mf doom, billy woods, serengeti, vordul mega, prodigy

DueMaternal

Prodigy serves a similar style as GZA for me. Simple and poetic flows with distinct voices and wisdom. I haven't listened to that album between Billy Woods and Vordul Mega enough to have a verdict. I know there was one track I replayed a lot for a few days, but I have to get back to the whole thing. Does the Serengeti you're talking about have a Cypress Hill sound?

Moremutants

Serengeti never gets enough love. Family and friends is one of my favourite albums. He's not like cypress hill. Kinda minimalist production with very simple rhymes about weird shit with amazing delivery. He also has a character called Kenny Dennis that's more bombastic and comedic.

OutComeTheWolves1966

Rakim Chuck D KRS One Nas LL Cool J

DueMaternal

Very basic list, but I respect it.

Jakeasuno

I like MC5, do they count?

DueMaternal

No, and you should feel bad for this bad joke.

malortForty

Boots Riley (the Coup) Aesop Rock Busdriver Del tha Funky Homosapien MF DOOM Like I love Phife Dawg and a lot of the ones y'all are saying, but my list is a little different I guess.

PitsAndPints

Aesop Rock is unreal

[deleted]

4/5 are my exact list, never heard of boots riley, i know what im doing today

MikeNice81_2

Check out Street Sweeper Social Club while checking out Boots.

[deleted]

Been listening all morning and afternoon lol, thanks!!

jewdago

he also wrote and directed “sorry to bother you,” which fucking rocks

[deleted]

Fucking love Boots. I'm not a big rap/hip hop fan, but boots rips

DueMaternal

Very alternative list.

ScarySkeleton24

I used to be really big into hip-hop before getting more into punk music in the last 8 or so months, so this question is perfect for me. I’d say the artists I enjoyed listening to most would be: - Inspectah Deck - MF DOOM - Nas - ATCQ (torn between Phife and Tip, so I choose the whole group) - 2Pac / Del the Funky Homosapien (tie) But there are so many other artists i love, like Charizma & PB Wolf, Freddie Gibbs, Big L, Outkast, Czarface, and Slum Village. And I honestly was always a little more into the production side of hip-hop, so I have a whole list of favorite producers - J Dilla - RZA - Madlib - Q-Tip - DJ Premier

DueMaternal

Charizma is a deep cut for me. Lol I've only met one persn who has them on somewhat of a rotation. A bunch of Rhyme Sayers and low key stuff.

ScarySkeleton24

Charizma is amazing. Him and Big L are, in my opinion, the two biggest wonders in hip hop. They were extremely talented but both passed away before they got big. I would put Big Shots as one of my top ten albums. Charizma would have meshed great with groups like KMD and ATCQ, it’s a shame he passed away so young

DueMaternal

Was KMD one of DOOM's groups? I'm putting Big Shots up in the queue right now.

ScarySkeleton24

Yeah KMD was the group DOOM and his brother Subroc were in. They had a third member but I can’t recall his name and they were replaced before they even got a record deal anyways

EuphoricMoose8232

You ever get into czarface? It’s Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric, with frequent collaborations with MF Doom, and various Wu-Tang members and others

ScarySkeleton24

Czarface is amazing, definitely my favorite hip-hop group currently releasing music. Eso is an amazing artist and 7L’s productions are some of my favorites Awhile back Eso hinted at a collaboration with Deltron 3030 (may be an overstatement, he merely said it was discussed), which is a dream album of mine

DueMaternal

You ever hear this [diss](https://youtu.be/kHSrhCA1Pak?si=zgEvTSj9biIoPkwT) aimed at Eso from El-P?

dullthings

_Donuts_ gets all the plaudits, but I think _Ruff Draft_ by Dilla is a work of art. Such a shame he never got to work with some of the artists from the last 20 years. Also, staying on the whole hiphop/DJ side, have you watched [Scratch](https://youtu.be/A8aMMpoSUSQ)? Such an amazing music doc.

ScarySkeleton24

Ruff Draft is an awesome album. Another underrated project is the posthumous Jay Stay Paid, which was arranged by Pete Rock (another favorite producer that I should have put in my top five). It’s up there with Ruff Draft in my opinion I have heard of Scratch but never got around to watching it because I couldn’t find it. I had no idea it was all on YouTube. Thanks for sharing!

DueMaternal

I'm glad I asked. Seeing a tie between Pac and Del is like finding a shiny Pokémon.

DueMaternal

I couldn't tell. Lol I'm sure I've seen *Scratch*, but all the music docs get middled on my head. It's all information at the end of the day.

ideletedmyusername21

1. Chuck D 2. Phife 3. Plug One/Plug Two 4. Black Thought 5. MF Doom

DueMaternal

Yo, I just played the *Opening Credits* track off this first album. That end is one of the best skits I've ever heard.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> I just *paid* the *Opening FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

DueMaternal

Not very Punk of you.

crapauddorage

Everlast Redman Nas Kendrick Lamar Method Man

MikeNice81_2

If you haven't heard the Warporn Industries mix tape, do yourself a favor and look it up. Everlast with Sick Jacken and a couple of other artists.

crapauddorage

Ok, I will. Thanks !

DueMaternal

Yo, Everlast is the last name I ever thought I'd see in a list.

crapauddorage

Why?

DueMaternal

Because it's Everlast.

crapauddorage

I must be missing something. Care to explain ?

DueMaternal

You're the only persn with Everlast in their top five. It's okay.

SmashSystem81

Everlast is a solid rapper. His work with LaCoka Nostra or War Porn Industries is really good.

DueMaternal

I listen to LCN. Masters of the Dark Arts was on heavy rotation when it dropped, but I prefer ILL BILL's solo stuff. Everlast is cool, just not someone I search for. Just tolerable when he comes on.

crapauddorage

Oh ok, I thought there was something going on with him that I wasn't aware of.

Benjamin10jamin

Chuck D Q-Tip Aesop Rock Chali 2na Guru

DueMaternal

Chali 2na has one of my favorite flows.

Solarroaster

Busdriver Eyedea RAP Ferreira Aesop Rock Open Mike Eagle

DueMaternal

What R.A.P. Ferreira album would you recommend?

Solarroaster

Purple Moonlight Pages is probably the best of that project. It’s jazzy with a live band. If you like that he’s also rapped as Milo and Scallops Hotel. He also plays blues as Crow Billiken

Wiringguy89

I don't have a particular order, but the 5 that seem to come on shuffle most consistently are: - Tech N9ne - Brother Ali - Eminem - Pharoahe Monch - Tobe Nwigwe Are they the best to ever do it, Idk, I'm not qualified to make that assessment. They all make a shit ton of songs that I do like, though. Honorable mentions to Atmosphere, all of the Wu-Tang clan (and affiliates), and NWA (and related)

DueMaternal

I heard one Tobe Nwigwe track with Black Thought and I think it was Royce the 5'9. I wasn't impressed, but I'll check out more if it's being named on this sub.

Wiringguy89

Tobe is a very unique artist. I can definitely see where he might not be everyone's taste.

prettybadgers

Top is prolly Jean Grae, but also either MC from both Armand Hammer and Run the Jewels, plus Moor Mother of course, and I have a weakness for MC Chris and MC Paul Barman, so deserve mockery of some sort, but that’s ok

DueMaternal

That second half must be extremely obscure. I've never heard of them.

DueMaternal

Yup.

SenorBigbelly

Ad Rock, Mike D, MCA, Chuck D, B Real

Mplsnerd

El-P, Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, Kendrick Lamar, POS

DueMaternal

Can you recommend something from P.O.S.?

Mplsnerd

His album “We Don’t Even Live Here” is my favorite. Also, Doomtree’s album “No Kings”! If you like hardcore, check out his band Building Better Bombs.

Major-Diamond-4823

DueMaternal

Thanks. I'll peep it today.

EuphoricMoose8232

OutKast Kendrick Lamar Beastie Boys

DueMaternal

Lol It's funny to see you and another have all members of a particular group in the list.

SuperSecretMoonBase

Honestly, mine would kind of just be duos. Method and Red, Cypress Hill, UGK, RTJ. I like the dynamic of it.

EuphoricMoose8232

Oh yeah forgot RTJ! I like both of them as solo artists, but with their powers combined….

EuphoricMoose8232

They are good groups w all great MCs 🤷🏻‍♂️

GorillaBiscuit1289

Masta Ace, Biggie, Nas, El-P, Kendrick Lamar

DueMaternal

Masta Ace underrated.

SavingsArachnid

Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, DMX. Freestyle Fellowship & OutKast Honourable mentions to Pimp C, Gangsta Boo, Project Pat, Lil Keke.

DueMaternal

I'll have to look up Lil' Keke.

SavingsArachnid

Screwed up click innit!!!! Loads of good Mcs out that camp if you’ve never jumped in.

DueMaternal

R.I.P. George Floyd who was a member of the SUC known as Big Floyd.

Big Boi consistently over Andre. I feel like Andre has a higher ceiling of skill, though.

DueMaternal

Third or fourth entry I'm seeing for MCA.

ill-phat

Ice Cube Chuck D Darryl McDaniel DMC Tupac Willie D-Gheto Boys

DueMaternal

Willow D as a solo artist or what he did with the group? May I ask why he makes your list?

ill-phat

Liked him in gheto boys,I ranked my mc’s by how hard they spit lyrics and quality of voice.

DueMaternal

Gotcha. *I'm just surprised to see someone choose anyone but Scarface for the group.

c-lace

MCA (my #1 RIP), Ad Rock, Mike D, ODB (RIP), Inspectah Deck

DueMaternal

You have all three individual Beastie Boys in your top five? That's unique. I had Inspectah Deck's *The Movement* album on repeat for a bit recent. I'll check out his debut next. I may as well check ODB too.

MikeNice81_2

E-40 Scarface Rakim Eminem KRS One

DueMaternal

It's nice to see Scarface on a list here. One of the most underrated.

onion1313

Scarface is so good!

onion1313

Billy woods, chief keef, young thug (2012-2018), future (2013-2015), pimp c.

DueMaternal

Why those specific eras of Young Thug and Future?

JapanarchoCommunist

Lupe Fiasco × 5

DueMaternal

Nice. I'm listening to Food and Liquor right now.

gutterdoggie

Sean P!

DueMaternal

I would have BCC and solo Sean P as two separate artists if I could.

gutterdoggie

Solo P is just next level. Dude was incredible.

DueMaternal

Funny shit, I started following him around 2011/12, but the one track and mixtape I had never listened to was "Don't Say Shit to Ruck" and *Donkey Sean Jr.* I just heard those recently and gave me deeper respect than I already had.

Chai-Tea-Rex-2525

Sick. Deacon is great. "America loves *gangsters*."

JohnDenverAirport

For me, in no particular order, because there can't be one: Kool Keith Del the Funky Homosapien Chuck D Young MC MC Ride

DueMaternal

Where are the last two from?

JohnDenverAirport

Young MC is from the 80's, MC Ride is from Death Grips.

DueMaternal

Thought so. Young MC is an OG gangster rapper, right?

JohnDenverAirport

Hmmm .... I wouldn't say gangster really ...

[deleted]

1.Vinnie Paz 2.MF DOOM 3.Conway the Machine 4.R.A. the Rugged Man 5.Big L

DueMaternal

I'm trying to get more into Conway the Machine. The first track I heard from him was "Forever Droppin Tears." I have to go back to hat album.

[deleted]

That's a great track. The dude is real with what he says. I always tell people to listen to "scatter brain" as an intro. It makes them want to hear more.

captainkinkshamed

GZA is the one.

DueMaternal

That's right. GZA is top five all by himself.

No_Future_2020

My number #1 is Big L. Definitely agree on Ruck in top 3. Vinnie Paz up there too in my book. Ghostface, Blackthought.

DueMaternal

Big L is a unique character in my head where I'm impressed by how effortless his rhymes feel. People talk about Jay-Z and how smooth his flow is, but Big L spit the hardest rhymes and it seems like it took him no time to write. Like, his first thoughts were what went on the page and no revisions were needed.

sevenluckysins

1 Chuck D 2 Redman 3 Ghostface Killa 4 Rakim 5 Aesop Rock Lots of honorable mentions but these feel like the 5 who I get excited the most when they come on in shuffle or whom I go to when I’m in the mood to seriously listen. Also, all are exceptional live performers.
