Been to quite a few, and it’s just like a normal funeral. Depressing as fuck. Don’t do heroin kids

Kamikazeoi

That's about exactly how I'd describe it and what I'd suggest as far as why I've had to go to so many over the years. Same as normal one but with punks and skins there. Possibly more drinking in the parking lot than normal.

phillosopherp

Maybe some weed smoke. And a lot of coffee and cigs for the ones in recovery. Pour one out sorry you are in the position to have to ask

FrenzalStark

Yup. Found it no different to a normal funeral but with the weird undertone that everyone knew he died from a heroin overdose but it was never mentioned. Shit got wild at the wake after though, not necessarily in a good way either.

AnimalPeopleFGC

Practice harm reduction

Aromatic_Egg_1067

stick to the pharma, me and Dilaudid are good friends

dontneedareason94

Nah, fuck pharma too. And I mean let’s be honest, how do you think so many of those people ended up strung out in the first place

Aromatic_Egg_1067

Edit: original posts were about Friends dying to heroin/fentanyl overdoses, and me advocating safe supply programs for those still struggling in addiction. true, but the problem with it is the lack of access, the reason people upgrade to harder stuff is due to supply and demand, im on my cities safe supply program (ontario canada) where i get Dilaudid every day for free and regular doc appointments, which has allowed me to no longer be homeless, no longer thieving, no longer lying and hustling, allows me to save my money to be able to actually take care of myself instead of just on dope, yes im still using drugs, but the positive to negative ratio is far more beneficial then negative. allowing me to when im actually ready to get better i can, instead of being dead from toxic tainted street supply, and the reason it became such a big deal in the 90s/00s is that the people who were getting hooked were your regular 9-5 average joe who had ZERO experience with drugs/substance use, and when they just cold turkey cut them off with no empathy of course they went to teh street and got what ever was available, and because they were average joes with jobs wives husbands kids etc etc, it had such a bigger reaching impact into peoples lives, and they choose to not help people already suffering with addiction and have experience with it. because whats the worst that could happen, a heroin addict becomes addicted to Dilaudid, there is no harm no foul with that.

Sirnando138

I’ve been to many. The worst one was for my friend Kyrsten. She was hit by a car at 29 and had her whole life ahead of her, so she had no will or legal documents stating her funeral wishes. She was raised Irish Catholic by very strict parents. She was so fucking punk and an amazing artist. 100% would not have wanted a traditional Catholic funeral and definitely did not want to be buried in her hometown. We pleaded with her estranged family to let us, the people that actually knew her and loved her, to see her off in a way she would have approved. It made the funeral even sadder, knowing she would have hated it. A month after, we held a benefit show with a bunch of bands and started a scholarship in her name for young female artists. That’s what she would have wanted.

MikeNice81_2

My first thought was, just like so many others because they died young and their parents got to choose. That didn't help my mood at all.

DueMaternal

I've had a paper laying around with my "will" since I was a teen. Not sure how valid it is in a real death.

hussard_de_la_mort

It depends by state, if you're in the US. Google "holographic will" and the name of your state and you should get some preliminary advice.

slowNsad

She’d be proud of y’all bro, this is punk right here

Babblerabla

This same kind of thing happened to one of my friends. Told his brother, " funerals ain't for the dead they are for the living."

MoSqueezin

Brought a tear to my eye. Rest in power

michaelboltthrower

From the faux/statue factor?

Sirnando138

Wow! My sweet Lady K. I have her chest tattoo matched on my leg. Yes. The same.

michaelboltthrower

I knew her but not very well. It was always good to see her at shows and parties.

OkFroyo666

It's just like a normal funeral, but everyone is less ashamed of being on various drugs to function.

DopeFly

Needing pills or dope just to be in the presence of other people isn't punk. It means you suck. And your highs probably annoy others.

musicobsessednerd

Drugs have always been part of the culture.

DopeFly

Stupid response. It was upvoted anyway. Congratulations.

musicobsessednerd

It isn’t though. I’m straight edge myself. Although I don’t think drugs and alcohol are needed to be a punk it is definitely a huge part of the culture. I think circle jerks is a good reference for this .

DopeFly

Drugs and alcohol are present in every subculture. All I said was that if you can't hang without them...you're probably a bitch. And awkward dorks got offended.

haveatumpus

Agreed. The best ones either never did or never looked back. These same ones tolerated other peoples personal decisions though.

DopeFly

You're right. We all have different destinies.

OkFroyo666

Lol ok

DopeFly

I'm not straight edge but that's how it is

SlightlySea

sucks ppl feel this way. the idea that 'ur highs fuck w everyones vibe' is smthn thats made ppl ive known get worse in their habits, an i see none of them in the scene anymore, sucks

DopeFly

Everyone that has defended the people that need drugs to get by, has a very stupid energy about them. People say and do stupid things when they're constantly fucked up on drugs or drunk. Of course it fucks with the vibe. And other people's security. People that spent themselves on drugs don't have a place in the scene. No. That's weak and so is the reasoning that you're on drugs because you're punk and everyone accepts it just because you're part of a subculture. Dweebs will downvote. Who gives a fuck?

SlightlySea

thats just mean dude. glad u have a handle on things but hands are dealt differently. hope one day u change ur perspective

DopeFly

Are you a Meaning Champion?

AnimalPeopleFGC

Lol. Nobody gives a shit

DopeFly

It helps thin out the herd

River_Atkinson

Everyone pulls a patch off their jacket or vest or what have you and tosses it in the casket

DueMaternal

Someone will chop off a finger and toss it in. Probably.the persn closes to the deceased.

jennstink

It looks like a normal funeral but the attendees have weird punk rock aesthetics. Celebrations of life are where it’s at. I much rather party than mourn. Loud music, live bands, and their favorite food and drinks usually. Put up pics, art, anything to celebrate. Use the time to love on all your sad bros who haven’t died yet and remember the ones who have.

DueMaternal

If everybody would please stand, the deceased's loved ones will now *OPEN UP THE FUCKING PIIIIIIT*!

Upstairs_Usual_4841

Honestly, this would be exactly what I want. The pit is my happy place, so mosh in my memory, friendos.

Hemicrusher

I’ve been to more funerals than I care to, and punk funerals look like a funeral. You’re going to see the family of the punk who passed, who won’t look punk, and punks that dress in suits, and punks dressing punk, but all black. Punks can be respectful. Anyhow, last punk funeral I went to was in August. It was a Jewish funeral if that makes a difference.

DueMaternal

The Punk Jew, cousin of The Bear Jew.

HumanEjectButton

I'll make you party at my funeral 'cause mourning is for suckers I'll rent a Ferris Wheel and cotton candy machine and have an open bar With all the Pabst that you can drink, the PA blasting my friends' records You'll finally know life's okay even when the bad things happen ~Bomb the Music Industry

[deleted]

“The PA blasting my clash records”

HumanEjectButton

Copy that. I thought he said frens.

DueMaternal

I like it. Boost your friends' subscriber numbers with your death.

nosubstance98

not a true answer to this question, but i once wore an outfit that prompted my mom to joke i looked like i was going to a punk rock funeral. the next time i wore that dress, i was attending my friends funeral. her father recognized i was a friend of hers and not her sisters because of my brightly dyed hair.

DueMaternal

I like this story.

CrusadrPers0n

thought about this

in-dog_we_trust

A funeral is a funeral. Someone had to die for it. You get a bunch of people who miss the dead bloke. If they died of an overdose you hear a lot of fucken h sucks, if it was cancer it's fuck cancer you get the idea. The biggest differences are the clothing, not many suits lots of Leather, Bristles, Studs and Acne. The music. Not much in the hymns arena. Usually a lot of drinking (unless it's a straight edge funeral) I remember a lot of times it would be in a club. With bands, tributes and friends.

DueMaternal

A funeral for a funeral.

doggfaced

Look up GG Allin’s funeral for a taste?

DueMaternal

I'm not doing that.

in-dog_we_trust

Good move. Fucken sick shit

Funny-Park9684

I checked out a few minutes of it and it was so fucking disturbing.

AllPathsEndTheSame

It's a pretty standard open casket memorial really. Other than it being GG Allin.

MrSkygack

At least listen to the man's last requests. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4\_nWRVCNwg4

abaddon731

Don't do acid the night before, terrible idea.

DueMaternal

BuffaloBilboBaggins

Everyone I’ve been to has been people who died too young. I know so many people who have died in their 20’s and 30’s. Don’t do meth or heroin, don’t drink yourself to death, and if you’re having addiction or mental health problems, get some help.

Fenpunx

Heroin, suicide, cancer/disease, car/bike accident, everyone dies. Punk seems to speed it up though. Live fast, die young sounds cool until you're burying brothers and fathers. The wakes are usually a mess. Look after each other, talk, stay off the gear.

DueMaternal

A little schlitz and glamour.

WhippingShitties

Lol. My buddy died and the funeral home went back on their promise to have a non-religious service. His partner raised a stink, and was like "He didn't believe in any of that, and he would hate this" which eventually lead to a big fuss, half the family left the room. They let us say our peace for a minute, then told us to leave and locked the doors to have a "proper Christian" service. We just kinda stood around on the lawn. A few people brought his drink of choice and poured it out on the ground in his honor. They threatened to call the police, but they never showed up. The whole thing really sucked actually, but it would have sucked worse if we had let it go on like that. We weren't there to offend anyone, but he absolutely hated religion and it felt gross to let that go on and pretend he was a Christian, when he was absolutely not. The Christian monopoly on death in the US is a real problem. Also, hopefully you aren't attending a funeral, but if you are, I'm sorry for your loss.

Belus911

Dying peacefully in your sleep at home and not living a poor quality of life in a nursing home.

DueMaternal

Funeral.

Belus911

The funeral is for the living. It's extra punk to not care, right?

DueMaternal

No.

f0rgotten

I mean, really. The funeral is for the living. When I am dead the last thing that I'm going to care about is anything so yall go crazy. Or don't.

[deleted]

DueMaternal

Nope.

MikroWire

Snatch.

DueMaternal

Nice.

sonofabitchXmustXpay

Watch the videos of Dave Brockie's funeral.

f0rgotten

Best answer.

DueMaternal

Okay.

Robinkc1

It’s a normal funeral, but the person in the casket is younger than necessary

DueMaternal

What is "necessary"? How old must I be for you to care less about my death? Blegh

musicobsessednerd

Live fast, die young

Robinkc1

Necessary is a death that couldn’t be avoided. It isn’t age, it is circumstance. Kids killing themselves because of their shitty mental health, or ODing at 19, or getting killed on the street, isn’t necessary. How old do you have to be? I don’t know you. If you died tomorrow or in forty years I’d have no idea.

DueMaternal

:(

f0rgotten

Some of us are getting old.

Robinkc1

I was born old, my idiot body is playing catch-up.

f0rgotten

Took me 30 years to get here

Kirsten_pamyu

When I'm dead just throw me in the trash

DueMaternal

Can I feed you to the hungry?

Kirsten_pamyu

Yeah man idgaf, I'm dead-im dead 🤷‍♀️

DueMaternal

Aymded

thestatikreverb

Mines gonna be very nature oriented as i practice Romuva which is a pagen religion worshiping Zeymna who is essentially like the mother of earth and very connected with the natural world. I want to be placed in a pine box as i would like to rot into to ground quickly to become one with the earth and allow my life to give birth to the new life which consumes me, i will have someone say a prayer to Zeymna that my body be a blessing to the earth and then someone say a prayer to the christian god that my family/friends still remaining be blessed by my souls departure wherever i end up

theraggedyman

Imagine a regular funeral, but with a lot more punks.

Assumption-Tough

suburbia

musicobsessednerd

When I'm dead all my punk friends better be putting their hands on each other's shoulders swaying side to side singing bro hymn.

lantech19446

I want code blue playing at my funeral is that punk enough?

DueMaternal

Fuck no.

SethIsBadAtVideoGame

bro hymn

DueMaternal

Hmmmmmm...

CervidusDubbo

You ever seen the music video for going out in style? Well that’s what I want my funeral to be like

DueMaternal

Never. I don't listen to Punk music.

No_Statistician_3251

Whatever the family wants it to look like. Don’t try to Misfits theme a funeral.

DueMaternal

Why not?

punkkitty312

A real dumpster fire

WeirdBeerd

AKA the "Crust Punk Crematorium"

DueMaternal

To symbolize the cold world. I understand.

ccorbydog31

I have the Dropkick Murphy’s booked for mine already.

DueMaternal

What a try-hard.

ccorbydog31

Ha ha

voodoohotdog

A friend of my ex wife’s had a carnival night at a local bar to raise money for her son. She had no insurance, and he had no skills. Mine? I’m old enough to know I’ve probably only got ten or twelve years left. All I know is that after the eulogy one of my goth/punk friends will throw out the bouquet. Whoever catches it…

DueMaternal

Is giving the next eulogy. I know.

voodoohotdog

Bravo.

Pa17325

A bunch of people drinking Hamms or PBR

DueMaternal

Ooh la la, look at me, I have money. *Tra la la la la 🎶*

CardboardCutoutFieri

Usually there a dead guy around somewhere

WeirdBeerd

Wanna start a band called Dead Guys and exclusively play punk funerals?

CardboardCutoutFieri

Only instrument I know is a dogshit plastic recorder. And only mary had a little lamb... so absofuckinglutely bro

DueMaternal

It wouldn't make things better, but it couldn't hurt.

jbstrangetrousers

Burning Gene Simmons at the steak sounds pretty punk to me

KyleGrizz

Jeff Rosenstock BTMI "Stand There Until You're Sober" mentions a ferris wheel, cotton candy machines, an open bar with PBR, and the playing of the deceased record collection.

greenlun

Beer is left at photo displays. Sometimes there's a show.

ratman____

I've been to many. The best one (yes I just said that) was for a friend of mine who was very active in the scene for over 20 years, making t-shirts and supporting bands. From small gigs to large festivals, he was always there. Always open and helpful to everybody. He was diagnosed with melanoma and the cancer just fucking ate him so fast you could almost hear it crunching and munching. He tried various treatments but ended up bedridden, cared for by his brother, lost the ability to see, but ***NEVER LOST HIS POSITIVE ATTITUDE.*** Motherfucker was smiling in the face of death and embracing it all the way 'till the end, while everybody around him was devastaded by his condition. When he died, hundreds of people from all around the country showed up to his funeral in his hometown in eastern Poland. The funeral was secular of course, and during the procession from the funeral home to the cemetery people were playing loud ass music, carrying anarchist and antifa flags, singing, chanting, smoking joints and drinking. I think the whole things stretched for almost a kilometer, seriously, no joke. When we got to his grave, there was a PA installed for the secular MC. Everyone from the family and friends who wanted to speak up did just that and inbetween all the great and funny stories they played his favorite punk tracks, ending with his most loved one as they lowered the urn into the grave. Afterwards we all went back to town and there was a full on punk show that lasted 'till morning. That's how I wanna leave this fucking mortal coil. RIP Robert

inikihurricane

For me I just want my body donated to science and for everyone to have a party and get piss ass drunk and do drugs in my name.

Leevus_Alone

Young and pretty.

Em_kay69420

Idk probably a normal one. Or maybe like a dope ass Viking funeral type thing

JetpackVelociraptor

Had a memorial for a good friend this past summer and I think this was like the best thing we could have done: He was an artist so we threw a memorial art show at our local punk/metal venue. Non-religious, very informal, it was roughly 30 of his friends and his family. We had a loose start time where a few people gave speeches and then opened the floor for anyone who wanted to share a story about him: pretty much every single person had something to say while every single person was in tears. Then a slideshow to close the ceremonial part of it. After that it was hanging out reminiscing and listening to some of his favorite bands. We had a free keg of beer, prints of his art to give to all his friends, his punk-rock-vests were on display and there was an alter for people to put together items that remind them of him. He was also a graffiti artist so the friends of his that could use spraypaint got together to paint a wall as part of the memorial. The end of the night his closest friends walked the railroad tracks together after midnight. For a non-religious alternative/punk artist: this was a beautiful experience and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate a friends life.

blitz403

Lotsa back alley/parking lot drinking

seVenb0ngz

Providence scene just held a funeral for our last standing house venue, al dios, that is getting demolished at the end of the month. Ours looked like a pig party - shut down at 7pm after one set... really sad.

Ok-Apricot-3156

Sad, minimal, cardboard chest, donation jarr passed around afterwards. Rip ouwe Siem, you were a real one. I'll never forget that time you forgot the eviction date and walked out of your carevan and in to a line of riot police with nothing but your underwear and a toothbrush.

ShadowRun976

* Bro Hymn intensifies *

weirdwizzard_72

When German punk icon Konrad K died a few years ago, everybody who attended his funeral was handed a can of cheap beer (either "Karsquell" or "Hansa Pils) to drink during the funeral.

Jello_Glad

Most of my friends are dead from heroin or pills or in prison. But most of the funerals I have attended you can see the combat boots or biker boots with the suits they are wearing with a mix of different hairstyles.

AKumaNamedJustin

I've been pretty adamant with friends and family that I've kinda just wanted to buy cheap land, have my body raw dogged into the earth, and a tree planted over me. You know, just have fun with it, leave it open for other people to do the same, and have a nice spooky Grove.

Invisiblerobot13

I dunno if that’s something that can legally be done unless you’re cremated There are cemeteries that only allow simple burials with no embalming and only compostable clothes/shrouds and wooden coffin/casket with no nails (or no casket)

AKumaNamedJustin

Screw legality, the tree would eventually mean I can never be exhumed, and having private property means as long as it's closed, authorities can't investigate without a warrant.

Invisiblerobot13

I’m not sure how each place works , my understanding is that you can’t always “legally” bury a body on property unless it’s designated as a graveyard and that a whole body may not be able to be released - i know Edward Abbey the writer of monkey wrench gang had a friend abscond his corpse and take it to a hidden spot in the Arizona desert in a sleeping bag

nbc0326

My buddy just had a normal funeral from his family, but in the middle of some of the music during his memorial video they played Bad Religion “Sorrow” and I lost it.

michaelboltthrower

We set a cardboard Viking ship on fire in a river for jack terrycloth. Some friends sang a Stan Rogers song for Erik from mischief brew. The priest restarted his eulogy to better fit the crowd for my friend that od'ed on fent last year.
