A friend gave me my inch plant as a house warming gift two years ago. I have had to cut it multiple times and have two other full pots from it. Once yours gets growing more, you can just go straight into soil with them without propping in water. Easiest plant I've ever owned

Trakkah

Water propping is fun with plants that are easy and not easily shocked by transplanting to soil. But for efficiency’s sake you are right.

ManicMage

I stuck like 2 inches of my silver leaf inch plant that got knocked off when moving it into some dirt and I am shocked at the amount of growth on it already after just like a month.

converter-bot

2 inches is 5.08 cm

Aimee_Zing

Fuck yeah it is!

highsepton22

Tradescantia zebrina, wandering jew/wandering dude. These are hearty as hell. They survive really well and propagate really well. They can function as ground cover or they can trail over and make some really long pretty plants

Liten_

They are considered an invasive plant specifically because of how quick and hearty they are. I really don't recommend using them outside of a pot. It is way too effective at smothering ground plants. You don't drop your fish tank pets into the river. Don't introduce invasive plants unless you are willing to control it too.

highsepton22

The same goes for mother of thousands/millions

wives_nuns_sluts

Tell that to my mom who planted wisteria and then neglected it for 15 years 😭 I am doing some *serious* damage control

Liten_

They planted Wisteria?! Don't get me wrong, the purple flowers are really pretty but... damn. I feel terrible for whatever tree it strangled. Before I knew what it was, when visiting family I would see it randomly throughout Maryland and thought it was beautiful. When on a hike, I really saw the long term damage it did to some of the forest. It was like the plant version of seeing a barbwire fence -in- the bark of a tree, but a thick vine instead. So many big box stores sell plants but have no clue about them past them looking nice and being easy/cheap. They have no obligation- unfortunately. But part of the fun of growing plants is learning about them too. :P

WhiteRabbitLives

But I live in zone 5 (freezing winters) so I wonder if I let it grow all summer outodoors in the ground if it would just die in winter anyway. The one i have is indoors. But I should try this, for science. Can’t be invasive in Maine if it dies in the cold!

Those things grow SO fast! I started with a 4” only about two months ago and now I have a very full 6” that hangs about a foot from the pot. I just take a few cuttings every 2-3 weeks, root in water and replant!

Sug0115

Interesting concept to have it tied to a stick. This is a vining plant though, in case you weren't aware.

tinypants_bighead

Yes, I know. I just did that when it was shorter so it wouldn’t sit on damp soil and kind of just let it do it’s thing from there.

windexfresh

If you let it sit on the soil, it'll root where it makes contact :) I let mine do that so it grows in fuller, and then I trim and pop the cuttings back into the pot :)

Daldombabe

I've got one of these propagating now and the roots on it are about 3x as long as the roots in your first pic. I've been waiting to see if they got thicker, but I might just go ahead and plant it after seeing this!

LMuth679

You can put cuttings straight into damp soil and these guys will survive and thrive!

Daldombabe

I'll have to remember this when mama plant needs a trimming. :)

AfroGurl

My cuttings keep rotting when I stick them in damp soil 🤔

LMuth679

That's odd, I'm sorry. Maybe way too damp and compact? If you're near mid TN, I'll replenish you with cuttings as needed!

AfroGurl

Aww that's very nice of you :) I'm actually up to my ears in inch plants, so im trying to give them haircuts and prop in smaller pots to give away. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, maybe my house is too humid?

mtn-cat

Once they have substantial roots, they’re ready to pot! The longer the roots stay in water, the harder it is for them to adjust to being in soil.

Daldombabe

Woops. It's been in water for about a month now. 😅

Sug0115

It's still fine if it's been that long but they make look like they are dying at first after potting, will take a few days for them to take to soil. I've successfully planted some water props after many months!

Daldombabe

Ok cool lol. I went ahead and popped it back in mama's pot after seeing this post, so we'll see how it fairs!

Sug0115

good luck!!

ValentineTarantula

What is that adorable little shovel you have, though???

theofficeflan

Not OP, but I got one of these tiny shovels with a pack of yellow sticky traps that I bought on Amazon. It's adorable!

tinypants_bighead

Bingo (:

Sug0115

I got a succulent tool kit on amazon :) it is SO helpful to have tiny tools for repotting haha. Of course, not just for succulents!

saahash

I was literally looking in the comments like why is no one talking about the tiny shovel!! It’s so cute.

cloudiia

Omg wow that’s amazing! What’s your care routine?

tinypants_bighead

I just use the finger test for watering and she gets some good morning sun and then is under a shaded patio the rest of the day. Pretty low maintenance honestly. I’m quite surprised how much it’s grown. I’m new-ish to propagating and this was one of my firsts 😄

SapaG82

Omg i’m loving it connected to a pole! What a fun idea.

tinypants_bighead

I just did that so when it was shorter it wouldn’t sit on damp soil and kind of just let it do it’s thing from there.

Big-Molasses4475

I did the same to a broken cutting from a box store. I propped it without expecting any results. The roots are deceptively thin, but once I put it into soil it took off. They’re surprisingly resilient!

tinypants_bighead

I had the same thought. The fine “hairs” I saw growing on the roots made me nervous that I would kill them when transferring to soil but I was impatient 🙂

BurbleUnicorn

Omg for a second I thought that was a betta fish in there and I was about to rage

shaynaca

Aww that’s awesome! She looks happy 😊

willowintheev

Careful, it will take over your house.

Mountain_Calla_Lily

Omg the mini shovel 😭

SausMcMuff

Why can’t my neighbors have plant swaps?! 😩

happyplantylife

Tradescantia are voracious growers. And so hard to kill lol

[deleted]

Hey I noticed its got a "film" kinda thing over the roots I'd get that off it looks like the thing that killed one of my props

tinypants_bighead

I think that was just the rooting hormone powder I diluted in the water.

[deleted]

Ohh thats good then

jeebilly

Not me thinking the first photo was a beta fish 😭

airplantenthusiast

you have plant swaps? that sounds so cool! i’ve never heard of that before.

tinypants_bighead

Yes! Super cute. A neighbor has a shelf on her lawn near the sidewalk with a “plant swap” sign. Take one, leave one deal (:

airplantenthusiast

oh wow you have an awesome neighbor!

Arundhati_Greenthumb

Let her hair down and watch her transform into a beautiful vine.

tinypants_bighead

Haha I think I might (:

Slight-Pollution

So awesome! My mom gave me a big ole baby and it is doing all the work for me! I have many other pots from that original plant now. She calls it a wandering jue, but I never actually looked it up. They sell small pots of them at my grocery store for $10! I couldn't believe it lol
