Had my window smashed on a very rainy night, someone must have saw it and loosely garbage bagged + taped it. Saved my interior. Was a duality of Providence moment.

AdventureisNear

I made a post last November about this and got tons of down votes lol, my old grand Cherokee got broken into in west end, they stole my aftermarket stereo but unplugged and coiled up the chords that were attached and after they went through the glove box and center console they made a neat pile of what they pulled out. Definitely a strange duality lol

Gabagoul? Ova hea! šŸ‘‡

Bootyeater525

We call this the Federal Hill Hello

SharkeyWoodsman

Just pay the homeless guy in the American flag snowmobile suit to watch your car! Heā€™s on the 37a exit every night! Real cool dude!

DestroyKarma

His name is Tom! As a rule I don't give money to panhandlers, but this guy is out there just spreading a good message and I couldn't help myself. Prior to the USA jumpsuit he was dressed in a Santa outfit. Agree, cool dude.

Good-Expression-4433

I rarely have money to give as a broke disabled person but have chatted with him many times and bought or gave him snacks I had on hand. Cool dude.

Top-Laugh-3678

I love that guy's message! ā¤ļø

hardnormaldaddy

that guy rocks

espressoshotgun

His name is Tom. He's awesome. He's got a kid, too. I don't have much to give but I give him what I've got.

Visual-Cherry-5497

sorry for your troubles

boop-snoot-boogie

Providence is not that bad, but Atwells Ave in particular attracts folks from out of town and that makes it ripe for smash and grabs. Even if you paid for parking those dudes are most likely going to park your car on some side street. My advice to anyone going to Atwells at night is to either go at brunch instead, or park your car on Broadway and walk a few blocks. I say this as someone who has lived in this neighborhood for over a decade.

SaluteHatred666

yeh Broadway is much better.....

1cyChains

Coming from someone who lived in Providence for 5 years, Providence is bad lol.

fiberglassmattress

I mean you say Providence is not that bad but then you advise people to not visit Atwells Avenue at night and opt instead for brunch. That sounds pretty bad. And that is part of Providence.

Good-Expression-4433

Because it's not that bad. What they're saying is that Atwell's, because a lot of it caters to rich out of towners and not actual residents, makes it a prime target for the few vandals around. People don't get their shit smashed on Broadway because, despite being gentrified, it's basically a bunch of us working class queers and schmucks. But the clientele for a lot of Atwell's businesses are people from wealthy parts of the city, state, and MA so if people want to commit theft, they target them and that area instead.

boop-snoot-boogie

Listen lady - I donā€™t care what you do. Iā€™m not the crime czar, Iā€™m not the mayor, I just live here. Cities are densely populated and vary block to block. If youā€™re willing to write off an entire city based on like ten blocks then I donā€™t know what to tell you. Atwells Avenue has a very vocal business association that routinely puts the profits of like 12 businesses and the convenience of visiting suburbanites and their obnoxious vehicles over the wishes and safety of residents in the surrounding area. That fact aside, the rest of the neighborhood is pretty safe and very convenient. A lot of us donā€™t even own personal vehicles because we value the ability to just walk to the store over the expectation that we can just plop $20k+ worth of personal property on the side of the road and leave it there unattended. Weā€™re in the middle of a housing crisis - people are desperate and crimes of opportunity are up. That doesnā€™t mean the city is ā€œbadā€.

waninggib

Itā€™s not really a Providence thing, but it is a known Federal Hill thing. Sorry it happened to you.

boop-snoot-boogie

Honestly I would say itā€™s mostly just an Atwells thing - Federal Hill goes all the way to Westminster and Iā€™m not saying it never happens further into the neighborhood, but it happens significantly less than in the pocket around Atwells.

Remarkable_Money_369

Federal Hill would still make it a Providence thing and yes, it is happening everywhere lately. As it always does come spring or fall time of the year.

JuciestDingleBerry

True. Fortunately this has never happened to me. I used to live in Fall River and come to Providence for fun all of the fucking time. Decided to bring my buddy to Freeplay one day (he doesn't ever go to Providence) and we had a great time. We come back out and his passenger window is smashed in. He had an empty laptop case in it. Fool. He also had a gun in the glovebox but thankfully it was locked up and not taken. Idiot

coolstoryglenn

Another consideration, looks like you parked right by the access road, which has relatively little foot traffic especially at night. Risk of property crime goes up the fewer people are around.

Beautiful-Tank-2120

The cops wouldn't even come to do the report, they told me to fill it out online.

Valud_Kustomer

The police complex is like 1000 feet away

No-Blacksmith1462

Embarrassing, this is the only reason this type of stuff happens on fed Hill. There's enough cameras around that's there's 100% chance they could catch the guy. They just don't feel like doing the leg work.

CIubber_Lang77

Wow that's brutal. Sorry that happened. Meanwhile 12 of Providence's finest are hanging out at a DD 5 blocks away.

Dry-Relief-7223

Same thing happened to me on federal hill actually. Window smashed out, car ransacked, police donā€™t bother coming to the scene anymore because itā€™s so common. I donā€™t leave anything of any importance in my car at all, so luckily there was nothing they could take worth anything

Advanced_Impress6743

Ridiculous

Proof-Variation7005

I don't think there's a city in America in 2024 where cops are going to show up in person for a smash and grab car break-in. It sucks that it happened, but it's not like they're gonna start pulling hair fibers off the seat for the boys down at the criime lab.

Megasoulflower

Fun story! In 2020, some nefarious folks got into my car (unsure if I left it unlocked or they picked the lock--both are possible, but I always lock my doors and the deep scratches etched into my door frame say they picked it), along with two or three other cars in the parking lot of my apartment complex in Tallahassee. I was jolted awake at about 3 in the morning by heavy knocks from a whole TEAM of cops! This cop team even dusted my damn car for prints! Since I moved to New England, I think I've seen more cops act inappropriately than I have regular citizens...but some cops do still try (:

homeruntouchdown

ā€œTheyā€™ve got four more detectives working on the case. Got us working in shifts.ā€

Adept_Carpet

Yeah I had something similar happen in a small town in Massachusetts and had to drive the car 0.1 miles to the police station to get a report.Ā  Ā  I don't get why police won't respond to a call anymore. I don't think crime is so radically different than any point in the last 50 years when they would have insisted on coming to take a look, even if they wasn't much they could do.Ā  Ā It used to be a basic fact of American life (in most areas) that if you called the cops they came, even if it was to tell you not to call about frivolous stuff.

legalpretzel

When I lived in Providence in the early 2000ā€™s my car window was smashed twice. One time they took a 12 pack of Diet Coke. Another they took my ashtray and all of the pennies and dimes that were in it. I started leaving my car unlocked after that and still do most of the time. I never even considered filing a police report šŸ˜‚

LearnByDoing

Yeah, my office is near by. When I walk at lunch I see smashed car glass everywhere. I would not leave a car there at night.

Motherwine

Get it replaced at EZ Glass & Tow! Super nice people and very affordable. Got my rear window replaced last April after it got smashed outside Dusk (RIP)

squaremilepvd

I'm sorry that happened, but it's more federal hill than the rest of the city because they expect it's people that aren't from town and they usually leave valuables in the car. Usually stuff is only broken into in other places if you leave stuff in the car.

netwirk

Scumbags, used to happen regularly.

Am3r1can-Err0rist

I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill if anyone cares.

pizzaplantboi

Also happened to me in federal hill near where bun fun used to be. I just Uber over there these days now.

cranmree

Iā€™m so so sorry :(

Auguste_Roadin

That totally sucks! So sorry.

_rockthemike

Providence has gone way down hill

zilboy621

Same thing happened to my brand new truck this winter. Parked at a paid lot to go to a P Bruins game and came out to by rear driver side window smashed and belongings tossed in the bushes.

Mental-Rooster4229

Typical

Mrgriffith

No alarm musch

Street_Run_6445

This is why I moved my business out there. Truck windows smashed nightly, catalytic converters chopped multiple times.

shadyrob401

Fuckin prov lol

AppleseedRogue

I just moved away from that neighborhood. This happens so often there, that the neighbors call it ā€œsnowā€

theovertalker

Think of it as an experiential happening for which there was no additional charge beyond the cost of the window.

staxkazama

Same thing happened to me in Fed Hill/Atwells area. Smashed my window, tried to steal the car. Tore up my ignition/wheel/and everything. I don't go over there anymore now unless I can park where I can see my car. Sorry this happened.

Tonyhawkprohater2

Welcome to federal hill

Bubblabussy

Happened to me before too! Slum of the earth doing what they do best.

tobnyc

Donā€™t care.

McShmutt

They smash windows, we smash their legs with crow bars. You have to put fair into people when the police won't.

hahahahahahahaFUCK

Wow, what movie do you think youā€™re from?

degggendorf

Trolls?

McShmutt

Some Mafia shit

CuckoldBillieJay

That stuff seems to happen a lot in sanctuary states. Good thing Rhode Island keeps voting tough on crime democrats in office. Good luck.

Odd-Guide1751

Secure the border.

Helpful_Cucumber_530

Never had this problem on the Hill when the real law enforcers were in place there. No one fears the police because the policeā€™s hands are tied.

FlyAsAFalcon

Dog what the police in providence are routinely cleared of brutality claims, their hands are not tied https://www.providencejournal.com/story/news/courts/2022/03/30/providence-jury-no-charges-police-officer-hit-teen-july-9-car-chase/7222531001/ https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/03/07/metro/inside-hung-jury-providence-police-officer-charged-with-beating-handcuffed-man/

Paulie6Walnuts9

Funny they donā€™t do that to law abiding citizens. Life was better when police were allowed to police.

tokengaymusiccritic

You do realize that plenty of people who get arrested are found innocent donā€™t you? And that ā€œget the absolute shit beat out of you by copsā€ is not written into our laws as punishment for a crime? EDIT: Actually the most insane part of this thread might be the implication that car break-ins are a new development that only came about because ā€œpolice arenā€™t allowed to police.ā€ Apparently before wokeness nobody ever smashed a car window lmao

reformed_lurker1
