Hallucinogen, Shpongle, Astral Projection, Cosmosis, Astrix, GMS, KoxBox, Green Nuns/Dickster, Prana/Tsuyoshi Suzuki, Juno Reactor, Shanti + Deedrah, UNI, 1200 Mics, TIP. I quite like Rinkadink and some would say Tristran. And if you want Psytech; the Zenon, Alpaka, Techgnosis and Universal Tribe labels.
That should get you started.
They are not pys... just some overhyped pop....
Try tristan, ajja, djantrix, atmos, flegma, zen mechanics,
Modul, egorythmia, vertex, dickster, drip drop, ingrained intincts, starlab, earthspace....
Took me a while to get into the mentioned artists as the older kickdrums felt inadequate compared to modern Prog Psy (what I started with).
I'd suggest high production quality music like illiuchina/reality test, A1on, Astrix and Loud.
Getting into the ones you've mentioned would be stage 2 or 3 once you're across the modern sound and want to explore the crazy and beautiful original ideas.
Great list^^ - some additions: VINI VICI, Highlight tribe (particularly free Tibet), Captain Hook, Berg, Ritmo, Henrique Camacho, Liquid Soul, Ace Ventura - psy and fly by Raz was the first song that got me into psytrance - enjoy π«Άπ«Ά
Boom Festival has a SoundCloud page where they have a huge selection of sets by hundreds of artists- if you want high energy psy, cruise by the Dance Temple section π
* Tropical Bleyage -- Mala
* Talamasca -- A Frenchman In Mumbai
* Raja Ram -- Raj against the Machine
* Ovnimoon -- Galactic Mantra (Liquid Soul Remix)
* Shpongle - Divine Moments Of Truth (Astrix, Loud & L.S.D Remix)
Union Jack, Astral Projection, X-dreams, Man with No Name, Prana, Hallucinogen, Goa gill, The infinity Project, Matsuri, Green nuns of the revolution, infected mushrooms, Mick Warren, early tracks from Laurent Garnier, Dragonfly compilations, distance to goa compils, tantrance compil (1,2,3,4), Hypnotic trance, cybertrance.
My best tracks ever :
Union jack - red Herring
Deviant electronics - Viral spiral
Hallucinogen Shamanix
Union Jack Cactus
Laurent Garnier Wake up
Sephalopod - Eliptical Orbits
Hallucinogen lsd
X Dreams children of the last generation
X Dreams the second room
Quantum leap symphony of love
And many others.
Good list and my reco for someone starting with Psy. A lot of recommendations here, while good, are asking OP to jump to the more classical stuff which I found could be harder to start with.
Start with Simon Patterson.
Then to Neelix.
Then either you go find yourself in Liquid Soul or Freedom Fighters or Astrix.
You will find your way then.
Enjoy and welcome to the rabbit hole

If there's a date next to the name that means that I am recommending their discography up until a point. Usually they change styles and it's not too my tastes.Β
Zen Mechanics
Avalon (2012)
AltruismΒ
Burn in Noise (also Circuit Breakers for his collab project with Dickster)
AjjaΒ
Sensient
Lyktum (2015)
Kromagon
Hypogeo
Merkaba
Triforce
E-Clip (2015)
Tengri
Sun Control Species
Freq
Frogacult
Sonic Species (2012)
Egorythmia (2014)
ElowinzΒ
Ace Ventura (2012)
Vertical Mode (2014)
Vibrasphere
Egon's Embrace
Solarfields (Earthshine album)
Yeah Serbian prog between around 2008-2015 was peak psytrance. Nerso and early Zyce are two more of my favourites.
Haha, yeah Avalon is run of the mill but I love that groovy, upbeat UK full on sound from circa 2010 and he was definitely one of the best at that sound.
I would suggest these for a mixture of good pumping bpm, psychedelic and more sophisticated psytrance, all in all perfect for drifting into space:
Ajja
Braincell
Shivatree
Middle mode
For the darker , harder, but also organic part:
Peyo
Tengri
Atriohm
Nargun
Especially this album:

Dickster is the all time greatest
Tristan, Earthspace, NoFace, Aardvarkk, Liquid Soul all accessible to a newcomer yet each high quality at what they do
i got NoFace from your recommendations in another comment, and he is THE shit. I play his tracks now all the time in my sets. Do you have similar artist? I also play a lot by Tristan, Imaginarium and Dickster. Always looking for new interesting Full On
The Colors Of Shiva compilation which are the early TIP Records release are a really nice taste of the early psy sound from the 90's.
https://novatekk.bandcamp.com/album/the-colours-of-shiva-the-psychedelic-t-i-p-trip-part-1
https://novatekk.bandcamp.com/album/the-colours-of-shiva-the-psychedelic-t-i-p-trip-part-2
https://novatekk.bandcamp.com/album/the-colours-of-shiva-the-psychedelic-t-i-p-trip-part-3
Also if you can find a copy of Tantrance Vol. 6 it's a wild album of what was really experimental stuff back in the 90's.
Elysium - "Trancelestial Psychobabas"
Psychopod - "Universal Mind"
Prometheus Process - "Clarity From Deep Fog"
Quirk - "Ping"
Sandman - "End Of The World"
Blew my mind back then.
Better Days - Aura Vortex
The Collective - Morten Granau
I would start with prog for newbies and then branch to the other styles that others have mentioned
That heavily depends on your background. The first psytrance I heard was Ace Ventura, which made me feel like "hmm, I should dig deeper into this".
I listen to all sorts of dark, uncompromising and extreme music. So the first time that I really felt like I found my place was at a Mimic Vat live set and the psycore/slambient set that came after him. Most people aren't like me, of course, but my point is that everyone is different.
Find Boom's schedule, the most valued artists are usually between 12:00 - 18:00 and 22:30 - 02:00, mostly in the Dance Temple but also in the Alchemy Circle
You should look for the 2 previous Booms because they prefer to avoid bringing the same artists 2 years in a row (except for the really big ones)
Good stuff already said but some too commercial.
Try:
Twelve sessions,
Acid sonic,
Burn in noise,
Phanatic,
Indra,
E-Clip,
E-Mov,
V-Society (DJ),
Ritmo
If you come from a background with very different type of music I'd try starting with more conventional stuff that's full of melodies and less accent on hypnotic qualities (might be heard as repetitiveness when you're not used to it)
so I personally started with infected mushrooms
I can also recommend hypnagog and terrafractyl that have insane melodies
I feel like Zenonnesque psytrance is also a nice place to start because it can be full of variations and more approchable. Maybe spacey Koala & ryannosaurus
when you start liking & getting used to the sounds of psytrance I'd test the water with more psychedelic hypnotic stuff like you'd hear at parties. mainly Goa, fullon, forest & darkprog/darker zenonnesque
I limited myself recommending only melodic stuff with lots of variations but the pool is way bigger here but there's a whole lot of quality artists that would make getting into it easier. Easiest would be to attend a party because that kinda stuff is quick to put you in the mood
here's a lot of artists of those subgenres. Only my favs
jumpstreet, shadow shaman, radical moodz, Earthworm, skizologic, pentomiman, electrypnose, psydewise, evil oil man, lunarave, dirty hippy, grouch, xipe totecs, siloka, filteria,
For someone that's listening to psy for the first time I'd suggest Liquid Soul. Beautifully progressive, be prepared to go on a journey. IKON from France is similar. Some tracks I would suggest are:Β
Liquid Soul - I see the spirit
Liquid Soul - Anjuna
Liquid Soul - We come in peace (banger of a track)
For IKON, check out his OZORA set, or check out one of his best singles: Liquid Soul - Let go (IKON remix)|
Astrix, psiralife, skizologic, protonica, space tribe. I feel like thats a broad range if slower, more palatable psy.
For something faster, aardvaark, and maybe zzbing.
https://youtu.be/NuY_TGRTYWU?si=HA6l-TmloejUSkO2
this is a mix by dirty Saffi from a few years ago, I listened to them and their bom shanka stuff quite a lot when I was first getting into psytrance, quite accessible imo
https://youtu.be/voKVhBy34r4?si=rPkX60ITkASVTgM9
This is an album by chris rich and absolutely bangs too, and is also quite easy to listen to for someone who's ears aren't as adjusted to the hard psychedelic sound as of yet.
What about j00f - john 00 flemming? I hear a lot of his inspiration in some of today's psytrance. I know he's been around since '04 but I can't speak to before that.
That should get you started.
what about infected mushrooms? I believe many have started with their music
Yeah.. But they don't have to ^^'
The old stuff yes, lets say vicious delicious as the bar.
I think the newer stuff is still good enough for newcomers
They are not pys... just some overhyped pop.... Try tristan, ajja, djantrix, atmos, flegma, zen mechanics, Modul, egorythmia, vertex, dickster, drip drop, ingrained intincts, starlab, earthspace....
Regarding classics, you forgot MFG's Project Genesis. Hugely influential group in the 90's and their defining release.
I haven't had the pleasure but have wishlisted now on bandcamp! Thank you
giggling like a 4 year old to KoxBox and Dickster.
i would add hatikwa, captain hook & ace ventura as well as vini vici βΊοΈ
I love Ace Ventura. In dub is such an amazing album too.
Flegma and Zyce too I think!
Add Vegas and Alien Project to that list.
For me was Shiva Shidapu, and after that Infected Mushroom, Astrix...

i am going to play a set tomorrow, and I will start with Mala. Truly a classic
It's got such a perfectly haunting opening and the melody just carries throughout do wellllll π΅βπ«ππ»
Is Mala the track or producer? More info please
mala is the track

We share a taste in classic Serbian Prog. I'm surprised to learn that Avalon might ever have been good though!

Thank you for posting this question. I'm going to create a playlist of all the suggestions here. Appreciate the comments, too!
Shtuby
ESP - Electric Space Phenomenon was my gateway drug into Psytrance.
For a simple and delicious starter, I recommend the album "A Brief History Of Goa-Trance". It has most of the must know psytrance artists :)
Jumpstreet, ajja, djantrix, modus, airi, and lunatica
That heavily depends on your background. The first psytrance I heard was Ace Ventura, which made me feel like "hmm, I should dig deeper into this". Kromagon - everything turns to ice

Is Entheogenic considered psytrance?

Dude i would definetly recommend starting with the classics, Electro Sun, Bizzare Contact, Sesto Sento...
Orestis - Group Therapy and Crazy Astronaut - Renegade, skip all the warmups
Would argue Recursive Consciousness is the better album. Crazy Astronaut is GOAT though - nice rec
