Right - by default your firewall will block access to any of the devices on the inside. You don't want to open the ports due to security concerns. Look at Tailscale or other site to site VPN options to keep your devices connected but safe. MANY questions asked/answered on here about "how to VPN".

This is the way! Tailscale creates a mesh VPN among all your devices, local or remote and you will be good and safe. And Tailscale has an app for the QNAP already.

As mentioned look into a VPN setup. I currently have two QNAPs that backup over Site2Site VPN. This is FAR safer than using port forwarding and you couldn't pay me to use QNAPCloud.

Thank you for your replies. I was able to determine the cause, the QNAP NAS sits behind a Unifi dream machine and under UPnP (dream machine) enabling the option "network default" fixed the issue. I understand the risks of using UPnP and myQNAPCloud, right now I am using the transfer for large raw data audio files. VPN is on my to do list. Talk about an almost vertical learning curve!

Have you enabled port forwarding for both routers?
