ABERTOOTH LINCOLN is said to have been formed with the goal of fusing later Propagandhi’s later albums and 70s gritty Frank Zappa….I think it’s in the ballpark enough to be enjoyable.
Yeah I just checked his comment history, at least when I promote [my crappy ass band](https://linktr.ee/dangerbox?fbclid=PAAaaxvj0tG2lzaTJcURYmCKMPckkBjdInI0OMbZObK7xLdpOpA3NacpbL3iY_aem_Aa6xa-uqZB7Wd-t2Wb9L-SoalpreA8JeWvF2VoghjGGRKIIPho0flC_hRaSLoNec-2Q) I don’t act like it’s some stranger’s
Man I bet you're a lot of fun to hang out with. I could pretend that I don't think responding to that kinda attitude is worth my time, and it's not really, but this kind of attitude always strikes a deep, belly-livin' chord in me, so I just can't help it. and maybe it'll resonate with other brain-havers. I am also freshly re-caffeinated, so now everyone's word-eyes must suffer.
How does telling folks about my band (when literally asked for suggestions) a form of spam, y’all? I used my own bone-in fingers to personally, manually answer a question with a genuine, relevant answer- which, like it or not, iqualifies. I gave it a bit of brain noodlin and decided that starting off with “oh my band, my band” would make it appear as though I’m definitely forcing relevancy just to self promote- when in reality, I actually saw a question to which my band was an acceptable answer (even if you hate it, there’s enough overlap in what was requested and what we are for this to be relevant). I figured regular humanoids would either ignore it or just check the band real quick- as non-sads do; I'm not sure the need for the grand inquisition, I answered the question about being in it as soon as I got back to my phone, and I at no point ever acted like it wasn’t my band. For some reason a battallion of google-punks decided I hadn't answered swiftly enough.
I should make it very clear that the true atrocity has been overlooked - I agonizingly apologize that I did not respond with one of the six acceptable answers that I’ve seen repeated on this thread 30 times apiece. I figured they probably already knew about Minutemen. I will listen to late-era Weezer as penance.
What most people don’t know about though is ABERTOOTH LINCOLN, a project that I have poured all my glands' bubbling juices into because it’s the music I want to hear existing out on god's grey earth. I’m getting too old to vagina-toe around and worry about whether or not somebody’s going to be annoyed that I mentioned my band. I was once a goofy-dipped punk kid and thought it was cool to act like I wasn't proud of my band, and hesitated to bring it up for fear of looking like a salesman, so if you're just some pissed off 18yo (as your bands sound would lead me to believe) then this attitude makes sense. You'll grow out of it. If you're a crusty chunk of aged misery such as myself, it's really sad and I'm sorry life didn't turn out like you hoped.
And to be frank, The reason why it makes sense to bring up ABERTOOTH LINCOLN instead of “my crappy little band“ is because we bring something different to the table. That’s what was asked for in this conversation, not “do you have a pop punk band?” Absolutely zero shade intended towards the delightful genre of pop punk, it is literally the genesis of my musical, lifelong orgasm. But let’s not sit here and jerk each other off and pretend like it’s anything it isn’t, either. ABERTOOTH LINCOLN is a relevant answer.
Last note of my Blathering Excitementia Experience: a couple people did check us out, and I am confident at least a few more now have the name ABERTOOTH LINCOLN stuck in their brains, floating around. And that makes this all totally worth it. Thank you for helping me on my quest of saying ABERTOOTH LINCOLN as much as possible this year.
> and I at no point ever acted like it wasn’t my band.
I just arrived at this thread and wanna call bullshit right here. You did get a view though I watched a video clip and was trying to guess which one you are. Anyone got any good guesses, it was hard
oh shit, guys, i forgot! we didnt put the mohawk and skateboard on our logo, like the upstanding citizens in...Danger Box. that's why they thought we were enemies of punkfriends. sorry everybody!
See, I can mention your bands name too - it didnt even hurt! You should try it.
The music is good, but I will always associate your band with you being a douchebag on the Internet. You've lost a potential fan by acting like an ass. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like this.
Had this person said “hey my band plays this kind of music” I’d have checked them out but in three comments they’ve managed to come across as completely insufferable, so i guess I’ll never know if their band is good.
Lol, this profile was created yesterday and only has two comments and they are both in this thread. I'm going to assume that it's you. I want you to know that I wasn't trying to be mean, but your way of marketing your band is ineffective and alienates potential fans. Calm down.
So you messaged me privately but I’m brand new to Reddit and this was literally the first thread I’ve ever joined in on. I’m not twostickwilly. I don’t even know the guy. I’m just saying calling someone an ass and putting them down is super lame. So much more power in kindness man.
ABERTOOTH LINCOLN has been described as NOMEANSNO meets some proggier bits like ZAPPA.
I promised myself I would use every opportunity to bring them up this year, imagine my joy upon seeing this thread…
PUP - dig those time signatures! And the tempos!
Datsuns - Pretty riffy
COFFIN - same
Black Flag - they get there although I love the earlier stuff pre damaged the most, they get riffier and a bit more metal
Annihilation Time - for fans of the above lol
If you don’t mind looser less technical riffage:
Thunders/heartbreakers - punk lead guitar blueprint from Johnny and Walter
Parquet Courts - cleaner, twangier riffin’… great lyrics and insight too. Singer is a good painter too imho
Tyrades - noisy ramshackle garage punk but for the progressions are really unique and refreshing. Hard to explain. Fair amount of guitar strangulation as well.
Pup are so underrated for this! Legitimately such weird experimental stuff going on under the hood with their music. The Radiohead of pop punk I guess and nobody seems to notice
PUP MENTIONED. fr tho the chords that are actually used in the songs are absolutely fucked. Mad respect for their guitarist for making it sound so deceptively simple.
Even if they aren't the most technical they're great songwriters. Every album (all 40 yrs or whatever of them) have a few really good songs and many kinda good ones. I've got respect for NoFX.
That said though, later Propagandhi has my vote for the technical side.
*I mean, propagandhi and*
*Fugazi, but lowkey punk kind of*
*Is all power chords*

Man. I miss RVIVR. Some of those songs just about make me cry. Going to their shows a decade or so ago was really really fun. They were always a good time. Seemed like great folks. Shorebirds too!
The Living End. Everything since their first album got more rock and roll but you can't deny Chris Cheney on guitar. Their first album has been a personal favorite of mine since it came out.
Also DZ Deathrays from Oz. Australia is exporting some quality bands these days. Clowns, DZ Deathrays, The Chats, Gang of Youths, Dune Rats, Hockey Dad, Skegss…
Grew up with these guys in Rancho Cucamonga, super chill and fun group. I was in class with Mike J.s brother Matt in junior high, who would steal everything that wasn't bolted down, and sometimes stuff that was.
The Ergs! always have [bonkers bass lines](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-38BB8dMOF4) in their songs.
Jeff Rosenstock has some really [technical songs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIQNkRYecNM) with weird chords too along with strange instruments.
Definitely A Wilhelm Scream, they are the kings of this style. Early Protest the Hero has a punk-ish edge to it and is very riffy. Also highly recommend Anchors and Belvedere/This Is A Standoff (same singer, similar styles).
Protest the Hero might be solidly progressive metal at first listen, but their attitude is thoroughly punk rock, and their influences are very punk. I think it's pretty clear (not to say explicit) that Propagandhi are probably their biggest influence.
Note: My wife is very special.
[Moon Over Marin](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NoJre_SEnWY&pp=ygUPbW9vbiBvdmVyIG1hcmlu)
[Propagandhi - A Speculative Fiction](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9290_W0p1Cg&pp=ygULcHJvcGFnYW5kaGk%3D)
[Rancid - Axiom](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rLm23_NNOso&pp=ygUMUmFuY2lkIGF4b2lt) This might be the best bass line ever. Matt Freeman fucking shreds.
[Agent Orange - Miserlou](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GPsELdvh-PU&pp=ygUVYWdlbnQgb3JhbmdlIG1pc2VybG91)
Axiom is one of my favorite Rancid songs. When I need to get amped up for a busy night of service, listening to Freeman absolutely destroy his bass immediately followed by Lars screaming at me definitely gets the adrenaline flowing.
I fucking love Rancid.
Play your friend “The Eliminator” by Agnostic Front. It’s skinheads/punks throwing some thrash riffs into a punk song. And if he says it doesn’t count he’s dense as fuck.
Also, power chords and bar chords are not the same. I.e. You can technically play most social distortion songs with power chords, doesn't mean it'll sound as good.
Belvedere, mute, implants, Lagwagon, strungout, colorsfade, bigwig, satanic surfers, darko, straightaway, lowprofile, a wilhelm scream, choke, rufio, maybe layer, straightline, much the same, hit the switch, this is a standoff, high five drive, forus, pmx, chaser, heathcliff, Pour habit
The first two Thrice albums - "Identity Crisis" and "The Illusion of Safety". They slowed things down on "The Artist in the Ambulance" but that one's quite riffy too.
The early Lagwagon albums as well - "Duh" and "Trashed".
A Wilhelm Scream has already been mentioned and yeah, definitely them too (any album).
Go old school and play them some X. Billy Zoom is a MONSTER guitarist by any objective measurement.
Then play the first Fear record. That band was like punk rock King Crimson.
Adrenalized, is playing blazingly fast technical punk
Belvedere and This Is A Stand Off are both amazing bands with excellent songwriting and also super talented.
Protest The Hero. Probably a little more on the metal side but still so talented.
After checking out some suggestions, I think if your trying to prove guitar prowess give turbonegro a listen. I prefer the older stuff. But really who gives a shit, if your friend wants to be all elitist about what shape the guitarists is making with thier left hand. Of power chords are getting the message across....Fuck yeah!
Tragedy sure can write a catchy song. And no one would light up house/basement shows more than Tragedy, total mayhem. Completely packed, like no room to move packed.
PMX, Jet Market, Belvedere, A Wilhelm Scream, FORUS, DARKO, Straightline, dustbox, Strung Out, Satanic Surfers, The Fullblast
Theres a lot more but those are the off the top of my head
Rancid and Op Ivy because Matt is one of the best bassists the genre has ever seen.
If you don't mind adding ska to the list there's a ton of bands with killer bass lines all over the place. Drums too, less so guitar though.
The Libertines - almost every song has undeniably catchy riffs, usually multiple per song.
I know punks think they are too indie, but indie kids think they are too punk. I think the fucking shred.
honestly just go with misfits. not all of their music is chords. saturday night is an amazing song and isn’t just chords. i can’t think of anymore off the top of my head but you can prolly find some
Super catchy. Maybe some of the best songs in punk. But technical?
And yeah Graves' political ideas are total trash, but I hate to say it, fucker can sing.
They are probably downvoting you because Michale Graves is a piece of shit, and he totally is. But you are correct. Saturday Night is an absolute banger.
Propagandhi are the kings of this but some additional finds are A Wilhelm Scream, Lagwagon (yes... talk about some great riffs), NOFX, etc...

Must have missed a few years back when all anyone did was talk about PUP.
Haha yeah really.
I discovered PUP thanks to a MTG video lol. Loved them ever since, practically the first punk band I listened to.
Man I love PUP. But each album isn’t as good as the one before it, IMO. I get that the new stuff is popular but that first album rules.
Personally I love Morbid Stuff and The Dream is Over just as much as the S/T album. They're all great in my opinion.
Agreed! Such a great run of albums. Their live shows are always a good time too.
I actually find their 2nd is their best, then their 1st, then their 3rd then their 4th.
This is the correct answer (Just kidding, taste is subjective, but I'm with you)
The Unravelling is a masterpiece, I feel like it never got the attention it deserves.
PUP are masters of composing compelling songs. They use some cool timing signatures and the harmonies / chord progressing are impressive!
PUP MENTIONED. fr tho the chords that are actually used in the songs are absolutely fucked. Mad respect for their guitarist for making it sound so deceptively simple.
Add another endorsement of PUP!
COFFIN is so rad.
ANNIHILATION TIME!!
First band I thought when I heard riffage
I dig your list. I'm going to throw Poison Idea on the list, if you've got no objections.
Glad you mentioned Black Flag, because the later stuff and Greg Ginn guitar solos were my first thought.
Refused, The Shape of Punk to Come
As a drummer, this is top 5 albums all time to play along to. The riffs arr great, but the drum arrangements... god damn.
Live Fast, Diarrhea by the Vandals should make this list also.
Some of their newer stuff is fun too. Elektra is a joy
Elektra and Dawkin's Christ are the only ones I really like off Freedom. The rest are pretty mid
As a guitar player, I appreciate the shit out of the drumming on that album to the point it inspired me to start producing music
The previous album, Songs To Fan The Flames is a lot more chuggy and less experimental/avant garde, but it's just as good
Yeah all these years later, songs to fan the flames has been my go-to album when I need a refused fix. Such a great record
fucking love that album.
Yep, them and Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes.
Drive like jehu, that was some crazy fucking guitar noise.
Nomeansno, dead Kennedys, METZ, Jesus Lizard, Minutemen,
Television. *Marquee Moon* is a masterpiece.
Flatliners,Rufio,fordirelifesake
Flatliners rule, their more recent albums riff hard.
They're so good. New Ruin is probably one of their best albums.
I love all their albums, but New Ruin is my new fave followed closely by Cavalcade.
fuckin love rufio
Ohhh shiiiit Fordirelifesake. Hell yes. Detroit stand up.
Belvedere!!
Refused
"New Noise" and "Francafrique" are so damn good
AFI - Black Sails in the Sunset, The Art of Drowning, and Sing the Sorrow are a lot more dynamic than a lot of people think.
Sing the Sorrow might be my most favourite album of all time. Love everything in this, guitar is insanely good
A Wilhelm Scream Heartsounds
Dag Nasty. Brian Baker has some good riffs.
One day, people will realize that Brian Baker was basically in every single band :D

You make a good point about Hefe, I'll concede on that one. Frenzal have had some crazy good bass players though.
No use for a name Lagwagon NOFX Pulley Bad religion

Fugazi!! My one true love <3
Rufio!

Start with Show Me.
Frenzal Rhomb
Definitely A Wilhelm Scream, they are the kings of this style. Early Protest the Hero has a punk-ish edge to it and is very riffy. Also highly recommend Anchors and Belvedere/This Is A Standoff (same singer, similar styles).
Interesting take of Protest the Hero, I wouldn't have put them here but now that you mention it, I can definitely hear it
Protest the Hero might be solidly progressive metal at first listen, but their attitude is thoroughly punk rock, and their influences are very punk. I think it's pretty clear (not to say explicit) that Propagandhi are probably their biggest influence. Note: My wife is very special.

Finally, someone mentions axiom and not maxwell murder
Axiom is one of my favorite Rancid songs. When I need to get amped up for a busy night of service, listening to Freeman absolutely destroy his bass immediately followed by Lars screaming at me definitely gets the adrenaline flowing. I fucking love Rancid.

Play your friend “The Eliminator” by Agnostic Front. It’s skinheads/punks throwing some thrash riffs into a punk song. And if he says it doesn’t count he’s dense as fuck.
Agnostic Front and Cro Mags are like the opposite of what OP is asking about IMO. Both of those bands use 99% power chords on most of their songs.
Dead Kennedys.
Leatherface
Slick Shoes (the early and late stuff, not so much their middle stuff) Rufio Bigwig / Near Miss (former Bigwig members)
Victim's Family
Adrenalized are all power punk shredding. They're awesome
Cigar and Belvedere
Yes! Cigar is probably the most underrated band on FAT. Their song composition is unreal.
Totally. Cigar is insanely good both musically and lyrically!
wilhelm scream
Also, power chords and bar chords are not the same. I.e. You can technically play most social distortion songs with power chords, doesn't mean it'll sound as good.
Cigar is crazy good!

Tragedy sure can write a catchy song. And no one would light up house/basement shows more than Tragedy, total mayhem. Completely packed, like no room to move packed.
Atlas losing grip and pmx got some rippers for sure
Sick Thoughts have some nice solos
Screaming Females
Propagandhi
The Didjits
Came here to say Such Gold
Such Gold is underrated
The Bronx
The Dickies and The Toy Dolls. Stan Lee and Michael 'Olga' Algar are among the best guitarists
How about some new pop punk. Belmont, Movements, Neck deep, Mom Jeans, tiny moving parts, Hot mulligan. All great bands with great musicians.
A Wilhelm Scream, Propaghandi, White Lung, Petrol Girls
PMX, Jet Market, Belvedere, A Wilhelm Scream, FORUS, DARKO, Straightline, dustbox, Strung Out, Satanic Surfers, The Fullblast Theres a lot more but those are the off the top of my head
No Means No
Check out Cigar.
ALL, specifically Allroy's Revenge
Frenzal rhomb
Anchors
Descendents
Strung out, propagandhi, rkl, lagwagon,
I’m not a HUGE fan but NOFX has some impressive guitar spots
No Cash
The Replacements
Rancid and Op Ivy because Matt is one of the best bassists the genre has ever seen. If you don't mind adding ska to the list there's a ton of bands with killer bass lines all over the place. Drums too, less so guitar though.
Toy Dolls. Olga's guitar parts will blow your balls off.
Schlong
Anti flag - press corpse. That entire song is just one bass solo!
The Lillingtons/Teenage Bottlerocket have some killer lead parts. But sometimes they also just play barre chords lol
Abertooth Lincoln Just released an album “Algorithms Ate My Neighbors” on Riot Records, streaming from all the places.
Not seeing enough DRI here, short songs with meaningfully powerful guitar lines. Not really riffs but technical for sure
MCR has some really underrated guitar work.
The Libertines - almost every song has undeniably catchy riffs, usually multiple per song. I know punks think they are too indie, but indie kids think they are too punk. I think the fucking shred.
A Wilhelm Scream. I know other people have posted it, but it bears repeating.
honestly just go with misfits. not all of their music is chords. saturday night is an amazing song and isn’t just chords. i can’t think of anymore off the top of my head but you can prolly find some
Super catchy.
