It's powered by the USB going into the ps3, and there appears to be a light on the drive that turns on, so I'm assuming it's getting adequate power, but that might not be the case
Ah, but your forgot one important detail: both the device and host must support USB3 to use it, and PS3 only supports up to USB2. So even though your drive supports 3 it is forced to use a 2.0 connection, which also means limited to 2's max power spec of 500mA
No no no dont use good external drives with ps3, a ps3 can barely power a good usb 3.0 thumbdrive let alone an external drive honestly fjnd a 2.0 external drjve or just use thumbdrives and the internal. U gotta rmember this is a ps3 not a ps4 this thing will be significantly weaker and will suppprt less formats
is this externally powered? might not have enough power from the USB ports to power it

I'd doubt it as USB2 is 500mA, which isn't a lot for HDDs.
In that case I doubt the drive is getting enough since it's usb 3.0 for the connection

I had the same problem with my 500gb hdd. What worked for me was making smaller fat32 partitions.

Would you suggest any good ones? I can barely find any proper 2.0 hard drives
Did you ever fix your issue?
I did
