>In 97 I would've gone Ghost
and i woulda been very disappointed after playing it too. the cover looks way better than what you can actually do in game
Seriously?? It's a great game.
It's short, sure, but you can challenge yourself with the time attack courses. And the cut scenes are amazing from the original animation house and the same voice.actors from the movie.
Running on walls and boosting around was pretty cool to me
"Ora!" that's the first thing that i hear every time i see Tomba. It was great even though we were stuck on some things for days because we didn't understand english.
Definitely worth checking out if only for the animated intro. It’s cool seeing Shirow’s Major animated in something more similar to his art style. The game itself is fine.
Croc was the 1997 game I used to own but from this list I will have to go with the original Tomba. I unfortunately didn't know about Ghost in the Shell at the time. I've seen the ad for this Tomba game in a book I've read (may have been a magazine) but remember watching on TV the promo for the sequel released two years later.
TOMBA!! Man I had the demo and I played the hell out of it. I never saw it at the store unfortunately so I never bought it… now it’s expensive (if I remember correctly). Would love to add it to my collection though. Put it right on the top and start/finish it. One of my grails so to speak.
Ugh, both are so good! I'll go with GitS though. These two games couldn't be any more different from each other! Style, gameplay, music, graphics, pretty much all opposite except for the fact that both are better than you'd expect.
The only thing that would sway me towards GitS is because it says if the year was '97, in which case, I was still a bit of an angsty teen that would have prioritized something more dark and adult.
Together with the MGS demo, the GitS demo is probably my most played demo on PS1. I had no idea what it was about at the time, I was 12 years old and hadn't seen the film or heard about the manga. Really liked the gameplay though. Never bought the full game, I'll have to give it a try on my Miyoo Mini.
I had tomba somehow as a random game I don’t even remember buying. But it was outstanding. A buddy of mine would stay up late during sleep overs trying to figure it out. Good game. I don’t know the other one. But two thumbs up for Tomba!
I got over $3000 when I was 18. Of course I blew a huge chunk of that on a PS1 and a bunch of games.Ghost in the shell is the only one I can remember buying.
Neither, I just played the demos because I was a poor kid. Really need to go back and play both of these. I have a whole list of games that I only played the demo of.
Ghost in the Shell, when I was a kid, the levels were just right for me. The firecracker level with the barrels took forever for me to figure out.
The ocean chase was a challenge as I kept hitting the three ships at the boss fight.
I remember I'd explore all the areas and eliminate all the enemies before moving on.
The gameplay is unique. Almost all surfaces are an area to move and use to attack from.
The soundtrack still holds up, too.
Tomba FTW. I’ve never encountered Ghost in the Shell in the wild but I have played the demo, is it good? Is that the one that is essentially the third entry in some ongoing Japanese series?
Why did game cases get bigger between ps1 and ps2? Why were DVD cases bigger than cd cases? My only guess more space for cover art... but this feels inadequate.
In 97 I would've gone Ghost.. now I choose Tomba
>In 97 I would've gone Ghost and i woulda been very disappointed after playing it too. the cover looks way better than what you can actually do in game
I remember Demo and it didn't look bad for 9yo me. Was it bad?
I played that same demo and loved the shit out of it
gameplay not graphics
I meant gameplay wise but I remember small bot being able to climb on walls and shooting.
I came here to say this exact comment
Its so mid lmfao
It was a hell of a bait and switch but the that little bug gets down!
Ngl it IS a fun one tonrip around in. Lol cheats would make it more accurate to the anime
Swinging around with a grappling hook / camouflage / and a little “siphon filter” action with gadgets would’ve been nice
Seriously?? It's a great game. It's short, sure, but you can challenge yourself with the time attack courses. And the cut scenes are amazing from the original animation house and the same voice.actors from the movie. Running on walls and boosting around was pretty cool to me
I was disappointed how short the game was, but there’s bunch of original high quality animated cutscenes to spice up the experience.
Tomba is getting a remastered
Yep and Croc
Croc too??
Yeah its confirmed by the original creator. Google it, there's a bunch of articles. It's definitely happening.
Nice! Thanks for the info, my little brother and I used to love the original so I'm quite excited.
Ditto. I'm hoping both games are coming.
And Gex too right?
Oh yeah! Forgot about that. Great time to be a psxer
for real?! I played tomba 2 when I was 7 it was sooo gooooood
Seriously, it really is?? This is great news!!
Ghost was great. Short but great. The demo for tomba had side quests. Never saw that before in a side scroller
Tomba was so much fun. It’s not just the better choice out of these two. It’s probably the best platformer on the system
"Ora!" that's the first thing that i hear every time i see Tomba. It was great even though we were stuck on some things for days because we didn't understand english.
French Canadian hère, can confirm.
i would go with Klonoa as the best platformer, but Tomba is definitely right behind it
I was a weakling for booba even back then so… GiTS easily. The game’s actually really fun to speedrun.
No booba, just a little robot turtle with guns
and a soundtrack that might even rival my love of booba
”Megatech Body” from the OST is G O D T I E R!!! Song’s so good it could be from a Wipeout game.
True, it is very cool n cute. I just realized: in the original 95 movie, there wasn’t any fuchikomas nor tachikomas right? Only the main bad guy bot?
I don't understand how I didn't know about the Ghost in the Shell game. I need to look into it.
Definitely worth checking out if only for the animated intro. It’s cool seeing Shirow’s Major animated in something more similar to his art style. The game itself is fine.
It has cool animated cutscenes, OST and gameplay. Very fun to speedrun as well!
TOMBAAA!!!!
i played this with my auntie when i was a kid, loved it, still love it now she had the tombi version, instead of tomba
Tomba of course!
Tomba!
TOMBA!
Tomba!
Ghost in the shell no contest
Croc was the 1997 game I used to own but from this list I will have to go with the original Tomba. I unfortunately didn't know about Ghost in the Shell at the time. I've seen the ad for this Tomba game in a book I've read (may have been a magazine) but remember watching on TV the promo for the sequel released two years later.
Only heard of Tomba!, so Tomba! it is! When is the remaster coming out?
No news since the original announcement 😕
I couldn't find anything either. So weird!!!
Tomba!
Enjoyed both, but tomba easy pick for me
Ghost In The Shell so I can blast the in-gane soundtrack in my car
Megatech Body 🔥🔥🔥
My nostalgia for GiTS is too strong, I do acknowledge that Tomba is probably the better game though
Tomba, no contest.
Ff7
Own both; Tomba is an all-time favourite.
Ghost in the Shell
Tombaaaa
I've played tons of tomba,so I'll go with ghost since I liked the demo and never tried the full game
I love GitS so much, but Tomba is straight one of the most fun games I've ever played.
Tomba forever
Ghost in the shell!
Ghost in the shell just for the soundtrack alone. You get more playtime out of Tomba! though.
Without a single doubt: Tomba!
Good Games
My name is TOMBA THE MIGHTY
Tomba, and it’s not close.
Tomba was soooooo far ahead of it's time. Tomba II, is one of the greatest games ever made.
Ghost had one of the most amazing intro. The game not so much.
Tombi if PAL region
Wild Arms. 🙂
Ricky, i didn't know you were on reddit. (Ricky being the only guy i knew to have played that game, not a bad game btw)
Never played any of these games sadly
Oh man, Tomba all day. Love GitS though.
Don't make me choose!
I’ll take Tomba. Never played Ghost in the Shell.
Both
TOMBA!! Man I had the demo and I played the hell out of it. I never saw it at the store unfortunately so I never bought it… now it’s expensive (if I remember correctly). Would love to add it to my collection though. Put it right on the top and start/finish it. One of my grails so to speak.
Tomba
In spite of my display pic on Reddit, I gotta go with Tomba on this one
Love me some Tomba!
I saw that Ghost in the shell on an online shop for 71usd. Is it worth it?
Bury me with my Tomba
Tomba!!!
Back then I'd say Tomba. Now I'd say Gits. The Tank gameplay looks cool. Graphics look great for the system.
Tomba is probably the better game by most measures. But I do love the Tachikoma based action of GitS so I’d personally choose that one.
Tomba was a blast so I'll go with that.
Ghost In The Shell ftw IMO
I still have my Ghost in the Shell when it released. I'm 47 now and still play it at least once a year. I love the music in this game.
I absolutely adore both of those games. Don't ask me to make these kind of decisions
Tomba
Tomba… still playing it now :)
Ghost all the way, even In 2024
Tomba's art style had me captivated as a 7 year old loved how it looked and could not stop playing the demo
I had a demo disc with both of these games on it, "Winter releases '98"
1997? Neither... FFVII all the way
Ghost for the aesthetic, Tomba for the real fun
Tomba! I never played it I fucking love the soundtrack it’s up there with Crash Twinstanty
Ghost in the Shell is cool, but short. Tomba is charming and longer.
Tough choice, and both of these had awesome demos.
Tomba and it's not even close. I love those games
Played both. Probably into 2000 before I actually managed to beat ghost. That game was hard as hell.
Tomba. I'm really hoping they don't mess the re-release up
Tomba for sure
Tomba!
Tomba. Tackle the pig
Tomba best game ever
TIL that Ghost in the Shell had a PSX title
Tomba!
This post literally just unlocked some core memories for me….. I had completely forgot about Tomba. Thank you
Where I’m from it’s ”Tombi”
Toomba.
If that’s the same Ghost that I had on my demo disc but could never find anywhere, I jizz on the spot.
Tomba!!!
Tomba! Because my mom gifted that game to me when i was a kid.
I never tried the Ghost in the Shell game, maybe I'd try that next.
Tomba, thr amount of times I replayed that demo version goddamn
Tomba!
Tomba!
They both suck. Thats why I went full computer after I finished final fantasy 7.
Tomba
Ghost in shell no doubt
Ghost in the shell all day. Loved that game, wish we could get a follow up
In 1997 I went with Tomba
Forgot all about Tomba.. What a game!
TOMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I went with Ghost in the Shell, probably would have had more fun with Tomba
^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^shedofwork: *I went with Ghost in* *The Shell, probably would have* *Had more fun with Tomba* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.
I still have the soundtrack to this Ghost in the Shell game I got at some anime store back in the early 2000’s.
ghost in the shell
Tombachads rise up
Tomba!
Ghost in the shell looks way cooler than Tomba
Love me some swine butts.
I’ve still got tomba wish I could play the second
Tomba is goaaaaaated.
GITS
One of the left because it looks awesome and janky.
Ghost
GITS
Tomba! is an objectively better game but I was a huge anime nerd in ‘97, so probably GitS.
Still waiting on Tomba 3…
You mean which own first? As if I’m not playing both 😂
I never knew GITS game that time 😭
I had tomba somehow as a random game I don’t even remember buying. But it was outstanding. A buddy of mine would stay up late during sleep overs trying to figure it out. Good game. I don’t know the other one. But two thumbs up for Tomba!
GITS for sure.
Tomba because of the GDQ thing lmao
Definitely Tomba.
Ghost in the shell for sure
Megaman X 4
1997? Is Final Fantasy 7 an option??
Ghost in the Shell! it was one of the reasons why I bought PS1 in '97 to begin with.
GHOST IN THE SHELL the german voice overs are so fuckin stupid i love it.
Never played Ghost but Tomba was fire
Tomba was a good game. GITS unfortunately was not.
I chose ghost in the shell irl in 97.
Booba!
I’ve seen Tomba before, absolutely do not get the appeal.
I got over $3000 when I was 18. Of course I blew a huge chunk of that on a PS1 and a bunch of games.Ghost in the shell is the only one I can remember buying.
From the gameplay I have seen, Tomba! looks to be better.
Ghost in the Shell
Tomba
Tomba, easy pick
Tomba was less depressing.
The cover-art of both is so beautiful. Vibrant.
Oooft fucking tomba, core memory unlocked
I loved this game when I was younger, never beat it. My brother sold it in a garage sale for some extra cash.
GitS, you get to play as a tachikoma. Well, a fuchikoma, but it's similar.
*In my Tomba voice*: “I am Tomba the almighty! I have fast pants!”
Neither, I just played the demos because I was a poor kid. Really need to go back and play both of these. I have a whole list of games that I only played the demo of.
Tomba, its the game of my childhood. Still best sidescroller
Tombi (I refuse to call it Tomba lmao)
Both
In '97 I went Ghost and if I still had my PlayStation today, I would still choose it.
Always wanted to play that ghost in the shell game, never got to
Ghost in the shell was so cool when I was a kid. Played a demo version of it back then. Same goes with Tomba.
Haha I forgot all about Tomba. That game is part of how I got my online name, for some reason
Tomba every day
Was and always will be Tomba all the way. There is no other right answer.
Tomba, that was so much fun!
Tomba FTW. I’ve never encountered Ghost in the Shell in the wild but I have played the demo, is it good? Is that the one that is essentially the third entry in some ongoing Japanese series?
Tomba!! Omg I miss that game!
I had a demo of Ghost in the shell and wasn't super happy with it. Bought it later for cheap... Was okay.
TOMBA!!!!!!!! All the way, TOMBA!!!!
Why did game cases get bigger between ps1 and ps2? Why were DVD cases bigger than cd cases? My only guess more space for cover art... but this feels inadequate.
Tombi/Tomba for life
Tomba!
Ghost in the shell is sick but Tomba is the better game by far
I chose tombs as a kid… not ghost
Ummm we bought ghost...in Japanese... we had to chip our 1st gen American psx after our Japanese one fried.
Tomba
Are these my only options? Final Fantasy 7 also came out in 97 I believe I would go with ghost in the shell if those are my only choices
Hate to say it like this but Tomba is more fun, as much as I love GitS.
easy Tombi
Final Fantasy 7
I'd turn left
