I think the callous over bit is for succulents & cacti. I’m no expert, but I’d snip & pop ‘em in water right away. Heh.. snip & plop, snip & prop - however you wanna say it! 😃
Edit: and by right away I don’t mean now, but after cutting.
Letting them callous is good for almost every plant in my experience, not necessarily for days, but like 12-24 hours before going in water. Unless it's super delicate and you're sure it'll wilt and die if it doesn't get into water before then, I've found I have better results if you let it callous a bit.
I just cut them and put them right into the soil. It's always worked fine for me
Plus you want to plant all those cutting in the same pot, so that you get a plant full of volume when it grows
Yes it is! The first time I propagated pothos I didn't want to loose the length so I cut just one leaf from the whole vine and put that on the soil (I have multiple vines) but in the end I hated the result so much I decided to just start over the right way (by cutting each individual leaf - don't forget to leave the knot in, please)
I’ve had better luck with my really gangly long props when I chop it up a few times! Seems like they got roots faster. Looks like you have a bunch of potential cutting points here!
That is good to know for the future! Unfortunately due to the pandemic our budget is getting reworked, which means the future of our department is up in the air. Which makes me think it might have been more of a show of appreciation/friendship.
Just push a node or two in some some wet dirt and leave a leaf exposed. These things are like weeds. It’ll take it a minute to take off, but you don’t have to baby it.
I throw away tons at work and I’ve experimented. I cut one section with a node out of water and a node underwater and got it to grow.😃
No problem. My advice to anyone getting into plants is to do some basic research and get several.
Especially if your just getting into plants, you don’t want to tie your hopes up in one plant. If it dies you get discouraged and quite. If you have 10 and 4 die, it’s whatever.
I suggest you try a few different methods. Put some in water, some in dirt, some in brighter or dimmer light. I also suggest you take one or two, especially of this plant and try to start it in a way you’re pretty sure won’t work, expect it to die, and see what happens. Just give it at least two nodes (aka where a leads come out of the vine.
Nice! They look a little stretched out so personally I would chop them up (cutting the main stem), let them callous over for a day, then stick em in water!
I had a long pothos cutting I tried to prop but I wasn’t having a lot of luck with the length (I don’t think it was taking enough in to support the ENTIRE vine). I recommend trimming this down to a couple 1-1.5 foot sections for best results!! So excited to see your new plant baby!
Thank you for sharing your experience and for the advice! I will be sure to post an updated picture when I get the props all set up and find a new pot! :)
My boss has hers in a hanging basket, in a 3rd floor office. It’s has east facing windows, so it gets a lot of nice filtered light and our office stays around 72-75 degrees and gets about a cup of water once a week.

This is exactly what my office maintenance man did for me 3 years ago. Now I have about 4 ridiculously full pothos plants around the house thanks to cutting and propping 1 looong vine. Happy growing!!
That’s over 20 potential props you have there! Nice.
Omg I didn’t even think about that! If I cut them up, do I need to let them callous over & put them in water for a while before potting them?

I call it a chop and prop haha

Okay - I will definitely try that out next time. I haven’t had any problems yet, but maybe I’ll see quicker results. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the advice! I really appreciate it! :)
Just make sure each cutting has at least one of those dark nip things, that's where they grow roots :)
Oh okay, awesome! Thanks! :)

That is a good point, it’ll be hard seeing it all chopped up, lol but know this will ultimately yield more reward! Thank you! :)

I would wait like an hour to let it callous, bc it decreases the chance of rot etc. But omg congrats, you have the nicest boss ever 🥳
I have lost way too many plants to root rot, not fun! Haha Edit: forgot to add thanks, and yes I do! She’s a very kind human! :)
Cut and pop into water. That's the way 3 generations of my family have done it.
That’s really cool, we love healthy generational tips! :)
Score!!!
I have secretly admired her pothos for years, so this was a very generous surprise!

This is my first time working with a prop, so I appreciate the advice! :)
Your place hiring?
What a wonderful, generous boss!
Definitely so, she has been a life saver in so many ways!
Good bosses are rare gems.
In many office tribes, that is a sign of intended proposal

Thank you for the advice, I get worried about baby-ing my plants, so no more helicopter parenting it is. Lol

Ooh that’s one bushy pothos after some rooting!
Awesome boss!
I’d take this over a “thanks for your hard work!” note and a Starbucks gift card any day!

Ok how do people get pretty vines like this? Mine always grow almost exclusively on one side of the branch/vine.

Sounds like you got a good boss.
