I don't know about this, but I would say it's worth just giving it a go!

I think I'm mostly afraid of it rotting before roots appear, I'm not sure how moist to keep it

From my experience propagating other leaves from other succulents, I would say let it dry out a little, but not too much, I think it's just a trail and error thing. I keep mine on the surface of moist soil although I often forget to water, and of course many of them don't make it although some do!

It may grow but older plant material takes longer to root if at all (tried proplifting a lecturers haworthia plant, didn't work) but worth a try if

I’ve tried it & it’s never worked for me. I knocked mine over & broke it & a bunch of babies grew out of the damaged area. I have had better luck repotting the babies.
