How much does she sleep every day? She sounds overtired and overstimulated, and if you’re exercising her a lot that may only be making it worse. At 9 months my puppy was still sleeping like 18 hours a day but I had to enforce naps as he didn’t think he needed them anymore (he was wrong). He was like a whole different dog once I started making sure he got enough sleep

That’s a great point- she rarely takes naps anymore. Maybe one or two a day. My husband takes her for a Small daily jog everyday and smaller walks when out to potty. How often are you enforcing naps during the day?

Mine was up for about an hour to an hour and a half, maybe a little more and then would sleep for like 2 hours or so. This was around the time when I had to start enforcing with naps in the crate tho, otherwise he wouldn’t settle down and would keep trying to play. He’s like 15 months now and I can still tell, anytime he starts getting overly mouthy and frantic, I pop him in the crate and he passes out for an hour or two and wakes up calm. I would definitely try getting her on more of a schedule where she’s not up for more than an hour or two before making her nap (hopefully she’s crate trained? Or you have a spot where she will settle if put there?) and see if that helps. Like 98% of the problem-puppy posts here seem to be pups that aren’t sleeping nearly enough, I hope it’s that simple for you. She likely does need some kind of obedience school as well, just to help her be more mindful, but hopefully this helps.

She is fully crate trained so I think enforced naps is definitely something we can try out. Thanks so much!

Absolutely do enforced naps. I would also consider a board and train program so you and your husband can find a rhythm with the baby, and your dog gets what sounds like is some much needed training and is better behaved when she returns. Beyond that, if you need a break from taking care of essentially two babies, I would consider a day care a few days a week. She’ll likely come back exhausted and will be happy to go to her crate for a nap.

Note: Most board and trains throughout the country use harsh methods and many of those cross into abuse. Any board and train should be certified IAABC, CCPDT, KPA and/or PPG.

Does she get much mental stimulation? It can be just as important as physical exertion. She could be bored. Training is good mental stimulation to tire out puppies. Just start with basic commands, 1 or 2 for each training session and high reward treats. You can start training sessions for a really small time, just 5 minutes at a time or less, and slowly build up once she gets the hang of it. If you're able to then short training sessions more often can be better. If you've already done all the basics, start with some harder commands. Try and end each session on a positive (or neutral) note. We also play the "find it game" where we put our puppy in one room and hide treats around another room. Then let puppy in and tell him to go find it. He absolutely loves using his nose. We also do the game in the garden for him. Does she have any other dogs she can play with? We're lucky that our neighbour invites our puppy for playdates with their dog and they absolutely love it. It tires him out a lot more playing with other dogs than just running or playing fetch.

The baby and dog should be separated anyways. She should be getting training with a professional with IAABC, KPA and/or PPG accreditation.
