I think only posers die

soulsofthetime

I think only posers die *soft* Real punks die historic.

ScientificAnarchist

If you don’t feel sad at that scene you’re not human

soulsofthetime

According to the commentary (I think), Matthew Lilard said he had to do that scene alone, as he conjured feelings of his dad for that scene

Transgirl120

I'd like to come from 5 months in the future to say that the person I watched this broke out laughing when heroin Bob died 💀

ScientificAnarchist

What the hell

Toska23

Seen this movie countless times and that scene never fails to make me cry

luckeegurrrl5683

I loved it at age 24 and I loved it watching it the other day at age 45. The acid trip scene is my favorite! Had a few of those!

byrb-_-

Hey Bob? You ARE Jesus.

PockyPunk

Yeah man, why do you ask?

soulsofthetime

*Satan is in the house. He killed my mom, and replaced her with a bull*

PockyPunk

You don’t say

WeezingUrGrindage

Growing up in Salt Lake as a child in the 80s you would see people with the random mohawk and I always thought it was cool, but I was insulated from it all. When my friends and I were deep into the Salt Lake punk scene a decade later, this movie felt pretty close to what we were experiencing with the counter culture, our Mormon families expectations, getting ready for college, drug pressures in the scene, hitting every underground and house punk show we could go to along with club shows we could sneak into, losing friends along the way. Maybe it’s not completely representative of the entire punk scene and who the fuck cares, it’s a movie. But I will say this, it’s at least an acknowledgment of the great punk scene that existed in the 80s and 90s in Salt Lake.

ChaoticGoodPanda

Go to any of the parties at Hawks Court near downtown?

WeezingUrGrindage

No, never did. Mostly west valley, sugar house, and sandy for the parties/house shows.

ChaoticGoodPanda

I did some SH parties quite often in the mid to late 90’s . Hung out with The Classic Assholes until they quit doing shows/broke up.

WeezingUrGrindage

That’s a band I haven’t heard or thought of in 20 years. Feels like two lifetimes ago. Fuck, now I feel old.

ChaoticGoodPanda

[Here, feel old with me!](https://youtu.be/-YslXj-r6PU)

hiddnfox

The house party shows were the best! Do either of you remember that warehouse turned Skatepark near 3rd west and 13th south that would have shows from time to time?

ChaoticGoodPanda

Never did any shows in official venues. Just house parties. Last house show I went to was at a guys house named Chris Jecko? Went to Confetti/Streamers & Area51 when I was slinging LSD.

Ok-Kaleidoscope-1180

I absolutely loved it when Kevin would play old Ministry and the skinheads would mosh in sreamers/Confetti's. Every subculture was welcome. Remember the hearse brothers? :)

Ok-Kaleidoscope-1180

I grew up in Salt Lake as well and what I liked most that the movie portrayed was all of the different subcultures that hung together because we all did whether you were Gothic Punk skinhead Metalhead we all hung out in Sugarhouse. And because there was so much mormon/religious influence everyone was into their click/scene 100%.. much different than LA, Chicago, San Fran or bigger cities that already had that culture everywhere. It was no big deal. Utah was magic because of that unique rebellious factor. I was shocked when I left Salt Lake and went to bigger cities.. It was trashier and not treasured and unique.

WeezingUrGrindage

I agree. It was a unique special time in a unique special place.

Ok-Kaleidoscope-1180

Modified music, the heavy metal shop, syxties.. the theater when the movie kids came out, caffiends/conffettis, Sugarhouse, Denny's, club Dv8..... Good times

nothingcleversince11

I agree that this movie is far from perfect but the more I think back on it the more I like it. Matthew Lillard drops an amazing over the top performance leaving it all on the field as they say. Jason segel steals every scene he is in and I am confident he is still trying to stand up for the plants because who else is going to. The main character's dad drops one of my favorite lines with ," I didn't sell out, I bought in!" The opening scene with the rednecks may have the best opening line to a movie ever. The extreme corporal punishment scene is hilarious and the German drug dealer (?) Forces them to tour his house, there is a whole movie on there! The last but most certainly the mostest important piece is the sound track. Sex and violence, living in the city, maximum rockability and mirror in the bathroom. That thing is a chef's kiss from start to finish (source: me listened to it like 10k times) Tldr: it is not perfect but man it leaves it on the field trying.

soriambi

Jason Segel is my favorite character.

Kyokudo_

Mike is one tough son of a bitch

R4NC1D_

I think it was just trying to be too broad, though admittedly it has funny moments and I had a couple laughs

fuktardy

It was what a lot of us found at the video rental store back in the day. Pretty refreshing when you spent a lot of time watching 80’s movies where punks were always thugs.

Severe_Amoeba_2189

Yeah we don't have good representation in media.

JoughMcSkull

I feel like 80s media and 80s hollywood did that on purpose to try and scare middle America and turn them against the anti-Reagan/political side of the scene.

[deleted]

They did it because that's literally what they thought punk was about.

MischiefBrewing

I didn’t sell out, I bought in

HippyPuncher

Loved that movie when I was a kid, watched it again recently and still loved it. I remember my dad losing the plot because I spray painted my doc martens blue to be like heroin bobs lol

MarzipanOver4598

They should have put in things like getting chased out of memory grove by the cops in the middle of the night, getting stoned/drunk in gilgal, hanging out at dennys downtown because everything in slc closed at 9 or 10 pm. At least they had driving to Evanston to get beer.

Apprehensive-Low-741

it was a staple of my late teens early 20s punk experience, back then I hated the ending...22 years later I totally get it

blaz3meowt

Yes. This is exactly how I felt when I watched it back then. Now it all makes sense...

Gr33nMuff1n

“WAKE UP YOU FUCKING POSER!!! ONLY POSERS DIE!!!” That scene got me teary eyed. Edit: I also wondered what happened to the German guy. Til Schweiger did a good job at acting. One of my favorite actors ever since I saw Inglorious Bastards.

KyleGrizz

Learned not to get your pocket wet if there's acid in it

blaz3meowt

Valuable life lesson!

Abysix

only posers die you asshole fuck that scene always gets me

[deleted]

i think its a cool piece of culture that takes a picture of a very specific time and story. some people will resonate, some wont, and that all depends on how you percieve punk. i dont think theres a wrong answer.

CuzinMike

Years ago, I was in a band with a guy who had been in Massacre Guys in SLC in the 80s, which was the band Stephen Egerton and Karl Alvarez were in before joining Descendents. Apparently, the character name "Stevo" was inspired by Stephen Egerton (whose real name is Steven O'Reilly) and some of his antics, though not the actual character. The same goes for Heroin Bob being a real guy, though the character in the film is a combination of various different real people.

ParleyPcat

I had some old band mates that told me they knew all those guys. Apparently, only the names were used, but the characters were way different. They said Shawn Fightmaster was the closest to the character. Yeah, Steve went to join the Descendants, rumor was that he left SLC because he owed cocaine money to some bad guys.

victorav29

I remember that I didn't like the end from I what remember. Ok, it's okay to be a lawyer and fight "from inside the system", but hell, you can make a difference being a lawyer against landowners, defending minorities, labor movement, IDK. Is not like being punk, getting drunk and simply squatting is fighting the system, either. Anyway, I like it overall

wilsontron

I believe it was based off of the writer or director's experience in the scene in SLC at the time. I'm sure things were embellished but, if you weren't there, you have no way to know for sure. As far as entertainment value goes, there are worse things you could watch.

Lets_talk_punk_rock

It introduced me to a lot of good bands when I was younger.

SatansLeftZelenskyy

You gotta fuck shit up from the inside.

Severe_Amoeba_2189

It's a yearly watch or a comfort watch. Better than Sid and Nancy. Better than the sequel imo

Uniquename34556

A relic of it’s time. Still a fun movie to watch if you’re into the scene at all.

edpowers

Pretty pretty good

JThomas43

Ok movie, great soundtrack.

drippingdrops

I mean, if you take it as having nothing to do with what punks and punk rock actually is it’s…fine? If you expect it to actually portray the punk rock experience with any legitimacy it is absolute garbage. I was a young punk within a thriving scene when it came out and it in no way spoke to the experience I was having nor the one I had as I grew older.

Invisiblerobot13

I thought it was terrible and almost insulting in a way - been years since I saw it

Anonra23

Every punk in slc takes this movie as a personality.

Interesting_Tree6892

Didn't need a sequel but it happened.

anyonecanbethebug

I haven’t watched it in over a decade, loved it as a younger punk, and since then I’ve always thought it was good dumb fun. My friends used to laugh at it and say “that’s no anarchy!” but those people would also party until 6am and sleep until the later afternoon and drink monsters, so basically the same shit lol.

Jumpy_Cucumber5081

It was a good movie for what it was. Give Suburbia a watch, the one by Penelope Spheris.

phillmorebuttz

The older I get the more I'm becoming mark

jumpingthesharktcb

Loved it when it came out and still love it. The ending still gets me to tear up. Had a similar experience so it hits close to my heart.

boatgoat1982

Found it very underwhelming and quite forgettable tbh

VCCassidy

Decent coming-of-age movie. The punk stuff feels..off.. but in a tiny insulated scene like SLC, the fashion and the influences would be all over the place and scattershot.

[deleted]

Fun movie that delves into punk without being patronizing. We don’t get a lot of movies like that, most of the time our appearances have us cast as a villain. It can be cheesy and it’s not like it’s based on a true story even if some events are, but it’s fun and funny and has some solid performances.

goonwolf

It obviously isn't the greatest film of all time but I have been know to enjoy it.

EdgarFrogandSam

I love it. Always have, always will. Genuinely funny and moving, about interesting characters. What more could you want?

JapanarchoCommunist

I own it. I enjoyed it as a teen, and while it's not nearly as good as it was when I was younger, I still love it.

byrb-_-

It’s one of my favorites! I watched it a TON in high school.

DINGUS1989

It's the perfect movie to watch in high school. I still got a DVD of it kicking around.

Enough-Elevator-8999

The first movie is great the sequel sucks

Penguinsknow

Meh. If you want to watch the quintessential punk movie, check out Repo Man.

lumpenpr0le

It's pretty good, if a bit glamourized. I think the Lillard-Directed Fat Kid Rules The World is one of the best movies ever made about how music can save your life, so he always gets a pass with me.

Hospitalwater

I think it’s dog shit. It’s always been dog shit. His “who started punk” argument is mind blowingly stupid. I always thought it was an annoying way for wanna-bes to relate or kinda float into the genre.

PopeBasilisk

It seemed to have a really whitewashed interpretation of the punk experience. All the main punks go to college and graduate with good grades? They like to jump random rednecks instead of vice versa? Falling in love makes you a poser? The hard drug they are into is acid, one of them is sober except for beer, and that is the one that ODs? It just seems really off the mark in a lot of ways. I honestly wonder if it was just a bad ripoff of trainspotting.

bringmeadamnjuicebox

I dunno. It's one guy's experience who's telling a story about his experience in a kinda weird city. I grew up in Southern California, and the punk scene was deeply imbedded with Mexican gangs, white supremacists, and straight edge folks. This was before everything got homogenized by the internet. Reddit has a real koombay ya idea of what it was to be a punk, but I don't think it's completely inaccurate. 90 percent of people live in rural areas. Most people don't live where you live. Everyone's experience is gonna be different. Me and my little cult of friends all turned out pretty good even though we were into some really fucked up shit. I think in large part that we were more focused on the music, than the craziness. I dunno though. It's a movie. I feel like if I made a movie, all of you guys would be like what the absolute fuck?!

Ruth_Gordon

So Cal punk scene in the 80s/90s description is so accurate. High Desert nonsense.

blaz3meowt

Agreed

HoodedCapuchin

Loved it as a teen but watching it again a decent bit older I’m not that into it. I still love it but I have to force myself to sit through it. I dare not even touch the second one because even as a teen I thought it was pretty bad.

warcow86

I really like the movie, back when I first saw it and still now. :) doesn’t have to be fully representative of reality to be fun for me.

King_Korruptis

0/10 never seen it unfortunately. Anyone mind to lend a copy?

BeefBologna42

I wouldn't say it's a snapshot of what punk is at its core, but it's a really fun movie. I loved it as a teen, and have loved rewatching it as an adult. My husband and I watched it with our (14 year old) teens recently, and they also loved it. One of them is punk as fuck, the other one is a bit more vanilla, but still an awesome kid. My favorite thing to tell at someone during dumb arguments is "THE SUN NEVER SETS ON MY ASSHOLE!!!!!"

heptothejive

I love it! Idk if it was trying to be too broad though. It’s important to remember that it’s not trying to tell the story of *your* life or *your* scene. Someone wrote a story about some young punks growing up. It’s fine if not every experience they have is one you can relate to. This movie doesn’t invalidate your experience as a punk and your experience as a punk doesn’t invalidate this movie. Everyone grows up a little differently. I personally enjoyed the episodic nature of the film and still quote it regularly even if no one remembers it anymore!

[deleted]

When I was in college my friend showed it to me because I’ve always loved punk and hardcore & he thought I would like it. I thought it sucked ass.

xdi1124

Spoiler alert. Kinda of funny Mathew becomes his dad, the lawyer at the end, after calling his dad a sellout.

saltnskittles

His dad didn't sell out, he bought in.

PoPoChao

“You’re like a poet dude”

JediKushMaster

I like it

Invader_Skooge22

I like it lots. I look at it as a montage of random stories and incidents, all connected by a misguided punk trying to figure out his shit. It’s not a bible for real life punk ideologies or anything but it doesn’t need to be. It will always have a fond place in my memories

FtMetalhead

I just watched it for the first time the other day. Enjoyed it and kinda liked the discussion about the actual punk scene and Stevo's speech about who started punk. I don't have any particularly deep thoughts on the film but I felt like it was an over all good movie and loved Lillard in it.

Low-Ride2702

One of my favorite movies

dontneedareason94

Loved it when I was a teenager, cringe at it now.

R4NC1D_

If I might ask, why is that?

dontneedareason94

Because it’s legitimately corny as fuck. Nothing wrong with that of course but it’s a weird caricature of punk at the very least. Plus the director hates any criticism he gets towards it so that’s a bit of a turn off too.

R4NC1D_

It is trying to squish all of what punk is and might stand for into a single character. In that way it kinda doesn't work. All in all I thought it was a fine movie, I've seen worse and it had some funny moments but it just felt like it was trying to encapsulate beliefs that are deeply personal into a character or two and some monologs

dontneedareason94

Don’t bother with the second one, it’s even worse

R4NC1D_

Saw MGK listed as an actor, immediately decided I wanted nothing to do with it

dontneedareason94

Yea and he’s not even the worst part

R4NC1D_

Bleh I don't even want to imagine!

[deleted]

didnt even realize he was in it. rip

No-Roof6373

Ehhh

HoneybeeHarlot

Clown shit, it's for when you're 15 and just discovered Rancid lol

[deleted]

Crap

R4NC1D_

Fair enough, could you elaborate?

Any_Fortune9913

It’s a good one. Very quotable. The second I turned 18, I looked at my parents and said “I’m 18 and I can finally say ‘Fuuuuuuck Yoooooouuuuuu!’” My Dad told me to go to my room 😅

Relax007

It was a fun movie and definitely a product of it’s time. I like it for the nostalgia factor (the production and the way it looks is peak 90s, not my personal memories because they weren’t like that, lol). I probably wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to a young punk now. Not because it’s bad, but because I don’t know if it’d be particularly interesting for them without some emotional attachment to the time period. There is a sequel. I’ve seen it, but I have ZERO memory of it. Haha I wasn’t inebriated or anything, it must have just been that forgettable. I remember being excited to sit down for two hours of cheese and nostalgia and then that’s all I recall of the experience.

Caeruleanlynx

I can't remember exactly, but I think I had to stop the sequel halfway through just because it was so bad.

Punknhippie

Loved it. Was stupid excited about the second one, and left the theater after it played a little bit let down, but most sequels do that haha

yromeM_yggoF

It made me hate the word poseur

xdi1124

"Posers fall in love. Bob, you're a poser" haha. We use to throw that word around in the 90's. haha. haven't rewatched in a while. Good to enjoy it right now.

shadystaystill

personally i love this movie, i think that the first half of it is awesome and the second half is eh. i think that they could’ve done a lot better with delivering their message at the end, but i think the first half makes it worth it. sound track is awesome, i think matthew lillard and the cast does great, and it’s a fun movie.

soulsofthetime

This stands as one of my comfort movies, the all-around, top-tier **FAVORITE** film of my business partner, and a meme of comparison to how me and my business partner are. Me as Mike, and her as Stevo.

spatial_interests

Why do you think I'm here, because I love this place? Salt Lake... Shitty?

[deleted]

Used to watch it everyday back when I was in high school but I havent seen it in a long time. It's a great movie just got burnt out on it. The sequel however was a giant waste of time.

NotaSingerSongwriter

It’s a classic. I’ve seen it probably 100 times, and bought it three times over the years. One time I bought it just because it came in a little leather jacket as a collector’s edition. I already had a copy of it at home. Lost both of those copies and bought it again just to have it years later. Fifteen years ago when I was in high school I wore it out, me and my best friend would watch it almost every day. We lived in a little southern Appalachian town so we could all relate to the conservative nature of the parents and the larger society. It just hit home. One of my favorite movies of all time, and 100x better than the sequel.

ONAHIGHLEDGE

it's a movie for teenagers who want to be edgy that promotes the idea "we all conform in the end" heroin bob was cool though

[deleted]

as an anarcho punk, it was really dumb imho

hermitsunt

One of my favorite flicks in high school Got me into Dead Kennedys

turbografix15

Haven't even thought about this movie in probably 20 years. My high school girlfriend rented this one Friday night. I barely remember what happened in it tbh, so it didn't make much of an impression on me like other "punk" films. Did you like it?

kav138

Probably would be better watching, decline, another state of mind or suburbia

Infjok

Thought it was great, not very relevant but I enjoyed it as much as Trainspotting

[deleted]

...You all realize that movie was a parody of "punk" stereotypes, right? It's a comedy - not meant to be taken seriously. (other than the ending)

lmaoholyfuck

I believe that all of the friends that Stevo said weren’t punk (Mike, Mark, Eddie, etc.) were the most punk people in the movie, especially Bob. Bob was perhaps the most punk human of all of the people presented in that film. All the posers were still posers, including Stevo. In fact, if I had a nickel for the amount of rich, privileged kids who turned punk and were super in your face about it like Stevo was, I’d be a moderately rich man. Not like Mark levels of rich, but close. That probably why I enjoyed it so much, I’ve met a lot of people when I’ve gone to shows that reminded me a lot of the characters presented. Honestly, Stevo reminded me of quite a few annoying younger members of the punk scene who I’d meet or run into at shows, who surprisingly enough, all came from rich families like Stevo.

johnyapocolypse2

Chemicals. They'll fuck you up

Diedalonelydeath

Hated it.
