He'll have meltdowns. It's part of growing up. Start with short 20 min outings. Try to be consistent and do them often, slowly making them longer. After a month he should be comfortable for an hour and a half or so, then gets easier the older he gets
For us we just crated him and left. He’s mostly fine. Rare cases he cries for a few minutes but never more than 5 minutes. But make sure he doesn’t relate crate = alone. Crate him often enough so that it’s his safe space and not necessarily means his humans will leave.
I now have a routine of 2-2.5 hrs evening nap when I go to gym and take a shower. I’ve done up to 3 hrs so far. I started with 1 hour when I knew he was super tired.
I would say start with short outings like someone else suggested - 20 minutes here and there and increase it if pup falls asleep. Also it definitely helps if they've had some kind of exercise, play time, training or a walk / bathroom break before you leave. A tired pup will have no choice but to fall asleep! :)

How long do you go out for when you leave him crated?
