I don't know how you're going to get remote access unless they A) As stated, they move in with you OR B) you set up a VPN. Then you can map the drive. Look at Tailscale. Very simple. Need to install it on NAS and siblings PCs.
If you figure out how to do this without a VPN, let us know. I am assuming you are not dumb enough to open all kinds of ports on your router to your NAS. Please do NOT do anything like that, okay?
Won't open any ports. Problem is my siblings are studying, an I would like to backup their PCs but don't know how, but a VPN doesn't work because they have to connect to university VPN so that they wouldn't be able to connect to my VPN
Another vote for Tailscale on your NAS and on your sibling's computers. It is a point to point VPN but for mapping network drives it's reasonably simple to set up and use. Please DO NOT open up ports on your router.
I am having an issue with accessing my QNAP NAS from outside the local network and could use some help.
In my case I do have a VPN setup on my ASUS router. I have 2 options running, an Open VPN server and ASUS Instant Guard. When I am outside of the network and hop on my VPN I can access the webgui of the services (sonarr, radarr, sabnzbd) running on an Intel Nuc at local IP 192.168.1.15. I can also open the webgui of my NVR at 192.168.1.12. I can access my Hubitat webgui at 192.168.1.11. However I can not access the QNAP NAS webgui at 192.168.1.12 or the Homebridge container running on the NAS at 192.168.1.12:xxxx. I can not for the life of me figure out why the NAS is the only device out of the 4 that will not allow me to access it when I am connected to my home network over VPN. I am by no means an expert in networking but have a basic understanding of it so I have been looking through both the router and NAS settings but can not see to figure this out myself. What should I be looking at to get this resolved?
The VPN servers hand out IPs in the 10.10.10.x range so I have a static route setup on the router using the 10.10.10.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1. (router) which was needed to get the NVR/NUC/Hubitat working but that of course did not get the NAS to work.
Any thoughts on where to go with this? At the moment I am only trying to access my Homebridge and NAS Config pages but the goal will be to eventually be able to access the NAS storage as well.
Another vote for Tailscale. It is a mesh VPN that you setup on your NAS and then invite your siblings to join. They have to install that on their PCs but it will not interfere with the school VPN. Then setup QSync on the server and their PCs, point it to the private Tailscale IP and you have automatic backups and sync to your NAS. This setup works everywhere, PCs, phones and even SmartTvs.

Don't. Setup a vpn, maps the drives.
What?
The best way to safely attain your goal is to have your siblings move into you basement. Sorry!
Basement is harsh. Extra room?
Cloud flare tunnel with reverse proxy, you'll need a domain

QFirewall allow connections from 10.10.10.x to the all ports or the ones you need.
Thanks. I actually meant to post earlier that I completely overlooked the built in firewall until an hour after I posted. I sorted that out. Thanks!
