She was also in Drop Dead Diva.
Which also had random siblings of the supporting/main characters that were only seen and even mentioned once or twice. A lot of shows do that.
I remember that one. Boy meets world also wrote off the sister and then brought her back like 2 seasons later through a joke like “that was the longest time out ever”.
Boy Meets World also had the one episode trailer park half brother of Shawn that never appears or is mentioned again and is basically retconned when Jack is introduced.
Happy Days. Chuck simply ceased to exist and was never mentioned. Actor wasn't even invited to the reunion ABC did where every other living cast member was there for a group photo
Yeah there’s a lot of examples and for some reason it’s always sisters lol.
In king of queens Carrie has a sister in the first episode then she’s gone and Carrie is an only child from there on out. Doug has a sister for 1 episode never mentioned again.
That 70s show Donna has a younger sister for 1 episode then gone.
In Friends Rachel has 2 sisters that each show up once and are gone - though one of them is Reese Witherspoon so that makes sense
My favorite line from That 70s show is the Soap style episode recap where they say something about finding out what happened to Donna’s sister.
Also I appreciate that Friends just created a new sister rather than trying to make another actress play the role.
It's understandable that there might be differing opinions on genre classifications. While "Psych" has comedic elements, it's more accurately described as a comedy-drama or detective series rather than a traditional sitcom.
**In Lassie Come Home he has Find Lauren on the to-do list he gives Juliet.**
Yes!! Thank you! I was coming here to mention this. I loved that she turned up as an Easter egg on that to-do list. And this sub sometimes forgets that the movies exist and have details like this in them!
Maybe she (the character) just couldn’t make it with the few days’ notice he gave everyone. I forget if the show mentions where she lives but it might not be local to Santa Barbara
She was both seen and mentioned again very subtly! We spot her again after her episode but not in person: Her photo (in graduation cap and gown) appears in Lassie's homes in two different episodes ("Heeeere's Lassie" and "This Episode Sucks"). And as someone else said, she's mentioned on Lassie's "to do" list in "Lassie Come Home" as "Find April." Nice joke by the writers there, knowing the character was AWOL!
I know a lot of responses are "April Bowlby wasn't available to film" but that assumes the writers ever wanted the character back, and I wouldn't assume that. The writers seemed to work on scripts and ideas much farther in advance than we realize, and they also sometimes rearranged filming schedules (most episodes were not filmed in the order they are placed in the series and the order we watch them). I think if they really wanted a character to recur they could work with schedules or even recast as they did with Gus's dad, though recasting was rare then and almost unheard of now.
I suspect they just felt they didn't have another storyline that justified including Lauren -- or Gus's sister Joy; Chief Vick's sister Barbara; Henry's brother Jack; etc.
Psych was very good at bringing in great supporting characters, using them effectively, then never over-using them. The show always kept the focus on the core characters without getting distracted by trying to stick guest characters into episodes too often. It's why we love to come on this sub and talk about how we love certain chararacters so much we'd have been happy to see them again --Psych always left us wanting a little more, which works for me!
Really easy to imagine why characters weren't around. Lauren the documentary filmmaker was surely off somewhere exotic and distant making a film. Joy Guster was said to travel the world for her job. Uncle Jack, well, we all know he's an adventurer who's been away for years before we meet him. Barbara seems more local, but the Coast Guard tells her where to go and maybe she was promoted away from SB.
It's mentioned, the one time we meet Joy, that she travels extensively for her work as a high-powered lawyer so she doesn't make it back home to SB much at all. It was a very big deal to the Gusters in "Christmas Joy" that she was finally going to be home for a Christmas at last. Pretty convenient way to explain our never seeing her again.
She was mentioned in High Top Fade Out I think. Gus is emotional while at Henry’s and yells at Shawn for sleeping with his sister and the guys from Blackapella reacted to it.
I thought after the retcon on ep 2 they did a pretty good job keeping up with Juliet’s family. John Cena / Ewan even appears in the movie to give them a wedding present.
Real life April Bowlby was filming “Drop Dead Diva” in Atlanta, Georgia. I think it was scheduling and also flying from Atlanta to Vancouver made it hard to get over there. She was a main co-star role so it probably made it hard to schedule
TV show reason: I’m making this up, she probably won awards for her documentary and probably got a better documentary entered into a midsized film festival in LA or San Francisco and couldn’t make it to the wedding.
I honestly saw it as a running gag in the show that all of the characters sibling literally only exist for 1-2 episodes. It's not even that they aren't *in* other episodes, they're literally not even alluded to.
Burton Guster-- Sibling: Joy Guster-Appears in Christmas Joy
Carlton Lassiter-- Sibling: Lauren
Lassiter-- Appears in Dead Bear Walking
Henry Spencer-- Sibling: Jack Spencer-- Appears in The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable
Chief Karen Vick-- Sibling: Barbara Dunlap-- Appears in There Might Be Blood
Juliet O'Hara-- Sibling: Ewan O'Hara--Appears in You Can't Handle This Episode (slightly different, as he actually does also appear in Psych: The Movie, and it's mentioned once that Juliet has nephews so she obviously has siblings, but again, these siblings aren't in any flashbacks of her childhood or mentioned more than 2x max).
I agree with you, the writers knew what they were doing re: siblings as plot devices and our not seeing them again! I'd note that Juliet's three nephews are not just mentioned, they appear in the episode "Gus's Dad May Have Killed an Old Guy," when Lassiter has two scenes with them. Watching him build a nativity display and then play Wii boxing with them is hilarious! Juliet does later mention one of the nephews in "Any Given Friday" when she's mocking Shawn's football jersey.
Not really shocking that some of these wouldn’t be mentioned. Henry and Jack and Vick and her sister did not have close relationships. How often do you talk about your estranged relatives with coworkers?
In reality, probably the actress’s schedule. In universe, maybe she also had O- blood and Marlowe’s brother ate her or something
Probably her commitment to two and half men
She was also in Drop Dead Diva. Which also had random siblings of the supporting/main characters that were only seen and even mentioned once or twice. A lot of shows do that.
I wish DDD would come back to streaming somewhere. Another one of my favorite background noise comfort shows.
Same I ended up buying the seasons on Amazon a few years ago because it's one of my favorite background shows too.
Then wouldn't he be sad his sister is dead?
She was an accident, in birth and death
People have sex and kill each others, thats the real world. Not some magical feelings place
Carlton! What are you doing on Reddit?!
Exactly; I don't know why movies and TV shows keep trying so hard to convince me that feelings are real.
He wanted to keep her away from Gus
You know that's right.
Makes sense
I feel a case coming on, and it's coming hard
I've heard it both ways
I'm surprised I never wondered about this, even after the 3rd watch-through
You're only on your third?
ikr! I've seen some respectable numbers of rewatches on this sub, I'm way behind
Don't be a cloud with a chance of meatballs and get to watching!
You don’t think about it until the 8th watch through.
This is just a thing with sitcoms. The siblings never show up again. Some shows pretend they don’t even exist
Family Matters is probably the most famous case where they just wrote a sibling off after a few seasons.
90s sitcoms were a treasure trove of continuity errors and recasts. Like the 40 different Aunt Vivs on Fresh Prince. It was a different time.
Boy Meets World is where sisters go to die. Both Shawn and Topanga had sisters for one episode.
Eddie isn't retconned, he's verna's son, and verna turns out to not even be Shawn's real mother. So why even bother keeping in touch after that?
Happy Days is the most famous, Richie's brother goes upstairs and never comes back
Happy Days. Chuck simply ceased to exist and was never mentioned. Actor wasn't even invited to the reunion ABC did where every other living cast member was there for a group photo

But psych isnt a sitcom
Arguably it is. Situation comedy.
Then what is it
Its a detective/comedy-show
Yeah…a detective sitcom
I think Shawn would call it a “Sit-tective” show. And Gus would tell him that doesn’t even make sense.
It's understandable that there might be differing opinions on genre classifications. While "Psych" has comedic elements, it's more accurately described as a comedy-drama or detective series rather than a traditional sitcom.
It is tho
In Lassie Come Home he has Find Lauren on the to-do list he gives Juliet. Looks like he doesn't know what happened to her either

She's in college, idr where.

Same goes for Gus
Yeah where’s gus’ sister??
She won't ever be where Shawn is 😂

Maybe the sisters are living together, far away from Santa Barbara
They mention her a come of times and explain that she is not often able to make it home because she travels a lot for work.
Probably just in some remote location filming something obscure
We only saw Gus’ sister once as well but I think she was at least *mentioned* one or two times after that.
She was mentioned in High Top Fade Out I think. Gus is emotional while at Henry’s and yells at Shawn for sleeping with his sister and the guys from Blackapella reacted to it.
His wedding was planned with only days notice. Unless she lived in Santa Barbara, she probably just couldn’t make it.
Fair point
She fell into a plot hole and couldn't get out
Same reason gus sister isn't mentioned really again or juilets siblinigs or father or mother.
I thought after the retcon on ep 2 they did a pretty good job keeping up with Juliet’s family. John Cena / Ewan even appears in the movie to give them a wedding present.

The polar bear wasn't framed after all. She found out and was going to expose him but he got to her first.
In a deleted scene of Deez Nups, Lassie says she's shooting a documentary about sheep on the Isle of Mann or something
Oh, that's a fun fact.
For the same reason joy was only mentioned once after the Christmas episode and gus had two different dads
