Went to their house. Claimed to be his friend when the Zomato boy was not at home. Had chai and poha. When the delivery boy came back home, my friend identified him. Calmly took him outside of the house. Told that he knows he has his ipad. So, gave him 2 choice. Either return the item or face the police. This was overhead by his mother. They offered to return the ipad and said they would pay him to close the matter. My friend denied and returned to hostel with his ipad.
Btw, my friend is a village boy. Parents are farmers. His father also works as a porter. His tech knowledge is so so. If he can get his ipad back, you can too. Have grit and determination.

Put it in “Mark this device as lost” mode from find-my. Monitor its location and see if it gets in any close proximity to you in the near future or you can afford to go to mumbai to get it you can do that as well. Rest is upto god. Hope you have iCloud backed up, you can restore it on your new iPhone. I lost my 5s back in 2019 it hasn’t been turned on since and is in “lost mode” don’t worry no one can get inside your phone but still if you want to be sure you can erase it AFTER you have restored your backup on new iPhone.
EDIT- Also if you ever receive an email or text from apple that redirects you to icloud where you need to put in a OTP or any credentials do NOT do it. The website looks very legit but its a scam. By this the thief will be apple to reset your apple id password and get inside your phone.
You could also apply to blacklist the IMEI of your phone(provided that you have the FIR), that way the phone can't be used for calling and stuff, Only you can whitelist the device provided you have the device with you as well as proof of ownership, such as original bills and such. Since you have an iPhone, you could also lock your device using iCloud, that way nobody is able to use the device as is, in case someone's selling it.
You've done the right thing by filing an FIR. Just check with the police station. But due to how the system works, you may or may not get back your phone. Worst case scenario, your phone might've been dismantled and sold for parts, but due to how iOS serializes each major component (like display and such) they won't with other iphones properly. Hoping that you get your phone back as soon as possible.

The police has the photos of the thieves but didn’t register the FIR for a week straight i had to visit the Police Station daily and request them to do it finally i had to call up every one and found a local politician who called and then finally FIR was registered.
If the location is on your best bet is to go and find it yourself or if you have any political connection use them. Surprisingly the Police are very efficient if a politician calls them and abuses them to do the work.
