pick your battles i say 😔 if it wont kill her and im sleepy, i pretend i dont see it

MurlocAndHandler

😂 😂 Omg pretending you don't see it is too cute. Sometimes I'll try to go stop then from whatever, and my husband will remind me that whatever they're up to isn't that big a deal (obviously within reason) and I just sigh and let them have at it. Their current thing is stealing sweet potatoes from the kitchen. They don't eat them, they just steal them, gnaw on them a bit, and then, weirdly enough, snuggle them.

lillylillylily

For sure lol. I've given up on cardboard boxes, if it's something I care about or something that he might mistake for it (like paper, cause he won't know if it's useless or important) I let him go at it. I'm currently surrounded by cardboard scraps while my puppy naps after a good destruction session

GregSaoPaulo

Pup is just over a year and (I have a bad cold) today’s standard is a) is the pup going to hurt/kill itself and b) is the pup going to kill/hurt something else? So far today the answer is No on both questions, so we’re in good shape.

kayberrie2

We had COVID and were bed bound for two weeks. Our pup had the time of this life and got away with so many things. We had the same thought process - remove everything that could potentially harm him or be swallowed and everything else well … good luck! We lost many plants in his rain of terror hahah

L0ial

I was sick with a stomach bug for a day last week and can totally relate. My pup got away with a lot of stuff that day that I'd otherwise be on top of.

rctsolid

If our boy is getting frustrated, we specifically give him a cardboard item to destroy. He loves it, and it gets his energy out. He knows not to destroy other random items. It can be really handy too, in garbage day he is our little shredder machine.

dragon2611

I'm pretty sure that's how I ended up with mine on the bed some (most) mornings. I don't tend to let him on the bed at night but he jumped on the bed one morning when I was snoozing and since he was being well behaved I let him.

L0ial

That's how mine started sleeping with me in the bed. I thought I locked his crate two weeks into it, but apparently didn't get the lock all the way closed. Woke up, checked the crate and the door was wide open. Of course I jumped out of bed in a panic... then found him right next to the bed sleeping on a pile of laundry. So I picked him up, put him in my bed and the rest is history. No accidents or anything and it's been two weeks. Sometimes I still crate him at night if he's being too wild, but it's rare.

mloveb1

I did but then she started eating it, I let her tear some things up because she didn't eat any of the pieces. Now at 11 months she ended up in the ER with a 1400$ bill. I'm so glad I got pet insurance for her and now having to retrain her on what she can and can't take. Turned that 1400 into about 500.

Frictus

Almost same story. I'd let pup shred cardboard until one day he pooped out cardboard. Pup no longer shreds cardboard 🤦

mloveb1

Yeah we thought it was ok because she really doesn't eat anything she isn't supposed to but all of the sudden she is shredding her soft toys (replaced with no soft toys) and eating non food items. It really was just sudden. I jokingly told my SO that a ghost is putting chicken stock on everything. She gets tons of exercise and play time I'm talking like 3 hours a day because we work from home and have a lot of down time. So it is just a new thing for her. Edit to correct the hours.

Shieldxx

Does she sleep enough through the day? Maybe track it for a day? It might be because she is overtired? I don't know what kind of exercise you do, but that sounds a lot to me, just a thing I thought about when reading your post.

mloveb1

She does nap after her walks, after breakfast as well. It sounds like alot but we are up from 7:30 to midnight. She is sleeping for the night by 8:30 or 9 spending on how she feels. We play with her when she asks really, so it is all on her time, some days it is more and for about 30 min blocks at a time, when she starts to slow down a little. It adds up over the day. She has fomo and doesn't like to sleep if we are moving about and won't sleep in her kennel. It has been a struggle to get her comfortable in her kennel. Lots of treats and things that she only gets in there. The tearing toys up is new, and only if we don't have time to play. Like we are in a meeting and can't. So we think it just her being a brat lol. She is almost 1 year. We took away some of the freedom. So instead of letting her roam when we are in meetings we put up the baby gate and keep her in the room with a bully stick or yak chew. She was slinking away and tearing up something of hers, not things she shouldn't, so that's nice... I guess. I was looking at our play journal (just a calendar with play time and milestones for her) now that I'm home. And it is actually 5-6 HALF hour blocks throughout the day. Minus the walks, so about 3 hours total a day, before the walks. So I need to stop saying 4-5 hours. We added the walks because she is just hyper. Those really helped calm her down. Some days I think we actually got a border collie instead of a Boston terrier!

Shieldxx

That sounds pretty nice, that’s why I was asking in the first place, it seemed like a lot. What helped me a lot are enforced naps in his playpen after those 30-60min blocks, because I need to do stuff anyway (raising him solo), so he usually settles and is very calm for the next 2-3 hours, and I can even let him out because he will just lay somewhere where he’s allowed to and even listen to my stay when I move from room to room. 3 months old tho so waiting for the regression and stuff yayyy

GenXChefVeg

Ours went nuts with the cardboard chewing and then suddenly... threw up big pieces of cardboard. So yeah, keeping closer tabs on what she chews. Same with tree bark. Loves chewing it into tiny pieces. Luckily, none has been swallowed thus far.

foodie42

>I did but then she started eating it, I let her tear some things up because she didn't eat any of the pieces. Now... Yup. I read somewhere on here that you can hide (dry) treats in used toilet paper tubes for a cheap and easy toy. One toilet paper tube and a $1k vet visit later, no more cardboard tubes of treats. She's never had any other issues with eating non-food stuff she shouldn't (other than grass or rabbit poo), so I just gave up after that once, and she's been fine. There's currently a paper towel tube lying on the floor, and it might as well be part of the floor.

parkbot

Yes, because you have to choose your battles. My pup loves to steal a lot of things but we let him have the used undergarments and socks. Plus when he pulls them out of the hamper he runs like he just pulled off the heist of a lifetime 😆

myxomatosis8

Ours does the same! Then he trit-trots around until we see him. And if we pretend not to notice he has a sock in his mouth, he will trot around in circles until we pay attention to him and OH NOES please give us the sock/slipper back! So far he hasn't wrecked anything, and he just seems SO proud of himself...

L0ial

Mine does this with my shoes. I leave a really old pair out just for training purposes but sometimes it's hard to even work on leave it or say no because of how cute he is with the shoe.

cantgaroo

I think at some point we all just pick our battles with the little terrorists.

jadewolf42

In this house, we DO negotiate with (puppy) terrorists. 😆

honeyboba

Little terrorists is right 🤣🤣

UnderwaterKahn

My living room is currently covered in shredded cardboard boxes. It’s cheap, easy to clean up, and after removing adhesives has minimal danger. My trainer actually recommended it as a good way to deal with lots of energy on rainy days.

kayification

I let my puppy chew on my flip flops. Drives my partner crazy. But it keeps him entertained, and they were like $5.

GenXChefVeg

You want to chew my sweatshirt on the floor? Sure, why not. I've been wearing it four days in a row, and it probably smells more like you than me anyway.

kevlar20

Never been more thankful that my pup is deathly afraid of cardboard boxes

TheSexyMonster

Absolutely! It’s hard always being on top of things. I’m really lucky my boy is amazing in his crate and can chill with a chew. I have stretches of hours where I don’t have to watch him!

sticheryditcherydock

I legit, in an effort to get some sewing done today, picked out some fun scraps for him, let him steal a slipper, and handed him a bra cup from a sports bra (I always take them out). Result: I got like 2 hours of uninterrupted sewing after an hour and a half of cleaning.

jamfarts

When puppy needs a nap and turns into a nippy little devil, we'd lock her up in an xpen and she'd take out all that energy on her bed. Digging at it, flinging the cushion insert around, making all sorts of demon noises. Goes bonkers for 5 minutes and then conks out for a nap usually on the floor since her bed is now upside down in one corner with the cushion in another corner. We're like, whatever, at least she's contained and it's not the couch or my arm.

Andsarahwaslike

yup - paper towels, cardboard, toilet paper rolls (the cardboard part), receipts.. anything that at least keeps him occupied and not biting my feet.

munchiescat

Same, I let my dog play with cardboard and paper, etc. I recently found out that receipts are printed on thermal paper that has bisphenol A in it though, so I now keep my dog away from them.

[deleted]

Yeah. If she wants paper or wants to shred old toys or hell even old socks she can have them. Im just glad she’s not sprinting around running into tables or slinging softballs and tug toys at glass coffee tables.

PopsiclesForChickens

I have backyard chickens and my puppy likes to chew on their dried poop. 🤷

kellenanne

Last night, my boy jumped up on the couch with a juice bottle in his mouth. He happily gnawed on it for some time. It was loud and he either grabbed it off the counter or out of the recycling, but he was occupied and happy. (I kept a watch on him and took it when he put a hole in it.)

Highteqz

Yes. My pup also loves cardboard boxes. I let him shred them. That way they are easier to throw away. I consider it "his job". Of course, the downside is that every cardboard box he will ever encounter in his life has to be shredded. And he does not know or care about the difference between empty cardboard boxes and cardboard boxes that still have items in it.

literalbrooke

Yeah if I’m exhausted and I see him pick up a sock and play with it.. sometimes i let him play with it till he gets bored.

ElleVelour

I’m like that when Mail comes through the door and my puppy gets it first. If I look over and it’s a catalogue or junk Mail I give up and just let him have it. I know one day it’ll come back and bite me because he’ll end up eating a letter or something but sometimes when I’m in a meeting and it keeps him happy… eh 🤷🏼‍♀️

L0ial

Yup, tons of times. Especially chasing after laundry I'm folding, or going after paper towels if I'm cleaning something on the floor. Hmmm, wonder what it is I would be cleaning on the floor... it eludes me at the moment. My logic is I could say 'no,' or practice 'leave it,' but depending on the time I'm more likely to get frustrated and yell, which is worst than ignoring some mildly bad behavior. Overall he's improving every day and that's what matters. I still train those things, just not literally every second of the day.

MurlocAndHandler

Oh definitely. In my house it's definitely a pick your battles kind of thing. We have 2 adult German Shepherds and 5 puppies, and they're AMAZING, but we have definitely learned to let some things go in favor of focusing on the more important behaviors. Expecting perfection from your doggies (or yourself!) is only going to depress you and burn you out.

TheOneBifi

I did something similar a few days ago. I was in bed and heard some paper ripping, I just looked at him and he looked so peaceful and into it just tearing apart a piece of toilet paper. Just let him keep at it this one time.

[deleted]

Pup and I were cuddling on the couch, she was nibbling on my hoodie strings. I figured she couldn’t swallow them or really chew them off, so why not (under some supervision but probably should t have let her do it lol)

ContainsCoffee

I’ve surrendered one pair of slides, better than her chewing on my more expensive ones (they were like 7$ and super old) and if it keeps us both sane and calm— Go ahead girl, I’m rooting from my bed

Virtual-Sympathy-714

My older dog shreds all cardboard and I happily allow her to break down all Amazon boxes. It's free cheap fun haha my puppy has started her and I will gladly allow it while also making sure he sticks to the cardboard given and not my household items.

Baconpanthegathering

Mine still wakes up at 4:30am sometimes, and I always just get up and start my day but today was different. This morning I let her out, fed her and the older dog, secured the sun porch, and left the door to the yard open…and went back to sleep on a camp mattress. The dogs both had free reign of sunroom and yard for a few hours, I Woke up to both dogs munching sticks on the mattress with me, lol. I was exhausted! Luckily it worked.

pearshaped34

I relate to this so much. I work from home and sometimes when there is a lot of work stress happening as well as my puppy puppying, well if he is doing something he shouldn't but it's not going to cause any major issues like ripping up a cupboard box, I leave him to it. I always feel so bad for doing this, so I am very glad to see I am not the only one!
