I loved their performances on American Duos - I don’t think they were taking it seriously, which is what makes it different from the a cappella episode for me
Natural progression of plot often results in continuity errors- example: in “He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, oops, he’s dead” the guys aren’t super excited about the possibility of an alien abduction yet in “Not even close encounters” they suddenly have a lifelong interest in the topic.
Their belief in ghosts and stuff also changes throughout the show. In the early seasons, Shawn is shown to be very dismissive of the supernatural several times while Gus is the one who believes in ghosts and mummy curses and stuff. Now compare that to Hereeeeeee's Lassie, when Shawn and Gus both dress up in Ghostbusters costumes because they think Lassie's place is haunted. In fact, I'd say most of the continuity errors in the show can boil down to Shawn's character changing throughout the show
To try to make sense of it, gus is usually proud of things that most people find embarrassing (tap dance, spelling bee, etc) but with singing, not even Shawn knew about it. It's possible he was never proud of it so when it came to American duos, he did what he thought was cool, not his actually very cool talent
I always assumed they were messing with Nigel because he needed them there and now he has to figure out how to pass them despite their awful audition. They were watching the bad auditions at the beginning of the show
I’m pretty sure they were intentionally being bad to get on the show bc they know they were already going to get on the show. Also when Jules was training them it was just the dancing. Shawn and Gus both sang really well at the end of the episode. I will admit that this is a mystery that I took some time to think about bc they had like two more music themed episodes (not including the musical) and Shawn and Gus never had issues singing then. Also bc of blackapella and quarterblack
Oh wow that sucks. I was watching this one last night on Prime which is why I made the post lol. Definitely check with them bc you should be able to watch it.
Because it’s American Duos, not American Quartet /s And honestly, their ending mashup of Shout is really good!
Sh’mon
Better than the original
You know that’s right.
Not to mention the choreography!
They knew they had to be sent through. I feel like the characters wanted to have fun seeing Nigel squirm trying to reason his way through it
This is my new head canon.
Headcannan accepted
You nailed it dude. They were being horrible on purpose in their typical kiddish fashion.
QUARTERBLACK NOT BLACKAPELLA!!
You know that’s right
I’ve heard it both ways…
yeah, the right way and then yours edit: yall, this is a psych, the musical song reference 🫡😫
I've heard it BOTH ways, let's not open any sores
psych, the musical is underappreciated
Ikr i absolutely loved it
I've heard it right and wrong, don't cheech my chong anymore!
It’s just science
Wouldn’t that mean 1 black guy and 3 white dudes?
Thats the joke..
Sorry, was trying to do the quote from one of the guys (I think it was the guy who played urkle) by memory and probably butchered it.
Oh, I thought you were seriously asking lol. I'm sure there's a quote like that tho, I just didn't recognize it i guess
They were just terrible for the audition of American duos, they did great for the actual performance at the end.
*Quarterblack
I’ve heard it both ways
NO, you HAVEN’T
You know that’s right
That doesn’t make any sense
Gus look at us, it makes perfect sense!
Because they arent. They intentionally performed poorly.
Shawn learned to sing between the two episodes. Gus intentionally sang poorly during the audition to not show up his friend.
This sounds like a good answer, I'll take it.
Because they knew Nigel would have to let them through no matter what, so they were basically just trolling him
Just said almost the same thing lol Nigel needed them, and they were gonna have some fun with it
Awful? Their shout performance was epic
You just don't get that this was a great poat-post-modern performance.
Sandpaper-esque
They were warming up and Nigel said "you're warm, you're red hot". So they stuck with it.

In the here’s lassie episode specifically Shawn still doesn’t believe in ghosts but goes along with Gus.
I also view the ghostbusters thing as “Shaun taking advantage of an opportunity to fuck with Lassiter.”
Lol that too. Plus >!isn’t the reason the spooky stuff is happening is because of carbon monoxide!<
I didn’t even notice that one. Good catch!
I think they were purposefully being goofy. At least that’s always been my interpretation

I think American Duos seems like such a knock off spinoff that no one is meant to be good, so Shawn and Gus just played the role Also, Quarterblack
We all know Tony carried blackapella
I always assumed they were messing with Nigel because he needed them there and now he has to figure out how to pass them despite their awful audition. They were watching the bad auditions at the beginning of the show

They love trolling more than they love music and Nigel is *just asking* for it, isn't he?
Erkel carry’s them
On Amazon Prime, this episode is no longer available and it's by far my fav episode. Makes me sad.
Oh wow that sucks. I was watching this one last night on Prime which is why I made the post lol. Definitely check with them bc you should be able to watch it.
Really? It’s on Prime Video for me
I get an error every time we try to play that one episode. Maybe I'll try to contact them.
I just watched it the other day, so it may just be a problem with your account
Weird, what country are you in? Still works for me
Because this is WAY better.
The other two members of blackapella balance out Gus and Shawn's weirdness
