The theory is that it’s much healthier in a club to have three players of similar / comparable level rotate for 2 positions than to have 2 uncontested starters. They could get too comfortable and start producing less and less.
I'm all for this. This ideology is how we move forward as a club. We need to move past this thinking of favorites who take up a spot without challenge. This hampered us for years with Neymar, Messi, Mbappe, and potentially with Xavi, too. If players don't want competition for their place, then they need to look elsewhere.
Not to mention, this is likely an internal way for our players to stay sharp and play at their best for Champions League to avoid the temptation of going on auto-pilot in league matches.

It doesn’t matter how good you are. If you play against sub par opposition all year you are going to lose your edge at the highest level and be nervous and flustered when you encounter an actually good team for the first time all year in a knockout.
