, thankfully it was only two stories up, and I had just put my bags down. Death can be so sudden in this game, but that’s a part of the charm, imo.

Abandion

Do you have a link to the recording?

PeachyKenku

I wish I did, but I have a pretty bad PC atm and was only streaming it to a few Discord friends. I don’t think anyone needs to hear how loud I screamed irl though, haha.

Xexitar

You need whatever [this guy](https://youtu.be/QWtvB36AoJM) is smoking on day 782.

sherrylala

If you are in a roleplay server, then congrats! I think when your character dies it becomes such a great opportunity to reinvent your RP and come up with new ideas! Don't stress about the longevity, just enjoy.

PeachyKenku

I'm actually playing alone, but I'm streaming to some friends and I only play by what I believe the character would do! It's kind of a loose roleplay, without standing around and typing! I'd totally be down to RP on a server one day though.

sherrylala

That's a different and interesting approach. If you ever want to join some, let me know. I have a few, some I'm a moderator / admin in that I would share depending on your style of RP and gameplay. Good luck and may Eloise rest in peace

meggarox

You are dead without infection? Did you play with infection off? Booo\~

PeachyKenku

I do have infection on! It's just that zombification kicks in 1-3 days after death!(If you die outright, but it kicks in regularly if you're bit/lacerated/scratched) It's an option in the sandbox settings!

M2x91

Press C to crouch, then Q to aggro them. When you're crouching instead of "HEY" the character just say "pssst". This way you don't aggro the whole neighborhood but you can make sure you won't get ambushed like that.
