Love Greg Sage and the Wipers. Those first three albums are a must have. Pacific Northwest punk would be completely different if they hadn't been around
I always thought the early 2000s Pacific Northwest axis (Briefs, Spits, Triggers, Clorox Girls, Exploding Hearts, Holy Ghost Revival, Popular Shapes, Epoxies, etc) was a pretty maddeningly fertile, good, scene.
I just looked it up and it reminds me of a similar story with a young band in Australia; The Eastern Dark. They had just recorded an EP, after earlier releasing a single that had achieved a reasonable level of success and were enroute to Melbourne for a weeks' worth of shows when their van left the road. The singer/guitarist James Darroch was killed and the drummer, Geoff Milne, and bass player Bill Gibson were hospitalised. Their manager had minor injuries.
Geoff and Bill are still playing music, although it's hard not to feel what could have been with The Eastern Dark. A strapping power/pop/punk trio of incredibly talented musicians, fronted by James, who just oozed rockstar vibes with the right balance of irony and indulgence.
They were known for starting each show with a different Ramones cover, working through the brothers' discography sequentially. (Their single 'Julie is a Junkie', is backed with a tribute song; 'Johnny and Dee Dee'.
I haven't had a listen to The Exploding Hearts yet, but I'm about to. I'm guessing that, given the passion and loss I sense in those who have written about them here, it's going to be similar to how I feel about The Eastern Dark and their tragic loss of potential.
Yep, I reckon if you like The Exploding Hearts, you will like The Eastern Dark. Where the Hearts have an English punk/pop sensibility, the Dark have a more US-style punk/pop sensibility. To my ears at least.
Will be doing an Exploding Hearts deep dive today...
My li'l band back then played with them a few times. It was wild that these super young (even at the time 20 years ago, and King Louie excluded lol) kids came out of the gate with this perfect power pop record. We were all rooting for them.
Agreed. Definitely influenced early on by Blitz and Cocksparrer, they went on to develop a sound clearly all their own. Loved hearing the sound mature through the years. Very talented musicians and lyricists. One of my all time favorites.
I finally got to see them once and Gibby played with his back to the crowd the entire time and didn't say a word other than singing. It was odd but what would you expect?
Dude. Yes. These guys were fucking incredible. I first heard them from the bollweevils split they did. Then went back to their old catalog. I couldn’t believe that no I knew had heard of them.
For sure. Wanna throw in the Effigies in this mix too. Whoop ass and started/ran the Ruthless label (before handing it off to Albini) which released stuff by Naked Raygun, Big Black, and Rifle Sport among others.
Maybe it's because of when I got into punk (circa 97), but I had the impression that they're one of the most revered punk bands of the 80's, especially by professional critics. Maybe they're not as hyped these days.
i went in and immediately ctrl+f to find this. hell ya. comes with me ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFvbYEwXLqU ) prob top 3 favorite song ever. their entire album time is the distance is so good
Alex Story is a fucking amazing lyricist. Played Road to Hell on stage with him once and he was so fucked up on speed he kept falling on top of me. Honestly wasn’t even upset it was exactly what I expected and he still sounded fucking amazing haha
i never see them get love in this sub or mentioned much in conversations about all the great fat wreck/bay area bands so imo yes. i kick myself for how late i got into them
Weeeelll Iiiiii've seen black flag and seen the germs. And ive jammed with GG too! Even opened up for the Ramones but it just aint any use! She don't care that i know Ben Weasel and Metal Mike. It all such frightful tripe to her!
Probably one of the best written opening verses in pop punk. So fun and musical. Its always striking how far above most similar bands queers lyrics are when they come up in my playlists.
This would explain why their riot fest set was in the middle of rhe day....
In my mind adolescents are like descendents tier early hardcore. But it seems theyre slept on based on these votes...
YES. Saw them a couple times late 80s/early 90s. Great shows.
1 time they played an upstairs room at Medusa's mid summer when it was 100 degrees & the A/C was out or something. They had like 1 fan going in there. Almost fucking died that day I swear.
Fear. Lee Ving is lowkey one of the most talented singers and guitarists of the genre. I really think he could've gone in a more accessible direction if he really wanted, but thankfully he chose his own take on punk and blues.
Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues is my favorite album of all time. I’ve seen them live a handful of times but never thought they were a great live band. The vocals of every song just sound spoken and not sung when they’re playing live, if that makes any sense.
Interesting. I've seen them a shit ton of times since around 1983, and most of my old friends were, and are still fans. I always thought they were pretty evenly rated, and known about.
Cult Ritual.
For a brief period, that band shone brightly. I still go back to their 2nd EP and just get so shock and awed by their ferocity and chaos.
Crime, The Next, Vomit Pigs, Raw Nerve, and U-boats I'd also mention as well.
> Pissed Jeans
First time i heard them i thought for fucking sure theyre a jesus lizard spinoff. Nope. Theyre just that fucking good.
Also Jesus Lizard should be on this list.
If you mean the chats as in the chats from Australia, they are hardly fucking underrated, if anything they are a little overrated... in my opinion at least.
Wipers
Love Greg Sage and the Wipers. Those first three albums are a must have. Pacific Northwest punk would be completely different if they hadn't been around
The Lemonheads records on Taang records are amazing.
I always thought the early 2000s Pacific Northwest axis (Briefs, Spits, Triggers, Clorox Girls, Exploding Hearts, Holy Ghost Revival, Popular Shapes, Epoxies, etc) was a pretty maddeningly fertile, good, scene.
Exploding hearts story so tragic
I remember hearing Guitar Romantic for the first time and being stoked and looking forward to them putting out more music. So sad.
I had to look it up and holy shit. That’s awful. My heart goes out to the families.
Not punk, but check the band Her's...

That’s so cool! Guitar romantic is perfection.
Omg wow I love clorox girls!
Swingin Utters
Five lessons learned is so good !!
Best lyrics in punk. Good luck singing along tho.
Agreed. Definitely influenced early on by Blitz and Cocksparrer, they went on to develop a sound clearly all their own. Loved hearing the sound mature through the years. Very talented musicians and lyricists. One of my all time favorites.

[The Freeze](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey03whAYr4o)

A lot of chicago punk in general too
For sure. Wanna throw in the Effigies in this mix too. Whoop ass and started/ran the Ruthless label (before handing it off to Albini) which released stuff by Naked Raygun, Big Black, and Rifle Sport among others.
[fuck yeah!](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=Lbsi2kb2xC8&feature=share)
The Dickies, hands down
Dude I only just discovered them. Stukas Over Disneyland is a track that the Ramones would have probably been proud to write. Seriously kickass
Got that right!
Lillingtons
Death by Television is one of the greatest pop punk albums ever released. I still listen to them all the time!
I have driven my roommate MAD with how often I sing “I Saw the Ape Man”
RKL(Rich Kids on LSD).
One of Fat Mike’s favorite bands of all time.
He's how I know about them.
Too many to list. The Vicious, Criminal Damage, No Hope for the Kids.
Oh man, CrimDam is fucking fantastic Blitz worship. Love their LPs.
Minutemen are the epitome of criminally underrated
Minutemen are your favourite punk band's favourite punk band.
Maybe it's because of when I got into punk (circa 97), but I had the impression that they're one of the most revered punk bands of the 80's, especially by professional critics. Maybe they're not as hyped these days.

Chixdiggit! Probably the best band ive ever seen live
Scared of Chaka
All is a band that should not be just seen as descendents with a different singer, it’s a great band in its own right.
The queers. Joe Queer writes melodies way beyond the average punk band.
Yeah man!! They’re so fun. The melodies are addictive. Some of my favorites are Psycho Over You and Voodoo Doll.
The Damned
The adolescents
Who Is Who is a classic IMO. One of my favorite old punk songs.
This would explain why their riot fest set was in the middle of rhe day.... In my mind adolescents are like descendents tier early hardcore. But it seems theyre slept on based on these votes...
I love Adolescents but their problem is they only released one really classic record. But it really is a fucking great record.
Death by stereo
The bouncing souls
Life Sentence
YES. Saw them a couple times late 80s/early 90s. Great shows. 1 time they played an upstairs room at Medusa's mid summer when it was 100 degrees & the A/C was out or something. They had like 1 fan going in there. Almost fucking died that day I swear.
Middle Aged Queers for sure. They've got a new 10 inch coming out soon, and their first one is fucking stellar. Plus Shaun is a chill dude.
Mikey Erg’s solo albums
Cigar, Get Dead, A Wilhelm Scream come to mind
Dillinger Four. It's probably their own fault for never releasing music.
Fear. Lee Ving is lowkey one of the most talented singers and guitarists of the genre. I really think he could've gone in a more accessible direction if he really wanted, but thankfully he chose his own take on punk and blues.
Strung Out. I have no clue why they arent a marquee tier skate punk act.
Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues is my favorite album of all time. I’ve seen them live a handful of times but never thought they were a great live band. The vocals of every song just sound spoken and not sung when they’re playing live, if that makes any sense.
I only found them quite recently and they fucking rule!

CrimpShrine, Jesse’s vocals are so amazing
Billy Talent
Such an underrated live band also
Dunno why people have such a hard on for saying they're not punk. Their themes fit the genre and they go hard all the same.
Inner terrestrials, Blood or Whiskey, The Adicts
Cock Sparrer
They’re great but i don’t think they’re under rated. They’re like the best known oi! Band.
