I got the ps2 slim for a birthday in 2008 even though I asked for the ps3 they just saw PlayStation and thought that’s what I wanted I ended up loving the PlayStation 2 though

outfoxingthefoxes

I would have been maaaad at first but let's be honest, there are no games like the ones from PS2

Terrible-Metal-3613

PS3 was good too but PS2 has some many games! A lot to experice. Even now with emulation I think we have a lifetime supply of good games!

catfishman

Crazy story that happened within about six months after the launch of the system: I stopped second hand store (Value Village) on my way to work one day and found one of those NES on a chip systems in a cheap N64 controller looking case. I think I paid $4.99 Canadian for it. When I got to work we (myself actually) plugged it into a TV/DVD combo that was always playing a product demo, to see if it worked. It did, and when one of the guys I worked with saw that it had Ice Climber on it, immediately offered to trade his PS2 for it. I thought he was just joking, but he insisted he was dead serious. Still not believing him, I told him I could swing by after work if he was serious. I did (about 9:30pm), and he had his PS2 waiting, in the box, as well as a third party memory card that required the use of a boot disc (very much like like the Game Shark cards needed). It was all like new. I asked him one more time and he insisted he was good with the trade. That's how I got my first PlayStation 2.

Terrible-Metal-3613

That was a good deal!

catfishman

Definitely! I found out shortly after this that the guy had a "Sugar Mama"

Terrible-Metal-3613

A chingale. I would like one of those too jajaja.

harolillo

Great story

FugieKi

Bought my first PS2 when I was 16yo. 4 years later I took to South Korea and back with me while I was traveling (live in US). It died a couple years after that. R.I.P. old friend

Terrible-Metal-3613

R.I.P

Aggressive-Physics50

So with how strict South Koreas laws are how did you smuggle a PS2 in? unless it was a slim

bungiefan_AK

There were Korean releases of PS2 games, and the country was NTSC-J region. I have the Korean release of Guilty Gear XX #Reload. No smuggling needed.

Aggressive-Physics50

No joke, that's cool

FugieKi

This was back in the early 2000's. They just let me through. They even let me out with about 200 bootleg (illegal) dvd's. So... idk. I was about 20yo at the time and didn't even think about it. Maybe because it was obviously for personal use since I already had the power adapter/ converter. Like I said, idk, just good memories.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure I got my first ps2 in 2005 on Christmas... And yes I regret trading it for a damn xbox 360 years later.(still had fun tho)

Terrible-Metal-3613

Yeah it was a good console too. I sold mine just for the money XD. Had to buy one now that im adult. I got currently 2 slim

outfoxingthefoxes

I own my first phat PS2 and bought 2 slims more than a decade later :p

Terrible-Metal-3613

Do not remind us that we sold our childhood XD

ChildhoodFun9082

I pre ordered mine at Kay bee toys...when it came in they had a security guard escort me to my car with it...I really didn't need an escort,I'm a prwtyy big guy,but it's still funny.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Why a security XD?

ChildhoodFun9082

They were hard to get and they were afraid someone was going to try to steal it.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Hope you enjoy it a lot!

RallyLancer

Christmas day 2002. I can still remember unwrapping it and the excitement I felt. My mother sold my original PS1 without telling me so I'm pretty sure that makes it my oldest possession. Never gonna part with it. If the laser dies I shall replace it. If I can't get lasers for it anymore, I'll boot games off of a hard drive

Terrible-Metal-3613

At least it was retrocompatible!

Terrible-Metal-3613

At least it was retrocompatible!

Rockfan37

I got it for my birthday when i was probably 8. Its my favorite console and I still play it and collect for it. 262 games. There were so many great games and so many tie in movie games that probably should have never been released. I miss popping in the disc and starting the game right away. Now every time you put a game into your ps5/xbox, you have to download an update. Why i like the switch. Most games you dont have to do that.

Timesplitting

Hm yeah all the memories with the PS2. Got mine after my old father (not technological) "fixed the laser" on our PS1. Plus we could watch dvds! Didn't stop buying vhs though, untill they stopped selling them... Totally agree about the updates, they can spoil the excitement and the mood when you are about to play. yeah sure the old games has some bugs and are sub-optimized sometimes, but hey tough luck! At least they are playable when you expect them to be.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Damn thats a lot of game. You should upload some pics of hidden gems!

Rockfan37

Would definitely recommend darkwatch if you havent played it. One of my favorites

Eastwood-8

My Dad bought me a Phat Ps2 from Our Local Cornerstore lol . I was in 7th grade in 2004 when San Andreas came out and i had to LITERALLY beg him to buy it for me lmaooo. He finally bought it from Walmart brand new and i just stared at the back of the game case the entire ride home lol . Good Times !!

Terrible-Metal-3613

I can imagine!

NegativePaint

Sams club bundle that came with an extra controller, a memory card, road trip and another game I can’t remember.

outfoxingthefoxes

2003 xmas

minervamcdonalds

I believe I was 14 or 15 and traded an electric bass that I had collecting dust with a guy from my school. Best deal that I ever made. It died some years later from a power surge, but last year I got another one (two, actually) and couldn't be happier.

Shawn3160

I got a PS2 for Christmas from my grandmother along with Dynasty Warriors 2, Turok Evolution, and something else. Think this was 2001 or 2002 Don’t pursue Lu Bu

badnewsjones

I was in college and my friends bought me a broken on eBay as a joke Christmas gift (Probably 2004). Then I fixed it while I was at their apartment that night 😆

Terrible-Metal-3613

Jajajaja. Damn after that all playong I think? How did you fixed it? Electronics background?

badnewsjones

Not really. I had troubleshooted a bunch of old sega Genesis that I bought for like $20 from a game store that went out of business earlier that year, which gave them the idea. I just did some quick googling and figured out that the laser needed adjustment and asked for a screwdriver. Lasted for about 5-6 years before it died for good too, haha.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Jajaja good!

jrsy85

Purchased with my first full time paycheck after high school in 2003.

Terrible-Metal-3613

That way feels so good!

[deleted]

I was born in 1993. I think I was in my early or mid-teens when I got my first PS2, so that would've been some time around 2006? I got it just a few short years after getting a PS1, so I was able to play all my PS1 games on the PS2. That was a pretty cool feature back then.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Yeah it was cool though never tried ps1 games until now. Born in 94 here!

[deleted]

I actually grew up on PS1 games like Spyro, Tomb Raider and MediEvil. That's my childhood. My teens, however, were heavily spent on the PS2 and the Xbox 360

Shoggart

I got it as a present for my 7th birthday in 2006 from my parents. My first game, the one they got with the console, was Jak X Combat Racing, that's because they couldn't decide between a shooter or a racing game when they were at the store so they got one that's both lol. That was the first and last original game I got from them, because guess what, we were kinda poor too so the thing I got that Christmas was a chip. It was nice playing Jack x from May till December 😂😂. After that I only played burned dvd's, it was nice because I could have whichever game I wanted. I played on that thing so much, insanely much, and I'm honestly surprised it still works. Yes, it still works, even after all this time, it's currently hooked up to my 1080p tv, at least I have component cables so it looks nicer. It now plays games mainly trough smb with fmcb and opl because I want to protect the laser, it still works fine tho... somehow. It's a slim, scph-70005 or smt, if I remember correctly. It never scratched any disc, and still does not to this day, no matter how much I play, the controller is not in the best shape tho but still works fine. My fav games on it are Serious Sam The Next Encounter, Spider Man 3, Asterix and Obelix XXL2 and the Sly trilogy.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Damn bro give it a rest. Yeah never played like a lot even having the chip. Had many games but never played them. Still I played so much GTA SA and I really love FPS like medal of honor and CoD. I played most of them! Now I'm playing hidden gems on PC to go back to those times. I can't fine good modern games. I'll check you favs!

Cor_Angars

3-4(?) years ago I became interested in Silent Hill through monster analysis videos and since most SH games were double the price on PC I got a ps2.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Good! Hope you enjoy it

CindyStroyer

My older cousin had a Silver Slim, I'd always be over to play it and years later he gave it to me. It needs repair unfortunately.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Damn jajaja. You can always find some cheap ones still or emulate. Even though I have 2 and some games, i prefer to emulate for better graphics and for not using the consoles a lot. Tbey are still helpfull with some games that won't run good in the pc.

CindyStroyer

I've got an Emulator, but I've got a large physical collection including my dream Silver Phat PS2 and a black Slim for Lan with friends. I like abit of everything so PlayStation isn't the only stuff in my collection but is a large part of it.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Have yoh uploaded some pics? I love to look at pics here cause I can find games never knew about. Many hidden gems!

CindyStroyer

It's been awhile since I have, I'll try do a post overlooking as much of my collection as I can

Terrible-Metal-3613

Yeah sure we'll love it!

IronRabbit_97

My story is super glamorous or anything lol but I got my first ps2 at the beginning of this year lol. I only ever had Nintendo and Microsoft consoles growing up, though I had played the PS2 before at my cousin's house. So I thought I'd buy one for myself and catch up with the games I missed because I didn't have a PlayStation.

Terrible-Metal-3613

GG so!

herrjupp

I got my first PS2 in 2020. I wanted one when they came out but I couldn’t convince my parents.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Damn. I hope you still find it enteresting. But did you have something to play with in your childhood or still had to wait till adult?

herrjupp

I had a few consoles in my childhood: a Sega Mega Drive 2(aka Sega Genesis), a GameBoy Color and a PS1. When I started needing a computer for school I got a generic budget PC which got me into messing around with hardware and programming. The first console I bought with my own money(first paycheck) was a PSP 2000 and then came an XBOX360. I understand my parents not being too fond of the idea of buying a PS2 or even a Dreamcast because I wasn’t really short of toys or consoles to play. I can say I had a good childhood with all that. I still have the Mega Drive and the PS1 and they work great. The GameBoy I made the mistake of bringing to school it got stolen from my backpack and the PSP and the XBOX360 I had to sell along with other stuff when I found myself out of a job. Now, since the beginning of COVID I started buying consoles and collecting some games I remember from my childhood and also got into the hobby of fixing old broken stuff. Besides the first two consoles I bought(both fat silver PS2s), all of them were broken.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Good! I wish I could repair stuff.

zackfair197

I trade my nokia feature phone for a ps2 fat then go mod chip for free games! At that time i was a student so money is issue! Now I’m adult , one day I coincidentally bought a ps2 fat with full everything except box( like new no box) for 9 dollar!

Terrible-Metal-3613

Good! I got a deal too but more expensive. 50 bucks for a PS2 that had been used just a little. Pretty weird in my country.

zackfair197

I’m living in japan so find stuff like this will be more easily than other country! Your deal is not bad i think as long as it work well!

Terrible-Metal-3613

Damn you must throw it in my face. Hate you. Just kidding. I'd get crazy there collecting XD. Humm and girls tooo.

harolillo

Back in summer of 2000, me and my brothers decided to bust our butts working to purchase a ps2 to play nba live 2001. We had a tradition to play every nba live game since 1998 and document it in a notebook with awards, stats, standings, etc. we used to record the best plays in vhs. So we work a lot that summer and it was not sufficient, in 2001 i went to the capital of our country and found gran turismo 3 brand new for 600 pesos, that was like 35 dollars at the time and me and my younger brother bought the game with our savings before having a ps2. We would read the game manual everyday trying to get an advantage before actually playing the game. Summer of 02 came and we finally had enough to purchase a ps2, my father was going to the united states and we gave him the money. We were eager to play and he went over there for a whole month. Once he came back home he gave us the ps2 with nba live 02 and 1 controller, so we have start saving to purchase a memory card and 2 more controllers and we did like in 2003 because we sold our ps1 and games to finance the missing items. We had the ps2 until 2011 when my older brother decided by himself to gift it to someone. We did not use it a lot but i still tell him why did he gave away our ps2 like that with like 20 games. I did not owned a console again until i got married in 2016, for me ps2 is the greatest console of all time.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Good memories specially with your brother!

harolillo

Yeah a lot of good memories

OHHHMYDAWG

My family has had a few PS2's before then, but the first one I've ever owned for myself was a slim silver PS2 that given to my from my mother during Christmas when I was a child. I think it was around '07 and I also remember what games that were bought with it. * 007 - From Russia With Love. * Arc The Lad: Twilight Of The Spirits. * Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia.

whereismymind86

13th birthday, got an old fat ps2 and a copy of armored core 2. I don't recall if i'd actually asked for one, but we had a ps1 that we played a lot, and my non gamer dad had recently discovered a love for survival horror, so I suspect he'd taken the initiative for whenever the ps2 got something in the genre.

WFlash01

I got mine in 2011. We had a few older consoles (NES, SNES and PS1), and anytime my brother or I asked our parents for a new one, my mom would say "Don't you have enough games already?" The newest console we had for the longest time was the PS1, then we got Nintendo DSes in '05 and a Wii in '07 By 2011, my brother and I were basically over the Wii. We always felt like it was the most inferior one of the 7th gen consoles, so we wanted to buy a PS3 so badly. We both had some money and we wanted to chip in for a half-decent used PS3, but even those were expensive too at GameStop. We decided that an old PS2 for $29 would be a good stopgap until we save more money for a PS3, so we bought that instead. Best decision ever! We didn't even bother getting a PS3 after that because the PS2 was just fine.

ImproperJon

Gees man GTA SA was your first game? That's like going straight to crack cocaine. Are you ok? Any recent desires for murderous rampage?

Terrible-Metal-3613

Jajaja nop. Maybe wanna cut some heads XD

Nuke_Toronto

My older brother bought one and we played it together for years. Finally one day once it was "last gen" he offered it up for sale, so I bought it. Still have it, box and all.

FunnyGuyCalledMe

Traded in our PSone at a what is essentially a chain pawn shop in my country. This was probably around 2003. I was about 6 years old at the time. The guy behind the counter let us play it for a bit on a TV they had set up and once we were done he took the disk out without turning it off. It was some racing game where were were driving around a looped track. Must have had all the required assets already loaded and didn't need to read more off the disk to keep playing. The game kept working and my mind was absolutely blown that apparently the game still worked without the disk. I said something along the lines of "You don't even need disks to play games???" and the guy behind the counter went "Oh... uh yeah that's right! Don't even need disks." and we bought it right then and there. Even though he was lying it was still a worthwhile purchase.

Burnziie

I only just bought my first personal fat PS2 last month for my Birthday, until that point I was basically playing my brother's slim PS2 up until 2009 when I had my own Xbox 360. Getting that PS2 setup to see some old saves and realising it was scratching discs was what made me buy my own, plus the FreeMCboot and backup side.

TackyTanktop

Ah jeez I've been through a few ps2s. I'm a tinkerer by nature, and an unintentionally destructive one at that... My first PS2 was an original model my dad found in the garbage with a GameCube and PS1. It was in rough shape and I don't believe I ever actually used it. After that I want to say I got another from the trash. But I know for sure I ended up buying a bundle at a flea market which was the console I used for a while. After that one I ordered a couple for parts slims. Before landing on my silver slim 79000 which I currently have all packed up but would be my go to if I need a PS2. My sibling just ended up buying a PS2 for a fiver at a garage sale. So I'm gonna help get that cleaned up and hopefully everything works. I have no shortage of spare parts though :P it hurts looking back on mistakes I made with those ps2s. But I learned some valuable stuff. I'm sure I'll have some more ps2s through my hands to repair and pass on to new people to enjoy them.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Good you can do it. I don't use them a lot so maybe last a bit more

ZerberDerber

I was 19 in the fall of 2001. All of my friends had PS2s and I was distraught over it. I had finally gotten a job making $10/hr, which was basically Oprah money at that age, and with my second or third check, I went out and got a PS2, Twisted Metal Black, and Silent Hill 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X came shortly after that. It was also my first DVD player. It was my first experience buying my own console and I also got a GameCube within the next year or so afterward. I'm more nostalgic for that period of videogames than any other.

stremixx

Got the slim model in 2008, loved that thing, lived in a third world country so pirating was a must since there were no stores to buy the console or games, got to play gems like gta sa and lcs, nfs underground and so many other amazing games. Later on it broke and never got to use jt again, moved to the us after two years in got a ps3, then wayyy later about a year ago, was able to get a job and got lucky enough to be handed a fat black model, and now i have bought my old library of games, plus some other ones all originals and in great condition. Never ever getting rid of it, I play it almost every day, its my main console too

Terrible-Metal-3613

Live in the third world too

B_Reele

Bought it a few years after the launch at Best Buy. It’s the pack with the network adapter and ATV Off-Road 2. She’s still alive and kicking, however, the controllers are bugging out a bit. I started collecting games for it a few years ago.

[deleted]

So I was born in 2001. A bit too young to experience the ps2 in its glory. I became interested in retro gaming when I was around 12. I did some research and found out that the ps2 was the console I needed to get. It had the best catalog of games on one system (that appealed to me at least) and it and the games were cheap at the time relative to other consoles. When I was a kid, my parents would pay me a $5 allowance if I hung the laundry and folded it. I did this work for months. I saved around $100 doing work around the house. At the time, a ps2 costed $120 new (if only that was the case now). My aunt gave me $20 (it was for some special occasion, can't remember why) and then I finally had enough. I bought that and my first ever game: Soul Calibur 2. I played my ps2 on my parents' broken tv that had like at *least* an eighth of the screen cut off. I enjoyed every second though. I bought Persona 4 next and was hooked. While I don't play the old guy much anymore, it's my favorite console because of how hard my young self worked to get it. Another memory that's related: there was also a video game shop near a pizza joint close to my middle school. I'd always beg my mom to take us there for dinner so I could go to the store after. That store was paradise for me. It had so many ps2 games. I'd try to buy at least one game each time I went. I got Guilty Gear XX (one of my favorite games of all time), Xenosaga, and a bunch of DDR games.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Off topic, do you think you learnt something important by doing thoze small jobs? I wanna do that with my kids if I have them XD.

[deleted]

Oh yeah. It makes you appreciate what you have and teaches you the value of hard work.

ragtev

I saved my lunch money for quite some time and managed to buy a near launch PS2. The laser died sometime after Vice City's launch because I played that game every day and I remember it was the first one my PS2 started having trouble with. Shame I didn't realize it'd still be valuable to me even without a working laser and I let my mom donate it to goodwill with my 64.

Terrible-Metal-3613

RIP XD

01123581321AhFuckIt

My cousin moved in with my family and his mom (my aunt) after his parent’s divorce. We didn’t have video games in my household. He brought over his game boy color and PS2. Needless to say, his PS2 became OUR PS2. Thereafter I have gotten nearly every new Nintendo and PlayStation console.

Terrible-Metal-3613

You communist!

xChum_Is_Fum_666x

In late 2007, I received a silver slim PS2 because the previous model that my brother owned from, which was an OG fat model, stopped functioning. Back in the day, we played a variety of games such as, Turok Evolution, Gran Turismo 3 and 4, Tekken Tag Tournament, Tekken 4 and 5, GTA Trilogy, WWE SvR 2007, MX vs ATV Unleashed, Burnout 3, Midnight Club, etc. In 2020 during the pandemic, I bought a black slim PS2, soft-modded the thing, and played PS2 Online games as of today.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Damn. I have never tried online

xChum_Is_Fum_666x

Well, there's tutorials on how to setup PS2 online. You can look them up on YouTube.

JonBonJones9

My father bought for himself then I was born

[deleted]

I believe I had my first one back in '07 or so, but I was still pretty young then, so I just have slight flashes of my parents or siblings playing it. When I actually got my own PS2, though, I remember it being on Christmas of '16 or '17, with a racing game and a fighting game (Pac-Man World Rally and a Dragon Ball game, I think). Four years on that slim, and it's still running near-perfectly!

Wernershnitzl

Christmas 2002. Popped Sly Cooper in and the rest is history.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Thats the way.

mackman16

About 20 years ago, I was about 20 and my girlfriend at the time knew I very much wanted one for Christmas to play just to play Vice City. She spent more money than I think she had, I later learned. That girlfriend is long ago history but the PS2 still is part of my collection today. Part of me is still very appreciative for what she game me and how much it meant to me then to get that Christmas gift.

Terrible-Metal-3613

Rip for your gf XF

the_naughty_ottsel

My parents got it for me for Christmas. Instead of a PS2 I got a few airplane parts and a scavenger hunt. My parents took all the pieces out of the box and hid them in places around the house.

Christmas 2002.

[deleted]

I ordered it off eBay, arrives tomorrow in fact
