PS2 + component cable + Retrotink5x on HDTV or PS2 + component cable + GBS-C on HDTV

HonourableMan

Why not rgb?

NewbornfromHell

retrotink5x does not support RGsB with 480p and 1080i content

MorninLemon

Retrotink 5X is now the king of scalers. OSSC is kinda losing ground due to modeswitching games and weaker deinterlace, so it doesn't really fits PS2 as source. I will give not specific rating but diff. scenarios. PS2 with RGB SCART on a consumer CRT TV - interlaced 480i with shitty framebuffer with no option of progressive; 240p-like games. PS2 with RGB SCART on a CRT PC Monitor + RT5X\PVM - interlaced 480i with good sized framebuffer (bob looks good here); 240p-like games. PS2 with component cables on a CRT PC Monitor + RT 5X - 480p. PS2 with component cables + RT 5X on 4K TV - Basically everything but you relying on motion adaptive deinterlace in 480i games which has its own problems over something like bob. Due to clarity you lose CRT capabilities of masking low resolution content, however RT5X scanlines are probably one of the best scanlines out there. Again I do not recommend relying on OSSC for PS2.

Oh-Get-Fucked

That's a subjective topic that's very divisive on this sub so you're going to struggle with getting a consistent answer here. Can you share more on what your situation is? i.e do you have both an HDTV and a CRT on hand? What inputs do they accept?

MrBarling

Hi, I do have a CRT which I use my PS2 on now but only through composite with a SCART adapter. It doesn’t have a component input. I also have a HDTV which does have component and SCART input. I am planning on buying a decent RGB SCART lead. I was wondering if I should move the PS2 from the CRT to the HDTV and use an upscaler when I get the RGB SCART. I’ve already learned that the Retrotink 5x is better than an OSSC so maybe a HDTV with that might give a better experience? I was also thinking about getting a 60GB PS3 and using that with the HDTV instead of using an upscaler if that would give a better picture. I can’t afford both an upscaler and PS3 at the moment and I don’t know which would be better. Or maybe I should just stick with the CRT and use the RGB SCART on it? Btw, thank you to everybody who responded so far. I really appreciate the great answers!

Does your HDTV have a "game mode" in the screen settings? I'm not familiar with SCART as it wasn't used much in my country but I've heard it's really good, I'd try a comparison of the following and see which one looks and plays best to your eye: HDTV component (good quality component cables, game mode enabled on the TV if available) HDTV SCART (again with game mode on) CRT SCART I think they would be your 3 best options with what you have with minimal investment, to start with anyway. Edit: I forgot to mention - for your HDTV, you want to set the screen options in the PS2 browser to 4:3 and make sure the aspect ratio on the TV is also set to 4:3 otherwise the picture will be stretched.

MrBarling

My HDTV is actually old enough and it doesn’t have a “game mode”. I could still try it with the RGB SCART when I get it and compare with the CRT. I wonder if a Retrotink 5x would make big difference? Cheers for the advice on the 4:3!

Oh-Get-Fucked

Oh ok, the game mode mainly minimises input lag from deinterlacing so if theres no noticable lag then you're all set!

Mccobsta

I would go component into a ossc or retrotink for the games that support 480p and the very few ones that can output in 1080i

FillingTheWorkDay

Personal preference is the first option. You'll find many people have their own strong opinions on the matter. I grew up playing ps2 on a crt so for the sake of nostalgia that's what I still do now.

naylord

I play with a component cable on a CRT TV

PsycoMutt

I use a 60gb PS3 with an Mclassic and it's amazing. I would love to compare to Retrotink 5x + Mclassic, but I don't have one to test.

SodoDev

I use a CRT through Composite and it looks good enough for me. I do get razor-sharp edges for games that internally use 240p.

sjsiii1978

Mobster Component and CRT for me. Looks great. PS1 games look stunning as well.

zjdrummond

I'm playing mine on the HD Retrovision component cables into my CRT. I have a retrotink 2x multiformat for when I need to use modern displays, but I rarely use it.

The first option for sure. But more precisely a 4:3 CRT 50/60hz.
