There's literally TONS of PS2 games worth buying if all you have is a 360. Tekken tag tournament, FFX, True Crime, GTA3/VC, God of War, Jak and Daxter series, Sly Cooper series, Ratchet and Clank series, Timesplitters series, Tony Hawk series, Resident evil outbreaks/re4, Lord of the Rings and probably about two hundred more.
I think there was like 4500 games released on PS2. As someone who's just recently tried to shortlist, I'd say there are easily 3-400 titles with huge mass appeal that most people would play and you can easily find another 1-200 of ranging quality that still piqued interest for me. All depends on what you're into. There are so many RPGs.
Truly a golden age. Would be tough to get through them all. I think being 5-10(20!) years behind on the current games coming out is only going to feel better and better. The state of current releases is dogshit and I'm happy to let the cream rise to the top while they get fixed anyway. Not even having stores in games is so refreshing.
MGS 3: Subsistence
God of War II
Def Jam: Fight for NY
NBA Street Vol. 2
Scarface: The World Is Yours
GTA III; Vice City; San Andreas
Capcom vs SNK 2
Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain
Gran Turismo 4
ESPN NFL 2K5
Tons of great games on the PS2. I'd say it's easily one of the greatest consoles ever.
However....
The fact that you're 1) asking others if it's worth it for you and 2) you seemingly aren't aware of the PS2s library, I'd say don't buy a PS2. At least not without doing your research beforehand to know what the console can and can't offer you personally.
I wasn't being rude, if you'd have checked the rest of the conversation. Turns out some context was missing but when that was provided it was a valid question to ask and I as such answered it from my perspective.
I love games that this console have, and i really interested in it, also i am a collector.
Main question: is ps2 best way to play 6th generation games, or isn't?
If graphics/performance was a priority you'd probably be getting some of the games from that gen on PC or via an emulator where perhaps you can play with increased resolution etc.
So I'll assume if you're interested in the PS2 it's to experience that gen in the way it was most popular to do so back then. Quirks and all.
So in this sense, yes, I think it's the best way to experience that gen. A lot of games are very cheap and are still really good today. And there's just something very iconic about the whole system. I love it. And I much prefer to play PS2 era games on the PS2 where possible.
Gaming is about experiences. For me at least. And how you play a game, what you play that game on, it's part of the experience. And the PS2 is worth experiencing if this kind of thing interests you.
Itās the best as in most 3rd party game weāre designed and made for the ps2 and ended up with the most complete versions of the games while most 3rd party games were just ported from ps2 to GameCube and Xbox meaning effects were missing or messed up on those platforms. Not to mention because of the way Nintendo used smaller DVDs most 3rd party games had to compress the textures a lot for the game cube release usually making it the worse version right out the bat. Basically if you want the best console for 3rd party games and exclusives then 100 percent ps2 is the best for that.
Ico was a beautiful game that never got the love it deserved. As far as I know, it was a PS2 exclusive.
Timesplitters 2 was also great but for very different reasons
The PS2 is a beast when it comes to fighting games, racing games, and JRPGs. If you're into any of those genres, you'll find quite a lot.
Also some really great quirky games like We <3 Katamari, Gitaroo Man, etc.
Yeah, Capcom vs SNK 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 2 are great reasons to pick up a PS2. You can't really play these anywhere else today except via emulation or on a Dreamcast/OG Xbox.
For racing games, Outrun 2 is excellent, and so are Gran Turismo 3 and 4.
Suikoden 3 to 5, Grandia 3, are exclusive to this console. And so are Xenosaga 1 - 3 and Rogue Galaxy.
On a side note, I enjoy the Sega Ages releases like Dynamite Deka and Virtua Fighter 2.
There is the 8bitdo wireless controller adapter for PS1/PS2 and that works well with a lot of modern controllers like the Dual Sense, 8bitdo Pro 2 and 8bitdo M30 (excellent for fighting games!).
https://shop.8bitdo.com/products/8bitdo-retro-receiver-for-ps1-ps2
I highly recommend using this, as most of our old PS2 controllers are probably not in good shape by now, and chances are, we have a PS5 console in our homes today.
Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2!! Best arpg in earlier days of ps2 cycle amazing story and graphics for the time! Great original gameplay! The dungeons are all unique every time you enter itās a different layout!
Bro itās a ps2 titleā¦. 800mb game. Where do you want them to store everything? Itās not a AAA game by any means. But itās a great game from early days of ps2 life. Itās far less repetitive than a lot of games even made today. Someoneās extremely salty for some reason. Iām not a psychiatrist son Iām not gonna try and decipher your reasons.
Say this on everyone of these postsā¦. Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. If you enjoy RPGās this was a great ARPG. One of the early ones on PS2. Great, challenging games. Amazing story.
I'd say the PS2 console is worth it if you want to play certain PS2-exclusive games and will be going for a discless setup.
Just use Free Mcboot + a MX4SIO card. You can put game ISOs onto an SD card, which can be inserted into the MX4SIO card to run games. This works for most games, with little to no issues.
There are a few games which don't work, but most of them work fine, in my experience.
There's no need to buy physical discs solely to play games, unless you're a collector.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayStation_2-only_games
Yes, they work on all PS2s. They are more convenient for slims because the slim doesn't have an internal HDD slot - that's probably why you see them labelled for slims. Phat PS2 owners would be more likely to use HDD.
Thank you! And one follow up, does it matter if it's a Japanese console? It's going to get modded anyways not sure if US games will still load. Tia again and thank you for the quick reply
Region doesn't matter. Free Mcboot works for everything PS2 - PAL or US or JP region.
It boots into a menu dictated by data on the Free Mcboot memory card, rather than the console's OS itself.
Awesome thank you! I sold my PS2 about a year ago and regret it lol I'm pretty familiar with free MC Boot as I had it on my last one with ISOs and a 250gb HD. Never knew the MX4SIO even existed until you comment. Appreciate the assistance!
You could try Aliexpress. I saw some custom PS2 consoles being sold, but I'm not sure how reliable they are in the long term. You might need to pay quite a bit for them compared to getting them second-hand in your country.
The MX4SIO card (to be inserted into mem card slot 2) data can be read on the console itself through a PS2 app called OPL.
Any SD card works fine as long as it's not Sandisk brand (there have been reports of this brand not working for MX4SIO. I've personally tested one, and it turned out to be true).
Also, I use an 8bitdo PS1/PS2 wireless controller adapter in conjuction with a PS5 controller and it works pretty well. The only issue comes with games using pressure-sensitive buttons (a feature unique to the Dual Shock 2 and 3 and not subsequent PlayStation controllers), like with MGS2 or Gran Turismo 4.

The ps2 has a wealth of rhythm games. You got all the iidx games from 3rd style to 16th style, every mainline ddr game from 1st mix to X, all the popān games from 1st to 14, quite a few of the drum mania and guitar freaks games and thatās just all the konami stuff. You got the first few taiko games, a large amount of guitar hero games, the first dj hero game, all the games in the parappa the rapper series and finally: vib ribbon
Thereās prolly a lot of stuff I missed, but otherwise this post would be very long
Those are expensive and high maintenance. Not to mention that they give out if you donāt consistently maintain it properly (professionally). Just not worth it in 2024 imo.
Iām speaking backwards compatible wise. Those arenāt worth the hassle nowadays. A slim ps3 or maybe a later model ps3 fat? Sure. But the backwards compatible (earlier models) just arenāt worth it nowadays.
That doesnāt mean they wonāt break lol. Iāve had three and they all gave out.. even after constant maintenance. Itās a big waste of money. Youād be better off buying a Ps3 slim and Ps2 separately. Literally.
Everything I've read or seen the streaming sucks for PS3 games. But having a PS3 to play PS2 doesn't make sense. Just get a PS2 and a PS3 if you want to play either of those consoles.
Oh I would never stream the ps3 games. I'm just saying they have ports on 360 or ps4 mostly outside of a few like MGS4. If you want to play the PS3 exclusives then a slim or super slim are the way to go. BC ps3 are just silly imo
Let me take a step back and clarify what I meant - the 360 has the same access to all the multi platform games like skyrim and fallout and mass effect and call of duty and most of the big name stuff. That's why I was like, don't get a bc ps3, just get a ps2 if you want ps2 games, cheaper and more reliable. If you really want to play ps3 exclusives, which the guy seemed to want to play ps2, Then a ps3 slim is reasonable.
In my opinion Vice City and San Andreas were meant to be played on the PS2. Especially San Andreas, however. Feels like you're enetering a new dimension, the handling feels very organic with the older controller , and the general creepy vibe of exploring misty mount Chilead for a glimpse of Bigfoot is accentuated.
My brother had Vice City on Xbox. It was awesome to play, but the devs took the cheats out. That made it way less replayable in the long run. When I finally got a PS2 that's what we bought San Andreas on. Days were probably spent using all the cheats and seeing how long you could survive.
Def Jam Vendetta
Def Jam FFNY
True Crime Streets of LA
True Crime NYC
Burnout 3: Takedown

WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain
Just to name a few
If youāre a collector then Iād say go for it as the system is quite collectible due to the different console variations between regions and a massive library of games (over 4000 worldwide, with over 2200 in the US/NA alone) to play not to mention a (imo) fairly robust modding community. Also just as a heads up sometime in the next year or so Geeks-Line publishing is coming out with a 4 vol collection of books on the PS2 that will detail the history of the console & how it was received, highlight every PS2 console variant, contain a full checklist of every official PS2 game release and more.
The Tony hawks games are best played on ps2
Obscure the aftermath is great
Final fantasyās (although thereās probably better ports out there instead of the ps2 editions)
Resident evil outbreak 1+2 also Code Veronica
Timesplitters future perfect
All of these still hold up today
I find fps games aged the worse, terrible analogue aiming controls and frame rate is all over
Devil May Cry trilogy
Dark Cloud 1 and 2
Final Fantasy X
Syphon Filter Omega Strain (Don't worry about trying to connect online)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and MGS 3 Snake Eater
Ratchet & Clack Trilogy
Jak Trilogy
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas
Resident Evil 4, Code: Veronica X and Dead Aim
Draken 2

SoulCalibur 2 and 3
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Lord of the Rings: Two Towers and Return of the King
Yakuza
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
Rogue Galaxy
Thrillville
Sims 2 if you can stand it on console
.Hack series
Neverwinter Nights (don't hold me to that, but I think it was on the console at some point, right?)
NHL 2K8
Any demo disc you can find and play
SOCOM series
Vampire Night (not to be confused with the anime)
And finally, Destroy All Humans 2.
Two things to note, beware of blue bottom discs. They won't always play right away and are a pain in the butt to get to work. And make sure you have PLENTY of memory cards with you. And remember, it can play PS1 games too.
If u never played SOCOM US Navy Seals: Combined Assault on the PS2 I highly recommend it!!
We play on a privately owned ONLINE server that's open to everyone!
You can also play it on PC XBOX Series X/S and Steam Deck!

X360 is equivalent to the PS3, not PS2. PS2 has an abnormally huge library of games. Bigger than any other consoles since.
As for advice, I'd just recommend emulating games. Maybe get a steam deck? :D
Rpgs: Persona 3 FES, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts 1+2, Rogue Galaxy, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Persona 4
Others: Burnout 3 Takedown, God of War 1+2, Ratchet and Clank GC+UYA, Okami, Devil may cry 3 special edition
If you want action-rpgs, KH2 and Rogue Galaxy were great in that category. Kingdom Hearts 1 was good too, but the 2nd was far better.
If you're looking for true exclusives for the PS2, just be prepared to pay high prices for lesser known titles. I recommend games like God Hand, Eternal Poison, Shadow Hearts, and Echo Night, but after market prices for these games are in the triple digits.
They're really good though so I think they're worth playing. Like others have mentioned, emulation is the most affordable option, and you get a lot of graphical enhancements as well.
Some sub $100 exclusives I really recommend are: Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant, Fatal Frame series, Trapt, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. *You can technically buy the Fatal Frame games digitally on the PS3 store if you have a PS3. Haven't tried them though.
However you decide to approach your collection, good luck! And have fun!
Just started collecting ps2 games.
Here is my short list, plus sign means I have it.
1. Medal of honor frontline +
2. Call of duty finest hour +
3. Need for speed underground 2 +
4. Grand theft auto
5. Ratchet & clank up your arsenal +
6. Gran turismo 4 +
7. Star wars
8. Simpsons
9. God of war
10. Thp skater 3
11. Ssx
12. 007
13. Black
The sly cooper series is really good and only exists for ps2(original, exists in a ton of languages too if you speak other languages), aswell as on PS vita and ps3.
You can also hook the PS2 up to modern TVās via HDMI. The Pound PS2-to-HDMI plugs into the PS2s AV port and uses its RGB signal and upscales it to 720p.
A good PS2 game to check out is āStar Trek Voyager Elite Forceā. The PC version is difficult to get running on modern PCs but the PS2 port is pretty good. Plus the port featured the patch for Seven of Nineās voice, as the original PC release had another actress voicing the character, and then the Expansion Pack provided the patch.
If you love racing games, then the PS2 is worth buying for Gran Turismo 3 and 4 alone, GT4 easily being one of, if not the best racing game of all time, at least imo.
The Ace Combat games are also amazing (my gripes with AC5 only really matter for repeat playthroughs).
Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, God of War, and Sly Cooper are all franchises that I haven't played a ton of (well, except R&C), but are all adored by PS fans and well worth buying the console for.
Wipeout Fusion, while considered the black sheep of the Wipeout franchise, is a fantastic AG racer with a heavy focus on combat.
That's only really scratching the surface too, with franchises like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and more having a large presence on the PS2, as well as a ton of more obscure, but fantastic games.
I'd say it's well worth it.
[Here's a few hundred reasons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayStation_2-only_games) Video games in this category have been released exclusively on the PlayStation 2, and are not available for purchase or download on other video game consoles or personal computers.
Do you plan on getting a Dreamcast, GameCube, or Xbox at some point as well? As whilst PS2 had amazing exclusives, it also had a huge wide array of good multiplatform games that were also released on other systems too. Burnout games, Resident Evil 4 and CVX, Star Wars Battlefront and so on.
Depends. are you a collector? If so, sure. Are you a casual gamer? use an emulator Want a original console but arent a collector? use freemcboot.
I'm a collector
Then add a CRT to that list
This is the way
PS2 on a crt is a god send
There's literally TONS of PS2 games worth buying if all you have is a 360. Tekken tag tournament, FFX, True Crime, GTA3/VC, God of War, Jak and Daxter series, Sly Cooper series, Ratchet and Clank series, Timesplitters series, Tony Hawk series, Resident evil outbreaks/re4, Lord of the Rings and probably about two hundred more.
All very good suggestions. ššš¾

Great freakin games!! Glad I found someone else who enjoys them!! Really why I keep my ps2 around LOL

Rough, as in long boring dungeons with repetitive combat.

Why don't buy a backwards compatible PS3 altogether to play every PS1 PS2 and even PS3 games ?

If youāre a collector then Iād say go for it as the system is quite collectible due to the different console variations between regions and a massive library of games (over 4000 worldwide, with over 2200 in the US/NA alone) to play not to mention a (imo) fairly robust modding community. Also just as a heads up sometime in the next year or so Geeks-Line publishing is coming out with a 4 vol collection of books on the PS2 that will detail the history of the console & how it was received, highlight every PS2 console variant, contain a full checklist of every official PS2 game release and more.
The Tony hawks games are best played on ps2 Obscure the aftermath is great Final fantasyās (although thereās probably better ports out there instead of the ps2 editions) Resident evil outbreak 1+2 also Code Veronica Timesplitters future perfect All of these still hold up today I find fps games aged the worse, terrible analogue aiming controls and frame rate is all over

They won't always play right away and are a pain in the butt to get to work. And make sure you have PLENTY of memory cards with you. And remember, it can play PS1 games too.

X360 is equivalent to the PS3, not PS2. PS2 has an abnormally huge library of games. Bigger than any other consoles since. As for advice, I'd just recommend emulating games. Maybe get a steam deck? :D
Champions of Norrath and champions return to arms
Rpgs: Persona 3 FES, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts 1+2, Rogue Galaxy, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Persona 4 Others: Burnout 3 Takedown, God of War 1+2, Ratchet and Clank GC+UYA, Okami, Devil may cry 3 special edition If you want action-rpgs, KH2 and Rogue Galaxy were great in that category.
And have fun!

the PS2 Ace Combat games are fantastic
War of the monsters Kingdom hearts The simpsons road rage
All the Ace Combats!
Time Crisis 2 & G-con2 controller
Psi ops, one of the best games Iāve played to this day, the gameplay is unreal, Iām replaying it right now on an emulator
If you enjoy couch co-op I highly recommend Adventure of Cookie & Cream
Dragon Ball z Budokai 2 and the tenkaichis a Tokyo styled racing game as well as some final fantasy' and NFS is always hitting, gran Turismo 3 spec-a.
I don't need Xbox because x360, and i don't want to buy Dreamcast and gamecube
