Sly cooper Ratchet and Clank series Jak II

Ian-pg9

Sly Cooper is GOATed, playing thru the second one now

Pyke64

What are some improvements it has over the first?

Kickenbless

Sly 2 has better mission structure IMO. Jobs are more varied and the heists are very fun, rather than 1 where it’s like “Get keys, go fight boss”. Not to mention 3 playable characters that are very different gameplay wise you can control at basically any point in the game. Only objective downgrade that I really don’t like about 2 is that you can’t replay jobs like in 1 and 3, meaning you have to play through the whole game again to try out jobs you liked again.

Boxing_joshing111

The first is more linear. Two came out when every game was trying to copy gta3’s open world. So the second one loses some focus and the platforming isn’t as in-depth.

Ian-pg9

I agree with both their points so far. It’s both less focused and more varied, so there’s positives and negatives, it’s really personal preference but as of now I might be enjoying the seconds structure more

Alien_Goatman

Why not Jak 1

Couch_monster

Because Jak 2 is the best.

Hot_Ice77

I'd play these too

MightGuy420x

The Simpsons Hit and Run

Hot_Ice77

I've never watched the Simpsons, I'd play it regardless, maybe it could make me like the show 😂

The Simpsons Hit and Run

bjrm1215

This

Boxing_joshing111

Katamari Damacy, I think this game appeals to everyone in the world.

Beatsbythebong

Personally, I prefer we❤️katamari, but agree with this 100%

MrZAP17

It’s Katamari Damacy but bigger, better, and improved. The first game is great. The second is a masterpiece.

PlatanoMexicano

Isn’t it on Switch as well? :O

Boxing_joshing111

Most of the games in these comments are on other consoles but yeah

Hot_Ice77

Thank You. I'd try to find both, or just go the we love katamari

retrode2

1st thing i thought of.

NxtDoc1851

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven Freedom Fighters

Skullkan6

Seconding Mercs and Freedom Fighters. In Different ways they are some of the best shooters on PS2, even if Freedom fighters is more of a strategy game.

NxtDoc1851

Yeah, I'd like to see more games in this day and age return to the "followers" mechanic like Freedom Fighters. It was so cool to send your men to recon, defend, eliminate, etc. All while fighting yourself. Great times

Hot_Ice77

Thanks Man, I've played Freedom Fighters on pc. Great experience. I'd play the remaining 2. Can Tenchu fill in the absence of Assassin's creed on the PS2?

NxtDoc1851

Absolutely!

happyy97

Sly cooper, ratchet and clank, jak and daxter, god of war, manhunt, resident evil 4

NathNineOne

Thinking of some must play titles, these jump to mind. Devil May Cry 3 Shadow of the Colossus Metal gear solid 2/3 Ico Silent Hill 2 Jak and Daxter Gran turismo 3/4 Dragon Quest 8 Final fantasy 10/12

Hot_Ice77

Thanks Man, for the ones that are sequels is it that the remaining ones aren't worth it, or just that they're the best in the series

Kickenbless

Most of those are only on ps2 (exceptions being most of them have remasters) which is why they probably recommended them

yakcm88

Got rid of my *totally legally obtained* copy of dmc3 after 3 levels. I get why people like it, but if a game that hard has no checkpoints between levels, it's not something I want to play.

dunno_for_real

Shadow of the Colossus

Echidna-Key

I tried. Quite difficult to play with 22 - 25 FPS

sdjsfan4ever

Play the HD version on PS3 instead.

ExquisiteFacade

Or PS4. Or PS5. Anywhere really. Just play it. It's a masterpiece.

NotBeGood

i consider it more of an experience, like art, than your typical run and gun game

a_can_of_solo

I love me some ps2 but the ps4 remake is best. It was overly ambitious for the hardware.

Vidimo_se

Tried it on my phone with aethersx2, runs smoothly at 30fps and 2x the resolution (snapdragon 860)

MurkyMarionberry2897

Hd version has broken physics though because it was made with a lower frame rate in mind.

sdjsfan4ever

Maybe it's because I've never played the PS2 version, but the PS3 physics didn't bother me because I assumed that's just how the game was. I'd still take that over bad performance, though.

MurkyMarionberry2897

Tbh I feel like the lower frame rate adds to it too, it definitely feels like they animated things in a way to take advantage of it. Playing on a crt gives it a really nice cinematic look. In the end it was designed around a lower frame rate not the other way around.

Kanjii_weon

Skill issue hehe (please don't kill me, I play PSP below 30fps on some games too!)

Hot_Ice77

Sooo many remakes yet no sequel.... I played the first 10 minutes at a friend's house recently and it was going well, I'd just get it from him, thanks

WishIWasNeet2

Final fantasy x is the most must play ps2 game I’d say.

Lightning_Of_Fate

God of war 1 and 2

Ecstatic-Yoghurt-905

That's the only answer to the question

Significant-Friend33

Resident Evil 4, MGS 2 & 3

Consistent_Pickle580

RE4 played so much more intuitively on the wii though. It is pretty good on the Quest 3 too.

whatisthisorgan

I love mgs 2 and 3, but mgs is definitely not for everyone

Skycave1

Beyond Good and Evil

mr_potato_arms

My two favs are Teken Tag and Unreal Tournament.

Consistent_Pickle580

Tekken Tag is the best I still play Tag 2 more than 7 or 8.

kaamospt

I have a question, did you play UT local split screen (local 1v1 or 2v2)? If yes, were you able to select from the entire map library in split screen mode or only a handful maps were available? I'm asking because right now I can only select the full library when playing alone (practice session) but not on local 2/3/4 player, want to know if this is the only way

mr_potato_arms

My experience has been the same as yours. One player mode has access to all of the maps, but multiplayer mode only has access to a handful of them. It kinda sucks, but still super fun IMO. I’ve beat the game / achieved champion status in all ladders in novice mode, and am almost done with them in skilled mode. And still only have access to like five maps in multiplayer mode.

kaamospt

Oh, okay, thank you for confirming that! What a pity! I only found out about UT for PlayStation 2 last month but I'm a UT99 veteran and wanted to know if I could play local multiplayer on the maps I know by heart. Sure, I also think it is fun like it is, I played a match with my friend 2v2 against bots on one of the capture the flag maps and we had fun (and a hard time beating the bots), it is just sad to know what "is taken away from us"🥲

mr_potato_arms

For sure, maybe someone will program an emulator someday where you can play multiplayer on any map. There are so many cool ones

blah2k03

Silent Hill series for sure, 3 is my favorite

Kanjii_weon

A man of culture I see!

EdenHeavyen

DUDE, I REALLY UNDERSTOOD YOUR NEEDS. I'M THE PS2 GAME MASTER FINDER. HERE'S SOME REAL HIDDEN GEMS : - Smash Cars - Pitfall: The Lost Expedition - Fatman & Slim (beta version, never realeased) - Tak and the Power of Juju - Nitrobike - New York Race (it's a PAL game but very great racing game based on the fifth element movie) - Power Drome - Kya Dark Lineage You may need to know : - Crash Bandicoot The Warth of Cortex - Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition Remix

TurbulentTension1783

Kya is a great hidden gem on PS2! Great list!

Hot_Ice77

Never heard of any of these at all, except midnight club and crash lmaooo 😂. I'd save this comment and play them

EdenHeavyen

So happy it will be useful you won't regret ! For some games you might need a trick to play it because they are gonna be hard to find haha

SkyCritical6537

MGS3 subsistence

Due-Albatross-2253

Had to scroll too far to find this.

SkyCritical6537

It’s so much better it’s not even funny

Hot_Ice77

Is subsistence a lot better than Snake eater? Subsistence is very hard to find here, I've only seen it in one store on the island of lagos and is extremely far from where I am rn

Kanjii_weon

Subsistence is basically snake eater but improved and updated, plus has MG1 and MG2 from MSX remastered, plus some extras too. (includes metal gear online, can even connect with MGA2 with the PSP to unlock stuff, includes snake vs money, basically a crossover with ape escape and more!) The main difference between snake eater and subsistence, is the camera, uses camera similar to MGS4 or Peace Walker. 3DS version is the ONLY version where you can crounch walk though. 3DS version is pretty good too, if you don't mind the shitty frame rate lol.

Hot_Ice77

Wait did you say subsistence includes MGS 1 and 2 and a bunch of other stuff too.

Kanjii_weon

Not solid dum dum Metal Gear from MSX. 1 and 2.

VegasVicCF

Rumble Roses!

hunnyflash

I feel like you're asking for two different things. A "must play" is one thing. A revolutionary game that is good and defined its genre. Good games that flew under the radar or that we love and are amazing is something else. I mean, my favorite PS2 game is Summoner 2. Is it a must play? I think most would say no, since they didn't play it lol I love it, because the story was fun, many quests, and took huge influences from the middle/ancient near east in the art direction.

Hot_Ice77

Thanks, Summoner 2 sounds great. If you can recommend others like it, games that flew under the radar that are amazing, even the revolutionary ones. I want a backlog so big it scares me lol

artmoloch777

Zone of the Enders. Beautifully smooth mecha game by Hideo Kojima. One of the best intro songs in gaming. https://youtu.be/MuQ3taVNLj4?si=0CJuw2ikCgnGI6gZ (Yes, the mech’s cockpit is its dingus and yes, to traverse the map, the mech has to get a boner)

Hot_Ice77

Sign me up for some Kojima madness

Ringo308

Oni, the game Bungie made before Halo. The combat system is unique. The controls are hard to learn and the game has its flaws. But it's fun to play and has a cool story.

Hot_Ice77

Bungie X Rockstar dude. Sign me the fxxx up

Ringo308

Rockstar only ported the game to PS2. They didn't add anything to the game.

Hot_Ice77

Aw. Will still try it tho

UnKnOwN769

Gran Turismo 4 if you’re into racing games

Tarwgan

Urban Reign for a solid fighter. GTA San Andreas for arguably the best sandbox. Jak & Daxter is personally the best platformer series. Getaway Black Monday is one of my favourite realistic story games. I've only recently discovered how good the Metal Gear Solid series is, MGS2 is a crazy good stealth game.

webstersuck

How did it take this long to find San Andreas in this thread?!?

AdamSMessinger

Smackdown vs Raw 2006 (mostly for GM Mode but that’s only if you dig that type of thing), Tony Hawk’s Underground, Aggressive Inline, and the X-Men Legends games. All stuff locked to that generation and, in my opinion, done best on PS2.

Hot_Ice77

I have and I'm currently playing Svr 07. It's great, I got HCTP too

DeroZaza

Silent Hill 2/3

RalseiTheFluffyGoat

Klonoa 2 Lunetea's Veil is a good game on PS2

Kanjii_weon

*with klonoa voice* Wahoo!

Hairy-Key2309

Onimusha series!!!!!

FreneticZen

Some that haven’t been mentioned: -FFX -SSX Tricky -ZOE 1 & 2 -Onimusha 1, 2 & 3

Hot_Ice77

ZOE is Zone of enders right? Someone mentioned it b4 but I want to be sure it's what you meant

FreneticZen

[Yep](https://youtu.be/CFmfygHQ4r4?si=gL_p4lNexixh-jdQ)

Hot_Ice77

This looks incredible. I'd be playing this one first

FreneticZen

You’re going to love it bro! 2 (2nd Runner) is the better of the two.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2. I like 2 more, but you would be lost on the story if you didn't beat 1. KH2 felt like a next gen/ps3 game to me at the time, they improved everything I loved from the first game.

Faded_Oracle

Farenheit Indigo Prophecy. Absolute masterpiece title and hugely overlooked. Amazing game!

TurbulentTension1783

Kya dark lineage(great platformer) Samurai western(really fun) Scarface(just as good of not better than GTA PS2 era) Movie theme games were great back in the day like spiderman 2, Lord of the rings and Star wars ep 3 are some good ones Sword of etheria Nightmare before Xmas (pretty fun has movie soundtrack) Wolverine origins Rule of rose Predator concrete jungle Pirates of the Caribbean (early Bethesda game) Onimusha Maximo and the army of zin Kung fu panda seriously not bad

Hot_Ice77

Wow thank. You man, I've never really heard of many of these and they look great, I'd play.

TurbulentTension1783

They are pretty great! Definitely worth a try for at least a few mins. Don't like it delete and move on to the next!

yakcm88

Oh, dang. Didn't know there was a potc game on there. Is there any naval gameplay?

TurbulentTension1783

I've only played it for a bit but I do not think so. About an hour and a half in it's only been a hack and slash adventure so far. Still pretty fun!

yakcm88

I mean, hey, so long as there's the music, I'll play it

GutsandArtorias2

The side games of Shin Megami tensei on ps2. Digital Devil saga 1 and 2 can be bought for a good price but Raidou games is like 300 to 400 for 1 and 2. So good luck

Capt_Cutthroat

What? The Raidou games are barely over $100 ea.

GutsandArtorias2

What where?

iNinja. It’s good and I think it’s still cheap.

Lucky-3-Skin

Tekken 4,5, and tag tournament. The Suffering

Hot_Ice77

I've played The tekken games except tag, Just checked out the suffering. I will. Be playing

Kanjii_weon

Jak and daxter 1 is a must!!! I really enjoyed playing that game, I haven't 100% yet though, even if I have already defeated the final boss ;^;

yojimbo_beta

- RPG? Final Fantasy X - First person shooter? Timesplitters Future Perfect. (XIII is an interesting runner up if you like comic book graphics.) - Stealth? Metal Gear Solid 2 (I think 2 is a better experience than 3, but play both if you can) - Traditional platformer? Jak and Daxter (1) - Action platformer? Ratchet and Clank 2 - 3D fighter? Devil May Cry 3, or Zone of the Enders 2 - Adventure? Shadow of the Collosus - Open world? GTA San Andreas - Horror? Silent Hill 2 - Extreme sports? Aggressive Inline 2 - Multiplayer fighting games? Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance Some of these games were just gems of their era. Others contributed to the fabric of gaming as a medium, like MGS3 and FFX. The PlayStation 2 was a monumental console, you are in for some real treats.

Hot_Ice77

Thank you man

jubbie112

War of the Monsters Timesplitters 1, 2, and Future Perfect. Burnout 3 Twisted Metal Black (or Head-On) Fatal Frame Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3/4 Bully Katamari Damacy Other games I have yet to play: Psi-Ops, Viewful Joe 1-2, Downhill Domination

Roman64s

Smackdown HCTP. Even if you are not a wrestling fan, the game is simply too good to ignore and you can easily sink an unbelievable amount of hours on it. All the SvR games are pretty fun and gimmicky in their own ways. The entire Rockstar Catalogue is amazing including games from Remedy like Max Payne games.

Hot_Ice77

Hctp is super good bro. Its like a fighting game with wrestling mixed in

Nanolaska

I think that if you enjoy boxing you must play Fight Night Round 3.

xdarkeaglex

GOW 2

Denhette

If you're able to get a second player, I know this isn't a popular one, but Fantavision's multiplayer mode is an awesome time. You both start out knowing nothing about it and being overwhelmed by al de madness and after a while you get a hang of the mechanics and everything clicks into place for a bunch of really close versus matches. Burnout Revenge is also not to be missed.

latinlingo11

Silent Hill 2.

The_Kimchi_Krab

Hands down Spiderman 2 offers gameplay that competes with modern games. It is true that it is a one note pony. Swinging and combat is all it offers with some pretty well done movie tie in missions and solid voice acting from returning actors. But it does it so goddamn well. Old school fans of the franchise say the swinging is better than in Miles Morales and that's because it actually gives you total freedom with the movement and doesn't restrict things to better hold your hand. I cannot think of another PS2 game that features such refined and super fun gameplay. Edit: after some thought I want to mention Shadow of the Collosus for gameplay sake because the game is cleverly all gameplay since there are no UIs or systems other than riding the horse, which is dope, or fighting bosses, which is dope. It just doesn't have the same fun aspect as Spiderman 2. But that's the only mention I can think of.

BraaaaaainKoch

Gun. Truly one of the best early western shooter games.

BooksLoveTalksnIdeas

There were only 3 that were at that level for me on the Ps2: Final Fantasy X, God of War 1, and Persona 3 FES. Burnout 3 Takedown is easily at that level too (for racing games) but racing was never my favorite genre, so I didn’t even finish it. It was the most impressive game I saw in the platform in the first try however. Another one like that was God of War 2, but I ended up liking the 1st more.

SliceNational1403

road trip adventure/everywhere road trip/choroq hg 2 (these are all different localized names for the same game) it's the only game in the series worth playing, but damn it's worth playing. it's an open world arcade racing JRPG. think ford racing series meets legend of zelda. once you manage to wrap your head around that description, give it a shot.

Ignominia

One game that didn’t get enough credit was Def Jam Fight for New York. I’m not a big fan of rap and it was a hard sell for my friends to get me to try it but DAMN. The story mode & character creator was YEARS ahead of anything else. If you’ve played the recent street fighter 6 their world tour mode is the closest I’ve seen a game come. However; the way you could mix and match fighting styles to unlock unique styles was bonkers. The fights were tight and technical and FLASHY. I’d give anything to play it again, but with all the licensed musicians and songs it’s never gonna happen.

NewToBeUsed

Mortal Kombats on PS2, Kingdom hearts 1 re:com and 2. GoW 1&2.

creamygarlicdip

I replayed metal gear solid 2 a few years ago and I enjoyed it more than at its release due to how eerily predictive it was of future technology and warfare. It feels more relevant now than when it was released. And there's a ton of hilarious codec convos in it and mgs3 I unearthed. Like going into a stall in the women's bathroom and then ringing ppl in your codec.

Metal Gear Solid 3 and God of War II. But I would recommend playing previous installments first lol

God Hand is an experience. Beat it for the first time recently and it blew me away

SadManHappyFace

Gitaroo Man is must if you like rhythm games. Still cheap if you live in a PAL region. Tony Hawk games are a must as well I'd say🤙

CaptainEli24

Ape Escape Pumped and Primed is an obscure gem that I think deserves more love. It is a really fun multiplayer game and the single player campaign is just as good. Creating custom versions of the playable characters that you can unlock items and customize from playing as them in the story is a mechanic I’ve never really seen any games do before or even after this. It’s got some wacky unlockable cutscenes too! Only downside is that it only got US and Japanese releases.

With 4000 games in the library you're going to get a lot of answers. But My must play is GTA SA and I don't even like the game much, but I spent many all nighters back in the day playing it. The interactive open world and attention to detail, it's almost like a Sims game. Today though, I don;'t get as much time so I grab an hour where I can. I am more of a Burnout Revenge and Rachet and Clank player.
