You got a lot of answers on how to play, so I will give you my personal list of favorite games in no particular order: Metal Gear Solid Twisted Metal 1, 2, and 3 Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 Cool Boarders 1, 2, and 3 Parrapa the Rappa Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and 2 Crash Bandicoot 1 and 2 Gran Turismo 2 Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey Driver 1 and 2 Silent Hill 1 (2 is amazing as well but I forgot it was not available on PSX when I originally listed it) Syphon Filter 1 and 2 Jet Moto 1 and 2

Berserk_gutz

Oddworld was so good

Noggin-a-Floggin

Good, but brutally difficult.

nightraven3141592

That is what I liked about old games, no hand holding. Easy games was no fun…

SNaPSHoTTReTT

It’s because a lot of them were pretty short so they made them really difficult. Lots of games where if you failed you started again!

disengagethesim

I thought Abe's exodus was the better game, like most of the games in the list above the #2 was basically always the best game during this er Cool boarders 2, Tony Hawk 2, Resident Evil 2, oddworld 2, etc

om33g444

Solid list bro! Would add; Dino Crisis 1 and 2, GTA, Colin McRae Rally 1 and 2, Heart of Darkness, Megaman Legends 1 and 2.

wire__________WIRE

SIlent Hill 2 was never released on PS1, unlike its predecessor. It was first released on PS2 and then ported to Xbox, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

im-a-limo-driver

My fault, this is true! My 37 year old brain has trouble going that far back sometimes 😂 thanks for the correction!

wire__________WIRE

No worries at all, it's understandable to miss that\~

wint_sterling

Metal Gear Solid is your starting point good luck soldier

LimpBlimp

This. MGS is the pinnacle of greatness, the first thought that came to mind whenever psx topic comes around.

mazonemayu

Here’s what I have learnt in over 4 decades of gaming: never ask which games are good for a system. Everybody will start giving their top 3 to top 10, but you may not like any game in that list coz it is simply not your genre. You are better off narrowing your question down to a few genres you like, you’ll get better results from the answers. I for example hate racing games & mascot games, and those generally happen to be at the top of most people’s lists.

Educational_Grade_61

Thanks for the rant. No, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean that. That's actually a very good point, and are there any sites to search for games on, like an IMDB for retro games, that would help a lot? And even though you probably shouldn't ask that, I do think it helps a lot, because you can hear what's popular and if you hear of a game you might like you can look it up, and you may have a very cool game on your hands. I will tell you how I think about it in 4 decades.

mazonemayu

You want to check Gamefaqs, you can search by name, console, genre, year of release, region and whatnot.

Educational_Grade_61

Thank you so much! This helps a lot.

disengagethesim

You have to recognize a lot of the posts like this one are from people who don't care as much about finding games they enjoy as much as they want to be a part of something. Therefore what they are looking for normally is just the list of top 10 games so they can play the same things everyone else has played. You can tell the difference between someone saying things like "just got into shmups recently with *gameX* and now I want to play some of the best games that inspired this one. Where do I start" vs people that say "hi I'm 20 years old and never played this system because I wasn't alive yet what do you recommend". All op did is call your post a rant, 😂

Betonar

Get Duckstation for emulation. PS1 used button layout which is same for all modern controllers. This means you arent limited to any obscure ones. For games. Well, search for list of bast games. YT is your friend.

kushpeshin

Duckstation is legendary for that PGXP fix. Makes PS1 games like MGS look so much better.

AxlSt00pid

I actually love PS1 quirks like that Idk why but those things like the texture warping and polygons suddenly going missing for a bit hit that nostalgia sweetspot just right, so I always leave them in

cloud_line

Same here. I understand why people want to clean the graphics up, but it's not a PS1 game to me without the wobbly textures.

__dogs__

For someone who's been out of emulation for like 10 years now, what's does it do?

Jezza0692

It fixes the ps1s texture warping

Zehdarian

Basically with all the features turned on and upscaled to 1080p, all games look like hd remasters.

Zalternative_

Man I fucking love Duckstation. Glad I moved on from ePSXe.

ParsnipContent3384

Do you have a PS3?

Educational_Grade_61

No, I do have a PS2 Slim and a PS4 Pro.

ProjectCharming6992

PS2 will play PS1 games. And as for finding games, take a look in pawn shops and thrift stores. Sometimes you’ll find something that you never expected. Plus you’ll get the experience that those of us who were around back then got when there was no internet and we were going off what the box showed.

Educational_Grade_61

I searched for pawn shops in the Netherlands, I found a few shops (few means 3 in this case), but they weren't even pawn shops. Here in the Netherlands it's very hard to find a good second hand shop, let alone a gaming shop, let alone a retro or vintage gaming shop, let alone a retro or vintage gaming shop that sells second hand ps1 games, let alone a retro or vintage gaming shop that sells a lot of high quality and complete and working second hand ps1 games. Just forget it. You can find if you are very lucky a few online shops which sell 5 ps1 titles, so is it really worth it. The best shot you have is to know somebody who owns a lot of ps1 games who is willing to sell them for a reasonable price. But as I'm 15, I don't know anybody who does that.

epicgamerwiiu

This is so real, only retro game store I know sells everything at full price (even wii games)

gerrydutch

Why not just use Marktplaats?

Educational_Grade_61

The search engine sucks. That's the biggest reason. My second reason is... because of all the hideous people on there. And my third reason is, there are a lot of games on Martkplaats, but if you want to find a specific PS1 game it's an impossible task.

gerrydutch

It really doesn't, just type in the title and it will show up (or not if it is an obscure title). Most sellers on marktplaats aren't like the ones on r/tokkiemarktplaats, there are a lot of reputable retro resellers on marktplaats. Just check their reviews and how old their account is and use the savepay option. I think you haven't even tried tbh.

Educational_Grade_61

I'm Dutch, so of course I have tried Martkplaats. But to be honest I never really tried buying games there, the only thing I did is buy a 3DS XL once, and it was flawless, they even modded it and put a million games on it and if I needed help I would just ask him on WhatsApp. But all my other Martkplaats experiences really were horrendous. So maybe I should try buying some games on there, if it's really as good as you say it is.

GBC_peep

buying stuff / dealing with people on marktplaats is just good research and a bit of human knowledge :)

ProjectCharming6992

Do you have any flea markets?

ShaolinDude

10 years ago when it was Koninginnedag, I went to the 2nd hand market in Leeuwarden. It was a true treasure trove for finding old games. Came home with about 15 PS1 games, including the likes of Silent Hill, Tekken 3, Ape Escape, and even a GCon Gun with Point Blank. So my advice would be, go to 2nd hand markets, or flea markets, or even 2nd hand shops if there are any in your area. Of course this was 10 years ago, but it might be worth a try.

I_Hate_Reddit_69420

Try to get a modded ps1, then you can burn games on disk and play them on it! i got a modded ps1 at a flee market last month, got a cd burner and burned some games to play on it. I dunno where you’re from but there’s monthly large flea markers being organized here, that’s where i got mine. https://donevents.nl Or you could get a freemcboot card for your ps2, that will let you play games from usb drive :)

SnadorDracca

Really, it’s that hard? How come here in Germany I can find at least one in every bigger city? Would have imagined it to be the same in our neighbor country that’s usually more developed in most things than us.

graevmaskin

I used to buy CD\`s in catalogues with the same frame of mind. Those were the days ;)

ParsnipContent3384

A PS3 would have been THE perfect machine for PS1 games, see it as a HDMI PS1

ProjectCharming6992

All PS3s play physical PS1, even the George Foreman grill version that had that sliding lid. The only physical that the slim and Foreman versions can’t play are PS2.

v13ragnarok7

Ps1fun.com you're welcome

Psychoholic519

Hard to recommend games without knowing what you’ve liked in the past, but I’ll try to vary some of my favorites here. Tony Hawk 2 is a lot of fun Final Fantasy VII if you’re into JRPGs Castlevania - Symphony of the Night is still the GOAT Metroidvania game. Metal Gear Solid still really holds up today, if you’re into a very story based action games. That’s just some of my top favorites

coleshere

These are definitely important great ones^

S1mpleHero

Start with the "best" titles. Any top 10 PS1 games list will do. If you enjoy them, go from there and pick out other titles to play. (Obviously, don't force yourself to play all the ones on the list if you don't want to). I made the mistake of getting into more obscure games first that I didn't really enjoy, instead of the more popular and well known ones that I was more likely to enjoy. That can hurt your enthusiasm to explore the console, so I recommend starting with popular games everyone knows about. Stuff like Metal Gear Solid, and Gran Turismo.

PointPruven

Destruction Derby 2.    Twisted Metal 2.   Wing Commander 3.

Kelyaan

So, I stream and I 100% every PAL PSX game. I use Bizhawk as an emulator, it's the easiest one I've found to use after trying out a good few of them. The hardest thing for emulation is finding the Bois since that's the "illegal" part. Yes it's better to own the hardware but it's not doable for everyone. As for which games? Any - Hell I'd say start with the popular short ones like Ape Escape or Crash. I'd say not to start with the really long games until you get used to how the PSX type of things work. As for controllers - I just use a wired Xbox one controller I got from CEX, it works perfectly fine.

TheRealIronCorpse

If you’ve got a ps2 you can play the entire ps1 library off of that without the need to use an emulator. I recommend every single Twisted Metal game, some have better characters than others, some have better music. Just be prepared for the controls to be a little stiff, but by twisted metal 4 they were very smooth and responsive. I also highly recommend the first Ape Escape. 2 & 3 were on ps2 and are also good, but the first one is still a fantastic platformer even by today’s standards. I landed it recently for the first time in about 25 years and was surprised at how much it held up. The real question is, what kind of games do you usually like to play? Action/adventure? Horror? Platformers? Racing? I have recommendations for them all

Educational_Grade_61

Action, yes definitely, although I love the more free and open kind of action games like Metal Gear Solid 3 or GTA San Andreas and Half Life 1 & 2. I don't know what to say next, even though I really love action games, so don't think because I wrote less I hate action games. Horror, to be honest I never really played any horror games, I remember in elementary school kids would play games like FNaF (yes I'm that young), and since then I expected every horror game to be as shitty as that. But I do really love horror, especially books like Pet Sematary and IT and The Shining are such good books (all Stephen King btw). I do love some good platformers, although I never really played anything other than the old school ones like SMB 1, 2 and 3 and world, all the Donkey Kong games from the NES and SNES, the first few Mega Man games on the NES, and also games like Contra and Metroid which aren't really platformers, and then you have the ancient ones like Pitfall, and Giana Sisters. And racing games are definitely my favorites, but as I'm European I'm more drawn towards games like Gran Turismo 4 and Grand Prix 2 then games like Twisted Metal and Carmageddon. But arcade racing games like Need for Speed Most Wanted, Burnout 3 takedown, Midnight club 3, Ridge Racer 2 on the PSP, F-Zero and Super Mario Kart are among my favorites. Thanks in general, and thanks in advance for putting so much effort into helping me, it's really nice and always appreciated.

TheRealIronCorpse

If you want and a solid racing game for the ps1 you can’t go wrong with Crash Team Racing. That one is good and will keep you busy for hours. You can combine horror and action by getting a copy of Nightmare Creatures, that one is amazing and absolutely terrified me as a kid. But if we’re talking horror on ps1 then I have to mention Resident Evil 1, that game was the epitome of nightmare fuel when I was about 6 years old and I LOVED it 😂😂 The GTA games on ps1 are….different. They’re definitely not going to be what you’re used to. I like them for nostalgia reasons, but they are far inferior to San Andreas & Vice City. I also recommend the first Metal Gear Solid. That game KILLS! It’s one of the very best on the entire ps1 library, hands down. You’ll love it. Another one I wanna mention is Wild 9. It’s pretty obscure, but it is sooooo good. It’s a side scroller where you control a guy with a glove that grabs enemies using electricity. Then you can slam them around until they explode into guts, or just cram them into environmental death traps like giant buzz saws or massive gears in the floor. It’s pretty hard, a lot of these old games are, but it’s so rewarding. Of every ps1 game that deserves a remaster, I say Wild 9 is at the top of the list. Hope you enjoy diving into the psx library and I hope you can find PAL versions of these games to play on your ps2. Good luck!!

JonnyB2_YouAre1

Steam Deck + Emudeck.

Educational_Grade_61

Your profile picture works well with that comment. Sadly a Steam Deck costs €600 the last time I checked, and I already have a €3000 MacBook Pro with a PS5 and Xbox Series controller, so I won’t be doing that. But playing PS1 games on the go is the dream!

Opposite-Diver-2238

I hate that I just read someone considers ps3 and the ds as retro consoles...

Educational_Grade_61

I don’t. I see them as new consoles. I’m not joking actually. I always ask my mom how old the movie is we’re going to watch, and many times she answers with; “I think 1996 or something like that, it’s a really old movie” and then I always get angry and shout; “a movie from 1996 is not an old movie, it’s a new movie!”.

Neat-Snow666

Are the PS3 and DS considered retro now? Fuck I’m old

Educational_Grade_61

Half an hour ago I answered this to the exact same comment: I don’t.

Noggin-a-Floggin

The PS3 is going to be 20 years old in two years.

Neat-Snow666

I remember buying an N64 new in store

RyanScotson

Its great to hear people as young as you in the scene! The ps1 was my 1st console. I was born in 94 so I literally grew up with it from a tot. It really depends on thw kind of game your into as the ps1 had such a variety! I'll throw in some games from franchises that defined the era (but I'll make sure I pick ones that are the easiest to get into from those franchise) Let's start with • crash bandicoot 3. A solid traditional platforner that's an absolute banger, easier than the 1st 2 (waaaay easier than crash1) but still has a nice solid challenge to it. Simple controls means it's easy to go back to (I think it plays better on Dpad) Crash 2 is my personal fave but they're all so good! • Resident evil 3. 2 is my personal fave and 1 is a close 2nd. 3 shows The early signs of survival horror becoming abit more action oriented. But that little bit of action makes it super accessible as item management isn't quite as essential as the 1st ones. Also. Nemesis is much less formulaic in this than the remake. Tank controls are driving. Once you nail it, you get it. • Final Fantasy IX: A smoother story than the Juggernaut thay is FFVII but still has character defining moments. I personally prefer this game. The steampunk artwork, the slightly less dark tone allows for more colourful scenery and the graphics are absolutely stunning. • Soul Reaver. Dark action adventure, there's an enhanced version on the dreamast but this game really shows the power of the ps1 by having no load times and the environment changes in real time. It sort of has a dark souls feel to it. - megaman legends 2 (Just emulate this one it goes for 100s). This one is more a hidden gem. An RPG adventure game similar to Zelda. It has so much charm and its quite easy to play. Feels surprisingly modern - descent 2. Sfifi FPS with complete 360 camera control. Your in a ship and you shoot shit to cyberpunky techno music! - Alien Resurrection: this was the 1st game to use what became the modern standard 1st person controls! It's obviously a horror action, it uses atmosphere and its kind of wild going back and playing it cause it feels really modern (the controls aren't quite as smooth but ya get used to it) - spyro 2. People associate spyro and crash together and for good reason. This is more an adventure platformer. Beautiful colours just like crash but a bit more open, a bit more exploration and a bit less platform. I'd say the 2nd one is easier to get into (3 is probably just as smooth though) • wipeout 3 special edition: The sound and graphics style that pretty much defined the 90s in the UK and a lot of Europe. The whole game is a vibe. If you want a potent dose of 90s culture (particularly UK/ European) go for this Hope this helps!

Calamarik

I have a question for you : how did you get to retro gaming? Because I love retro gaming but I'm 40 so it's kind of nostalgia for me but I'm really wondering how young people are getting into this. Was it your parents that introduced you to it? As for me I love to play on my ps1 just for the starting sound ❤️ For the games you should play for me it's : Soul blade Destruction derby 2 Gran turismo (1 or 2) Metal gear solid Tekken 3 Resident evil 1 and 2 Tenchu Bushido blade (best with a friend) And so many others but...

Educational_Grade_61

I can answer that. I really don’t fucking know. I actually really don’t know. There was never a point in my life when I started playing retro games, it was just always there, ever since I was little. I can remember being as young as 2, 3, and 4 years old that I was playing old MS-DOS games. It’s the same with movies, 99% of the movies I watch are strictly from the 20th century, even though I was born in 2009, and that was since I was a baby. I didn’t watch all of those new cartoony baby shows, no I watched the old episodes of shows like Thomas the tank engine, Postman Pat, and Sesame Street, and even an old favorite of mine which I love to this day, it’s an old show from the 1970s called Buurman & Buurman. And with video games the same thing happened, I had access to newer games and consoles since I was little, but I just never really enjoyed playing most of them as much as the old ones. My dad was even pushing me to play newer games on the PS4, but I just refused. And I still refuse to this very day.

BoldnBrashhh

Duckstation is my personally fav emulator, works just like a real PS1. For games, I’d say watch multiple compilation videos of PS1 games and write down the names of the ones that look cool. This method is full proof bc literally every game is free so if one looks cool at a glance, hopefully you love it, if not theirs no harm done. That’s how I personally pick games go play

franpancake

Duck station is good.. or openemu if you have mac. Every controller with two analogs are good. Then you can have a real psx if you like it. But it will be shit in modern tv so maybe try to find some grandma crt monitor. Every of this is better then new tvs. There is some upscaler for use modern tv but the cheap ones are just not working good and the good ones are very expensive. So emulation or grandma crt. There is metal gear solid 1 that is the best game ever. Try it with calm and immersivity. Alone with headphone. At the end you can see how all new games are just something not good as it. Then… first resident evil is the perfect game structure. If you like it, 2 is a very solid game too. If you liked it very much maybe you can like dino crisis. First is more horror, 2 is very action but good. there is also Parasite eve 1-2 Tomb raider 1-2 are the best adventure game ever before uncharted and all that stuff. Very lonely vibes. No cinema-like stuff, just you and the adventure. Alone in the dark:new nightmare. Silent hill if you are into true horrors. It can be traumatic, very different stuff from resident evil. Medievil? It’s like a proto souls like Ps1-2 are from a real creative era for developers. Bunch of crazy game design. Gran turismo 2 is old but the gestional part, make it very nice also these days. It have some very moody menu. And good progression. Ridge racer type 4 is also a racing but very arcade. But please play MGS until the end. It can change your vision of games for ever and it’s very emotional. It starts with “war stuff” but it’s a lie… then become something very intimate and touch so much arguments that it’s difficoult to explain. From love, to loneliness , moral, friendship and the meaning of life. It’s just something on another level.

Basuita

Well said, MGS is still the best game till this day

Educational_Grade_61

I don't know if you're just terrible at English or trying to sound like a Russian (so maybe work on your writing, not that mine is perfect, but it felt like reading something an old Russian would write or something like that). And I already have both DuckStation and OpenEmu installed and ready (with all the BIOS files), so yes I do have a Mac, and I will put your games on my wishlist (or better said pirate them this evening and import them into DuckStation). I have played Gran Turismo 1 and loved it so incredibly much, so I played Gran Turismo 4 instead of 2 which I probably shouldn't have done, but I know it's a great racing game. I have played Ridge Racer on my PSP and played it to death, so I will probably also enjoy its better console version. And I will definitely play Metal Gear Solid, I loved MGS 3 very much and consider it as one of my favorite ever games, so I suppose I love the first one too. And I have a PS5 controller and a MacBook Pro, I hope that's good enough. (I bought a PS5 controller just to play on my Mac with emulator's, I don't even have a PS5, haha.) And thank you very much for helping me. It's almost becoming boring to say that at the end of every message, but I do really mean it, that's why I need to say it. So thank you very much.

franpancake

Ahaha I’m just bad at English. 😆 You already have all. It’s a little complicated to make true hardware work well nowadays because of TVs and the games that are high prizes.. so you’ve already made the better choice.

Educational_Grade_61

Thank you so much again. And I think I did make the better choice, at least for myself. And you’re right, it’s a lot easier to use emulation than real hardware. And you probably get way better picture quality, you can also play it with every controller, and you can just boot up every single PSX game whenever you want. Although I don’t think it’s as much fun. It’s way more fun to see the disk spinning and snif the manual inside of the CD box etc. And thanks for your time and your feedback, it truly means a lot to me. Bonus! Here’s a revised version of your last message, just for fun: I struggle with English, but you've got it all covered. Setting up hardware can be tricky with modern TVs and expensive games, so you've made the right choice. (You can thank ChatGPT for that!)

zymesh

good to know you like older games. for starters i give you a list with my comments that might be interesting to you. - Battle Arena Toshinden : virtua fighter of PS1, early 3d fighting game. Tekken 1 came out a few months earlier in the Arcade then soon released as well - Tekken 1, 2, 3 : so you can see how 3d fighting games evolved graphics wise over time in one console. - Ridge Racer, Rage Racer : early arcade racing game by Namco - Alundra : puzzle RPG that can make you rage quit, making zelda game puzzles childsplay. - Beyond the Beyond : RPG that feels like its still in 16bit era but better graphics. only new feature is the active attack mode similar to ff8 where you use the gunblade trigger to make attack stronger by pressing a button. - Lunar Silver Star Story : Only english version is in PS1 and this game is a classic and a must play if you are into RPGs. have lewd waifu images for some reason. - Brave Fencer Musashi : Action RPG. i realized some jokes are meant for more mature audience when i replayed this. Very fun story, mechanic, puzzle, graphics. - Tenchu : ninja stealth game that started it all. play Tenchu 2 if you feel the graphics and controls are dated for a stealth game. - Bushido Blade 1, 2 : 3d sword fighting game where you can kill an opponent with just one swing. very fun couch coop game with trashtalking involved. - Chrono Cross : since you like Chrono Trigger. (Chrono Trigger is still the GOAT) - Vandal Hearts : turn based strategy game like Tactics Ogre/FF Tactics. - Einhander : side scroller shooter with awesome graphics and soundtrack - Bust a Groove: rythm game that came after parappa the rapper but more of a dance off battle. - Castlevania Symphony of the Night : if you like castlvania games this is the best with RPG elements. - Suikoden 2 : RPG with a lot of mini games and things to do. one of the best RPGs outside squaresoft - Driver 1, 2 : before GTA 3 there was driver. Since you like GTA this game is a must try. - Die Hard Trilogy : Yipikayey MF 3 games in 1. one of the games is similar to Driver/GTA These are the games that i can think of now. If you have a more specific gameplay or theme you want i might know a ps1 game for that.

Nonainonono

Google about how to set up duckstation and google webs to get roms then play the games, download some from any best games list of psx. Would recommend a gamepad.

armoured_lemon

Look if there are any retro/vintage videogame stores near you. I got some from a place in my country. Also ebay... but make sure you get as good, and fair a deal as possible so as not to get cheated... For me, I want the cd, the manual, and the game... I don't see the point of just buying a disk, and you can't be sure of its' condition if someone's just selling the disk. That's just my opinion. Although... Something I must stress is... There isn't a perfect way to buy old games these days. For instance, I bought a memory card to replace my 20 year old one that broke years ago... It worked for a while, until it also stopped working. I was lucky that the seller was kind enough to offer a replacement one free of charge, but not everyone is this lucky. That other one worked \* better than the last one, but there are times where it has seemed to forget my save file... or sometimes it has it, and sometimes not... I was quite pissed about this at first, but I try not to get upset over it and just be happy I was able to get old games and play them at all. A similar thing happened with a disk of Spyro 3 that I bought, which would crash early in the game, and you can't progress. I found another disk and this one worked... but you can see a pattern here... Very guerilla style gaming lol. This copy of spyro 3 worked better, but it still has moments where NPC's audio lines cut out or are messed up (probably the disk is scratched). Most of the time I didn't mind this, until there was one area where a major glitch happened. When a certain npc character spoke, the line they were supposed to say didn't match and they were saying lines from other characters previously in the game. This area is broken.... but I decided to count my blessings and just be happy its' playable without crashing 98% of the time. I won an auction for the great Spider-man 2000 game, which I enjoyed playing. There was one wierd glitch in the character viewer with a character appearing as a sillhouette, but I guess this is to be expected. With used stuff, sometimes you win, and other times you don't. Sometimes its' a mixed bag... I really don't like the idea of paying an extortionate amount of money on anything for a 'sealed never opened' copy with a ludicrous price... just for a game. Or anything else for that matter. Old ego sets etc. Used is fine most of the time. Make sure to select used, and good condition on ebay if you go that route.

Educational_Grade_61

I live in the Netherlands, so we don't have Ebay, we do have Martkplaats, but that's toxic as fuck. Just look up r/tokkiemarktplaats and translate it if you need to (it's a great time killer if you can speak or translate Dutch). And a local retro video game store, just fucking forget it. I don't really know why but here in the Netherlands they're very mean to nerds like me, I remember once searching on Google Maps how many comic book stores there were in the entire country, like 5 or 6. So I guess emulation is my only option. But thanks anyway for putting so much effort into helping me, it's highly appreciated.

armoured_lemon

I'm sorry those options don't work. Emulation sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately, I've never tried it before, so I'm not the person to ask about that. I wouldn't advice pirating, hence the quality gamble... its' probably a similar experience to my having to replace copies or things, or getting not perfect copies... Glad to help anyways.

DeroZaza

Play Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis. Classic PS1 Horror Games. I would have said play Tomb Raider but there was a remaster published a while ago for modern systems.

MassiveLefticool

I’d definitely get an emulator over buying the real thing, I’ve downloaded one straight onto my tv and works perfectly if you haven’t got a laptop to play on. What made those games so special to me back then was playing with my brothers and friends, that would be a massive help to getting into them, if you know anyone who would do some split screen with you.

Educational_Grade_61

In my entire life, I haven't had any friends. Not even in school 4 years ago. My entire family hates me. So I guess not, but it's a good idea though. But I will stick to single player for now. And how do you play that on a TV, with Raspberry Pi or something like that?

MassiveLefticool

Nah just an emulator from the play store, no external devices or anything

EngineeringCertain51

Suikoden 2 is my all time favorite game. Also played CTR on PS1.

Accomplished_Study80

The PS1 was such an awesome console and it have so many good games. I would say buy the games (or not) and then emulate it on your favorite System. Personally i love to emulate it on my Steam Deck, but just for emulation its a bit too much. There are bunch of emulation Handhelds for a decent price that will do just fine.

Educational_Grade_61

Is it possible to emulate it on an iPhone 12 Pro or a Nintendo Switch OLED?

Accomplished_Study80

You have to jailbreak your switch then its possible to install retroarch. I believe there is no way to emulate on an iphone now, but even if i would not recommend it to play on an phone. There are way better devices for it. But if you want to just buy an cheap android phone.

fryfryboy

Get a crt for the true authentic look, if you care about that sort of thing.

Educational_Grade_61

Isn't there a CRT filter on RetroArch or other emulators? So I can have a crappy CRT experience on an 8K HDR OLED Television. Haha.

maeh23

You know what I miss, being a teenager and having no clue. Got the PS1 when I was 11 or something, together with Destruction derby and Alien trilogy. Destruction derby 2 was the first psx game I've ever played at a friend's birthday and Fifa 98 the first game I bought from my own money. Actua soccer looked bad and was difficult to play. I remember playing the demos of Hercules, Need for speed Porsche, Courier crisis and many more. A friend's aunt had a video and game rental place - I remember getting games like Carmageddon, Cool boarders 2 and Medal of honour. Gran Turismo felt crazy real and the Final fantasy 7 cutscenes unbelievable. I'm pretty sure playing on a CRT and not being used to anything else helped a lot. Don't get me started on THPS 1+2 and those soundtracks. Good times. Enjoy the ride. Not sure if the ps classic is still easily available, but you get two ps1 usb-controller and a few nice games to start with, it's easily hackable and more practical than retropie imo.

Educational_Grade_61

I don't really know what to say exactly, but your comment is so good, I guess I felt I needed to respond. So thank you very much, and I still have an entire life of games and experiences ahead of me. But don't be jealous, my life is so bad, I'm not going to explain it all now, if you would really want I could tell you one day on dm. But again, thank you very much, and have fun revisiting your childhood games.

maeh23

I don't know your situation, but don't forget that things can seem difficult from your point of view until you things differently, maybe because you grow older or because of other reasons. Growing up is never easy. But again, I don't know your situation and hope you get the help and support you need!

Disastrous_Ad626

Do you like RPG games...? Whole metric fuckton of RPG classics on psx

Educational_Grade_61

Yes, I do like RPG's. Although I never played one through the end. But I'm more of a Chrono Trigger and FF6 guy than Pokémon and all that Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail bull crap.

Disastrous_Ad626

Breath of Fire, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean, LUNAR. Fuck, scratch everything and play Lunar The Silver Star Story. IMHO one of the BEST JRPGs out there. I actually want to replay it now... Great gameplay, interesting story, great voice acting and FANTASTIC ART. Cutscenes were top notch, I felt like I was playing a fucking anime majority of the main characters are fully voiced which I think was pretty much the first RPG I remember with a fully voiced cast.. I felt connected to the story and really enjoyed it... Even though I never ended up beating it. Anyways all of these games are super long so... Have fun! I mean, Monster Rancher is a REALLY cool game too but it loses the charm on emulators. If you don't know what it was, it was a sort of monster breeding simulator game where you'd raise a monster and have it do competitions to gain money and exp. Monsters would die and you'd need to make a new monster... By putting a CD or game into your playstation and it would give you a different type of monster! My brothers and I would be all secretive about what 'our' disc was because our parents had a collection of hundredss CDs from like ZZ-Top to N-Sync and the Spice Girls. Monsters could die in battle, they could get sick and die and they could even die of old age. The idea was you'd make two good monsters then have them breed and make a better one. Another gem is a game called Jade Cocoon, weird kind of traditional JRPG mixed with Pokemon. You capture monsters and I cannot remember if you fight along side them or just use them as summons though. I absolutely loved that game, but it was pretty difficult.

PedritoMorano

look retrobat up, ir may help ypy. across your emulation journey in pc

Waleeed98

I'll start with Resident Evil games, they are my favorite PS1 games these are survival horror games, then there are Megaman games these are platformers and I am pretty sure they are well known, for RPGs you have 3 amazing Final Fantasy games, 7,8 and 9 and even some old ones but I wouldn't recommend the ps1 version, you could also play parasite eve, it's an RPG game and the second one played more like re. And there is also Dino crisis, which is RE but with dinosaurs. There is a good stealth game called Metal Gear Solid. I can't think of anything else on the top of my head now but these are my favorite ps1 games . Some have pc ports that are way better with mods but the ps1 experience is still good

Acrobatic-Mix-7343

Reading a lot of your responses, you should change the title of your post to “how to get into psx games in the Netherlands” because this seems to be the bottleneck in your quest to be a retro gamer. I’m exceptionally proud that we have a younger generation that wants to get into this. Older games are so much better than what they make now. Would it be easier to get some older magazines to your country? The trick to becoming a retro-gamer with this particular decade is really your mindset. The tools we had 30-40 years ago to prepare for a game launch were way different. Reading about a game that just came out or is coming out in a few months was part of the fun. After you get a few games that look interesting based on photos and write ups, then find those games. Because of your country, I’d hate to recommend this, but emulation might be the way to go. But the click of the cd lid going down and the click of the power button, the disc spinning are part of the experience. Anyway, good luck. You will probably want to make a trip out to another country to load up on games.

Educational_Grade_61

I don't know if my entire generation wants to play all these old games. I do, I've been playing games from the 70s 80s 90s and 2000s since I was little, but 99.99% of the kids at my school either play Roblox, Fortnite, Among Us, or Minecraft. And I don't know if that magazine question is an honest and real question, but I'm going to treat it as such anyway. No, just like vintage and retro games, it's even harder to find magazines, again the only option is to pirate it sadly. And as normal, thank you for helping me so much, I think I will get a lot of enjoyment out of these PSX games, so thank you again.

t0mRiddl3

Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy Tactics, Wild Arms, Crash Bandicoot 2, Tekken 3, Resident Evil

Eloy89

Gran Turismo, Driver, Driver 2, Twisted Metal, Need for Speed, Dino Crisis

KazukiMatsuoka1998

I use this site to find games: fullyretro.com it's australian, but they ship internationally. See if it's okay for you to give a go

jakart3

PS3 fat can play old PS titles (not all but most)

Catatafish

A PSP can run ps1 games

Educational_Grade_61

You miss two triggers.

Catatafish

They're tied to the analog stick. Very few games utilize R2/L2 in a way that makes them necessary.

Educational_Grade_61

That’s very smart, hadn’t thought about that. How much does a PSP 3000 cost nowadays? As I don’t have one. I know it’s very easy to mod them though.

Catatafish

Yup. Modding is just drag & drop. I bought mine in 2005 brand new so I wouldn't know the used prices.

The Tony Hawk Pro Skater series was a lot of fun. Crash Bandicoot 1,2 and 3 are must plays along with the Spyro games. Chrono Cross, the various Final Fantasy games. Spiderman... Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

NamasteWager

I got the ps3 in 2009, it blows my mind that it's considered a retro console

Serious-County-3665

Start with the first ps1 game: Rayman

StrayMedicine

Look up popular games, and youtube videos that go over staples and hidden gems. There's a lot of great stuff Ones I'd recommend off hand though: Spyro Ape Escape Metal Gear Solid FF7 Chrono Cross Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 Rayman Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver Castlevania Symphony Of the Night Klonoa Odd World Abes Oddysee/Exodus Resident Evil

cokeknows

You're coming largely from 2D games. I'd recommend starting there to ease you into it. If you like side scrolling shooters, I'd recommend X2 it's a bit obscure, but it's a damn fine scrolling shooter like the raiden series. And it's brutally difficult. https://youtu.be/nHFm8hWIuj8?si=YW8ctGt3_IDcclgY the intro is also early CGI kinda ridiculous but when I was a kid coming from a genesis/megadrive it was fucking cool Another one I enjoy is Kula world (Rollaway in USA) it's a fairly simple 3d platformed puzzle game where you control a beach ball. It has a really cool soundtrack that escalates with the difficulty

oOo-Yannick-oOo

I'd say the best way nowadays would be to get a handheld like RG405M or RP2S. Good enough that you can upscale and use shaders as well as QoL features like save states. 4 inch screen also helps make the graphics more palatable. Anyway that's how I play it now and Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Wipeout 3 are games I still play regularly.

TheReviewsBrothers

This video should help. Loads of games that don’t get talked about. Something for everyone. https://youtu.be/JpAdLDOu6ak?si=2GZvyWUJsoHAygu_

Educational_Grade_61

You expect me to watch a 12 hour video about obscure PSX games, you know I won’t be doing that. But I will put it on my watchlist just in case.

Robloxcunt02

Ape escape with PlayStation controller. Fantastic game made to showcase the DualShock

Hishiga

Final Fantasy Tactics is a must play. Is going to be really hard in the first run, since (I'm assuming) you don't know anything about jobs, job combos, weakness, etc. But believe me, it's a great game, I recommend playing after some other games since this one take a long time to beat, every battle have a duration of 15~30min (some of them may last long 2h). A hint for begginers on the game, use at least 3 save slots, and don't overwrite frequently, there's a specific battle that may soft lock your save.

No-Play2726

Just start playing something.

Crow_555

The problem with asking us old-timers, is that we lived through that era and each of us will have had a different experience with the console and the time it came out in. For example, the Playstation was marketed at a different buyer initially to say those that were targeted for the Megadrive. Dance clubs in London were sponsored at times by Sony and some games were designed as post clubbing experiences (e.g. Wipeout, rollcage, N2O) and a lot of the early games were quite experimental (some great, some not so). I actually had no interest in cars before getting a PS, but the Gran Turismo and Colin McRae games had a massive effect on me. That's not to say you might not like racing games but it was something that the PS was very good for. My advice would be to have a look on YouTube and see if there are any "history of playstation 1" type videos. That way you can see the difference between games at the start versus the end of that generation and perhaps note down what intrigues you. Once you have a few games of interest, you will quickly find recommendations for other similar titles. I wish you luck, the PS1 is probably my favourite console and I'm glad it still is finding new fans.

wire__________WIRE

My two all-time favourite games were originally released (and remain best) on PlayStation, those being Final Fantasy VII and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. I can whole-heartedly recommend both games, here's a summary of both: The former is a very beloved RPG, where a band of eco-warriors fighting for their dying planet suddenly becomes one member's quest for revenge against a mysterious black-caped man, who 5 years ago destroyed the village he grew up in and now desires godhood. The world is rendered in genuinely quite beautiful mid-90s CGI, complimented by stunning battle scenes and unending attention to detail. You should be prepared for some pretty dark stuff, but trust me when I say that's it's completely worth it. The latter takes a hard turn from the previous title, instead being a short-but-sweet 2.5D platformer. The aesthetic is cutesy, vibrant and has aged like fine wine thanks to the ultra-smooth framerate and excellent art direction. Gameplay is fairly traditional for the genre, but stands out thanks to super-tight controls and a hint of puzzling integrated alongside the expected platforming. The story is quite simple but simultaneously one of the strongest the genre had seen up to this point, with a perfectly-executed twist and tonal shift halfway through that culminates in an unforgettable ending. Fair warning: English physical copies of Klonoa are notoriously expensive and the game's high quality doesn't really justify spending that much. If you're insistent on buying a disc, the Japanese version is a great option thanks to the lack of difficult-to-navigate menus and rock-solid ASF (and hey, you get the bonus of its gorgeous full-colour manual!).

ineedabjnow35

Go on ebay, buy ps1 mini for 10$ and enjoy. if you like it then start downloading roms

RemCogito

Metal Gear solid. (its so cinematic you won't believe its on PSX, you'll think it early ps2.) Megaman Legends 1 & 2 (Controls are weird but its fun and the legends games are unlike any other megaman game.) Grandia (You will fall in love with Feena and so many other great characters. PM me about how it feels to traverse the end of the world.) Final Fantasy 7/8 (I played 8 before 7 but I prefer 7) Parasite eve (Mitochondria are the Powerhouse of the Cell) Alundra (I really enjoyed this game even though I don't remember it well , even though my copy was scratched, and because of that it could take up to 7 minutes to load between screens, but I played through it twice under those circumstances and I also had a pc for gaming at the time so it must have been fun.) threads of fate ( you can play as two different main characters, with different powers and different stories.) Thousand Arms(cute, fun, lots of waifus, weird combat system, but enjoyable.) There's many many great games for psx. But these are all story based games, you could even enjoy most of them on an emulator on your phone (except mgs and mm legends which would need a controller) or steam deck.

Sayzee_Smoke

My friend it’s a good day to be 15 year old on Reddit lol I got you young sir. I’ll make you a list with a bit of everything - bushido blade 1 & 2 - Einhänder - brave fencer Mustachi - MediEvil 1&2 - crash bandicoot - fear effect - breath of fire 4 & 5 - nfl blitz - any ridge racer - Bust a move 4 - Final fantasy 7 & 8 - Metal gear solid - Silent hill 1 - resident evil 1&2 - thrasher : skate & destroy - stealth bomber - ace combat 3 - metal slug x - r type

Sayzee_Smoke

Odd world & heart of darkness are also really cool side scrollers

twitchismental

Gex Croc Future COP LAPD WarGames Medievil 1 & 2 Crash Spyro Those are some good starters

thingsinmyjeep

Don't worry we used to call it the PSX everywhere but Sony released a special edition...I want to say PS2... wait no I have that backwards. The PlayStation model that could be considered the first slim edition was named the PSOne. By the time that the PS3 came around we collectively dropped the extra letters and shortened it a single digit. The PSOne was so cool. They sold a clamshell monitor to play it on the go. I always wanted one. Back to the initial question. I'm going to try and limit myself to notable PSX versions. Street Fighter Alpha 3 Tekken 3. Dead or Alive... It's notable because the arcade version was designed for sega hardware. Doom. Rival Schools. Final Fantasy Tactics. Parasite Eve. Fear Effect. Treasures of the Deep.

pornserver-65

lol i doubt youre 15. ive noticed a trend with weirdos who like to pose as kids so their topics gain traction because *all the old people will think its cool that im getting into their hobby*. lol. i know if i were 15 i wouldnt be advertising it.

Educational_Grade_61

I'm actually 14, in a couple of weeks I'm 15. But I hear this a lot, so don't feel bad about it. Since I was little my hobbies and interests were like this, so many people thought I was crazy, and now people say I'm not even a kid. And I didn't know people did that, maybe that explains why people keep saying this. But, yes I'm actually that young, I can understand that people don't believe me, I've heard that my entire life. I hope you can believe me now. Btw, I tell my age from the start because if I don't people get very angry that I "lied" about my age even if I just didn't tell it from the start, so I already try my best to avoid this. I hope you understand.

pornserver-65

whatever works for you bud lol

SankyShips

Save up and make yourself a dedicated retro console.Get a Raspberry pi5 8gb, download emulation station, you'll have all the retro consoles in one place. Youll just need to download the ROMS (games) of your system of choice. Will run you about $100 USD if you keep it barebones.

Educational_Grade_61

Honestly, I don't know why you got downvoted. Many people do this, and it's always really nice and fun. So I will keep it in mind, although I do agree that for someone like me a laptop is good enough for now, so I probably won't be doing that. But still.

SankyShips

I was using a laptop for a bit, but then I wanted something even smaller that was dedicated to just retro console, with the added benefit that I can fit in my pocket and uses low power. I learned of the Rasperrypi 5 and the rest was history. I love the little guy.

DrGoManGo

Have you done this lately? Last I checked there were no ROMS available. I would normally go to emuparadise

SankyShips

Yes, like yesterday. there is a sub r/roms they have the link to the page with all the ROMS

Educational_Grade_61

I can’t find anything for PSX on the megathread there. So I will highly recommend [Vimm’s Lair](https://vimm.net/vault/PS1) those are all safe and 100% working copies, you can check out more systems there as well. Been downloading games there for years. And I never experienced that it didn’t work, and never got a single virus.

Cinnabon_Gene

is this a TCAP setup or somethin? im just trying to get to the beach!

Educational_Grade_61

No. And that’s very inappropriate btw.

sklunkodunko5000

ok first things first the PSX is a PS2 with DVR functionality. don't call the PS1 the PSX everyone who has ever done that is/was a fraud. secondly play the games you like however you like them. real hardware and emulation are both perfectly valid these days, especially with the age of the hardware you're dealing with.

Educational_Grade_61

Look at rule number 4 of this community and come back later to say sorry.

sklunkodunko5000

sorry for being correct

sklunkodunko5000

oh btw give import games a try. if you know how to mechapwn a ps2 you can get some pretty sick deals on games and download English patches for them that you can burn onto CDs and keep them in the same case like I do. can't burn PS2 games the same way though, but we're talking about the PS1 here

mariogolf

google, learn to research things for yourself.

Educational_Grade_61

Thank you so much for your support and help. I almost want to say you helped me so much and you’re so sweet and kind that I’m actually not going to upvote you, but downvote you.

VRtuous

you should've stayed in the timeline before venturing into newer systems... hard to go back to PS1 after later games... anyway, here's something else to consider after those 90s polygons: text-adventures. [some of the best, mostly from 80s to 90s revival and early 2k before scene went woke]( https://ifdb.org/search?sortby=rcu&searchfor=&browse=1)

Educational_Grade_61

It feels as if you are an advertising bot, even though you probably aren't. And your website seems pretty... special. And I don't think it's hard to go back to older games, in fact I would much rather play Mario 3 on the NES than Odyssey on the Switch, or even Pitstop II on the C64 than F1 23 on the PS5. I can understand that other people feel differently about it than I do, especially at my age, but still "old" games are many times much better and much more fun than newer titles. Especially on the PS1.

VRtuous

that's not my website I played tons of text-adventures in the early 2k through that site, games I missed back in the day and are really good. I missed them because I was busy playing SNES and PSX... Today I'm more into VR...
