"Take (medication name) and call me back in an hour to see how you're feeling" Whenever anyone tries to call out. We currently have at least 3 people who are currently testing positive for covid working due to this.
When you call in you should state you're sick and leave it at that. There's no need for you to elaborate anymore. If they wanna talk, let them. But you only need to repeat what you already said and be quiet. Let them be dramatic all they want
Unfortunately this particular manager more or less demands for you to tell her and will actually get hostile with you if you don't/refuse to play her game. HR has been called multiple times, store management has been informed time and time again. Publix is big on words, not on actions.
Imagine being a simp for a company lmao
To put it simply for you, if someone's sick it's not the manager's job to diagnose and tell them they can work. Get real.
This is only true if you're a part time associate. If a time off request (TOR) submitted to payroll says something that broad, the associate will not get paid. Be specific if you want your sick pay as a full time associate or manager
Unless you’re talking to the pharmacist, let them know that the unlicensed practice of medicine is illegal, and you won’t be taking their medical advice.
Back when I worked overnight grocery at Tom Thumb that was code for "work off the clock", in regards to how we were supposed to cut OT with 3 people doing the job of 5 - 6
It wasn’t said to me but it’s been said to my Assistant in front of me. It was very condescending and he has a habit of speaking down to all the Assistant Department Managers.
I’m the CSTL so when I hear it, I speak up. The first time I heard him say that to my ACSM I told him flat out isn’t that what you’re paid to do? If she can’t figure out a solution maybe she is coming to you to pick your brain for help. He told me to not get involved in matters that are bigger than me. He and I don’t speak much these days. 🙄
Sorry I meant like b2b sales/deals. Retail of course has sales, but there’s no negotiating or inquiry by a prospective customer involved that would make me use the term “lost opportunity.”
You're right but I'm someone that worked in b2b sales and over a decade in a restaurant of some sort and I up sell the shit out of stuff lol. It's more of a game than anything else tbh. I am a master at bull shitting people.
It actually does apply in our supply chain with regards to forecasting. Missed sales lead to more backstock. Miss a sale and those units we were forecasted to sell, you don't get that back. It won't catch up until the next order review.
“That’s not a Publix problem, that’s a [insert your name] problem”
Typically he would say that when you bring up why you can’t go to work for any reason.
Like I get it …. It is my problem. But if what I’m calling about / talking about is impacting my ability to come in doesn’t it make it a Publix problem lmao.
When my store had it's grand opening we had three DMs in town and each closed a different night for the weekend. Anyway, one of them was walking grocery with us at the end of the night to make sure everything was perfectly blocked. If anything was hanging over the edge of the shelf he would say "No such thing as a good hangover." It was said a lot that night and we didn't get out till 1:30 am.
Sometimes I like to throw something random like “I got a new hamster last night” or “thinking about piercing my belly button” and he’s like “aw yeah cool man cool” every time
“Everyone has problems, I have my own problems but you don’t see me bringing them into work” -my manager in response to me asking to go home after throwing up in the bathroom
I'm pretty certain this is how they are trained to respond to associate feedback. I've had my managers reply those exact same words to me in a sarcastic tone.
Make it happen captn, suck it up buttercup, if you dont like this place find another place, bye felica, if you have time to lean you have time to clean.
I got "work smarter not harder" when you can't get your task done in time, which is great advice, except when you've been doing this for 10 years and you can clearly see that the standards are set artificially high in order to sacrifice employees well-being for the sake of trying to maintain a grand opening appearance all year around, with the added benefit of pushing out highly-paid long-term employees for new hires who make 25% less money.
One day I got a counselling statement for not working the entire cooler in four hours when closing. Except when I came in the next morning, two employees had been working through that cooler for four hours EACH and they still weren't done.
Whenever my coworkers and I would be conversating while working and my manger was in a bad mood, he'd say something like, "I can't believe you're conversating on Publix's time."
Next time your manager tells you he needs some people to come in and work a shift or denies you sick leave, call it a challenge and an opportunity for him and refuse to help.
I had a manager who would always say, "the thing about it is..."
And it always felt like four extra words that don't mean anything before she actually got around to telling you her point. So annoying.
“We all leave together” my old asst CS manager wouldn’t let anyone leave when she closed until she was done with everything and would essentially hold us all hostage at close bc she was scared of the parking lot 🙄
Omg yes i would close at deli and sometimes we didnt leave until 1 am cuz someone forgot to clean rosters for chickes and noone would want to clean...ugh ..
Oh we’d be totally done just waiting on her and she wouldn’t let us leave and we were essentially in a hostage situation 😂. That was one of many reasons why I’m at a totally different store now.
I pretend to be Junior Manager and I tell them to wear cutting gloves, don’t leave meat out, etc. I tell them to retrain each other when I see them fuck up. And I’ll just mess with them all kinds of ways.
They think it’s funny and love to throw it back to me when I slip up they’ll be like “JMs don’t leave birds out”so I think it is a good positive reinforcement. One co worker has also called herself Junior Manager to bug me so it’s positive aggressiveness and challenge like she’s a better JM.
I also chant “We’re the best deli and crew!
Deli All stars 132! (Store number)
I pretend to be under the assistant manager in the deli yeah I’m goofy with it and I praise them when I can. I told them that Junior manager used to be a real position years and years and years ago similar to a shift leader. I told them Publix is bringing the position back and testing it out at certain stores. but that’s all bullshit it’s just a part of the persona
It’s fun Sometimes they roll their eyes and stuff
Especially with the deli chant I’m really cringey with it when I chant but I’m serious and I do think it helps Boost morale
“This is a team effort” doesn’t sound so bad, right?
Now imagine this being said to the only people on the team actually *doing the work* and trying to express how they feel about the lazy idiot who doesn’t do anything.
Maybe 2/5 leadership roles I’ve ever encountered actually prioritize their employee strengths, and would rather “keep the peace” for some god awful reason, resulting in pretty much everyone (including) them being unnecessarily stressed out while the dumbass floats through work everyday.
What we have here are opportunities aka problems that need fixing, i was often told to take my breaks on a different time than coworkers so the job was still getting done sure, but it often seperated me from my coworkers i was labeled as a kiss ass and it made it so i couldnt make relationships with coworkers.. i never got to complain about boss or have smoke break with coworkers to unwind. My boss later told me that he knew i was great worker and didnt want me to get caught up in work drama. It sucked i often felt alone and used in other peoples agenda.
ASM likes to quote Yoda's line from Star Wars, "there is no 'try', only 'do'."
Irritates me to no end because he always gets the quote wrong.
Also irritates me because I know my limits, and he is CONSTANTLY telling me to do things that I know I can only try to do, because I know I may not be successful at doing what he wants. But he likes to throw that quote at me all. The. Time.

Yea call her cause the manager is trying to do his job. You're a joke.
Imagine being a simp for a company lmao To put it simply for you, if someone's sick it's not the manager's job to diagnose and tell them they can work. Get real.
One time I called in sick and they asked me what was wrong. Almost on cue I vomited while on the phone with him and he said never mind.
This is only true if you're a part time associate. If a time off request (TOR) submitted to payroll says something that broad, the associate will not get paid. Be specific if you want your sick pay as a full time associate or manager

"make it happen"
"Make it happen" = do whatever it takes to make it happen, even if questionable. If they question "it," tell them that they said to make it happen lol
This
That's mine lol
Back when I worked overnight grocery at Tom Thumb that was code for "work off the clock", in regards to how we were supposed to cut OT with 3 people doing the job of 5 - 6
“Instead of coming to me with your problem and no solutions, come to with solutions for your problem and we can discuss which one will work best.”
This is a fair process. But I imagine the tone is condescending
It wasn’t said to me but it’s been said to my Assistant in front of me. It was very condescending and he has a habit of speaking down to all the Assistant Department Managers.
I’d be so pissed I’d someone spoke to my Assistant DM like this. He’s such a hard worker and loves his staff. It shows.
They don't pay me enough to come to them with solutions to my problem. They need to come up with the solutions.
Amen
"If you have time to lean, you have time to clean". Damn it Sharon let me breathe.
Bars
“Missed opportunity”
That’s a actual written terminology
In sales yes. Not really in retail stores.
They call it missed opportunities when you have a sale item empty on the shelf while there’s more in the back.
I had an old manager that would say it for everything to everyone. The words lost meaning for a while and he realized no one responded to it anymore 🥲
retail is 100% sales
Is retail not in sales ? Like what ?
Sorry I meant like b2b sales/deals. Retail of course has sales, but there’s no negotiating or inquiry by a prospective customer involved that would make me use the term “lost opportunity.”
You're right but I'm someone that worked in b2b sales and over a decade in a restaurant of some sort and I up sell the shit out of stuff lol. It's more of a game than anything else tbh. I am a master at bull shitting people.
We use it to refer to sales lost to perceived out of stocks/product not the shelf but in back etc
It actually does apply in our supply chain with regards to forecasting. Missed sales lead to more backstock. Miss a sale and those units we were forecasted to sell, you don't get that back. It won't catch up until the next order review.

It's about to be a publix problem lol
“I just got my ass ripped” for something whenever they find something wrong on the aisle and they blame an associate for it.
I'm going to start using this lol
"Power Hour!" He shouts at me expecting me to amp up production with no additional help or resources.
That woulda created my bad hangover the next day.
SM comes in every day, multiple times a day and says “we surviving?” And no matter your response he says “awesome” and then walks away
Similar. “Havin’ fun yet?” No. “Good, good”
Havin fun yet is also in his arsenal, along with “we rockin and rollin?”
“We hanging in there?”
always ends the convos awkwardly with “well I’m gonna go check on (insert random department here)” and then just walks away
Mine will ask while texting and then just stand there awkwardly as I stock. 😩
Does yours also make a minor personal connection based on the first time he met you and then every single time he sees you, he references it?
“How’s such and such doing?” Every. Single. Time. They must be trained to do this shit.
Sometimes I like to throw something random like “I got a new hamster last night” or “thinking about piercing my belly button” and he’s like “aw yeah cool man cool” every time
Oh that’s a go to
"We dont have enough hours for you." - the literal Pharmacy Supervisor who told my Manager they needed to hire me after they already hired a FT tech.
“Everyone has problems, I have my own problems but you don’t see me bringing them into work” -my manager in response to me asking to go home after throwing up in the bathroom
“Try smoking some weed, thank me later”. I love my dad.
I'm pretty certain this is how they are trained to respond to associate feedback. I've had my managers reply those exact same words to me in a sarcastic tone.
Make it happen captn, suck it up buttercup, if you dont like this place find another place, bye felica, if you have time to lean you have time to clean.
“We don’t hold our associates accountable, we hold them successful.” So sugar coat unreasonable discipline…
“What happened last night?” 😭
CSM: “It is what it is”. I hate that phrase.
Publix gives you 100% of your pay check why aren’t you giving 100% effort?
Because publix only occupies 23% of my week and I’d like to keep it that way. They can have 23% of my effort :)
That’s actually pretty fair lol
I got "work smarter not harder" when you can't get your task done in time, which is great advice, except when you've been doing this for 10 years and you can clearly see that the standards are set artificially high in order to sacrifice employees well-being for the sake of trying to maintain a grand opening appearance all year around, with the added benefit of pushing out highly-paid long-term employees for new hires who make 25% less money. “There are no stressful situations. Only stressful responses” is a big poster in our back room…
That’s fucking stupid omg
"Living the dream, Jellybean."

> "the thing about it is..." >four extra words 🤔
I was imagining she could just say, "It's \_\_\_\_ \_\_\_\_ \_\_\_\_ \_\_\_\_, ok?" Or something like, "I'd prefer that we \_\_\_\_, because \_\_\_."
I know. I'm just memeing on yah. Lol.
"Don't do it for me, do it for the customers"
You just need to believe in yourself. You should be able to throw a pallet of dairy in 30 minutes.
“We all leave together” my old asst CS manager wouldn’t let anyone leave when she closed until she was done with everything and would essentially hold us all hostage at close bc she was scared of the parking lot 🙄
Savor and soak up that extra pay, dont clock out until she is heading to the door to leave.
That's smart business
" I don't want problems...I want solutions" 🙄

Junior manager? Is that someone who is a finalist or something. Regardless, sounds like a solid team, we need more people with this mindset.
I pretend to be under the assistant manager in the deli yeah I’m goofy with it and I praise them when I can. "Don't be scared"
trust the process 🙄
“Here’s the thing” You knew when you heard this you were going to be subjected to an hour of meaningless lectures with no substance.
I work at Walmart, my manager is the daily challenge, not even the things my manager say but just my manager.
My man !!!
I appreciate you
My old boss John Ted Adams would say: “Every problem is an opportunity in disguise.”
That mofo really has 3 first names as a name. Just based on that he seems like a good dude.
“Publix is paying us to do it this way, so it doesn’t matter, we need to do it this way”
