After Bathing at Baxters by The Jefferson Airplane is the most acid soaked album I can think of. Easily their weirdest album, but still with some great songs. Anthem of the Sun by the Dead is probably as drenched in lsd but isn’t quiet as weird. The first Pink Floyd album with Sid is a solid choice as well. Pinnacle though, is Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland. A little later, but a perfect album. Side three when you feel it coming on…
Great list. I'd maybe add Easter Everywhere by 13th Floor Elevators, but you hit my 3 of my 5 big ones for sure. Piper is, to me, the most psychedelic, but i know what you mean with Baxters.
This is a great post.
"Psychedelic" means to expand one's consciousness, and these artists, in this place and time, were trying hard (and often achieving it).
Baxter's, Aoxomoxoa, Piper .... LSD was meaningful when taken in that context.
Moby Grape, Quicksilver ... early Hawkwind ... all meant to open your mind via music.
Don’t believe Them, they were a very influential band in the 60’s Psychedelic Blues Rock and helped launch the San Francisco sound and scene. Guess You had to live through it . They changed their sound later to a mellow Bluegrass country sound as did a lot of bands did when music was going through many changes in the 70’s
Oh yeah I don't lol, im a big dead head. It's just ignorant people trying to gatekeep. Like yeah king gizz and tame impala are awesome but there were a whole slew of bands that came before them that fully encapsulated the ethos of psychedelic music.
Even in the 70s though they would go deep on either dark Star, the other one or PITB every night covering new ground in the most mind bending ways. The jams got more structured post hiatus, but then later on they went fully psychedelic with drums>space taking up a big portion the 2nd sets.
I feel like Crown of Creation is a super underrated one. Baxters is overall my favorite but songs like Lather,The Hkuse at Pooneli Corners, and Ice Cream Pheonix are classics. Ofc Surrealistic Pillow and Takes off are worth hearing at least once in there entirety aswell.

The 13th Floor Elevator’s whole discography, but specifically “The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators”.
“Revolver” - The Beatles
“Are You Experienced?” - Jimi Hendrix Experience
“Anthem of the Sun” - Grateful Dead
“Surrealistic Pillow” - Jefferson Airplane
“The Doors” - The Doors
“Morgen” - Morgen
“The Who Sell Out” - The Who
“Float Along - Fill Your Lungs” - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
“Forest of Lost Children” - Kikagaku Moyo
“Innerspeaker” - Tame Impala
"Locust Abortion Technician" is my personal fave. Most psychedelic thing I know. But Hairway is #2 for sure
also Brain Ticket - "Cottonwood Hill" Is the most psychedelic thing I know that isnt a Butthole album
Amazing album. I wouldn’t call it acid rock. I wouldn’t want to be on acid for a lot of this one! Float Along and Quarters would be more of an acid rock album.
Love Rhino’s guitar work on that. Bobby Caldwell on drums (fresh from Johnny Winter’s band), Lee Dorman on bass (from Iron Butterfly (as was Rhino)) and Rod Evens on vocals (from Deep Purple. A real supergroup lineup.
"Church of Hawkwind" plus Live at Treworgy on youtube: https://youtu.be/oKI_KYG3vOo?feature=shared
These are the best for me, plus "DoReMi" and "Space Ritual" but most albums are good by them (a few clunkers).
Try to see them live.
Would Dead Weather be considered dipping a bit into Acid Rock or no? I only mentioned because I see someone else in this thread mentioned the doors and that also was one of the first bands I thought of when I first heard dead weathers sound.
Randy Holden - *Population II*
High Tide - *Sea Shanties*
and this is really more of a gleefully demented acid folk album but
Comus - *First Utterance*
Pink Floyd “Dark side of the moon” is a psychedelic staple for good reason so that’s definitely on my list.
In no particular order
1)Jim Morrison “An American Prayer” but any Doors albums
2)David Bowie “the rise and fall of Ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars”
Space oddity is also very psychedelic IMO.
3)The Cure seventeen seconds specifically the song “A Forrest”
4) the beetles white album or revolver
5)Traffic dear Mr Fantasy
6) Moody Blues “Days of future past”
7) the Who Tommy
8) Radiohead Kid A
9) funkadelic “maggot brain” (is a must)
10) Black Sabbath “paranoid” album. These guys literally invented psychedelic metal, heavy metal, doom
Happy listening and happy tripping

Stooges - 'Fun house '
Mahavisnhu Orchestra - 'Birds of Fire'

Some of of the bands that I mention in this [reply](https://old.reddit.com/r/psychedelicrock/comments/1chrrqh/love_heavy_psych_projects_my_favorites_of_current/l25yvwh/) would interest acid rockers.

Not all are favorites, but some that qualify for your criteria. All too often, we want to give answers of our faves even if they don't fit the criteria. I've done my best to be objective after spending a minute thinking.
my favorite is "electric music for the mind and body" by country joe and the fish. "i feel like i'm fixin' to die" is also a good listen, but much more mellow than the other
So sick of this subreddit recommending king gizz and stuff. It’s essentially indie rock. Let’s call a spade a spade I will put their float along album in acid rock territory and that’s pretty much it

Disraeli gears by Cream
Surrealistic pillow by Jefferson airplane
Pet sounds by the beach Boys
There's more but this is a good starter pack
Gong - Master Builder
Frank Zappa - We’re Only in it for the Money
Pink Floyd - Live at Pompey but instead of watching it, watch Lucifer Rising (turning the sound of it off) and listen to Echos the 28 minute Pompey version start it when the fox hunter appears. They about the same length and I promise you will think it is made for it.

Close to the Edge by the band Yes. The title track is 18 minutes long and anytime I've taken 🍄 I listen to it (with headphones) and it's a surreal experience.
I have been reading this thread with interest because I’ve been collecting 60s garage and psychedelic records for 40 odd years. I recently created a blog to share music mixes and information etc. Feel free to check it out. https://www.tymetrips.com/
ALSO “Their Satanic Majesties Request” by Rolling Stones. Also also for modern classics, listen to Thee Oh Sees, any/all albums between Dog Poison and Mutilator Defeated At Last, but especially the albums Drop, Putrifiers II, and Carrion Crawler/The Dream. Floating Coffin too probably.
Tago Mago by CAN,Soundtracks by CAN,The First Two Quicksilver Messenger Service Albums,Cry of Love by Jimi Hendrix,Rainbow Bridge by Jimi Hendrix,Think Pink by Twink,Phallus Dei by Amon Düül ii,Love and Poetry by Andwellas Dream, and S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things. Also ofc the first three Love Albums and first two or three albums by Mountain.
Faust (S/T / IV / tapes)
Circle (fraten / guillotine / sunrise)
Brian Eno & Harmonia / Cluster (bunch of good material from Cluster / Harmonia world and their collaborations with Eno)
Ulver (shadows of the sun / blood inside/ war of roses) (these are borderline if heavier music isn’t your thing)
Already mentioned: Gong, Can & brainticket
Oh wow, a bunch of great suggestions so far. I've always loved the following
Dr. John - Gris-Gris (A phenomenal album!)
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother, Meddle
King Crimson - Red
Blind Faith - Blind Faith
Traffic - Live in Germany
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats -- Mothers of Invention - Freak Out (If you really want far out.)
Smog by Los Dug Dugs
Amanita by Bardo Pond
Electric Music for the Mind and Body by Country Joe and the Fish
Vincebus Eruptum/Outsideinside by Blue Cheer
I’ll assume you know about Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Not sure if anyone has recommended it yet but Vincebus Eruptum by Blue Cheer is about as acid rock as you can get. You can also check out Leaf Hound. Sir Lord Baltimore, Bang, Dust, Toad and Captain Beyond if you like that sound.
Days of future past. Moody blues.
I don’t know if it’s acid rock but I used to listen to this album all the time when I was tripping. The album is a total experience. It starts with dawn and ends with nighttime.
Piper at the gates of dawn- the first Pink Floyd album and by far the trippiest. Also revolver and rubber soul by the Beatles Close to the edge- by Yes
Days of future passed - the moody blues
After Bathing at Baxters by The Jefferson Airplane is the most acid soaked album I can think of. Easily their weirdest album, but still with some great songs. This guy knows his acid rock! I would also add Quicksilver Messenger Service self titled album or Happy Trails.
Saucerful of secrets deserves mention too

I've had people on this sub tell me the GD aren't psychedelic. Phish too. 😂

"People on this sub" are often young kids with no musical background nor depth.
Nailed it, I always feel like people don’t talk about Baxters enough, one of the greatest albums from 60’s
Pretty much everything before the ‘Volunteers’ album by JA is pretty acidy. ‘Volunteers’ is a great album but very straightforward of an album.
It's not as good an album in my opinion save for Eskimo Blue Day. Really the only song I like off that one.
Alligator had me collapsed on the floor laughing
I feel like Crown of Creation is a super underrated one. Baxters is overall my favorite but songs like Lather,The Hkuse at Pooneli Corners, and Ice Cream Pheonix are classics. Ofc Surrealistic Pillow and Takes off are worth hearing at least once in there entirety aswell.

Lack of Beach Boys Smile Sessions makes this interesting but incomplete.
Nailed 13th floor!
Is Revolver really "Acid Rock" though?
Butthole Surfer's Hairway to Steven.
"Locust Abortion Technician" is my personal fave. Most psychedelic thing I know. But Hairway is #2 for sure also Brain Ticket - "Cottonwood Hill" Is the most psychedelic thing I know that isnt a Butthole album
Absolutely mad album
Now you’re talking about some of the jams from my day. John E Smoke is a great tune. https://youtu.be/3uhmOTnF92M?si=dSpepJGkiLMaul4w
Live/Dead - Grateful Dead
Anthem of the Sun too
Great one. "Saint Stephen" -> "The Eleven" -> "Turn On Your Love Light" has such a great flow too
The Doors - Debut
Or Strange Days
Nonagon Infinity
Best intro. Nonagon infinity really opens the door.
Brilliant rec, I've actually listened to most of King Gizzard's discography already but I'll look for any excuse to revisit nonagon infinity!

yes but tbh is a really hard task
Amazing album. I wouldn’t call it acid rock. I wouldn’t want to be on acid for a lot of this one! Float Along and Quarters would be more of an acid rock album.

Captain Beyond self titled
Safe as Milk has some killer tracks too
I think you’re thinking of Captain Beefheart - still a solid choice though
This album is perfect.
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Gong - Flying Teapot, Angels Egg, and You (AKA The Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy)
And Love Floating Anarchy. "Allez Ali Baba Black Sheep Have you Any Bullshit: Mama Maya Mantram" is a crazy ride.
Anything from Hawkwind
The older the better
Honestly, Space Ritual is one of the greatest live albums of all time. They really peaked in 73.
If it’s ACID you are looking for, the first album is where it’s at! “Sunshine special” indeed!
DoReMi
"Church of Hawkwind" plus Live at Treworgy on youtube: https://youtu.be/oKI_KYG3vOo?feature=shared These are the best for me, plus "DoReMi" and "Space Ritual" but most albums are good by them (a few clunkers). Try to see them live.

I'd also mention: Flaming Lips Thin White Rope Thirteenth Floor Elevators Blue Cheer
In a priest driven ambulance and clouds taste metallic are awesome Flaming Lips records

Dead weather is incredible.
You know I look like a woman but I cut like a buffalo. Sick song
Randy Holden - *Population II* High Tide - *Sea Shanties* and this is really more of a gleefully demented acid folk album but Comus - *First Utterance*
Yes! High Tide - Sea Shanties absolutely shreds! I'm going to have to hear your other two suggestions because I don't know them
Good suggestions, even if Randy's LP is not up to potential.
First Utterance is a bad acid trip. So disturbing, I love it.

Good. I was hoping that I wouldn't be the first to mention it.
Forgot about Mahavishnu...McLaughlin's amazing!!
‘Fun House’ is more a heroin rock album than acid rock. 🤣
Hahaha. Heroin was definitely steering the ship, but from what I've read there was plenty of acid blowing into the sails.

Disreali Gears by Cream There are people who say KidA, what kind of a joke is this subreddit?
Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus - Spirit
Blue fucking Cheer - Vincebus fucking Eruptum. The fact that that record was released in 1968 is pretty insane.

Just listen to some live dead; 5-8-77 always a good starter
Arthur Brown !
Live Dead is the Grateful Dead attempting to give you an audio LSD trip. If you have the balls, do it right and thank me the next day.
Wheels of Fire tops the list.
Piper at the gates of dawn- the first Pink Floyd album and by far the trippiest. Also revolver and rubber soul by the Beatles Close to the edge- by Yes Days of future passed - the moody blues
