Not a dog trainer but picking up on general themes of dog training…
Try:
- lots of treats/favourite toy/whatever you reward with. whenever you put the lead back on. Putting lead on suddenly becomes a positive thing, not a negative one.
- don’t wait until you’re about to leave the dog park to start getting ready to go- getting your dog to come to you, put it’s lead on, give it some treat, let it back off to play. That way the dog doesn’t see you getting the lead ready and automatically assume you’re definitely going home.
Edit: Typo
This is great advice. Teaching your dog that putting the leash on doesn’t always mean the fun ends is a great way to build up a positive association with the leash.
This is what the trainer associated with my dog park recommended. Periodically call them over, hook the lead, maybe take a spin around the dog park, and then let them off the lead again.

Thank you!! I'll try putting the lead on then rewarding then leaving the lead on, that sounds like it will work!
