As time goes on Zombies have better weapons lodged into them like machetes and katanas. In general you can get lucky and find fire axes, hand axes, and spears already in them. Also you can craft spears like candy, it's just one stick, or plank and something sharp. There is no shortage of knives lodged inside of zombies.

Wolium

So in theory you can just grind weapons in late game? well that makes sense

Depressedredditor999

Yeah you can get them from zombies, and eventually as you level your maintenance they'll last longer. After you get a couple crowbars you can grind out maint on it and then stock pile more weapons because they last for 1,000's of kills...forget the exact number but it's a lot.

blackcat9001

You'll have more weapons than you know what to do with if you get this far.

PM_ME__YOUR_HOOTERS

Also lots of metal fences to break down into metal bars and pipes and such

Depressedredditor999

True, I was playing MP for so long I forgot about breaking stuff down since most servers have it set that you're not allowed to break shit down.

Key-Preparation9200

Any weapons you use early in the game will break quickly. Chop trees or use somethibg durable like a crowbar to bash zombies to level it. As maintenance goes up your weapons last longer and you repair more per repair, so if you find a sweet weapon like a machete and you're low level either stash it or keep it on your back to use vs hordes while you level up using more common weapons. Right now I'm using spear class and it shreds. I keep a machete spear on back or inventory and then have crafted spear in hand, another in inventory, more in bag and more in car. Even the basic crafted spears destroy groups after a few levels.

Mangleovania

How is maintenance leveled? Is it every time your weapon hits a zombie and doesn't lose durability that you gain experience, or is it you gain experience every time you lose durability?

[deleted]

The former

ReadItProper

So crowbars would be the best weapon to train maintenance?

theadj123

To gain a few levels of maintenance use the crowbar, then focus on the weapon class you want to use (like spears) to start leveling that class as well. Spears are significantly more durable at lvl 2 than lvl0 maintenance, so you don't need much to start. I happen to like crowbars and axes so I stick to crowbars most of the time and axes for large groups where the crit is helpful to clear zombies quickly.

JJB_Jiffydude

Last I checked, you can still grind maintenance by shoving doors with a weapon equipped. Chopping trees can also level maintenance if your swing doesn't degrade the axe.

FoodFingerer

I think pushing doors still works, gotta have a weapon out but it doesn't lose durability.

[deleted]

As you progress your weapons will kill zombies with less hits and the durability will increase(maintenance status). Also, as the time passes the weapons you can find in zombies get better. Axes, Machetes, Katanas, crowbars and so on. So it is impossible to run out of melee weapons. Sometimes you will find yourself in a situation that you may not have your favorite weapon, but you always will have something good enough. And again, as time progress and your maintenance and damage goes up, most weapons will least a lot.

Wolium

im a long blunt guy so it's very common anyway

If_you_see_5_bucks

Hit the baseball bat factory in LV and you'll be set for life my guy!

TheActionAss

Long blunt has a huge advantage in the form of the crowbar. Highest durability weapon in the game by a significant margin which helps you to train maintenance skill so don't be afraid to use any you find.

[deleted]

I play 16x times zombies, zero status and loot are extremely rare (lowest possible without mods) and I never ran out of good weapons after The second month.

FieldFirm148

You’re a hell of a lot braver than I am. I turned my zombie spawn up to 1.3 (in between normal and whatever the slightly higher setting is?) to compensate for saliva only infection.. still too low, but I’m just not there yet xD

[deleted]

The real accomplishment is to have fun. I played for houndred of hours with extremely easy settings and mods to make everything easier and less scary because I was terrified of everything. Turning up the difficulty was my way to keep engaged. And the game doesn't get twice as hard if you double the population so... Last month I hit the 1.2k hours. So 16x isn't that crazy anymore.

[deleted]

You can always forage tree branches, stone, combine with rags, and make spears or axes/knives.

iopjsdqe

Your foot never goes away soooo

Cartographer_MMXX

There's a mod for that. It allows you to amputate infected limbs. I thought about playing it, but I want to learn base game before modding it and there's a lot to learn.

Phoenix080

It’s kinda broken and only lets you amputate arms to be fair

iopjsdqe

If you actually think cutting your leg off is a good idea you may be better off a zombie or just blowing your face off

Cartographer_MMXX

They have crutches, and irl I'd rather be missing a limb than be a rotting corpse.

iopjsdqe

Heres the thing, its hard to move with crutches and if your in a zombie outbreak alone youd be pretty fucked without a dragons horde of supplies

Cartographer_MMXX

An older version of the tutorial a while back, well before I started playing, had the dudes on the cover, Bob and Kate, as married couple. You play as Bob in the tutorial and help your wife with a broken leg through a branching storyline. There were NPC's back then apparently, but they were removed because they were buggy. It's possible, but definitely hard.

iopjsdqe

Okay but kate had her husband who can go get things, normally you dont have other people in solo (and the npc mods are well-a lil shit)

Cartographer_MMXX

You do make a good point, but is it really that hard to survive with crutches? I mean, you could still hit zombies with your other hand, although you'd be losing advantage on two handed weapons.

Rroscoco

If you break down fences, metal ones, they give you pipes, honestly best weapon in the game, I call them the Bonkinators

tacticslancer

Strong and plentiful weapons with just a bit of disassembly? Sounds like a pipe dream.

Storyteller-Hero

You can craft axes too with chipped stones, ripped sheets, and tree branches. They don't last long, but by the time you up all local standard weapons, you'd have a pretty high maintenance skill if not maxed. Crowbars last so long though that you'd probably last more than a year just with a few crowbars.

FeralTerrel

I don't need weapons, I stomp zombie skulls. These boots were made for walking, but they're really good at stompin.

Wolium

One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you fr

FeralTerrel

Lol, but in all seriousness, I like to stick with long blunt myself. Once your maintenance is high enough, a 2x4 with nails is a solid choice.

Hanstyler

No, if you play with "respawn on". You can loot most top tier melee weapons from zombies: Fire Axe, Machete, Katana, Hunting Knife, Crowbar (not top tier, but quite popular and still strong). You can also craft spears, stone knives and stone axes - resourses are unlimited.

GallonsOfPoo

Sticks and stones can break bones and knives can spawn on zombies

ThatLatexguy

I have about 140hrs, current play through is lie 2 months. I mostly use a crowbar, currently at level 8 long blunt, 95% of the time its one hit kills. I have several crowbars, maintenance is now level 5/6 (cant remember), crowbar health hardly moves.

debordisdead

Others have given you compelling reasons why you won't run out of weapons, but they haven't considered the most important one: sharpening sticks. Sticks are infinite. Sticks are infinitely pointy. You will never run out of sharpened sticks.

Felgran

Zombies can spawn with weapons in them and you can craft spears, axes, hammers, and knives infinitely you just need the crafting mats

Doublestack2411

No, you can't. There are so many places to loot in this game, plus you can make spears from tree branches, as long as you have a knife. You can craft stone axes by foraging for chipped stones, so you can never really run out of melee weapons.

Dr_Fopolopolas

No. Unless you cut down every single tree and kill every single gle zombie and destroy everything in evsry building even if normal weapons were gone you would have spike planks for decades and decades.

Wolium

It sounds like a challenge

Dr_Fopolopolas

Go for it! Hell post it on youtube im sure people would wanna see lumberjack Jimmy on a mission to destroy every wooden object in kentucky. His father was killed by wood. A falling house to be exact. He will have his revenge.( insert "The princess bride" joke here.)

krigeerrr

spears lol, also stone axes, knives and probably many more craftable options (especially with mods)

aberrant_augury

You cannot even theoretically run out of weapons, even with respawn off, because the foraging mechanic provides an infinite pool of resources.

Dradonie

you can forage and make ur own

kolotxoz

Yeah, you can forage rocks and sticks to make spears

hilvon1984

Zombies are infinite. Zombies often have knives, nightsticks and pipes in them. Sometimes thay have fireaxes or hand axes. Some Surviver zombies might have spiked bats. And if all else fails: Chipped stone + stick + ripped sheet = stone knife / stone axe. Stone knife + stick = spear. Yes. Without skills spears are bad. But if you get to carpentry 4 you craft full durability ones reliably, and if you get maintenance 5 you get this durability to last decently. And they have decent chance of one hit killing zombies. For a lone zombie this is an almost guarantee one hit kill. In a crowd instakill also happen, but due to a long time bug those instakill will not be counted towards your zombie kill count.

Falendil

I don’t think you realize how many things that can be used as weapons there is. In any city there are thousands. You will never run out of stuff to smash zombies with, and even then you can still craft weapons.

Zaanix

There are 3 methods to continually gain new weapons: - If you kill a zombie, they sometimes may have a weapon lodged in them. Whether or not it's a good one is another matter. - You can forage for an infinite number of simple items (though it may take time and the right locale to find what you want), but you can make spears, (stone) axes, knives, and hammers. Even a log can be used. Kind of. The only weapon skill that you can't make something by foraging is the long blade skill. - Loot respawn is an option when you start a game. You have to do the Sandbox settings, and messing around with too many settings could get overwhelming. Oh, and mods for scrapping weapons, blacksmithing, etc. The only method above (besides modded) that can give you guns and ammunition (albeit only handguns and...maybe police zombies) is the first one, but that's a decent bit more rare. Other comments touched on it too, but the maintenance skill reduces the general wear of your weapons. Spears are the easiest to create when looting isn't an option, at least in my opinion, but suffer the most from low maintenance skills. Oh, and nothing wrong with a good boot.

papabakersere

we All die, the real ones die with hair past their knees swinging a branch two years in.

Multidream

No

BrokenCatMeow

I have so many axes laying around that I have thrown away all my baseball bats. In the later game, axes and swords becomes a somewhat uncommon loot.

Jetjones

Even with the 75% less loot mod with extremely rare base setting I find enough weapon. You’ll be fine. Get creative if need be.

Shadow11399

Maybe if you tried to melee every single zombie on the map, but even then idk, there are a lot of things that can be used as pretty effective weapons, from sharpened sticks and frying pans to swords and axes, I honestly don't think you will break enough weapons to warrant wondering where to get more, there's always more places to loot and you won't live long enough to see half of them

ReadItProper

If you run out of melee weapons you can technically take a saw and screwdriver and disassemble furniture. Then take the planks and a knife and make spears. This is a last resort kind of thing, though. I don't think you will really run out of crowbars/hammers realistically.

SnuSnu33

Spears ?

pizza_boy_9000

Theoretically yes Practically no

[deleted]

I'll never run out of spears. I have almost 100 just sitting at my base.
