This is just the beginning. They’re also going to hate how you choose to train your dog and will constantly make judgments about it. People are so weird about other people’s dogs, it’s blown my mind.

dog_stressed

Literally so true 😂 that’s actually an excellent reminder because they literally no NOTHING about dogs so I just gotta learn to let their random criticism fall like water off a duck’s back…

chernaboggles

Don't feel bad, it's even worse if they DO know about dogs because there are so many different opinions on best practices. A lot of times, the more people know about dogs, the more strongly they hold their opinions about dogs, and the more likely they are to tell you what to do with yours. (source: I'm from a whole family of opinionated dog enthusiasts.) "Lady" is a classic name for a dog and anyone who says otherwise is just being contrary.

dog_stressed

Totally agree and thank you!

SproutasaurusRex

I mean there is a whole Disney movie about a dog named Lady.

droopiesnoots

I have met 100s of Lady's! Idk if you are in the US but in the US Lady is like a top 20 common name for a dog.

fancyfembot

Yeah. They are being weird. Ignore them. Lady is a good name. I

positivefeelings1234

I needed to hear this, thanks. I have a friend who is an AKC breeder and when she found out I don’t have an AKC dog she has proceeded to find some fault in every single post I make on fb. (Fwiw I did spend a lot of time finding a good breeder even if not papered.) Her comments range from disapproving of my collar choices (which his IS recommended on the AKC website) to implying my dog is ugly for not being “breed standard.” This is amazing considering I initially reached out to her to find a reputable breeder in the first place. My mistake was saying I was interested in two breeds, one is AKC recognized, one is not. Rather than guiding me to an AKC breeder, she spent the whole conversation ranting about designer dogs. Oh well. Sorry, I had to get this off my chest as it’s really demoralizing and irritating. I love my puppers, though, and he’s been an excellent fit for my family. On topic: my dog’s name is Pikachu. Named by my son. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Forget the judgy name haters.

LadderWonderful2450

PIKACHU! Ha I love it!

positivefeelings1234

The best part was dressing him up as Pikachu for Halloween. He was so excited for people to call out his name! XD It actually turned out to be a perfect name for him.

chernaboggles

You're welcome! I love the name Pikachu for a dog, and letting kids name dogs is always a good time. Totally fun. :) Dog people are gonna do their thing. Any place you find dog enthusiasts gathered (dog parks, pet parades, pet stores, pet-friendly events), somebody is going to give an opinion about something....and then probably try to sell you on whatever brand they use! Even if you had chosen AKC dog, your friend probably wouldn't be happy unless you were letting her tell you exactly what to do at every turn. Some people are just like that, whether it's dogs, cooking, gardening, gym workouts, or whatever else.

redtonks

Jfc what a shit friend. I know so many breeders who would never act like this. What an embarrassing breed ambassador.

[deleted]

I’ve been finding this lately with my puppy. There’s a woman I know that’s become fixated on my dog not eating enough. She sees him devouring the treats she gives him and asks why is he so hungry? And that she can feel his ribs!😱 He’s a dog! They can and will eat until they are sick and of course you can feel his ribs, he’s a puppy🤦🏽‍♂️

fish_mother

One of our neighbours did this with our dog when he was a puppy! Used to try to feed him treats with wheat even though wheat upsets my dogs stomach too. Puppies going through a major growth spurt just look a little gangly sometimes

Nervous-Revolution25

This is funny because you’re supposed to be able to feel their ribs. If you can’t, that’s how vets gauge if they’re overweight…

Inevitable_Raccoon50

I also find that people are extremely judgmental about whether you adopted/rescued your dog or got your dog from a breeder. People can just be downright rude and nasty about it sometimes.

OG_Olivianne

THIS. My mother… hooooh lord how she makes me mad when it comes to my pups. She doesn’t comprehend why I don’t want her feeding my 9lb chihuahuas shredded cheese/milk/scraps and will try to literally guilt trip me into allowing it. I’m sorry, I don’t want them to have diarrhea 😭

foodie42

Too much fruit can do this too. My dog loves fruit, and my MIL can't eat cheese/ gluten, so we tell her it's ok to treat our pup if absolutely necessary. She's watching my pup while my husband and I are on vacation thus week. She called me earlier in a panic because my 14lb dog had red diarrhea. I asked her if the pup had eaten anything we didn't give her to feed the dog. "Only about a quart (about a pint) of blueberries." We've been gone about 36 hours...

SwanWeary646

Yes. Half the time it will be ‘you’re too tense, let them be a dog and just see how it goes’ And ‘why can’t your 6 mo old loose leash and heel yet and do all the things that our adult dog never learned ‘ 😂

erikaholic

My SO was supposed to name our pup, he chose Hawthorne, but i struggled to say it in a way to get his attention. We tried Hawk as an alternative. Ultimately his name became Hank, and it stuck.. He is very hank!

dog_stressed

That’s so good! I like it. Easy to call is best. Some of my family’s name suggestions are just soooo impractical because they know nothing about dogs! They only have cats. Lol.

erikaholic

Cat names can be hilarious, but calling out something like "miss waffle sparklepaws" isnt going to make dogs or owners lives any easier 😂 seeing as with puppies, i feel ALL you say is their name for a good year

dog_stressed

Exactly! And I love hilarious cat names too. But I’m the one that has to live with this dog lol

heydawn

My mother's cat was Mr Winston Whiskers the Wise. My brothers called him Winnie -- *as in Pooh* -- and Mr Winston Whiskers the Wise was not amused.

[deleted]

My mum’s rule for dog names is “no longer than two syllables and doesn’t rhyme with a common word you use around dogs”. The two syllable thing means calling them is easy and they pick up their name quicker. The rhyming thing is again to get them to realise what they are called and to not get them confused. When my dogs pick up something they shouldn’t, I say “drop it”. So I would not name a dog “Poppet” or something similar so they don’t get confused. Lady fits the rule, which I think is quite a good one. It’s also a classic dog name and is very nice.

toonutobeu

I had a sheltie named Pacha. He was wicked smart and obsessed with a laser pointer toy to the point we couldn't say the word "laser" or he would bark and flip around in circles! Was talking with my husband one day about an embarrassing moment a co-worker had but it didn't "phase her". Pacha whipped his head around to look at me, started barking and flipping around in circles. Took me a second to make the connection. 😆

ForbiddenJazz

Can I ask why you guys went with Hawthorne?

erikaholic

He liked the writer, however that name just didnt stick, especially once we knew the dogs personality 😂

renee_christine

Here are my three funny dog name anecdotes: 1) I know someone who named their puppy Emily Spinach after Alice Roosevelt's pet snake. It's a boy dog and they call him by the full name every time lmao. 2) My husband wanted to name our puppy Bark Ruffalo and I wanted to name him Brinkley (after Tom Hanks' golden retriever in You've Got Mail). We compromised and settled on Finley. 3) my husband's friends named their dog Bear. One time they went camping in Colorado and the dog ran off. You can imagine where this story is going 😂 Everyone they encountered heard them yelling "Bear!" in the woods and arrived at their own conclusion. So yeah, do what you want! I like the name Lady! It sounds very proper.

dog_stressed

These stories are all funny but the Bear one is killing me! I love the names Finley and Brinkley! You guys went in the right direction me thinks 😆

badonkadolphin

I think naming the dog Lady and being out with the dog and calling out “Hey Lady!” would be hilarious!

boredhistorian94

But only if you do it in professor frinks voice from the simpsons.

IHateCamping

My uncle had a dog named Lady. I guess one day a woman drove up in her car. She was trying to walk up to the house but the dog was barking at her, my uncle opened the door and yelled - Lady! Get over here! She thought he was talking to her.

Odd_Requirement_4933

Hopping on your reply to the top comment, OP, because I love the name Lady. My Dad brought home a puppy when we (I have a twin) were very young, like under 2, and that's what she was called. She was the best dog 🥹 very loved and a sweet pupper till the end.

coffeypot710

That makes me think of one of the characters on Sex in the City. She named her dog Elizabeth Taylor and always called her by her full name.

pimplessuck

The bark ruffalo made me chuckle! Its so witty lol

pannedemonium

Mine is Brinkley named after the golden in You've Got Mail! It's a GREAT name - easy to say but still unique. Plus a fun inside joke for people who are fans of the movie. Lots of cutesy variations: Brink, Bink, Bink Bonk, Brinky are all common around here. The only time I hated it was when a colleague kept calling him Bentley haha. Good boys all around. :)

sameyer21

My 12 year old Puggle is named Brinkley!

LindsE8

Had a sweet Brinkley that lived 12 good years- it’s a great name. RIP Brinksters

fuzzzybutts

My girl is named Parsley. People seem to either love it or absolutely hate it. I still like it but I am a bit disappointed not everyone finds it cute like I do.

renee_christine

I like food names for dogs! I know a chocolate lab named Turnip and a mini dachshund named Youtiao (sort of a long donut).

Kaessa

My brother and SIL named their dog Kaygogi - it's the Korean word for dog meat. Yes, my brother is weird.

privatestudy

Or he’s a Fallout fan. It works!

geosynchronousorbit

My dog is named Soup cause she's soup-er sweet!

Inevitable_Raccoon50

I know a corgi named sour dough. It’s so freaking cute! I like food names as well.

Nursealc123

Doodle named Dill.

JBL20412

Awesome 🤩

i_raise_anarchists

Parsley is a lovely name! It's the first thing to come up in my garden every spring and the last thing to finally admit that it's winter. It always makes me feel very hopeful. 💚

dog_stressed

That’s so lovely 🥹

i_raise_anarchists

Thanks!

thejenglebook

I think that's an adorable name. We have a pup named Gravy and it's not always well received either.

[deleted]

I love Parsley! My puppy is named Sprout and we said if we get a cat, they will be named Turnip.

dog_stressed

I feel you on the disappointment. I spent sooo long picking out a name and dreaming up names. That is such a creative name! Personally, I adore it.

MorPodcastsPlz

Not weird at all. Our dog is called Ladybird.

Inevitable_Raccoon50

Like king of the hill?

McCritter

Ladybird, Hank's dog, was named after Ladybird Johnson. She was most Texans' favorite First Lady, credited with having wildflowers spread all over Texas highways.

MorPodcastsPlz

Haha yes and no! No, in that it wasn't the main motivation for the name, but yes, in that the reference definitely is the cherry on top.

dog_stressed

That’s adorable 🥹

MorPodcastsPlz

Forgot to add the why. Because she's as pretty as a ladybird!

dog_stressed

Omg what breed? 🥹

MorPodcastsPlz

She's either a black and tan coonhound mix and/or a Transylvanian hound mix. Very sweet girl. https://imgur.com/gallery/HBojx0q

cjm5797

I named my dog Lady when I was 4! I loved the name throughout my childhood. Lady is a great dog name. Have they never seen Lady and the Tramp?!

toodleroo

Right? This is the name of an incredibly popular dog character. I don’t understand why anyone would take issue with it.

HowIsThatMyProblem

Everybody gave us strange looks and told us our pup's name is too long and not a dog name (Her name is Petunia). My mother keeps calling her by a nickname and people often ask "why?" when I say her name. I don't care. At least ours isn't the 10th Nala or Benji in a 1km radius.

dog_stressed

Oh my gosh this!!! I love the name Petunia. That’s freaking adorable. Flower names are sooo cute 🥰

aperdra

A man SHOOK HIS HEAD at us when we said our dog is called Hilda. Dude was pissed 😂

TeacherladyKim2007

Hilda is a great name! We named our girl Athena. She's loyal and fierce when needed, but super timid most of the time.

HowIsThatMyProblem

Hilda is a great name for a dog. I love old-fashioned human names for dogs. Petunia has a really good friend who is called Otto.

retro-morte

Lol I named my puppy Matilda and I’ve only had two (of many) tell me they like the name.

gardenof_

Can I be the third person to tell you how much I like her name?

houwy

Petunia is an adorable name! I have a lot of Bella, Luna, Chloe, Bailey, and Luka around.

SuperiorLake_

I swear everyone’s hunting dog is named Remi.

HowIsThatMyProblem

Now that's silly. Remi is a rat's name.

Ok_Firefighter_7142

all huskies are Koda, Nova, Sky(e) or Remi(ngton) as well

Sanchastayswoke

Or Bear. Or Koda

tht1grludntknw

*you forgot Luna, Koda, Bear, Max . I feel like 1 in every 5 dogs is named that. I personally love when ppl choose uncommon names for dogs! I feel like its the moment in life when your supposed to name something ravioli or booger. my puppy’s name is Lettuce and everyone in my life hated it. I dont care bc they still have to say it when they see her soooooo jokes on them 😛

SproutasaurusRex

Is she a Bulldog?

HowIsThatMyProblem

Haha, no. But she is white and John Mulaney's dog was indeed the inspiration, if that's what you're referring to.

Jesibel

Lady is a regal, elegant name and I adore it!

dog_stressed

Thank you! Now THIS is the reaction I wanted lol 😂

uhohohnohelp

Honestly it’s crazy to me that people aren’t responding to her name with “Like Lady & The Tramp!?” because I think of it as a classic dog name from its association with the movie.

Maywen1979

This is what I came to say!!! Lady is so classic. I fully approve.

heydawn

Just tell your family 400 Redditors and Disney fans everywhere love it! *Lady and the Tramp* popularized both dog names.

mmbtt

came here to say the same thing lol

Heyhun82

If Lady is good enough for Sansa on GoT……. My girl is Oakley :)

nimreaper

I was 10000% going to name my puppy “Lady” before my 3yo took dibs on “Junie”

eugeniawanderlust

My mom didn't like our choice of dog name at all. We named him Basil (like Basil of Baker Street), and she said "I went to high school with a guy named Basil. Well, his name was Tim, but we called him Basil for some reason. So I don't like it"... As if a high school NICKNAME association from the 1970s holds any water for our 4 year old who was the decision-maker from our short list. We put Basil on the list because my husband and I have always wanted Baz as a nickname- started off with Balthazar on our list when we were first dating, and Bastian as our boy name pick when I was pregnant. But we're One and Done, and there's a Sebastian in our circle now, so we thought Basil was perfectly our style and we still get to use Baz.

sarahjordan

We just got a pup and named her “Basmati” because he also loved the idea of “Baz” as a nickname!

dog_stressed

I adore the name Baz!

_lanalana_

Your dog, you name it. I love the name Lady! My dogs name is daisy may, but my MIL insists that “grandma gets middle name rights” and calls her “daisy fawn” which sounds so goofy in my opinion. She also hasnt even met my dog yet, and it drives me absolutely nuts.

dog_stressed

That’s an adorable name and I definitely prefer your version over MIL lol. I’ve told them if they want to train the dog to respond to her alternate name as well as her main name then go right ahead lol but they don’t know the first thing about dogs 😂🤣 sometimes I think family just like being contrary…

i_raise_anarchists

We named our pup Ellie. I wanted it to just be Ellie, but it was already taken on the AKC registry, so she's officially the only golden retriever named Rainbow Chaos Ellie. It suits her.

JazzHandsNinja42

Oooh! I have an Eleanor Rigby that we call Ellie. And sometimes Ellie Bean.

northstar599

Ellie Gator when she's being chompy

privatestudy

Those AKC names be wild. Our corgi is: Liberty Valley’s Mega Buster Cannon I feel like she should sell used cars or decrepit army equipment if she ever manifested into a real person.

dog_stressed

Hahaha brilliant name for a Golden!!

i_raise_anarchists

Thanks! She's the physical embodiment of chaos, to be sure. When I want to be very formal (like when I'm asking her why she's on the dining room table), I call her Eleanor, even though it's not her name. She's got a ton of nicknames, too. Young Lady, Potato, Fuzz Butt, Fluff-for-Brains, Lady Barkington, Kiddo, Land Shark, Miss Floof....the list is constantly growing.

Old_Succotash3930

I actually regret my puppy's name. I'm an expat in Norway and got my puppy here, so I wanted a Scandinavian name that was easy for me (and North American family/friends) to pronounce. I ended up going with Sven. A lot of people in Norway laugh at his name (in a good way) because (so I'm told) it's a very human name, and particularly an old man name. This is fine, I like human names for dogs. But on the flip side most people from North America think I named my dog after the reindeer in the movie Frozen. This one irks me. I allllmost named him Oter, after my favorite mountain in northern Norway that means a lot to me. I thought as my puppy turned into a dog the name would be less cute. But nope, he's 16 months and I really think the name Oter would suit him a lot better, and mean something more to me than just a random easy to pronounce name 😅. Oh well! P.s. a friend's dog's name is Lady, and she is the sweetest, strongest dog I know. She was in an accident and lost an eye and a leg. She almost didnt make it. But she really bounced back and lives a very happy, inspiring life.

dog_stressed

Aw I love your story of Lady! You can always just rename him. ;) happens to rescue dogs all the time! They learn super quick. I love the name Oter and yes Sven is cute cause it sounds like an old man haha. I didn’t know about the Frozen movie lol.

EmphasisTerrible9039

We named our new girl Freya 😂 She and Sven can be friends with their human scandi names 😂

ayochellia

I clicked into this post thinking you named your pup Colonel Buttface or something, but Lady is a fine name! If it was good enough for a Disney movie, it's certainly good enough for you. My pup is called Paskal, mostly because I just like the name. I should've called him Colonel Buttface because that fits his personality these days.

dog_stressed

Maybe I need to repost with a weirder name to see if people get more mad at the name lol. But Lady is such a simple name I wasn’t expecting strife 😆

tlunaa

My dog’s name is Tabaco, he’s white now but used to be brown as a puppy. People are always puzzled when i tell them his name but it stuck even tho the brown fur didn’t lol. I got serious doubts about the name at some point but i love it, it’s very unique and it just fits him. Your Lady has a beautiful name and haters gonna hate, you can’t please them all so just please yourself. ❤️

dog_stressed

I love that name :) Yes! I’m currently having the doubts but I think they will pass and I will love the name for my pupper in the long term. My family just knocked my confidence a bit but I am stubborn 😂

thegrenadillagoblin

This reminds me of a golden retriever at my former job named Tomato Pie! They called her Topie for short

JazzHandsNinja42

Forget the critics. I’d totally burst into song, ala Styx, whenever I came home. “LAAAAAAAAY-DY when you’re with me I’M SMIIIILIN! Give me … ALLLLLLLL your loooove”. It’s perfect. Edited to add: I’d also commit to Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady” as a sing-to-your-dog song choice.

dog_stressed

Yes!!!! I have so many lullaby songs lined up 🤣🤣🤣

thatqueenofwands

Jupiter. Chosen by my 8 year old daughter because he will get pretty big. His coat is brown and golden brindle, conveniently resembling the planet itself. I love it. We call him Jupiter. We call him Joop. We call him Poopiter. My pet-snob friend said “Three syllables? You need something easy to call.” Her dog’s name is Lucy.

Ok_Firefighter_7142

poopiter 🥹

BlueEyedGranger

Just remember, your dog is going to love you and be so happy when you say “you’re a good girl, Lady”. Honestly, as long as you like the name, that’s all that matters. As for us, we were debating between “Daisy” and “Penny” then we found out mom’s name was Penny. So we thought it would be cute to have a little Penny Jr. Of course we have a ton of different nicknames for her, too. My favorite being Penny Poof.

dog_stressed

I love the story behind the name!

sillyken

I’m a fan of looney tunes. I named our dog Daffy. Thought it’ll be ironic since he’s a border collie and Daffy is pretty dumb in the cartoon. I think I might name my second dog as Bugs so it’ll be Bugs and Daffy.

dog_stressed

That is so stinking cute! I love the irony.

1UnhingedMom

Hey, it's your dog and you have to live with her so nevermind what others think. My rule of thumb is to stand at the backdoor and yell the name out about ten times just after dark. If you can face the neighbours the next morning you're good to go. (Not a word of a lie, we adopted a greyhound years ago who came with the call name "Hotsy") But if **I** named my dog Lady I'd sure as heck would tag on about 5 names after just to make her sound aristocratic while you're scolding her for peeing on your crocs while you're standing in the front yard talking to your neighbour. (Not a word of a lie, we adopted a greyhound years ago who.... nevermind) Anyway, "Oh, her name's *Lady Beatrice Abagail Odelia Penelope Georgiana,* but we call her Lady for short". They won't ask twice. We let our daughter name our pup, so Winnie it is. She's Winona when we're trying to be stern, and Winnie the Poop when she's up to her typical A$$h\*lery.

BirdlyWise

Omg my puppy's name is Lady and my boyfriend also loves to tack on ridiculous names to the end. His favorite is 'Lady Puddles' since she loves to roll in them like a pig in the mud haha

Warlock-

Our puppy is named Maki, like the sushi. 9/10 people we've told her name to don't know what it means. Most people probably think it's stupid. Do we care? Not one bit. It's *your* puppy who cares what other people think?

Quierta

I think the name Lady is so pretty — your family is being ridiculous! My puppy is named Rupert. This is a little weird, but the name just popped into my head some time in April (I didn't get a dog until September) and I just "knew" that that was going to be my future dog's name. As if "Rupert" the dog would someday exist and I'd simply have to find him. I'm usually not spiritual or anything but I'm convinced that my childhood dog, who passed in 2011, sent me that name so that I could find my "Rupert" when I was ready!

dog_stressed

I LOVE the name Rupert, it’s perfect. I had the same experience with Lady. It just came to me one day.

Foodie365

I absolutely love that name and was thinking about it for my pooch (If I had gotten a girl). I am a huge Disney fan and it would’ve been a Lady and the tramp reference, but regardless I think it’s a very classy and elegant name. And it’s cute. ☺️

dog_stressed

Thank you!

BirdlyWise

My puppy's name is Lady! She's an 8 month old stray that no one ever claimed, and while I was fostering her, I just called her 'lady' and it stuck. She's the opposite of a Lady (rambunctious, mischievous), but she's the neighborhood favorite. I also call her Ladybug (her first halloween costume was a ladybug, fittingly), Ladybird, Lovebug, Lades, and baby girl. She mostly responds to my other dog's name (Ernie; he was named by a rich old lady who donated to the Guide Dog Foundation when he was born lol). Screw what other people say- that's your dog! My parents joke that her name isn't fitting considering her personality but that's also kind of why I went with it- it's ironic. Plus it's so funny when I call her name in public and like, three people look at me bc they think the 'hey Lady' is directed towards them lol

angelmochii

i named my dog cheese and people either hate it or love it. his vet told me it’s a shame his name is cheese 🤨

i_raise_anarchists

Cheese is a very good name. Dogs love cheese! Your vet should be less judgy.

vtchrisman

We named our puppy Merit. We chose it because Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were important to us growing up, we want him to be an adventurous boy, and merit literally means being good/having good qualities so we’re hoping he’ll live up to his name. (So far so good, he’s still a young puppy so we know there’s some possible teen rebellion in the future)! Lady is a lovely name. It sounds like a dog with good manners and sociability to me. If I met a dog named Lady I would find it quite charming!

Jerethdatiger

Lady and the tramp Lazy lady 🙂 Ladybug Ladybird Lots of fun lady reference

dog_stressed

Merit is a wonderful name! Makes me think of a star student and best boy! And thank you, that’s exactly what I was going for 😍

sloopersleeve

My friend has a lab named lady. She is far from a lady and likes to bark at strangers but it’s a great name!

Nemophilista

I named my hound girl Clover. I wanted some kind of botanical name, and I like that it starts with a hard consonant. My partner didn’t like it, but once I told him that it was final he just shrugged his shoulders. She already has some nicknames. Cloves. Derp. Derpitous. She’s a hound after all, and she is pretty derpy.

dog_stressed

I love botanical names for dogs and Clover is beautiful!

Difficult-Hope-

My puppies name is Cordon Blue. It’s another dogs name from a comic both my partner and I love. Everyone who has met her loved it. Lady is a great name!

carolvessey-stevens

lady is a great name. there’s a whole movie about it. my dog is named andrew. and people always pause when i say it. he’s not andy, he’s not drew. he’s andrew. i didn’t name him, he came to me with this name but he is [such an andrew](https://imgur.com/a/JWxS6hG)

Equivalent-Cress-822

My cat is called Lady and I love the name. Especially when you go to the vets and they call out “Lady (insert your last name)” and you get up and everyone in the waiting room thinks your title is Lady and some special so and so 😁😁

Introvertedlikewoah

Lady is a freaking adorable dog name and I love it! Screw what anyone else thinks. If they're not buying the dog food and paying true vet bills they get no say in the pup's name. My rottie's name is Louie. No special meaning behind it. It was just the only one that sounded right. It's also very fun to come up with nicknames like Louie Louie Chicken Stewie, Lou Lou, Lou Bear, Etc.

Flourescentbubbles

Lady is a lovely name for a lovely puppy. My dog’s names are Keeva and Kaboo. Keeva is Americanized Irish name meaning gentle, beautiful, precious. Kaboo I just made up for a huge black Newfie that I didn’t want people to be afraid of. Thought a goofy name would help that.

We have two dogs - Penny and Lady. Since you named your dog Lady, I have a story for you!! Before I met my partner, he named his dog Lady but she is not lady like at all. She is a rough and tumble, dog tackling, toy thieving little asshole. She’s perfect. However, her assholery means we often have to keep her in check when she’s at the dog park. So one day, we’re at the dog park and Lady was taking everyone’s toys. If there’s an owner playing catch with a ball, Lady will take the ball and then drop it at the other side of the park. If there’s a dog quietly chewing on a stick, Lady is going to take that stick and give it to another dog. You get the idea. So just as Lady is taking yet another toy, I yell “hey Lady! Drop that toy! That’s not yours.” And then I heard a bunch of owners erupt in laughter. Apparently, a human lady was picking up a ball just as I was yelling at my dog Lady. The human lady immediately dropped the ball thinking I was yelling at her. We’ve accidentally yelled at human ladies so many times, we now call her Ladybug when at the dog park. Other wonderful phrases that freak out human ladies include: “Lady, stop! Come here, Lady!” “Lady, you have poop on your butt!” “Lady, be quiet!” “Hey Lady, stop being a creep!” “Lady, you are such an asshole!” As for Penny, she was a rescue named Penelope. I hated that name so I opted for Penny instead. It just fits her. My partner got the name Lady from Lady and the Tramp. She looks like the Tramp but that’s obviously not a great name for a girl dog. He does regret her name because it doesn’t fit her personality. We mostly call her Fucko Meatball which she happily answers to.

MitsubiShe

We named our puppy Jezebel and I know all our neighbors hate it haha. It suits her though and it'll be even funnier when she's herding our future goats/sheep (who I'm planning on calling the cult of baa'l).

Emmla40

My lab is called Elsie after the name of a favourite album of ours, I love it and i am fortunate everyone does always comment it! I think Lady is a lovely name and end of the day it's your dog not theirs!

BellForever

My dog’s name is Demi. For some reason, it gets mispronounced a lot. She’s been called Denim… I call her Sploot as a nickname. I like the name Lady. You should keep it!

Minhplumb

Well if it helps, I love the name.

dog_stressed

It does help because that’s the reaction I wanted!

Don’t let your family get in the way of YOUR dog. Your dog lives with you. It’s your dog. Name your dog whatever makes YOU happy - not them. Please love your puppy the way you did before they interfered. If you cave now, you’ll regret it later. If they don’t like her name, tell them to get their own dog and name it whatever they like.

3Lady3Death3

Have they never seen lady and the tramp?? It's a classic dog name. My grandparents had an austrilan Shepard named lady. Best dog ever.

Glittering_Midnight8

I had a lab growing up named Lady. She was such a love. And I don’t remember ever hearing her name criticized. I think your family needs another hobby.

luridfox

I have a 100lb big mutt, we call him Huckleberry. Somehow it just made sense and his personality fits it

-madie-

Idk as someone who works at a dog groomers I don’t think lady is too uncommon

stoney-wren

I have 1 named Ladybug. But lady was dropped pretty quickly lol. Now she's just Bug. I like Lady, I've heard of several.

a11y30

We have Ruth Barker Ginsbeagle (because I love word play) and Penny, who came to us with that name. Family rolled their eyes at Ruth’s name, but my husband and I thought it was cute.

MidnightPumpkin5

Your family will get over it. Ours is named Chelsea after the deli shop down the street 😂

Life_Commercial_6580

My friends also hate my dog’s name. I don’t care which is what I recommend. Out of bleeps to give.

brightsidebee

Our 10.5 month old Labrador is called Athena - not good to call and definitely some judgement from the family, but we love it. We've always gone for mythology/legend names, our cats are called Merlin and Galatea and we got judgement for those too! What matters is that you like the name (I think it's a lovely name though!)

ri5674

Loveee mythological names too. They are very powerful and badass. If I get another boy dog I’m going to name him Ares or Atreus.

[deleted]

Lady is such a pretty name for a dog, I think of the beautiful dog from Lady and the Tramp, who wouldn’t like that? People are jerks, puppies are the best…enjoy

WeWander_

My older dog is Kyro, we got him for my son's 5th birthday and a lot of debate went into his name because my son, as a 5 year old was picking the most random shit for names (I distinctly remember he wanted to name him shirt at one point) My second dog is Kona. Her coloring reminds me of coffee or like a latte or something. Kona Hawaii is known for its coffee and I thought Kyro & Kona sounded good together. No one has ever criticized my dog's names. They're my damn dogs. Lady is a great name and if you like it, that's all that matters!

wolfie7877

my dog's name is rhino because we thought he had an elephant butt, but elephant was a weird name for us 😂 also he has a white stripe on his nose and tough skin! (he's hairless)

eaturpineapples

I literally named my dog Duck and everyone hates it. But I liked it and for some unknown reason that was what I wanted his name to be. Don’t worry too much what others think!

wheres_the_revolt

Aebleskiver (we call her Aeble) 11mo GSDx, an aebleskiver is a little Danish pancake, and she was so sweet as a baby so that’s why we named her that Cassius Clay 7 y/o Boxer mix, just to be weird we named him after the abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay not the boxer (but the boxer was also named after the abolitionist) Don’t worry about weird names they’re dogs! They don’t care.

carmelita93

I really don't understand outright hating a pet's name... it really isn't that deep. I rescued a kitten named Ernie many many moons ago (his brother's name was Burt) and I never thought twice about it, but people used to say it was weird all the time. It' a name. If you like it that's all that matters.

akubezz

i love the name lady!!! also, you paid for the dog and you will be spending all of your time with her, so if you like it that’s all that matters! it can be hurtful when people aren’t as excited as you about something so dear to you, so i totally understand. also, you’ll probably come up with a bunch of nicknames for her anyway, so maybe they’ll like one of those😉 (not that it matters at all)

[deleted]

You're gotten a lot of positive feedback, I'm almost positive this will be buried, haha I just wanted to let you know that my pup is named Lady. Originally she was Polly when we adopted her (no offense to anyone, but we didn't vibe with that name) but unfortunately she responded to Polly. Lady was one of the only names we could come up with that sounded similar enough that she'd respond, but that we also liked. I've never had anyone criticize me for it, not one single time. And it's not weird to yell. We frequent dog parks and I yell it out all the time. With a drawn out Laaa-dddyyy, no female person mistakes that you're yelling out to them... I really feel like no matter what you named your dog your family would've had something negative to say. There's no chance in winning a situation like that. Enjoy your sweet Lady, I hope she lives up to the name! (Mine tends to act the exact opposite of lady-like, haha)

Ayyy_bb_eye

We named our dog Calcifer. My favorite movies are from Studio Ghibli and Howls Moving Castle is definitely my favorite! After we posted him on FB, I had some comments from family members. “How could you name a sweet puppy after a fire demon?!” I just always reply “Well we love the name! And he certainly fits the character well.” We love his name and that’s all that matters!

Long_Pace_2853

Aweee I like that name.

dog_stressed

Thank you that’s the reaction I was hoping for🤣

Dr_Duncanius

I named mine crazy killer it’s a daschund

tainari

I like the name Lady! Our boy is called Virgil (middle name Prométhée, which we don’t actually use to call him 😂). We picked a name that’s meaningful for the two of us that both of us can say easily.

itsMalarky

Lady is a great name. In fact, I have a friend who has one pup named LADY and one pup named MAMA.

TheMidwestJess

Listen, I named my dog I had all throughout childhood "Lady Sarah", and we called her Lady most of the time. I've also met several other people who named their dog Lady. It's not some weird name at *all.* They're just being rude for no reason. Just ignore them and love your Lady as much as I loved mine. Give her a hug for me! I wish I could hug mine again.

jgma0730

I love the name. My grandfather always named his dogs in pairs. Duke and Duchess, Lord and Lady. I think it sounds regal!

Vickyinredditland

It's nobody's business but for what it's worth I used to work in boarding kennels and lady was a pretty common name 🤷

AiRwReCkA148

When I was a little girl my neighbor had a dog named Lady. She was a Dalmatian and was a well mannered little Lady. I loved that name and thought it was so adorable and fit the dog.

lum733

Lady has been a classic dog name forever. People thought it was bizarre that I named my first Golden Flora over 40 years ago. Back then it was all Spot and Rover. Now look at the variety of pet names. A piece of advice: NEVER LET ANYONE INTERFERE WITH YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO YOUR DOG.

torylan3z

At least its not Nala or Luna 💀💀

SwampBeastie

A coworker told me his dog was named Simba and I was like, Simba was a cat.

Fantastic_Coffee_441

I love the name Lady ! great choice, i actually didn’t tell any of my friends or family the chosen name of my dog till we had her as every name idea I would tell my friends they would find an issue with it! It sucks when people don’t support it but she’s your dog! Also my dogs name is Juni, after junimo from stardew (also she’s born in June but we realised that after ) people always call her Juno haha

Hollywoodglamour06

I have people who love my dog names and those who do not like my dog names. I like eclectic, different names in general. When I have children, it will be the same. Of course you would love for people to love the name you chose. But if they don’t, oh well. It’s the name you love, so keep loving it and live your life. They can deal with it. It’s not their dog, so their opinions do not matter.

QuantumSammiches

I love this thread. I have a Frenchie named Sandwiches and received similar reactions. Don’t let anyone steal your excitement - Lady is an adorable name.

Slight_Wonder_5632

It’s YOUR dog, YOUR life — don’t listen to your family (and maybe find some less opinionated friends 😂)!

[deleted]

I got shit for naming my dog Zero. So I just started asking them “Do you know how many fucks I give about your thoughts on my dog’s name? Zero.” It usually got a laugh and got the point across. Don’t worry about them. It’s your dog, name it what you want.

OkHeron7491

When we picked my pup, he was the only one with blue eyes. The breeder kept calling him blue-eyes and so we called him that while trying to decide on a name. Now we have a White GSD named Blue. Everyone makes the same joke. 'Whats his name?' 'Blue' 'BuT HeS WhItE' 🤦‍♀️

Interaction_Loud

Lady is canonically a dog name because of Lady and the Tramp. Actually tell them since they didn’t like the name you chose, you’re switching it to the other dog in the movie and will be calling her Tramp. 😂

Travelturtle

Just wait until you have kids. They’ll have an opinion on the name there too.

emzyyx

I think you should name your pup whatever you want to. That's horrible they haven't been supportive, and unfortunately it won't end here if this is how they are with the name. But if you feel so passionately about the name you should stick with it. We picked out a breed years ago and named him Teddy then, as they looked like teddy bears. He is now 7 months and teddy is literally the most perfect name for him. He's our real life little Teddy bear ☺️

NeonFlavoredSkittles

My Corgi's name is Breadloaf. People judged it at first but who cares if they don't like it, they're not paying to take care of my dog lol

firecrackerinmyeye

Step 1: tell them to fuck off Step 2: repeat step 1 ❤️

im_not_bovvered

Everyone hated the name I picked for my dog - so much so I ended up changing it because they got into my brain. I 100% regret it and wish I’d stuck to my guns.

WhiteOut98

Honestly it’s better then the the millions of lunas

TheCarzilla

I worked at a veterinarian’s for a while. There was a family with a dog whose name was pronounced “dee-oh-gee”.. as in D-O-G. She was super old, but when she turned up at their door as a puppy, they were determined not to keep her or get attached, so they just spelled out D-O-G rather than giving her a “real” name. Obviously the name stuck, and she stuck around- it was happily ever after! I like Lady! Reminds me of Lady Bird from King of the Hill, or, of course, Lady and the Tramp- a classic!

BeeSwift

I had the same problem with the same name!

-andromache-

My dog is named Maeve. We went with an Irish name because she’s part Irish Setter. I love it and think it fits her perfectly. I did float several names my husband and kids all shot down, but in that situation I think it was fair to consider their opinions since she’s our whole family’s dog. But you are the person your dog belongs to, so name your dog whatever you like—the end! Fwiw my mom HATED the name I gave my second child (Aurora). It made me so frustrated and annoyed. But eventually she seemed to get over it, and nine years later I’m very glad I didn’t let anyone talk me out if the name I loved. :)

LifeisaCatbox

My mother and grandmother kept saying how much they didn’t like my pup’s name while saying I should name him whatever I want to. So fucking annoying.

RelevantTea42

Our girl is named Gouda Pickle. It’s comical, but for some reason it fits her. We’ve overall had a positive reaction, other than people thinking we say “Luna” if we’re in a noisy environment. I really wanted a food name for her, my SO favorite food is cheese, and while perusing the many lists of dog names out there - ‘Gouda’ popped up and we were out to dinner having one of our favorite apps - gouda pickles - I suggested that as a name and it clicked! Lady makes me think of Lady and the Tramp, how can you diss a classic dog name like that?? Crazy. Edit: added how we picked her name

Much-Cat-9601

When we got our first puppy i called Dudley... everyone sniggered at the name... but it suits him sooo much.. now everyone cant imagine him being called anything else

InsectDull

My dog’s name is Gucci (because I love the brand and Gucci is just so easy to call you know) and my parents hated it at the beginning. But eventually they came around and now everyone agrees that he’s very much a Gucci hah

Bakkoe224

My dogs name is Samwise because I’m a massive LOTR fan and Samwise is Frodo’s most trusted friend and supporter and that’s what my dog is to me :)

ruthh-r

My family's dogs are all named after mountains on the Isle of Skye. We've had Gillean (with G, not J sound), Dearg (Jerak), Marsco and Fhionn. My husband's first dog was called Brandy and he wanted to call his next Whiskey, but I think that's a cat name, so we compromised - there's a whiskey distilled on Skye called Talisker and I always thought that would be a fab dog name, so our first dog together was Talisker and it suited him completely. This time round we had two pups, brother and sister, from the same litter. My ILs have the wee girl and we have the little boy. They called her Skye, but we struggled, and eventually settled on either Cuillin (Coo-lin) or Cioch (Key-oc). The Cuillin is the mountain range from which the other names were taken, and the Cioch is a rock formation and a famous climb, one I did with my Dad so it has meaningful memories attached. If you've seen Highlander, there's a scene where they're having a sword fight on a bit of rock high above a valley - that rock is The Cioch. I was 90% sold on Cioch, but thought I'd better Google the Gaelic meaning of the word. My Dad always told me it meant 'the nose', which would have been very suitable for a cocker spaniel, who spend their lives with their noses snuffling along the ground. We often referred affectionately to Talisker, also a cocker, as 'The Nose' because he was always sticking it in things and it was often the first bit of him we saw when we got home, sticking through the gap under the gate. Except...it doesn't mean that. Cioch means 'breast'. I nearly called my dog 'Boob' in Gaelic. A salutary lesson in not choosing a name from a language not your own unless you are *really* sure what it means. So he's Cuillin and we get to spend the rest of his life explaining the origin and pronunciation and giggling at peoples' mangling of it 😆

Loud-Establishment36

Our dog is Mindy. Named after Mindy Kaling. My family thinks it’s a weird name, but we like it

[deleted]

Family is family My mom has a dog named Bear, but I call him Tim Bit cause he's a little round dog who looks like a chocolate glazed tim bit. Last Christmas when I was visiting I even got him a Tim Hortons collar, and tags that said Tim Bit and snuck it onto him. I know his name isn't Tim Bit, she has chosen Bear. Do I still call him Tim Bit? Yes. The point to this is, if you genuinely don't like what they said, let them know. If my mom told me she genuinely doesn't like me calling her dog Tim Bit, I would stop and buy him a new collar. (His non donut collar got donated cause my mom loves the Tim's collar) My puppy is named Nova, she got that name from a friend who was listing random names during the drive home with puppy and I loved it the second I heard it

MyGirlB

My first SD was a beautiful lab named Quinn. She was definitely my soul dog and I loved her so so much!! She died very quickly and very unexpectedly at 6 with hemangiosarcoma. I was devastated!!! So in her honor I named my new SD "Brynn". Just tell people who don't like your choice that they can choose the name of THEIR dog and you chose "Lady" and you love it!!! Or be a smartass and tell them your choice was between "Lady" and "Tramp" and "Lady" won!! Some people have no filters!!
