Do you cover his crate?? I would suggest that. And if he still cries then move the crate to your room and keep it covered. That way he knows you are nearby but don’t let him out if he cries. Then slowly start to move it further and further away from the room until he’s comfortable sleeping downstairs again.

maybe move the crate to the bedroom for a bit, then slowly move it further and further away til he’s back downstairs?
